I wanted to have the new style air filter systems installed. New Balance came over and inspected both of out AC units. They then sent me a quote via email several days later. I then scheduled the work them. They called the day before the appointment to confirm, They showed up on time They were very careful not to damage or dirty any un-related parts of the house. The technicians were very professional and friendly. They were in and out in about 1/2 day. I have been very happy with their work and would highly recommend them in future.

After moving to a 3-story townhouse a few months ago, it was obvious that the thermostats on each floor weren't controlling air flow or temperatures. If it was comfortable on the ground floor, the middle floor was a bit warm and the top floor was uncomfortably hot. The HVAC company I was using misdiagnosed the problem and couldn't offer a solution. When I saw the grades New Balance earned on Angie's List and read that they have expertise in zoned systems with dampers and programmable thermostats, I called for an appointment. The owner came out on a Saturday afternoon to diagnose the problems and prepare a proposal. I received and signed the proposal on Monday, and the repairs were done on Tuesday. I normally get competitive bids, but I was convinced from my interaction with the owner that I was in good hands. I've used both cooling and heating these past few days, and the programmable thermostats and dampers operate as they should. The before and after are like night and day. The technicians were courteous and knowledgeable, and I appreciated that they wore booties over their shoes to avoid tracking dirt into the house.
Description of Work: Replaced board that controls dampers and a section of duct with damper; installed three new programmable thermostats.

New Balance is a very good company. They have a maintenance contract that give you two services-spring and fall for A/C and heating that covers everything under the sun. These guys really know their stuff. They are able to provide guidance on what is needed for my specific units. They even came out on a Saturday after I called them as my A/C unit had crashed (manufacturer defect). They answer all my questions and provide great service. I would highly recommend them.

My parents have known the owner (Sam) and have been using New Balance for over 20 years when they were given his name for his A/C company by a family friend. Sam and New Balance have always been great with my parents and offered great systems and service. When I purchased a home back in June 2014, I knew that most likely I would need the A/C (16 years old) and heater (original to the house, 36+ years old) replaced. I contacted New Balance to come out and give me a quote. New Balance sent Shaq out to look at my house to determine my needs. Shaq was wonderful: very professional, showed up on time, and was able to quickly assess what would be best for the house. He recommended both my A/C and heater be replaced. He also strongly recommended that I replace all the duct work. He was very upfront with me that the duct work was not in good shape, and it wouldn't be worth it to replace the systems but leave the duct work as it is. I appreciated the feedback and agreed it would have to be replaced. Shaq also listened to my concerns that I would want the house zoned (first floor and second floor zones). I got the quote later that day from Shaq. We scheduled the service not long after that. Shaq came out another time after that to look at the duct work in an area of the attic that had been previously inaccessible. Shaq provided an updated quote for additional duct work that was needed. The crew came out and worked diligently each day. It took a little bit longer (maybe one day) than I was told, which wasn't great but wasn't a big deal since I hadn't moved into the house yet. All in all, the service was really good and what I expected after my parents' long experience with New Balance. One of the things I appreciated was that I was given three different A/C systems to choose from. While the I was given an option for a more expensive option, Shaq was not pressuring me to purchase that system - he told me what the best option would be for my house, which was the mid-range option. One of the best things I've loved is the energy efficiency. My home is a 37 year old home, yet my electricity bills for my almost 2,800 square foot house are virtually the same as my previous 1,100 square foot apartment. I'm still in shock that my electricity is not more. It speaks to the quality of the product, duct work, and insulation I received from New Balance. I will continue to use New Balance for my A/C needs.
Description of Work: Installed new A/C, heater, and replaced all the duct work in the house. The house was also zoned so that the first floor and second floor could be set to different temperatures.

