The service started with visiting my house for an estimate. David explained what he planned to do. He follow the plan in time and manner. He was extremely puntual since they first day he came to make an estimate. They did wood unit walls customized to the size and designed I wanted and they were very patient. The job was done exactly in the time he said since the beginning. They left the house clean.}
Description of Work: Five Star Painting was surprisingly puntual. They kept me informed of the time they arrived and left every day. The crew was very clean and professional, and I felt safe leaving them work at my home.

The job went as quoted, was completed on time and we are happy with the results. Cleanup of the outside brick could have been better and they used oil based enamel on the interior over existing latex which was a mistake but the end results are OK. Communication could have been better.

The entire team did an awesome job and Dave is a stickler for detail. More than once did he required the crews to redo something because it wasn't to his (or my wife's) liking. They were timely, efficient, professional and experts in their fields. I have already recommended them to others and will continue to recommend them. They do a great job!
Description of Work: We had a complete kitchen remodel. They stripped the kitchen to the frame work - both walls and ceilings. The project took approximately 5 weeks which we felt was fantastic. Dave quoted 4 - 4.5 weeks so other than a few weather delays they were right on time with their estimate. Dave and his teams did an excellent job. The crews were on time everyday and generally worked until they finished the project. There were a couple of days where they worked beyond 6PM because of the weather delays. Dave was here everyday participating in the remodel. We have used other contractors in the past and we have never worked with a team that was as professional as this team. Every evening, the project was cleaned up completely. The guys were very courteous and very professional and were clearly experts in their fields. We had the plumbing in the kitchen updated which included a tankless water heater. We had new electrical and lighting, new sheetrock, new custom cabinets built, hardwood floors refinished and new countertops installed. All the walls and cabinets were painted and the hardwood floors were refinished.

They did quite an extensive work. They did a very complete and a good job of it, they gave a guarantee with that. They weren’t pushy, very thorough, cleaned up well, and I would certainly use them again. I think they are very professional and one would like the job that they do.

Owner came to home to provide quote for bathroom remodel on a Tuesday prior to home being sold. Stated that he would provide quote on the following Monday. I did not receive a quote, phone call or any communication. If he didn't want my business, he could have just said something. Seemed nice enough, but no further communication was not appreciated.

I did provide a proposal to this customer, however it was later than she had hoped to receive it. The extensiveness of the project required compiling information from subcontractors and the process to provide a comprehensive proposal took 20 days. I should have communicated this process to the potential customer.

I called Five Star Painting and Remodeling to get a bunch of services done and before I got words out he quickly shut me down and said he would call me back. It was not my intention to be remiss in returning this phone call. I receive many calls daily and make every effort to promptly return them. Dave and his team to a wonderful job. He was by far the most responsive of the four or five contractors that I originally reached out to. During the "idea generation phase" some of the contractors that I visited with were encouraging me to expand the scope of the project, add space, etc. Dave encouraged us to stay within the footprint of the house and was effective at maximising the effectiveness of the existing space. We live in a 1960's home in the memorial area... the updated master bath and closet have been very good updates to our home. We've already had Dave and his team back out for some minor remodeling work in the kitchen and have a list of things for him to attack in the spring. Very very easy to work with.

David came over quickly and on time after I made an online request for an estimate. I explained I have had some work done in the past by other contractors I was not happy with. I also explained that as our house is pretty old there are always surprises. I do not want someone that can not adapt to and fix problems that arise. David assured me he could handle anything that might come up. David and his crew were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. They are by far the most professional, hardworking and dependable group that I have ever had work on my house. They went out of there way to make sure even mistakes done by other people were corrected. The paint job they did looks incredible.

I would definitely consider Five Star for future painting needs.
Description of Work: The company owner was upfront upfront from the beginning about the paint job being too small for his company. He went out of his way to have his roofer come to the house in Galveston to look at adding a roof to my porch. We agreed that the porch would be too complex and too expensive.

