On 5 July 2017 I sent a RFP to two providers, one chosen from Angie's List of "A" rated masonry contractors Brick Restoration Inc (BRI), the second to another rating service widely advertised on the Internet (Other). The RFP included 2 photos of the current wood fence separating the drive from the patio at my home, and 2 photos of another house in the same subdivision with a brick fence and iron gate as I wanted. Other responded first. He looked over the location, asked questions, and 2 days later sent a Proposal for removal of wood fence and gate, construction of brick walls, and providing an iron gate. I began researching Other's background. 2 days after Other responded, Mr. B of BRI called and came out. He measured, discussed the project, and said he would provide a Proposal; however, BRI would not provide the iron gate. I would have to secure gate elsewhere, and BRI would install it. I chose an "A rated" iron gate provider (Gate) from Angie's List, and sent a RFP with pictures of the house in my subdivision with brick fence and iron gate. Because BRI included a certificate of liability insurance with their Proposal, and was a member of BBB as well as rated "A" by Angie's List, I chose to go with BRI for the masonry work, and chose the Angie's rated Gate provider. While I Gate my measurements for a gate 36" wide with two 2" support posts, I entrusted to Mr. B of BRI the task of dealing Gate. Mr. B accepted this responsibility. BRI said work would begin about August 15, which gave Gate plenty of time to construct the gate and have it at my home when BRI began masonry work. On 31 July 2017 Mr. B called to tell me BRI had a job cancellation so they could begin work on the brick fence the following day, 1 August 2017. Though I was somewhat anxious about having the masonry begin before the gate was on hand, after Mr. B assured me he had been in contact with Gate and gave them the measurements for the gate. Assured by Mr. B, I gave the go-ahead. BRI's masonry crew, two native-Spanish-speaking gentlemen, arrived early on 1 August 2017, removed the existing wood fence and gate, and began construction of the brick wall, leaving an opening, sized I presumed to fit the gate dimension provided by Mr. B to Gate. I phoned Gate and asked about the fabrication time on the gate and posts, and was told fabrication began on 1 August 2017 and the gate and posts would go to powder-coated on Friday, 4 August. I telephoned BRI to convey this information to Mr. B. As he was "in the field" and "it is against policy" for BRI to provide the customer with the direct phone number of anyone associated with BRI, I leaft a message with the office person (S) with the assurance she would convey the information to Mr. B. I never heard back from either Mr. B or S. Late on 2 August 2017 after BRI's crew finished the brick wall. The quality of the construction was fine and the appearance was what I wanted. On 3 August 2017, however, on examining it more closely, I noted that total width of the opening left for the gate and support posts was 44". This seemed to me much too wide for a 36" gate and two 2" support posts; but perhaps, Mr. B decided a wider 40" gate would provide a more balanced appearance? Concerned that such a change in spec was made without my approval, I again telephoned BRI and asked to speak with Mr. B. "Out in the field", providing me his direct number was "against company policy," but I could leave a message on his voice mail. I left a voice mail message for Mr. B, telling him of the width of the opening in the brick fence, my concern about the gate already fabricated, and asked him to return my call ASAP. Mr. B of BRI never returned my call. Monday, 7 August 2017, I phoned Gate and was told the gate was finished per Mr. B's specs and was ready for pick up, per my contract with BRI. I again telephoned BRI, left a message on Mr. B's voice mail, that the iron gate was ready for BRI's pick up and installation of same. I asked Mr. B to return my call. Again I did not get a return call from Mr. B. Wednesday, 9 August 2017, I again phoned BRI, told SI had not received a return call from Mr. B, and expressed my concern at the lack of communicaiton. S was apologetic and said they would remind Mr. B to call me. Thursday, 10 August 2017, I received by email an invoice for payment from BRI, even though the work had not been completed, had never been inspected by Mr. B or anyone else from BRI other than the masonry crew, and I had still not heard a word from Mr. B. I telephoned Gate, and asked if I could pick up the gate and other parts, and was told, "of course.' I called BRI, left a voice mail message with Mr. B that I would pick up the gate and have it at my home, ready for BRI to install, asking Mr. B to return my call. Mr. B never returned my call. Friday, 11 August 2017, about 10:00 am, agitated and unhappy at the lack of response from Mr. B or anyone at BRI, I telephone BRI in a quite stern mood. I spoke with S in the BRI office, asked how I could get in touch with Mr. B, and was again told "office policy no phone number, leave voice mail," and she would try to contact him, though he often didn't return office calls either. Now highly agitated, I related to S whole story. When it became apparent to me that she was taking my unhappiness personally, I assured her I understood her position and that I was not angry with her personally, though she understandably told me that it "felt like it" to her. I asked to speak with her supervisor, and was told there was no one.I asked about a company owner; S told me the owners lived in California, and per "office policy" she could not give me the owner's telephone number. I asked that she have an owner phone me ASAP. Shortly thereafter, I received a call from an Owner of BRI from a cell phone in Concord/Palo Alto, California where it was 3 hours ahead of local time. Owner was highly apologetic, acknowledged Mr. B had messed up badly, she had spoken with him, and promised they would have a masonry crew at my home Saturday, 12 August 2017 about 9:00 a.m. I told Owner I would get the iron gate and have it here. I did not hear directly from Mr. B. I asked if I could fax her the paper work and this account of what happened, and Owner said "of course" but the only fax number provided as the number at the Houston BRI office. Owner assured me she would get everything I sent there. I contacted Gate and arranged to pick up the gate before noon 12 August 2017. On arrival at the Gate, and seeing the gate, it was apparent that the gate and support posts together were much too narrow to fit the gap left by BRI in the wall. The gate itself measured 32" and with two 2" supports, the whole assembly measured 36". I asked the Gate office person about how they got this size since I had specified the gate itself to be 36", she told me she had spoken with Mr. B and he told her that the gate and support posts should be 36". Doubtful, she pressed him, she said, about the dimension and was firmly instructed by Mr. B to make the whole assembly measure 36". As there were parts not with the iron gate and posts - latch, hinges, etc. etc. - Gate said she would have her crew deliver the iron gate and all parts by late that evening. Gate had a direct phone number for Mr. B. I phoned him and told Mr. B of the messup, reminded him he had never returned any of my calls, and asked him what would be done to make things right. Mr. B said in a voice that conveyed "No problemo," that his crew would be at my home at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, 12 August. When Gate did not appear by 4:30 pm 11 August 2017, I telephoned and was told that the crew did not get back in time to make delivery, but would do so first thing in the morning of 12 August 2017. 12 August 2017 9:30 am the original crew from BRI plus an English-speaking man (not Mr. B) arrived. Gate had not arrived. I called Gate at 9:30 am and was told a mix up in communication their crew had gone to another location to work but would be directed to bring the gate forthwith to my home. By 10:30 am the BRI masonry crew had finished tear down and was ready to expand the brick fence. But no Gate crew yet, so I again called Gate office; more communication mishap I was told. BRI masonry crew sat and waited. 11:30 am Gate crew, so I called again, and was told the Gate crew was on Hwy 249 coming from The Woodlands to my home. Gate office person was apologetic; through this whole ordeal she was positive and polite despite my obvious unhappiness and distress. At 11:45 pm the BRI crew needed to get to another job, having sat for 2 hours awaiting the arrival Gate crew. They said they would come early Monday morning to finish the brick wall after Gate installed the gate. At 12:15 pm the Gate crew arrived. I phoned BRI and asked they make sure that Mr. B knew his crew needed to be here on Monday, 14 August 2017, as early as possible to complete the finish brick work. Gate crew was finished by 1:30 pm 12 August 2017. At 7:45 am 14 August 2017 Mr. B telephoned to inform me that the BRI crew would arrive between 9:00 and 9:30 am to finish the wall. I thanked him for calling me. At 9:10 am the original 2-man BRI crew arrived. About 12:15 pm the BRI crew finished the wall. These Spanish-speaking gentlemen did beautiful work and were always polite and courteous. The final result is precisely what I wanted, despite the many snafus on the part of BRI. I cannot recommend BRI and I would not do business with the company again.
Description of Work: Scope of work: Removal of existing wood fence and gate on left side of home near backdoor; Construction of a double brick wall approximately 13' in length x 4'3" in height > Wall to have room to install gate and Brick Restoration to install gate.

