+ -1 moreWe called out Peace of Green for a landscaping project. While he was there I also asked him about a couple slow leaks in our irrigation system. He talked me through what he thought the issue was. The landscaping project would take more time and we had to wait a week or two to get it done - however he wanted to come by and address the irrigation system leak as soon as he could. Within a couple days he was back at our house and fixed everything better than expected. What impressed me was he seemed to genuinely want to help us get the water leak under control as quickly as possible. He didn't try to up sell us on anything for the system. His advice was just what we needed. Based on my experience with James, I plan to call them for anything we need for landscaping or irrigation in the future.
Description of Work: In this visit he fixed 3 major leaks in our irrigation system. Including replacing the sprinkler heads, and replacing piping.

+ -1 moreI emailed owner "do you work in our zip code?" He said "yes" & came to give bid, followed by detailed, 1-year contract that our yard would be maintained 100% "to the highest standard". The crew arrived 7:30 p.m., absolutely exhausted--learned they do 12 yards a day! Ours is small, many aren't. Did nice job trimming 2 bushes, had mower that couldn't fit through our gate & 8'-tall weed-wacker. They weed-wacked backyard, looked very rough. Did some trimming as requested. Next visit at 7:00 p.m. (but they brought smaller mower), next at 5:30, next a morning. Skipped rainy week--no problem; that's part of Houston weather. We were told to email weekly requests, but less & less got done. Office says they can NEVER tell exactly when they'll come. Sprinklers were checked out & some repaired, but back 4 never looked at & several along sidewalk ditto. Another service will fix those tomorrow. This young business is trying to do landscaping, pool maintenance, & yard maintenance...& have the wife paint a house, too, from the Woodlands to far-west Houston. It's a crazy business model! They now say they will shrink their service area because their range now is too h****** "the crew" (we were told they had many crews, for all those services). Maybe they are shrinking their service area, maybe not. "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is" = Peace of Green. Don't hire them. Good intentions without follow-up mean nothing. They fixed what they broke; the crew trims bushes nicely. Don't count on the service. Your yard will look awful for 10 days at a time. We would gladly have paid MUCH more to get the service described in the (worthless) contract and be spared the frustration of doing business with this company. We're dealing with a lot right now & Peace of Green added considerably to our stress.
Description of Work: For months of June & July: Lawn mown on no schedule at all; lawn fertilized at double-strength, burning out big patches of grass; no edging, so grass trailing into beds & not removed; rare weeding; sprinklers checked & repaired with back sprinklers missed & one left dead, but pipe cut during check-up repaired; bushes trimmed twice VERY nicely but other requests ignored; French door broken by too large weed-wacker repaired by owner's wife very professionally, while we couldn't leave house for 2 days for security.

Description of Work: Removed eight indian hawthorne bushes, one crepe myrtle tree, laid new rocks along bed perimeter, added sod, topsoil, and mulch.

+ 0 morewhen he started of by saying, "i'm going to be honest with you" i knew i wasn't going to get my yard done. he pretty much told me my yard was too small for his big company. he usually does big homes for $125.00 and i could get mine done for $30.00 and he would have to charge me 3 times that much. never could look me in the eye. then he finished it off by saying his company does commercial work. i never really said nothing except o.k. so it was very short. i wouldn't hire anyone whose heart just isn't in his job $$$$$$$$$$$. i had spoke with Melanie the day before(7-24-2012)over the phone. it was a much longer conversation than with the guy they sent out. i explained my situation and nothing was said about only doing large or commercial jobs. what a big waste of my day since they scheduled my appt. between noon and 2 pm. he showed after 1pm
Description of Work: someone came out to the house. that's as far as it went. i bet we didn't even speak for a minute.

I cannot stress enough how friendly, personable, and responsible they were with my landscaping and yard, which had to be completely remade after serious foundation work and the drough wreaked horrible damage on it this year. It looks like a completely different yard! Highly recommended and went the extra mile to fit our needs, even with a few unexpected surprises.