If you don't like to read lengthy reviews and want the short response: Forget hiring anyone else and go with Dave Summers and Five Star Painting and Remodeling. You will not regret your decision and you will receive beautiful, professional, and timely results. You might save a few bucks by going with a cheaper outfit but you will never receive the same quality results. Continue reading for the longer review... General overview: We hired Dave and Five Star Painting and Remodeling to completely re-do one guest bathroom, plus the paint and sheet rock damage from our foundation settling in our hallway and four bedrooms. Yes, Dave's quotes will come in higher (but not obscene) than other contractors. Don't waste your time. His estimates are the most detailed and thorough you'll probably receive, and they reflect the type of work he does. His crew showed up every day, ON TIME, ready to work. Dave has a crew of 5 that do the general work, and he brings in master subs where needed (electrical, plumbing, cabinets). He coordinates everything and after the first day, they had a key to the house and run of the place, and we never gave it a second thought. His original budgeted time to complete work was 3 weeks. He came in at 3 weeks and two days, only because we special ordered a mirror that took two extra days to come in. His time budget does not include weekends, so you don't have to worry about contractors taking over your house on Saturdays and Sundays. They showed up by 8:30 every morning and were typically done by 6 p.m. EVERYTHING was left clean at the end of the day, and we could move through the house without even knowing it had been worked on during the day. Dave himself can be found vacuuming up behind himself and the crew every evening. Specifics: All sheetrock was repaired spectacularly, and you cannot even tell there was damage. All rooms were painted flawlessly, and his quotes include ceiling, baseboards, trim, and doors. They will do extras if you ask them (we asked for new doorknobs) and work it into their schedule without complaint. Our bathroom was the biggest challenge but we did it all: new counter, custom cabinets, tub/shower, mirror, paint, lighting, etc. Dave had great suggestions on how to make the bathroom more functional and increase the value of our home. He makes suggestions where appropriate but will ALWAYS do what you want him to do. Any suggestions were never with an "upsell" vibe; in other words, he wasn't looking to pad the quote or make more off the work. We ended up with a beautifully updated second bathroom. The crew also re-did the tile and sheetrock/paint in our entry way, and we saw nice little extras we hadn't anticipated: touched up door paint on the inside, and touched up trim. We saw the same nice extra touches in our master bathroom, which we had simply requested be painted; we came home to find that they had also touched up the white cabinets with paint, so everything had a clean and new look to it. In addition, all furniture was well covered and MOVED BY THE CREW. We did not have to prepare anything before their arrival. They even moved and covered heavy bookshelves, and put everything in clearly-marked boxes. Again, touches of professionalism you will not find anywhere else. Bottom line: If you're looking for a hassle-free crew to update your home beautifully, hire Dave Summers and Five Star Painting and Remodeling.
Description of Work: We have a 1960 ranch style home that had extensive interior foundation repair. As a result, we needed to completely re-do the sheet rock and paint in a hallway and four bedrooms, due to foundation settling. In addition, we needed to completely re-do (down to the studs) one guest bathroom.

On the exterior painting, the major challenge was sealing the cultured stone we have around the lower half of the entire house. They etsted sevral small areas to ensure the final outcome. When those attempts were not satisfactory, they called in the specialist from the Sherwin-Williams paint Co. They worked with this specialist to formulate a product that sealed the stone and significantly improved it appearance to the point where is almost looks new. They did such a fine job that we had them come back and paint the interior approxinately one month later...highly recommend!
Description of Work: Five Star performed minor repairs to the house and painted the exterior. They also repaired, reconditioned and stained the deck. One month later, we hired them to paint the interior of the house.

I took advantage of a Big Deal Coupon to finally get inspection and bids on long desired 2 remodeling projects. 1) a built in fireplace on an exterior brick wall and 2) updated kitchen countertops in my circa 1950's house that I have lived in and remodeled several times since 1977.. David responded immediately with an appointment and arrived on time. He presented as an ultimate professional and proceeded to "teach me what I needed to know" about fireplaces. That time spent with David was the most complete explanation I had ever recieved and allowed me to finally make the decision to put the idea out of my mind forever. The kitchen counters was a different story. We looked, talked and finally decided that to do an update also on the sink and lighting as that would allow the kitchen to have a complete updated makeover look for the basic price of the counters. The details that he saw, spoke to and suggested results for were all- inclusive and reflected the eye of a person who takes pride in the finished result. He couldn't give me the exact price at the time because the type of material I chose for the countertops would be provided by a separate installer. I was told Randy Appleby would contact me. He did. The same day! He arrived the next day with the samples and then did the measurement of both the kitchen counters and all the window sills in the house. (Between plants and open windows, they get water just like the ktichen counters :( ) He said David would get the final priced contract to me. He did. The contract was short, In common english with good terms. I was unemployed at that time and anticipated it will be at least August before I can complete the work. David agreed to hold the contract with a $100 deposit. I was very pleased with the entire transaction and look forward to the actual work being done.