When I needed to replace my system in May of 2011, New Balance came highly recommended by a neighbor who mentioned that they were expensive but very good. They also advertised in the Gay and Lesbian Yellow Pages so I contacted them along with a few other companies to get an estimate. Their estimate came in lower than all of the others so based on that and the recommendation from my neighbor I had them install the new system. Everything went well, or so I thought, even though the condenser had to be lifted up to the roof of my two story condo building and it was a little rough when getting the unit over the top of the ladder they pulled it up along. The system worked fine after installation so I thought that bit of roughness didn't affect it at all. The new system came with a fall and spring maintenance service which they performed. The fall service seemed pretty thorough but I was not too impressed with what they did during the Spring service. Since it was included, I didn't say anything and again the system was working fine. They were always punctual until that point. I was about to call them for the AC maintenance for this year when I noticed the AC was not cooling and was running continually. I called them to schedule the maintenance but the service call was scheduled separately. They owner, Sam, was able to get me scheduled that same day in he afternoon so I left my key with one of my neighbors as I had to go to work. They were supposed to arrive between 12 and 2 P.M. At 4 I checked with my neighbor who said he had not heard from them. I called and was advised that the first stop of the morning took 2 hours because of a leak and that backed everything up, again no one called to advise they were running very late. The technician arrived around 5:30 I believe. When I got home that night the AC was cooling but still ran continuously and within an hour or two it was no longer cooling at all. I called the following Monday, while I was out of town and scheduled for them to come out the next day. They arrived within the time from provided and told me that the technician had added refrigerant and it was completely out again so their was a leak somewhere. They found the leak, a hole which was caused by heat generated by two wires which had come loose. I was advised it would cost about $450 to fix it. I had a $15 off coupon and in the end it was &400 even for the whole thing. The condenser is under a 10 year parts warranty but the labor was only for one year, which I knew. I asked if it might have been a problem caused during installation but was advised that it was wires inside the condenser itself. Sam was here as well and mentioned that it is rare to see something like this with Trane systems. Now I wonder if this might have been caused by jarring when they had difficulty getting the unit over the top of the ladder. My grade on quality is for two reasons. 1) I was not impressed with the Spring maintenance and 2) the technician who came the first time should have figured out that there was a leak as it is not normal for a system to be completely drained of refrigerant in 2 years. The leak should have been found and fixed on the first call. Because it was not, I had to board my cat when I went out of town that weekend because I didn't want to leave her in a hot apartment. Fortunately I had already planned on being out of town so I wasn't there the weekend without AC. I also would add my concern now about the difficulty getting the the unit over the ladder and the possibility that this might have loosened those wires.
Description of Work: Replaced my AC system in May of 2011. Performed fall and spring maintenance on system. This last call was too fix the AC because it was not cooling.

My old units were undersized and were going out. I knew this before contacting New Balance. I had had bad experiences in the past with service providers for my old systems. Due to the size and layout of my home, I had considered two units or a zoned unit. I did my research through Angies List and the BBB and came up with New Balance which was located fairly near my house. They came out, explained my options to me, explained why they felt a properly sized single unit installed the way the did would work for me. I was impressed with their punctuality, their honesty in not leading me to the more expensive options, and the quality of their work. All seems to be working great now. I will try to update this review in a couple of years as the units get older and I have more experience with New Balance AC's maintenance program.

I've used New Balance A/C Inc. for 20 or 25 years. They're excellent. They're punctual and extremely honest. They're very trustworthy. They always, always answer my calls and they always do everything to accommodate me. They bend over backwards for their customers. He was going on vacation one year, but my a/c broke and it was very hot. I would have to go without air conditioning for three days if he left for vacation. So he came out and fixed it and went on his way.

Overall, this was a great experience.
Description of Work: My air conditioner was blowing warm air. New Balance repairman came out, acccess the problem and informed me of my options. He was very polite and knowledge about air conditioners and heaters. I asked he to replaced the capacitor on my air unit, in which he did an excellent job. The cost was a little over $200. On September 14, I signed up for New Balance service plan and was given 2 lbs of freon after the repairman did another accessment. The service agreement is very reasonable ($159.00) and you get a lot of bang for your buck. I would highly recommend New Balance A / C to anyone who wants a honest, reliable and efficient company.

The cost was much more than they quoted me on the phone. They said it was because the system required more freon, which could be true. When the technician came out we also notice that there was water dripping into the secondary drip pan. He said that would require another trip to come out and clean the drain lines. Another trip = another trip charge. The technician is also a salesman saying that if I am going to pay for another trip anyway, I might as well buy their annual service plan. Not sure if all this is normal, but I wish they could have fixed everything on the same trip. I'm going to try somebody else next time.