+ 2 moreWe had two HUGE rainy days and I thought ... well there goes my landscaping installation. But NO - his team showed up and on the first day did all of the dirt work and bed building. Second day all of the plants went in, mulch laid down, and the clean up of the yard occurred. They did a great job! Everything came out WAY better than I expected! James called me the evening of the second night to see if everything was good. I had two minor concerns plus one concern about a plant's healthiness. He addressed them all very quickly. We absolutely recommend his work and will use him as our go to landscaper from now on!
Description of Work: We have a large corner lot that needed some updating landscape. Spoke with his office which gave me a date/time for James to come out for an estimate. He arrived promptly on our Friday appointment and took notes as we walked through the yard. Before he left he gave me a quote for all of the different services I wanted. I was surprised by the quick turnaround of a quoteand since I was eager to get going a gave him a check on the spot for half of the work to be done. Over the weekend, I became concerned that I had just handed a $1,000+ check to a guy without a contract or guarantee of service. But, remembered all of the great reviews here on Angie's List so I didn't panic too much. On Monday, I called the office to ask for a contract which he had prepared and it was sent to me email. I noticed a few items NOT on the contract that we discussed so asked for clarification. Within the day and via email (yea) - we had it all resolved. I was told that his crews could probably be out there on Thursday/Friday.

They left the fill on my front yard for a week due to work issues (killing it in the process) then when they filled the pool, it was obvious they had used the worst garbage fill they could find. Bricks, asphalt, all sorts of nasty stuff was in there. I called James and he came out and gave me a quote. Felt comfortable with him at every step. More than once, he would ask a question of what I wanted here or there. I would respond with "you're the landscaping guy, you tell me what I want there". I was satisfied with his answers at every turn. He gave me a quote and I accepted. He told me work would start in about a week. A day later, he asked if he could start sooner. Two days after the bid, he began work. His crews were respectful and worked hard. Again, I was satisfied at every turn. The completed job looked better than I had expected when I accepted his quote for the work. We went over the operation of the sprinkler system, common issues with them, easy money saving maintenance, the whole thing. I would use James again without hesitation. If you read this, thank you James. Great work.

I left work early to make this appointment and since I get paid by the hour this time cannot be made up. This happens quite often. This is why I chose Angie's List. I was hoping that an "A" meant "A". Now I've lost 4 hours of work and 2 weeks on my project. May as well chose an "F". Can't be any worse than working with Peace of Green.

+ 5 moreJames came out to give me a quote within days of my call and was willing to start work right away. His crew were hard working guys - each and every one had an amazing work ethic, which, in my opinion, is a rare commodity these days. The initial job was the drainage area, patio, 8 Japanese Yews and tree removal. By the time this work was done, I asked them to come back the next week to plant the 900 jasmine plants, 12 Japanese Yews and mulch the entire yard. I was that impressed! I was absolutely recommend Peace of Green to anyone looking for a landscape company.
Description of Work: James and his crew did a fabulous job on my yard including removing 5 trees & replacing with grass, extending a flagstone patio, reconfiguring a drainage area including a retaining wall, mulching my entire 1 acre yard, planting 900 jasmine plants and 12 Japanese Yews.

+ 2 moreJames is so easy to work with. He knew just what to do, but I could tell he would have worked with me had I known what I wanted. He was very kind, patient, and professional. I needed it done relatively quickly and he did a great job of seeing to it that it was completed within my time frame. He was there supervising for most of the job and he was always readily available. He and his crews were great. I was also very impressed with the clean up after the job was finished. I think my patio and sidewalks were cleaner afterwards than before. It was so nice to sit and enjoy my beautiful yard!!! Oh, and my husband was so pleased with how our yard looks now. I also plan on switching to Peace of Green for my lawn service.
Description of Work: I am not very creative when it comes to any kind of design, especially landscaping. James came to provide ideas and an estimate fordoing my flower beds in the front and back yard. He had some great ideas. He knew just what needed to go where and added lots of color and texure to the flower beds. He added 2 stone walk ways, one on the side entrance of the house and one in the back. He also changed the shape of the back yard beds and added stone borders, and put in a beautiful brick flower bed around a big oak tree on the side of the house (we are on a corner lot so it is actually on the street side). All in all, I think he put in about 70 plants and 3 trees.