It was a total redo, from new floors to tile work to new shower and bathtub install. New cabinets were built on-site (now have two sinks). The new layout and removal of old header (now supported properly) resulted in a much more spacious bathroom. We blended contemporary fixtures (large shower bar with sprayers, bathtub and sink faucets) with rustic slate, beautiful granite, and kept the old decorative window. They even helped with following handicap guidelines, and some ideas for design they hadn't done before. More experienced now in more variety! They were prompt, very clean, very considerate of the impact any re-do has on the home-owners (who didn't save enough to stay elsewhere during it all). They did a wonderful job working with us when changes had to be made due to structure issues and design changes in the doors. A very talented crew of subcontractors who did excellent, thorough, detailed jobs from the ground up. Headed by a very capable, knowledgeable and experienced owner!
Description of Work: Finally able to have the funds to repair hurricane damage to our bathroom. The ceiling had leaked and sheetrock bowed down and the electric was bad. They demolished the bathroom, and in addition found faulty support structures in the wall and roof. Imagine if we hadn't pulled down damaged sheetrock! They made repairs to the structure, installed fresh sheetrock, installed additional plumbing to facilitate separating the shower and bathtub, re-plumbed old corroded pipes before installing sinks, installed new wall for pocket door to closet and built wall to install new door from bedroom. New cabinets were built on-site (now have two sinks).

After interviewing 5 contractors we chose Five Star Painting and Remodeling. David's bid was the highest, but he seemed the most professional. He was charming and quick to give advise on how to safe the customer money. He was the consummate sales man. David and his crew arrived on time. They did a good job on sheetrock repair, texture and painting. However, the electrical work was unacceptable and we had to hire a different electrician to correct David's work. While installing the recessed cans, the electrician butchered the decking in the attic, tore apart one duct joint and did not notify us about the damage. 2 out of 3 light switches he installed were not straight. Repeated requests by us did not result in a correction of the problem. The electrician was unable to make one three way switch work. David came back to correct the problem, was not able to do so and blew us off. We hired a different electrician, who discovered the following: 1.The three way switch for the exterior light fixture did not work, because one light switch was a toggle switch and the other a butterfly switch. 2. Parts of the electrical work in general were shoddy and unsafe. 3. David's electrician had left a spaghetti bowl of wires where he installed the exterior light fixture instead of properly separating the wires. A black wire had already melted, being a potential fire hazard. 4. The ground wire was put on the white wire, which is the common wire. 5. 14/2 wire was used instead of 14/3 wire. 6. The cheapest light switches were used instead of quality light switches. 7. The sheetrock around one light switch had either not been repaired or the repaired sheetrock was still wet, when the light switch was installed. As a result 1 out of 4 screws from the junction box had no sheetrock behind it to support it. David and his crew continued the theme of taking shortcuts and using cheap material. To our dismay we found that the painters had left their paint rolls in all paint cans. Our quality metal dust pan was missing and David replaced it with a cheap plastic dust pan. The spigot he replaced turned out to be a cheap product, whose stem was too short to properly support the handle, resulting in the handle not being tight. In summary, David does a great sales job, yet we found out after he was done, how he cut corners and does not deliver the quality job we had expected given that his bid was the most expensive one. Response to the contractor: I did not say I was very satisfied with his job, I said I was pleased with the paint job and the rest was okay. Most problems and shortcomings were discovered after final payment was made. Contractor did not correct the off-center light switch plate and I expressed that I was not fully satisfied. Contractor used standard light switches and standard 14/2 wire which is not consistent with his claim of using high quality material. Regarding the 'spaghetti bowl' of wires: our electrician was able to straighten out all wires plus replace the one that had already melted. Regarding 3 way switch: contractor was not able to wire it correctly. It could not be turned on from both locations. Regarding the cut in the decking in the attic to install a recess can: In comparison to previously cut decking to install recess cans, the cut carried out by Five Star Painting and Remodeling was NOT neat and clean. Contractors comments that they don't store rollers in paint cans permanently is not true. We found rollers in all paint cans Five Star Painting and Remodeling had used. Regarding access to the house: Prior to signing the contract, it was agreed upon by Five Star Painting and Remodeling and us, that Five Star Painting and Remodeling would be given a key to access the utility room at their own schedule, but that the rest of the hosue, where only little work had to be done, was only accessible to them when one of the home owners was present. They were given a full day to do the little work in the rest of the house and had full access whenever they wanted to the utility room where the major work was done.
Description of Work: Utility room: remove existing shelving. Repair sheetrock (walls and ceiling), float, tape, texture, paint. Replace existing small recessed cans with larger recessed cans. Install two three way switches. Install exterior light fixture. Office: patch up 9 small holes, texture and paint wall. Hall: paint one small wall. Kitchen: move one light switch. Garden: replace spigot Dining room: remove existing chandelier and install two pendant lights.

