IN September 2016, I asked Allied Powder Coating if they could remove rust and recoat my four foot outdoor metal sculpture/fountain. They did a nice job arranging to pick it up, completed work in a few weeks, and delivered it back to our home in a relatively efficient manner. Their work on the fountain was good not great. Evidently, they try to get off as much rust as possible, but there is no attempt to repair any damage caused by the rust, therefore some of the fountain surfaces were not smooth. HOWEVER, after several weeks, rust began to appear on my newly coated sculpture fountain. At six weeks, I asked them what to do. Initially, they told me to use a product named Simple Green which did no good. At my next call, they asked for pictures. After I sent pictures that showed considerable spreading rust at 8 weeks after their work was done, they stopped answering all emails and calls. Very unhappy with Allied Powder Coating.

Looked nice when I got it back. After about 6 months however the edges around many of the joints on multiple parts were showing rust signs and now a year later, I am preparing again to have many of the parts disassembled to get them refinished again since the rust spots are increasing. In fairness, and after talking with others, the places where it is rusting are places it might have been difficult to get the coating on thick enough or something like that. This is the reason for the 'C' grading. My primary complaint is that I was relying on them to provide a lasting job and if it couldn't be done then they should have told me so up front. Then I could have made the decision of how to proceed before I had them coated and reassembled. I haven't reached back out the them to complain or correct since the bulk of my time and cost is really in assembly and disassembly and don't want to risk having another bad experience. I found people willing to the work cheaper, but they had a good reputation so I went with them anyways since the disassemble/reassemble was such an issue. When also combined with the cost of having to have it done again, this is why the price grade is a 'D'. If my next project is a simpler part then I would consider using them again.

Price was good; Pickup was good; Delivery took somewhat longer as discussed; Quality of recoating was good. However: The end-caps on the arm chairs are the wrong size, at delivery we mentioned it and delivery folks made picture. Then more then 2 weeks later we called as did not hear anything about it. Then we discussed it with customer service and they checked; the end-caps of our furniture are not available anymore, so they decided to put others on it. They should have called us, to make this decision. The delivery folks also forgot to give us the old caps etc.; they got later delivered by mail.

Dear Mr. [member name removed], I must apologize for this mishap. Although it is stated in documentation that we reserve the right to switch out hardware/end caps if warranted, I do agree that some verbal notice would have been appreciated. That being the case, your situation will be brought up at our next meeting to improve on this process. Once again, apologize for our lapse. Thank you for bringing this to our attention. And we are glad you are enjoying your furniture now.

We are very pleased with the refreshed patio furniture. It has been about 1-1/2 years since we had the service performed, and the coating is wearing well, and still feels and quot;waxy, and quot; even though we ourselves have not yet treated it with the recommended occasional new coat of auto wax. We changed coating colors, and you would never know. Pick up and drop off were handled well. Job completed in a timely manner.

Rust rust rust. Do not waste your time or money with Allied. They do not deal with rust. Salesman implied that within 6 months that if you see rust it will be under warranty. Lies. Called them on 4/3/14 and they said rust is not covered. their recommendation is to wax it. BS. Wax does not do anything to rust. Buy new furniture. it will be cheaper in the long run.

Response from Allied Powder Coating
Good day Mr. [removed member name], I am very sorry to hear about your experience with us. You are correct that we abrasive-blast your furniture down to its original metal. This not only removes surface rust, but it also creates a deeper anchor pattern for the powder coating to bond to. However, due to the manufacturing and construction of these pieces, there are limitations as to how far the blasting and coating can reach. Every piece of furniture is different. Over time, moisture will permeate through any seams, crevices, or pinholes that the furniture inevitably has. Rust seepage will occur from these areas due to the nature of metal furniture construction. This rust seepage, if left unattended, will eventually yield rust stains appearing on top of properly coated metal substrates. Continued neglect of these issues will result in rust penetration under the coating which will lead to coating failures. The duration of time it takes for these issues to develop is dependent upon the environment which the furniture is subjected. To avoid this problem, we strongly recommend proper care and maintenance as such as washing & waxing several times a year. In fact, as stated in our warranty package, the first waxing should be performed in the first 30 days to greatly inhibit the rusting process. Unfortunately, all metal inherently rusts. But there are ways to slow it down. Specific to your situation, the rust seepage has been cleaned away first. Then the wax should be applied to trap the seepage in and keep the moisture from further exposure. I am very sorry that you felt that you were lied to. We do our best to write and deliver warranty documents that clearly define the limitations of our work. As with all outside products, there will need to be some additional care given to elongate their life due to the harsh weather conditions of South Texas. Please see the part of the Maintenance Instructions for metal care. Excerpt from our Maintenance Instructions… “To perform this process, a clear automobile wax (Liquid Spray Wax – No Streak Formula) should be liberally applied to the frame giving particular attention to all joints and crevices. The wax should be removed following the wax manufacturer’s instructions. Frames should be routinely washed with a mild solution of clear, chlorine-free, laundry detergent and warm water. For steel and wrought iron furniture, Allied recommends waxing the furniture per the instructions above following every cleaning. If rust spots appear due to chips or scratches, use fine grade sandpaper to clean and then lightly touch up the area with a matching rust resistant paint. Periodically replacing any worn plastic feet inserts will also help prevent rust stains on your patio surface….”