This past Christmas (Christmas 2011), he surprised the heck out of us by HAND-DELIVERING (not on his day to do the lawn, either) a red poinsettia and a Christmas card THANKING US FOR BEING A CUSTOMER!! We also recently received a survey postcard asking us to evaluate his services. We've NEVER had a lawn maintenance company do anything like they did for us the first time they came out to service our lawn, and we've DEFINITELY NEVER had a lawn maintenance company thank us with a card and especially not a poinsettia for being their customer. Description of Work: In case you don't want to read this long "fairy-tale-come-true". let us say this: Peace of Green Company is worth EVERY penny you pay them. Unless James retires or something happens completely out of character against the lawn maintenance he and his company have provided us with for almost a year now, we will NEVER need another lawn maintenance company again because PEACE OF GREEN HAS IT ALL AND THEN SOME. They went above and beyond the first day of service and continue to do so almost a year later. James visited with us to give us an estimate on how much he would charge. We had a very bad experience with H. P. Lawns (Harrison Prince lawns; see our review on H. P. Lawns). James met with my husband and walked through our front and back yard. During the walk-through, my husband told him not to worry about the 6' tall weeds in one corner of our yard and also 6' tall weeds in our 8' x 8' vegetable garden. He told James we would take care of that. Right away, he also mentioned our yellow rose bush possibly needing to be cut all the way back to the ground because of a disease he noticed on the bush. It was immediately apparent that he cares and knows what he's talking about. Lonnie got home the day that James and his crew were scheduled to have been to our house for their first lawn maintenance. He was so proud and grateful for what he saw when he arrived home from work that afternoon, he took pictures to email me at work. Not only was I so grateful for James and his crew, I was relieved that finally, FINALLY, we found someone who did it right, and went above and beyond. The pictures didn't begin to compare with what I saw when I arrived home. Aside from mowing the lawn, James and his crew had weeded the beds, edged so that the bed borders were defined, and trimmed the bushes. Additionally, they put the few stones back on the bed border where they were supposed to go (H. P. Lawns had removed them and never put them back). They cleaned up two, incredibly narrow and small beds on either side of the short sidewalk leading up to our front door which none of the previous lawn maintenance companies we'd had had ever done before. They also swept EVERYTHING. In the back yard, everything Lonnie told them not to worry about because "we'll do that" (for example, the tall weeds in the corner of the yard, the tall weeds in our garden...which had grown to be more like a thicket) was all taken care of. Our garden looked BRAND NEW and there were no weeds in the corner. Additionally, they cleaned off and made neater our front porch, short sidewalk, driveway and back patio making everything neater and having swept everything. They even went so far as to remove several items that were slated to go to the curb for the next trash pickup. He and his crew went above and beyond that day and have ever since. We were so happy with the service and have recommended him to several other family and friends. One who used his company to do their lawn after we'd had weeks of rain (even though they normally cut it themselves) was very satisfied.

He was able to complete the work the next week. My front yard looks great and I don't have to hand water anymore.His team was very professional and worked very hard.I also contracted him to come out once a week to keep my yard and landscaping up. He bills by paypal which is very convenient.I would use him again and am actually considering some work in my backyard.

+ 2 moreJames was very prompt in coming to give me an estimate and was very helpful during his initial visit. He emailed me a picture of what the work would look like when completed and this gave me the chance to make changes before work started. James and his team arrived when they said they would and finished almost on schedule. James did come back one day after the original finish date because his workers had not done the trellis work the way he and I had discussed. This was apparently a miscommunication between James and his men, but James redid the work and it was exactly as I wanted. The only problem that I had was that branches were removed from two hollies which I had not asked to be done. It was not discussed between us during the estimate and if it had been mentioned I would have asked that it not be done. However, James was just trying to be helpful and he was very apologetic. I think the lesson to be learned from this for both prospective customers and James is to communicate with each other and be clear what is to be done and not to be done. Apart from that one disappointment, I was very happy indeed with the work. The flagstone patio and retaining wall were particularly well done and make my yard look far more attractive than it was before. The plantings look great and so far everything is thriving. Everything was cleared up and cleaned and I did not have anything to do except go outside and enjoy my new landscaping. I was happy with James and his crew and would certainly use them again if I need further work done.

