Description of Work: I called John Moore yesterday because I have an A/C unit that has stopped blowing cool air. The scheduled their no charge estimate appointment for today. They called this morning to let me know that a technician was on ready to come. I told them that I have a tenant in my home and that he was there and they could come on over. When the technician arrived, he ask my tenant if he was the owner. He said no, he was the tenant. The technician then told him that if he was a tenant, that he would have to pay 49.00 or the estimate wouldn't get done. My tenant told him that he would have to speak with us. Then technician left. I called John Moore customer service and explained what was happening and expressed that I thought the "bait and switch" was not right. I asked him to explain why it made a difference in the service depending on who was at the house to let them inspect the unit. He made up some story about insurance. I asked to speak to a supervisor who told me it was "company policy" and that there was nothing he could do about it. Within the last two weeks, my son also had a problem with them where a technician just walked out on the job because he didn't like the questioning my son gave him. Someone from Management called and got the situation corrected for my son. I thought I would give them another chance....so sorry that I did.....I would not recommend this company. An honest company does not play "bait and switch" with the customers.

Dear Customer, Thank you for bringing this to our attention. While it is our policy to charge a $49.00 deposit if the homeowner will not be on site when the technician arrives, this should have been explained to you at the time the appointment was created. Had that happened, it seems there would not have been any complications with this appointment. We have addressed that issue to ensure that this does not happen again. Please accept our sincere apology for this inconvenience. We hope that you will try John Moore again and if you have any other issues that you would like to discuss, we encourage you to contact our Customer Care Department at 713-730-2525. Thank you

Description of Work: They advertise on television, 'free breaker box check'. We called because of the new electric meters being required by the electric companies. We were very pleased with the work, almost as we were totally shocked at the cost. They were neat, very informed and prompt. Since the service was necessary, it needed to be done because of the safety issues in an older home. We could have and maybe should have, had more estimates. We just elected to go with John Moore solely based on their television ad and the need for prompt service. We did have time, just did not or maybe we did,use it properly. We tend to go with the first estimate, rather than taking bids. So my comments should only report that John Moore does very good work, just a little pricey. (but one usually pays for what they get).

Description of Work: Called John Moore Services to get an estimate on purchasing and installing a whole-house surge protector. for our 6-year old home. Instead of discussing the surge protector, the service technician (Spencer) went about assessing and diagnosing our entire electrical system and pronounced it "dangerous". Two years ago, this same John Moore technician had given our electrical system a complete assessment and pronounced it fine. That was in response to some appliance damage incurred when another company made a mistake while installing a gas generator for us. Nothing in our electrical system had changed in that period. He gave us a proposal of $600 for the surge protector PLUS $5400 for the other electrical work he said we needed. He told me to be sure to specify that I wanted him to do the work when I called John Moore Services. He said that if they tried to send someone else, to insist on having him do the work I called John Moore Services and asked if these technicians work on a commission basis -- they do! This explained the huge estimate for work we don't need and his insistence that I specify him to do the work. I called another electrical firm. They looked at our breaker box and electrical system and said everything was fine, that we just needed about $200 of work done on the neutrals breaker box. We got them to do the work and install the surge protector. It is a very bad idea, a huge conflict of interest, to have technicians be paid on a commission basis. We are relying on them to give us honest diagnoses and estimates; however they are relying on commissions -- the more work the greater the commission. Whether or not you actually need the work done is apparently irrelevant.

Description of Work: Central heating unit was not coming on. Called John Moore because it was a weekend and a very cold night. Tech guy came out on time, did a five minute check and said that the gas valve needed to be replaced. Estimated cost $900. I told him that was more than I could afford and that I would call AHS to put in an order. He called back later and said he could do it for $650. I told him that AHS would be coming out the next day (Sunday) since it was going to be freezing. When AHS came on Sunday, they spent five minutes also, pressed a re-set switch and the problem was fixed. Total cost $60 for the service call. I will never trust John Moore or recommend them to any of my friends.

Description of Work: Installed new water heatergreater than Were late in arriving and estimated they would be definitely finished by 6Pm ( they arrived at 3PM. We had asked about this ahead of time since we put our crazy friendly lab in a kennel to stay out of their way. At 8PM, we told the worker they needed to leave and return the next day. ( my wife was driving around with the dog in her car!). The next morning we saw that our front steps were broken (brick). No one had said anything and we immediately placed a hold on our check. that afternoon (sat) the supervisor came out after several phone calls and informed us that the steps would be repaired and that the installation was incorrect as well. He could not believe the installer was at our house until 8PM. The worker/installer never said a word about breaker the steps when they moved the water heater in or the old out. We could have dealt with that - mistakes happen. But to say nothing was very unprofessional. The gentleman who came to repair/replace our front steps was excellent and efficient. We are still having trouble with murky water in our tub and have been told by two plumbers (other than John Moore) that we did NOT need a new water heater! Needless to say, we would never contact them again for service.

Description of Work: The Pilot light on the furnace would not light after many attempts. John Moore Service came out, The service man went up into the attic and took a look at furnace. The Service man said that the heater pilot gas valve was not working on the furnace. Since the furnace is 20+ years old he recommended replacement of the furnace. The John Moore service man proceeded to generate a quote on his computer and printer. The quote for replacing just the furnace (3 1/2 tons) for 1,200 sf house was $12,950. Yes $12,950! The quote included a furnace at $3,900 plus replacing the insulation in the attic $3,800, re-decking the attic around the A/C Heater $700, replacing all of the ducting... for a total of $12,950. On each line item they said to bring this item up to "Code". In my opinion quoting huge up-selling of product and services and pressuring customers to bring old units up to "Code" is not ethical. In my opinion John Moore Services has no Integrity and is not ethical. John Moore is on my do not call list...and I will also inform all of my friends and family to not call John Moore Services. Premier A/C will be installing a new furnace and installing some new duct work for $2,200. John Moore Service quoted $3,900 to replace the Furnace as part of their $12,950 estimate.