Response from Five Star Painting And Remodeling
This customer communicated to me she was pleased with the work completed. Her posting is very surprising, considering she expressed to me that she was very satisfied. We are a Super Service Award Winner, and for over 25 years have had a reputation for doing anything it takes to please our customers. During the job, this member told me that her only concern was a light switch plate that was 1/8” off-center. I immediately corrected it. She said she was satisfied. We purchase standard Leviton 3-way switches, which is a quality product. Use of 14/2 wire is standard for this application. The 200 previous jobs my master electrician has completed have resulted in no complaints. The “spaghetti bowl of wires” she mentions is contained in a box that is 2”x4” rectangle containing the wires for the light fixture, a power feed with 3 wires, and 3 wires from the additional 3-way switch, in the same box. It meets all code requirements and enables the fixture to be turned on from both locations, as she requested. In order to install a recessed light in an attic space with decking above, the decking must be cut in order to accommodate the length of the can. This was completed in a neat and clean manner. I located the break in the duct joint this member mentions. When entering the attic, I observed a sag and an air leak in the old-style metal A/C duct pipe. I informed this member. She does not seem to recall that I brought this to her attention, and that it was in no way a result of our actions. The statement made regarding paint cans is inaccurate and misleading. During a job, while painting is in progress, if a small 6”x1” diameter trim roller is used, we will seal it overnight until it is used the next morning. We do not permanently store rollers in cans. this member told me that her dust pan was missing. I replaced it with the most expensive one available at Home Depot. this member requested I install an outside water hose connection. I purchased a solid brass, best-quality available part and installed it. She expresses that it’s not “tight.” This is a positive aspect of high-quality materials, which are easy to operate. this member's requests included that none of my crew enter the house without removing their shoes, no one was allowed to work in parts of the house without her or her husband present, and our 5-man crew was only allowed to work in the utility room each day until 3:30 pm when she returned. This made the project extremely inefficient, however, we respected these requests. In short, given the opportunity, we would have made sure that this customer was satisfied with all aspects of the job, no matter how difficult to please. We stand by our reputation for quality service and attention to detail, and will continue to do so.

David was very prompt in returning my phone call, he set an appointment and arrived on time. He forwarded a bid within 24 hours. He was polite, informative, and very accomodating to our schedule and requests. He also gave us some good recommendations on other repairs that could be done at the same time the rooms were being painted. His crew arrived when they said they would and cleaned up very nicely when they were finished. I have worked with other home improvement and repair companies who do not show up when scheduled (about 90% of them) and the fact that they arrived on time speaks volumes.
Description of Work: Painted 3 bathrooms

Great job. Complemented on by neighbors. Our home was difficult to paint because it's a 2 storey and has a high pitch roof. David Summers and team did a beautiful job.
Description of Work: Replaced many rotten boards outside, including columns and trim work. Diligently caulked many boards to save on energy loss. Beautiful job finding the right paint color. Even painted the mail post by the street. Great clean up after and no spills!