Description of Work: We had our back yard landscaped and a butterfly garden put in for our baby girl. The yard looks great, and there was a butterfly in the garden the first night! Peace of Green is very professional, prompt, and reasonably priced. This is the second project they have done for us, and we would not hesitate to hire them again.

+ 1 moreGreat experience. James (owner) was extremely responsive and professional. After spending 2 hours pruning roses and pulling weeds I called James who came right over. The very next day, he and his crew showed up and gave my yard some much needed TLC. The work included trimming/pruning plants and shrubs, fertilized and treated the plants for insects. They also planted a lemon tree I bought a couple days prior, which is doing much better than the one I planted myself.
Description of Work: Cleaned up the landscaping, sprayed for insects and sluggo for snails.

+ 1 moreHe came over, took pictures and gave me a quote for the job. I wrote him a substantial check and requested his tax ID number which he did not provide because he didn't have one. The biggest problem with him, however, is that the job I hired him for, that he said he could do, he was not able to do, and neither could the crew he had either. The job is very unprofessional looking. There are areas that were torn up due to concrete work that he just placed grass over, without actually setting in place. There are wires hanging all over the place from a lighting system that was poorly installed. My phone lines are messed up, as are my water lines. All in all, my backyard is just undone. Last night he told me that he would come over and rectify the situation and he stated he would not charge me the other half of the job. When I tried calling him about the job, he just started yelling and making excuses. He did give me a time to come over and fix it, but he never showed up. I've decided that I don't want him to come back at all, I will hire someone else to fix and finish this. The individual that I worked with and his crew were very friendly, for the most part, and I am a small business owner, myself, and I realize that no one is perfect, and we get in situations that aren't easy to deal with, but he was very unprofessional in how the situation was handled, and that's what bothers me the most.
Description of Work: I had some flagstone left over from a patio and I hired him to arrange them into two separate flower beds.

+ -1 moreI called James after seeing his good reviews on Angies List. He came out immediately as he was in the area, gave me an estimate of $1600 for the irrigation, pump, sod, and beds. He claimed that the pump was $800 itself. I called him back the next week to schedule the work, and I had people at my house on Wednesday that week digging the trenches and putting in the drainage system, leveling everything, and digging the hole for the pump and the box it is put into. They closed it down at about 6 that night, leaving them only needing to refill the trenches and start leveling the yard. I went to work the next day thinking that everything would be done upon returning, but came home to nothing being done. Knowing that a large storm system was approaching the next day, to say I was irate would be an understatement. I called James, and he explained that he did overextend himself on projects a bit and would have this taken care of immediately. Within the hour he had his wife and 4 other men at my house finishing the install. If you have ever worked with contractors before, you know that things like this happen, but James really stepped it up, although him not covering up the system would have cost him double with the upcoming monsoon. The next three days it rained, and we got to test out the system. First off, the sub pump and the box it had came in was getting undercut by water falling into the hole, causing the pump to float up out of the ground. Second, do to the rush of getting everything done last minute, it appeared that the back yard was not leveled properly to ensure that the water flowed to the new catch drains. All of this was fixed after the rain subsided. The pump and the box containing it were cemented into the ground with rebarb holding it in place. The ground was re-leveled and new sod and mulch were put down. Since then everything has been working great. I am just fighting trying to keep all the grass alive now, but hey, that is texas for you. All in all, we ran into some problems along the way, but James and his crew managed to get the work in a professional manner. I would highly recommend him to anyone in my family and to my friends. To have a contractor live up to his word and not quit on a tough job is everything.
Description of Work: Basically I was having flooding issues due to sheet flow coming into my yard from my neighbor's yard. The water was pooling up near my house, and I needed to install drains and get a sub pump installed to help lift the water to the street as well as install some power sources in my yard to power the pump. In all it was about 50-100 feet of pipe that was installed. After that, we shaped the dirt so that the yard would drain properly, sod was put down, and the beds were re-mulched.