We appreciate the feedback, and after talking with the technician and office manager, a slightly different picture is painted of the service call. The call complaint was the unit running continually and not cooling below 75 degrees. The quoted price was a $79 diagnostic charge (includes trip charge) plus whatever repair is needed minus the 5% Angie’s List discount. What the service technician diagnosed as the cause of the problem was an evaporator coil that was frozen over due to the system being low on refrigerant. The unit was turned off to thaw. Because thawing a unit takes several hours, the technician left and returned several hours later (no extra charge). As expected, the secondary drain pan was full of water and still dripping; not due to any clogged drain lines but to the low Freon causing the initial freeze and thawing. At that time, 2lbs of Freon was added and the problem for which the call was made was fixed. At this time, it was also recommended to the customer that a Safety and Efficiency check should be performed to help the unit run to the best of its ability, which would include flushing drain lines. Safety and Efficiency checks are a separate service, department and charge which are usually scheduled several days in advance. In conclusion, the total cost for the diagnostic, repair and Freon charge minus the Angie’s List discount was less than $200….a reasonable charge in the industry for this service. A Safety and Efficiency check was scheduled by the member who later called to cancel the appointment. There is no additional trip charge for this flat-rate maintenance service. Regrettably, there seems to have been a communication break-down.

I called New Balance after buying my first home and they set up an appointment that fit my schedule. They showed up right on time and took a look at what I wanted. At first I told them that I only wanted to replace the outside unit... however they advised me that because the coolant type was no longer made it would be smarter in the long run to replace the entire system. I was given 6 different options of A/C systems which were all described in person and was not pressed one way or another. I didn't feel like the rep was a salesperson at all. When installed New Balance brought about 5 workers to my house and each of them was very friendly. Drop sheets were used to protect my floor, and after they were done I couldn't tell that anyone was ever there. I feel very comfortable recommending New Balance, and will use them again in the future.

This was during the very hot summer of 2011 and my blower motor went out. They came out right away and replaced the blower motor; however, after the replacement, the a/c system did not work as well as it had before. I could not get my house to cool below 83 degrees when before it would cool to 77 easily. Even after several days of colling, the a/c system was weak and my unit is les than 2 years old. I called them back and the man I talked to was rather incredulous and had a condescending attitude. they called back later and said that it might be the blower motor and came out. They checked the motor and proceeded to try to sell me whole system - furnace, dict work etc... Their estimate was reasonablebut they maintained that the motor was fine and refused to replace it. I can't be 100% sure that they used some type of aftermarket model or something that was less effective but I feel very cautious about this business and won't be using them again.

It is regrettable that the member waited more than three months to provide this feedback of distrust which indicates a misunderstanding about the work that was performed and the follow-up effort to reconcile the problem by our company. A review of the invoice as well as discussioin with the service technician and President, the information that the customer didn't mention in this review is that the furnace and coil in the attic is at least 15 years old, not two. Only the outside condensing unit was recently replaced by another company. After the customer's initial complaint about the newly installed fan motor, buth the service tech and preisdent did a follow-up inspection of the work at no charge to the customer. The fan motor was the correct HP, voltage and phase. It was drawing the proper amount of amps, and the temperatrue drop across the evaporator coil as good. Whoever changed the condensing unit approximately two years ago, did not change the evaporator coil and furnace in the attic so the system is not properly matched. To remedy this situation, it was suggested that the customer replace the furnace and coil. We remain commited to our goal of customer satisfaction and promise of quality work. We again recommend that the old furnace and evaporator coil be replaced in the attic to match the outside condensing unit, and New Balance A/C, Inc. will deduct the full cost of the fan motor replacement from the installation cost of the new matching furnace and coil.

