My home has several large, fixed, low r windows that also have frosting on some. My goal was to have some window protection that, in case I was away, could be installed by my wife. The large window are big enough that it would be work for two to hold up and nail plywood. After an Angies List and web search I contacted several providers of metal screens. Two did not even return calls, one sent an email telling me the square foot cost and stating they would send out someone to estimate if i wished. Troy King of Cat 5 didn't mess around. He and I worked out a date for his estimate and stayed in contact until it was done. I had expressed my concerns about staying within a budget and he worked with me on that, showing me some smaller window that were somewhat sheltered by fences and shrubs. Also, there was one window that i did want alumiminum blinds on but Troy Knig showed me why it would not be recomended at that window becasue on the nature of the brick facade. He could have sold it to me anyway and I would not been any wiser.( I took that oppertunity to go ahead and cut plywood to fit but made it in sections so it would be lighter) His price of $1,445 was within my budget and I told him to go ahead. Covered was three 6ft x 5ft picture windows, three 3ft x 5ft and one french door. The blinds are corrogated aluminum that span the windows or door and each section is some 3 ft wide. They are secured on studs that are mounted on the facings. I had planned on uploading some photos but thought I had better finish this review. When the blinds were ready, Troy and his assistant, I regret his name has slipped my mind, installed the mounts in about 2 1\2 hours. He then demonstrated installation to my wife and I, left me an ample supply of wing nuts and best of all, a map of the windows labeled to match the labels on the blinds. I have used many contractors both at home and in my business and I could not have asked for better service.
Description of Work: Installed aluminum storm blinds.

This company was prompt and professional. They did their work efficiently. I am very happy with the result.
Description of Work: I purchased galvanized steel (plus a few lexan) hurricane shutter panels and attachments from this company. It was Angie's list which led me to them. They are more reasonable in cost than other companies, and the shutters themselves are stored in my garage rather than around or above my windows. Troy and Chris installed the bolts which are permanently affixed to my window trim or brick. These bolts, sprayed with a white film, are then wrapped by a plastic nipple, so they are resistant to weather. When a hurricane approaches, the nipples are taken off and the shutters are affixed to the window trim by specially designed wing nuts. I was amazed that in storing them, the shutters nest together, so my total foofprint for storage (for thirteen windows) is only fourteen inches square. The strength of the shutters is how they are shaped (see their website - cat5hurricaneshutters.com).

The process consists of an initial visit where measurements are taken so that the panels can be custom cut to fit the windows. After that, installation on our home (Heights bungalow) took about four hours. Troy and his team are professional and made sure everything -- including our stack of storm shutter panels -- was cleaned up and put away. Troy even forgot one set of panels in the back of his truck and called promptly to schedule a drop-off of the forgotten set. To say the very least, the peace of mind knowing that, should a storm head our way, we have a ready way of protecting our windows is worth every penny of this service.
Description of Work: We had Cat 5 install galvanized steel (temporary) storm shutters. These are the kind that come as groups of removable panels that correspond to each window on your home. We went with this type of shutter because: they are vastly cheaper than the roll-down type, which cost as much a car even when covering a modest home we felt that permanent storm shutters block too much natural light we do not want to relive the Ike experience, where we arrived back in town just ahead of the storm only to find that plywood was completely sold out throughout the city This type of shutter is fairly easy for two people to install when needed but not impossible for one person to install. Aside from the more manual installation process when compared to roll-down shutters, the only other disadvantage is that you end up with a group of rubber-capped bolts around your windows. We plan to have our house painted this fall at which point the caps will be painted to match the window trim so they should be fairly invisible from the street. I think it's worth the tradeoff.

It was a great job and I would not hesitate to recommend Troy to anyone. Now I only hope I don't have to use them!!
Description of Work: Troy came out and gave us an estimate for the shutters. The time frame was 1 week from the estimate and the work was done on a Saturday. The price was reasonable and the work was done quickly and efficiently without any real disruption at all.

After I sent in my deposit Troy realized that none of his ladders could reach the windows of the third floor of my garden style home safely. He rented a lift at his expense and didn't even hit me up for more money! He arrived the day the job was to begin and he and his partner, Richard Palmer, diligently went about installing our hurricane shutters. We are extremely happy with the result and would recommend Cat-5 Hurricane Shutters to anybody.
Description of Work: After riding out Hurricane Ike and seeing the damage that resulted to friends and neighbors houses my wife and I decided to get hurricane shutters. It is one thing if the integrity of the structure of your house is completely compromised but we wanted to avoid the tens of thousands of dollars in water and structural damage that can result from simply having debris or the wind compromise one single window of your home. We called Troy King from Cat-5 Hurricane Shutters and he came out and talked about the different products his company offers (galvanized steel, aluminum, lexan and kevlar mesh). We asked for a quote for galvanized steel for the whole house which Troy readily supplied. Being from the north and not familiar with hurricanes or hurricane shutters my wife and I were very indecisive. Troy was very patient with us, after we changed our mind twice more he came out and bid the job for lexan shutters on the top floor and galvanized steel everywhere else. We had two other companies bid the job and not only was Cat-5 Hurricane Shutters much cheaper (in one instance several thousand dollars cheaper) but the mounting system Troy uses is much more unobtrusive. The other two contractors used proprietary mounting tracks that were ugly and stood out like sore thumbs. Cat-5 Hurricane Shutters' system uses bolts that are sunk into your window's frame and washers and wing nuts to fasten the panels to your house. So when the panels aren't mounted the mounting screws protrude about 1/2 inch from the frame and are covered by a plastic nipple that can be matched to the color of your window frame. The day after my hurricane shutters were installed my neighbor and I were standing in front of my house and he said, "Hey, I thought you were going to have hurricane shutters installed?" I told him I did and pointed to the screws covered with the plastic nipples and he was amazed at how unnoticeable they were.