Description of Work: We had a leak in the pipe under the bathroom sink. The agent for John Moore came and replaced the pipe and charged more than $200. The very next day the leak was still present. Another agent from John Moore arrived and claime that the pipe had been installed crookedly. He said it is now fixed and didn't charge us anything further. However, that afternoon my wife put some brown paper under where the leak was. Sure enough, the next morning the paper was wet, so we called John Moore again. A third agent arrived, took the pipe apart and installed a piece of silicon tape where the two pipes connect. The pipe no longer leaks. The experience makes me wonder whether installing a new pipe in the beginning was really necessary (for $200+) or would a piece of silicone tape have done the job much more cheaply. No, I don't think John Moore will be coming to my house in the near future.

Description of Work: Called John Moore about having problems with hot water in our house. I told them that maybe the circulating pump was having problems. Two "plumbers" came out and told me that the circulation pump was out and needed to be replaced. Gave me an estimate for replacing the circulation pump - from $1700 - 2000 depending on the pump I picked. They also told me a thermocouple needed replacing for $200. The plumbers/salespeople also gave me all these quotes for hot water heaters which I didnt understand because my hot water heaters are fine. I didnt understand why the pump needed to be completely replaced because we were getting hot water in several parts of the house. Also, a quick internet search showed me that the pump that they wanted to replace costs about $300-400.I sent them on their way. The next day I had a highly recommended plumbing company send out someone to get a second opinion. He told me that the pump was fine and working. He said the only problem was a wire close to the pump that would sometimes turn off the pump for energy saving purposes, and that the wire should be repositioned. He also said a thermo couple was not needed. I additionally found out that the pump I have is the highest quality, that they last forever, and that if anything does go wrong it usually just involves replacing a $100 part. I feel that the John Moore "plumbers" were not trustworthy and have the feeling that I was being scammed.

Description of Work: We had a leak in our kitchen floor. It was determined that the water pipes had shifted in the foundation during settling process. We contacted John Moore to drill thru the foundation to repair the pipes. We later talked to a contracter who worked for John Moore and he said he was paid $800 to do the drilling; we paid $12,000. We did not know John Moore had a 24 hour crew, so when we were told they would show up the next day, we waited all day and the repairman showed up at 5:00 PM. When we complained that we had waited all day, the young man became angry and left our house and said that he would not work for anyone who talked to him like that.

Don't call John Moore!
Description of Work: We have a spare room that we do not use. I walked in there and all the carpet was soaked. We discovered a leak in the ceiling in the closet. It had been leaking for some time. We called John Moore and they came out and said the over flow from the air conditioner upstairs was clogged. He gave us an estimate to fix it. We said go ahead. He was under the sink for a few minutes and left. Meanwhile we started cleaning all the soaked drywall and carpet out of the spare room. We noticed that evening the overflow pipe that had caused the flood in the spare room started spouting water again. We called John Moore back out and they came the next morning. The man again got under the sink and said it was fixed. Guess what that evening we had the same problem. Again John Moore came out and this time he finally fixed it. Meanwhile we had cleaned all the drywall, etc from the spare room but it still smelled like mildew. John Moore sent out a man to give us an estimate on drying out that room. He said they would spray all the wood with a chemical to kill the mildew, drill holes in the wood for penetration, install fans and a dehumidifier for three days and it would cost us $875.00. Felt it was high but we thought they would be doing a lot of work. Two men came out the next day, put in a fan and a dehumidifier and left. Three days late one man came back and took them away. That was it. BUT most importantly the room still smelled like mildew. We called John Moore back. The person said we would have to talk to a supervisor and they would call us Monday. No call. Luckily they had not deposited our check so we stopped payment on it. We continue to call with no response. Finally wrote a letter to them and pointed out we had stopped payment and all that had occurred. This letter was written about three weeks after their ignoring us. We immediately got a call back and they wanted to come out and "fix" the problem. We feel they would never have come back if they had our money. To charge $875 for what they did was outrageous and then not to bother to call us back was inexcusable. Told the person who finally called us back I would never use John Moore again. Three call backs to fix a plugged drain and then never fixing the mold/mildew problem is inexcusable. They advertise that they do not charge to come out and give an estimate. Believe me they work that call into what they charge you. And the mildew smell removal was just a plain rip off.

Description of Work: We had an issue with our kitchen sink...we thought it was just a simple clog. We call John Moore about 9AM on Saturday and they told us to expect someone between 11AM and 2PM. Several phone calls went back and forth and they continued to tell us that we were in the rotation. Apparently they were a lot of customers in the rotation because they didn't show up until nearly 6PM. Good thing it wasn't an emergency. Having said that, Gary was WONDERFUL once he arrived. He was polite, professional, and extremely helpful. In the end, the problem was bigger than we originally thought. Gary explained the situation, ran out to get the parts and had it fixed in no time. We will absolutely use John Moore for our next pluming issue. But we have learned our lesson and will call Gary directly.