Dear sir, I'm sorry to see that your experience with our company has caused you to rate us so low despite having a pleasant experience with our work crew and being pleased with the final work being, as you put it, "precisely what you wanted". However, this is not to say that you are not justified in your disappointment. It seems that there were several factors that played in to this less-than-satisfactory experience, one of them being the issues with the gate company as well. Since I can only speak to our company I want to apologize for the lack of communication you experienced on our end and miscommunication on our part when coordinating with the gate company. For us, customer service is equally as important as the final result of the work and we sincerely apologize the former didn't meet the same positive result you had with the latter. I do want to clarify a few things that you mentioned in your review so that others are not misinformed about our company operations. - The woman who you refer to as "S" in our office absolutely should have given you the phone number for your restoration specialist and allowed you to talk to him immediately following any issues you experienced with communication. Normally we do hold off on giving out numbers for initial questions regarding the proposal or any job scheduling because our reps are on the field, either driving or with a customer, and most customer questions are usually better resolved when the rep returns to the office and can safety and accurately look up your job information. We have since adjusted policy and given additional office training so that the office personnel knows when to provide a phone number and when to kindly suggest the rep return the call in the afternoon. We have also adjusted the way we insure messages are recorded and calls are returned to prevent future mishaps in that regard - You mention in your review that our owner is located in California, this is partly true. One of our owners, who is the CFO, works remotely in California. Our founder and president does live locally here but is older and semi retired. I, on the other hand, am local and usually in office everyday to handle the operations. I was out that particular day so you were referred to the next person who could best help with your current situation, our CFO, who I understand was able to help to your satisfaction. I hope that this has been able to bring some peace of mind to the circumstances that lead to your unfavorable experience. We hope you continue to enjoy your new wall and gate. If you ever have any questions or would like to discuss your experience further please feel free to reach out. - Diana