Our aluminum patio furntiure was 8 years old and the paint was flaking off most of the pieces. I called Allied to come out for an estimate and they showed up that day and provided the estimate for free. We were happy with the estimate and they picked up the furniture on Feb 4. The furniture was delivered back to my home today (so a quick 2 week turn-around) and it is gorgeous. From the initial call to the estimation to the final product, dealing with Allied was very painless with an amazing result.

From my first contact with Allied Powder Coating everyone has been polite, professional and answered all my questions. I really hesitated to have the wrought iron table and chairs powder coated because of the price, but when I checked to see what a new set would cost I felt that it was worth the expense. My furniture was picked up and delivered in a timely manner, and it looks beautiful. They left instructions for maintenance, so I'm hoping that with regular maintenance I won't have to have the furniture powder coated again for several years. I noted on their website that they offer a cleaning and maintenance service, so will probably try that to keep the furniture in good condition. I would definitely recommend this company to my friends.

Dear [member name removed], Thank you so much for your kind words. We strive to focus on customer service. On a separate note, you will soon realize that cleaning and waxing the furniture is not that timely. As mentioned in the instructions, be sure to give a little extra wax to the joints of the furniture as that this where moisture accumulates. Please let us know if you have any questions or need any advice about your outdoor set. Once again, thank you for sharing your experience.

I had a set of wrought irone patio furniture that was over 20 years old that needed powder coating. The company responded to my request of a quote within the week by sending one of their representatives to look at the furniture. The furniture was picked by and returned to me earlier than expected looking fantastic. I almost didn't recognize it!! I was very pleased with the service and quality of this company. Please see story above.
Description of Work: I purchased about 10 vintage outdoor metal chairs from an antique dealer who uses and recommends Allied Powder Coating to redo his and his customers vintage garden chairs. I agreed to use and pay for APC to strip and repair - where necessary - and then to powder coat the chairs - some of which would be kept completely outside and uncovered and some of which would be kept under a roofed outdoor patio. APC stripped and repaired and then powder coated the 10 vintage metal outdoor chairs. I called and talked to the APC representative and I was told that the APC powder coating was much better than painting the chairs and that the powder coating would last for many many years and protect the chairs from rusting and from the weather - even if the chairs were left out in the open and were uncovered. While all the powder coated chairs looked very good at first, after just a couple of years the chairs left out in the open are literally rusting through at every joint and screw hole and several have had to be thrown away because they are now just too dangerous to even sit in. And the chairs kept under a completely roofed patio - but open on the sides - have lasted a little longer, but they too are rusting through at the joints and screw holes and will soon have to be replaced. Quite simply - APC tells you that their service and product will last for many years BUT their powder coating only last for a couple of years at best. I will NEVER use them again as their product and their service and claims are just not what they claim and of course you don't find out that their powder coating doesn't live up to their false claims until a couple of years after you have paid for their rather expensive service. APC charges top rate fees for their service, BUT - in my opinion - their product and service is poor at best and is certainly NOT WORTH the money they charge for their service.

I called Allied Powder Coating in mid April to have my patio furniture refinished. They told me that they would be in the neighborhood that Thursday, and could pick it up then. The price quoted was $1080, plus $65 for pick-up and delivery. They said that the job would take about three weeks. I agreed to these terms. Initial pick-up was April 16th, with delivery to be May 7th per their work order. On May 13th, I called to find out when my furniture would be delivered. I was told that there was a problem, that they didn't have enough fabric to cover the chairs, and that they were waiting to receive it. On May 21st we received 4 of the 6 chairs and the chaise. They had broken the glass on the table, and had to order a new piece, so delivery of that was to be the following week, along with the two remaining chairs. On May 29th I was told that delivery would be the next week, now 7 weeks from the pick-up date. On June 4th I finally received the remaining furniture. Unfortunately, the quality of workmanship on our furniture was not what I was expecting at all. All of the pieces had rough spots on them where they appeared to not have been sand-blasted. One of the arms of a chair had a completely different finish than the others. The sewing of the slings was done poorly, and they were put on the frames crookedly. The paint had an "alligator" appearance on some of the pieces. The table appeared to have had a crow bar used to remove the glass (reason it broke?). The rubber gasket around the table had a "bulge" in it (which was never fixed, even after sending it back twice). Four of the six chairs tilted back so far that you felt as if you would fall over backward. I contacted them about the problems, and they pick-up the furniture on June 11th, and was told that the furniture would be fixed and delivered back to me on June 18th. I sent notes on each piece of furniture with the specific problems of each. On July 2nd I received back my chairs, no table. I was told that the paint needed more drying time. When I reminded them that they had had the table now for three weeks, I asked how long paint needs to dry. Apparently it takes three weeks, for on July 16th I received the table, which I sent right back because of the bulge in the gasket which I was requesting to be fixed. The tilt in the chairs was fixed, but nothing else. Two of the chairs had the tilt overcompensated to where they tilted forward. A foot on the chaise and an endcap to an arm of a chair were now missing. On August 6th I received the table, with the bulge still there. At this point I gave up trying to have that problem fixed. Ironically, the day before I had received a bill for the full amount, which I had already negotiated to be a lesser amount because of the extreme delays. I called and spoke to the manager of the company, and we agreed to a $150 reduction in cost, plus the delivery charge would be waived.

The paint job and slings looks fine but the plastic "feet" on the table were removed and not replaced, making it wobble. A call to the company about this was responded to by telling me to take a picture of the table legs and email it to them so they know what the right part to replace it with - too much trouble for me and what I consider bad service. Pickup and delivery of the furniture was inconvenient since they only go to most areas of town only once per week and the day for my area was not convenient for me.