Called about 9am, said they could make it same day which is always good. Techs got delayed so the boss showed up 2pm to look at my system in his personal truck. Something is causing the compressor to shutdown. Suspected a bad fan motor, bearings are really loud, not something he brought with him and the contactors look burt. There 's no electrical cut off on wall. Est $1350. Tech to return in AM with motor, cut off box and contactor. This gave me the chance to discuss air flow into a 2 story entry that was reconfigured during a remodel. Est $350... much less than ARS who wanted to reconfigure everything. Svc contract on my units would include a coil clean, drain blow out, freon check and 5% off any parts needed. $417 for all 3. OK... nothings been done to these since I bought the place, 3 yrs ago. Two guys show at 9am, one gets on the motor/electrical box the other starts the cleaning/check up on the attic units. After the motor has been in for a half hour some obstruction in the coil is causing high pressure to shutdown the compressor. The new coils now use "Al Gore" Freon so I gotta do the whole enchilada. Well the unit was 11 yrs old. $5600 for 13 seer $6500 for 14 seer. Will credit me back for the fan motor, electrical cut off, contactor and svc agreement on the dead unit. Went for the better unit... ordered for next AM. Guys finished up with remaining two units to return in the AM with new system. 5 guys, 3 trucks at 9am - 1pm installed the new system and add the duct I wanted. They put down tarps to protect my carpet, tied my chandelier back while cutting my wall in entry hall, had uniforms and wore those little booties while in my house. They will return one day next week to check system operation and make sure I'm pleased. (I would have been more pleased if it was $1350 or Al Gore hadn't got involved.) I didn't shop this so I may have over paid, dunno... 5% off the price in the book. Everybody's gotta make money to stay in business.
Description of Work: A/C blowing hot. Replaced 3.5 ton condensor and evaporator coil, aux drain pan, float sw, condensor pad and disconnect box. Added one extra 7" duct and grill. Clean coils and condensor blow out drain lines on two other units. (svc agreement)

I received 12 quotes from 10 contractors for just the coil -- ranging from $1500 to $2900. Many contractors pushed a whole AC systems ($5K-$7K), and some pushed whole HVAC (including furnace), as a "better" solution ($5K to $12K). Since system is barely 10 yrs ago with no issues with the blower, the furnace quotes were definitely overboard. With proper maintenance good systems are reliable for 15 -20 yrs. Glen (salesman) arrived on time and and reviewed my downstairs system, both the condenser (outside) and the coil (inside). After completing his analysis of the systems he asked about my electric bills. He proceeded to explain his proposals to address my situation with a focus on their potential impact on my electric bill and a possible Fed tax credit. NOTE: New Balance was the only contractor not to provide a formal written proposal either during the visit or by email afterwards. 1) A coil only solution. Highest of all 10 coil-only bids. It was almost twice the lowest bid. I did not capture any additional information on that proposal, since Glen did not dwell on it, recommending either of the other two proposals. 2) The "better" solution: Replace coil and condenser. The condenser would be a 13 SEER unit (minimum rating for all AC system replacements) made by York with a 10 yr wty. (10 yr was the longest wty of any mfg or contractor). In addition they would provide servicing for the first year (two trips) at no charge. Consumer Reports indicated that York was more prone to breakdowns than those made by other mfgrs (eg Rheem & Rudd; See July 2009 issue) This bid was almost 50% higher than other proposals for AC replacement. 3) A third proposal offered a lesser grade 13 SEER condenser (Guardian; see CR) with shorter wty (5 yr) and without the first year of AC service. This bid was still higher than all other AC replacement bids except for #2 above. New Balance would honor their promotion on Angie's list ($150 off.)
Description of Work: The auxiliary drain pan had just about rusted through on my downstairs AC unit. The coil had been leaking for 2 yrs onto the pan and needed to be replaced as well. It was a cheap, builder grade, poorly installed coil. But it functioned over 10 yrs. New Balance was one of HVAC contractors I contacted for a quote to "fix" my AC.

Response from New Balance A/C Inc
We would rather apologize once for our price than to apologize over and over again for poor quality work. You might note the results from the low bid that the customer accepted.

We found New Balance A/C through two neighbors who used them to install new A/C & Furnace systems this year. They both had very good experienc using the compay's services. The work went exactly as they said it would. All of the work took 1 1/2 days. They removed and hauled off existing furnace and air conditioner and concrete pad. Flush and nitrogen purge of existing A/C freon lines. Installed new 21 seer rating A/C, Installed new 95% efficent furance, Installed new Transition w/Access Door to access coils, Installed new Drain Pans, Installed new Plenum w/Dampers, Installed 2 Surge Protectors, Installed new Thermocouples-one outside and one inside-and new Thermostat to control humidity. They cleaned up after themselves the first day and the second. The new system is quiet and working as we were told it would. Update: Began using Air Conditioner but no cool air?? Called the company on Sunday morning. The person who called me back was the president of the company. He is the person who actually came to the house to add R-22 on Sunday afternoon. Apparently the leak was larger than thought and by Monday afternoon it was not cooling again. He had a crew at my home the next day. They found the leak and all seems to be working now. Very impressed that the company president took such hands on approach to see that his customers are happy.