I called in February to set up an appointment and they came right out to look at what I needed done, which was to repair the mortar on my front wall and also to go all around the house and fix any crumbling/old mortar. I signed the "contract" in March and told them I have every other Friday off and would like the work done while I'm there (gave them a list of those Fridays). It went down from there, as least with their response time. March rolled into April when I still hadn't received a call from the technician who was to set up the date and time. I advised them that due to their delay, several Fridays had to be cut from the list and now what was supposed to be a relatively fast job, was now turning into just one lengthy delay after another. The technician never called me to set up the appointment. I had to hound the office for a date and time and when the workers came out, the technician wasn't one of them. It was done quickly, I'll give them that, BUT they never did the work around the rest of the house, which I paid for. I shouldn't have to work this hard to get an appointment and a simple response by phone or email to follow up would have been nice. Courtesy goes a long way. I put down that I wouldn't use them again and I probably won't only because they didn't do the job I asked them to do.

Dear Ma'am, I am sorry to hear you had a less than satisfactory experience with our company. After looking at your job information I do see that we received your approval by email on March 20th. Immediately following, we sent an email stating that our job schedule was currently 2 to 3 weeks out. We have an email response from you saying that you "can wait for whenever we can make it out to do the repairs" and you provided a list of your available Fridays ranging from April 7th - May 19th. Then in a later email you stated dates in June as well. We have several email threads showing a stream of communication between you and our office always with a timely response. Your job was completed and invoiced by May 5th which was one of your suggested Fridays within your time frame. After reading all the email threads between you and the office, I feel the confusion may have come from you wanting to secure one of your suggested dates far in advance and our normal procedure of calling and scheduling work 2-3 days out as stated in the confirmation email sent immediately after the approval. The reason we don't normally schedule work so far in advance is because inclement weather often interferes when dealing with outdoor masonry work and our jobs sometimes take longer to complete, therefore the scheduled work that follows needs to be pushed back. (This is also something we communicate in the confirmation email you received). I hope this helps clarify our intentions and see that we were simply operating within our normal procedure and doing our best to accommodate your requests which I believe we did. As far as the work that you mention was not complete, It is never our intention to leave work undone or to process payments before the work is complete. I have had your rep reach out to you but was unable to reach you. Please contact us at your earliest convenience so that we can correct this and get your work completed. We will of course honor our standard 1 year warranty on all of our work.

They came out when they said they would, described the type of service they could provide, and filled in the hole with a temporary filling until they were able to return to actually fix the brick and mortar. A few weeks after the job was done, you could not tell where it had been fixed: the color of the brick and mortar matched perfectly. They also made my front sidewalk more presentable by cutting up some of the cracked concrete and inserting matching brick (that I already had) in several places to make a nicer look in the front of my house.
Description of Work: There were cracks in brick and mortar along several walls of the exterior of my house. There was also a fairly significant hole in a brick.

They are the only ones in town that advertise the kind of work I needed. They did build up 1 brick that was washing out and put new mortar around it. The mortar did not match other mortar, but they never came back out. The mortar that was patched at the roof line was sloped so that water flowed back toward house and windows when it rained. That was repaired by someone else. I can't get to the very top of the chimney to see what's there. It's hard to justify the expense.

Description of Work: Exterior brick damaged beyond a power-washer's ability to clean it.

That was a very good experience. If I'm remembering that correct the company of my husband used the company that I recommended doing. It was excellent service, very quick, the price was good and did very good work, so we were very pleased. They did a good job. They have excellent prices. We priced it around and they had the best price. The brick didn't quite met. My husband was the one that dealt with them. He didn't complain they were late.
Description of Work: We owned a car wash and someone had backed into a wall of the building and it was a pretty large hole I would say about 3 x 5 foot hole, so they cleaned all of that out and re-aligned the brick in there and made sure that it connected to the same brick in all.
