Abacus Plumbing, Air Conditioning and Electrical

They made and confirmed an appointment with me to make a plumbing repair following the winter storm. The water in my home is turned off. They made and confirmed an appointment with us for Saturday between 9 and 6. They did not come and contacted us late in the day to say they wouldn’t be able to come out until “hopefully the end of NEXT week.” Subsequently, after I complained, they said my appointment would be sometime in early March. I understand they are busy due to damage from the freeze; my complaint is that they made and confirmed an appointment that they had absolutely no intention to keep since they are so behind that they cannot possible come to my home for another two weeks. If they did not have available appointments, they should not have made and confirmed one with me. Knowing the demand for plumbers, we cancelled other appointments because we thought we could rely on the confirmed appointment from a company like Abacus. Despite all of their marketing, they clearly cannot be counted on. Do not use this company.

Abacus charged me their standard 49.95 to show up and diagnose a situation, (opinion) then went about taking advantage of my wife with gross upsells. We need 2x toilet main shutoff valves, 2x float kits, and a 1x new sink disposal. Total quoted for the work is 2063.35. Assuming ~300 for the parts, that leaves 1863 for labor. At a generous 150/hr labor, that pricing implies 13 hours of work, meaning that instead of knocking out some fixes in 2-4 hours, dude might camp at our house for 2 full days. Doesn't make any sense to me, since I can very likely do the work myself in less time at a lower rate. There are various less costly solutions to the problems, starting with simple toilet float replacements instead of full tank remove & rebuilds, or a 1/2 HP industrial disposal vs top line 3/4 all stainless model. I wasn't there to guide the discussion and the Abacus fellow took advantage by offering only the most expensive solutions. Adding insult to injury, we were subjected to multiple upsells of the Abacus Club at 126 per year along with separate pricing structures for theoretic savings to our work once we join the Abacus Club. I called Abacus to discuss. Their approach is that they have a price model based on standard pricing for specific jobs, meaning that (in theory) all toilet shutoff valve replacements are charged the same. That approach actually makes a lot of sense and is probably intended to avoid situations like mine, where the Technician tries to take advantage of folks in hard plumbing situations. So, the overall problem from my side is that Abacus' price model is absurd, and the warranty plan upsell is pushed like spoiled potato salad at a family picnic. I've been very happy with Abacus in the past, both price and quality of work, but this experience and lack of solution (after talking with Abacus) really sours the experience, since there are two back-to-back failures: First the oversell and second the inability of Abacus to cure the situation.

Great experience! The company personnel are friendly and helpful. I hired an electrician to fix a porch light, they scheduled an appointment for the following day, and the electrician was right on time and very courteous. Highly recommend!

We contacted Abacus regarding a frozen whole house water shutoff valve. The faucet/valve was originally installed in 1980, and we believed that the whole unit needed to be replaced. The plumber, Jason Wells, arrived exactly on time. Jason cut the old unit out and installed a new valve and faucet. It was a fairly complex job and involved draining the entire water line, as well as some rather precision cutting, fitting, and soldering. Jason had all the parts in his truck, and before long completed the job. He even insulated and taped the new pipe as it was outside and subject to freezing. This was a job well done by a skilled plumber. After a bad experience with the dishonest John Moore Plumbing company, and then having to deal with the totally incompetent Milton Frank Plumbing company, it was refreshing to deal with an honest and professional plumbing company like Abacus. We highly recommend Abacus, and we will definitely be using them again.

Service was ok. We were told a 1 year service contract (which cost $99) would help save money on the service. A few weeks ago we received a call saying “hurry and use our electrical service again before your contract expires”. We didn’t, wanting the contract to expire. Now we’ve been charged $99 again for another year of service prescription! What?? Why tell us “hurry, your prescription is about to expire” then charge us for another year. Stay away.

I scheduled these guys for both a plumbing job and a possible AC/Furnace replacement. The plumbing guy was TERRIFIC!! The AC guy showed up talking bad about his last customer. He was so frustrated that I felt sorry for him. He quoted me about $12,000 for a new AC and Furnace. He said that they were definitely shot and needed to be replaced. He also told me that my broken AC unit was worthless because it was now illegal to refill them with the type of coolant they now used. When I told him that I'd like to get another quote, he walked off while I was talking to him. I thought it was my imagination so I followed him to his truck but he didn't have anything else to say. With no goodbyes he drove away. I then called a Christian friend of mine from another city. He actually told me over the phone that I would not have to replace the unit based on the symptoms I related to him. He came over and fixed my AC with a $20 part he had in his truck. He told me that the chances of an AC unit and Furnace going out AT THE SAME TIME was almost unheard of. He also informed me that this business is full of liars and con-men. The only thing I'm sorry about now, is that I paid a service fee for the first guy coming over and that I ever felt sorry for him because another customer saw the con-man he really was. A $20 part folks versus $12,000. When I asked why they were so high, he actually told me that it was their great warranty on their work. He knew he was busted as soon as I told him I wanted other quotes.

it went wrong ,misleading tech sold me into a new system incluiding ducts and brand new units and when i comeback from work they put wrong unit and use my old ducts !!!!!

They are reliable. They do excellent work. Its worth paying a higher price to get good work.

They proceeded, without my authorization, to withdraw the check I paid the diagnostic fee with as an ACH. The invoice they sent (after I gave them the check) implied that future membership payments might be made against the checking account. I did not authorize any of this, and did not sign anything authorizing membership.

My mother noticed a leak at the top of her HWH. She called Abacus and they wanted $1,100. She called a plumber who doesn't over-charge, and they completed the needed repairs, for less than $250.

Alfredo showed up on time and gave several options with pricing for each project. I decided the option I wanted and he completed the job right then. They have stocked vans so you do not have to wait for an appointment to install.

I have no problem with the quality of work or the responsiveness of the company. The installer was really great, HOWEVER, the price was ridiculous! I thought the original price for the whole project was steep, however when I asked the installer to quote me on adding an outlet to his existing wiring in the same location he quoted me an additional $500...for an outlet. Granted he was not the one setting the price...it was Abacus. I just cannot recommend this company due to their ridiculous pricing.

I had requested quotes from 3 different companies for the same scope. I chose Abacus because they found out that my evaporator coil was under warranty (the other 2 could not get that information from Trane). They came and did the work professionally.

Yesterday, I had a repairman out from Abacus Electric recommended on Angie’s List, because we had blown a 30-amp circuit breaker for the oven. Response was reasonably quick, and even though the man went to work without a mask, I didn’t object because he never came inside. All of his work was done outside. Abacus did not send me an estimate as promised, and I made the mistake of not clearing with him cost, because the job was so simple, I didn’t believe it could cost that much. It took him about 20 minutes or less to complete the job, and he replaced not just the 30 amp, but one twin pole 20-amp breaker because the old breakers were tied. The total charge for that was nearly $ 500, for 20 minutes work. Each breaker was $ 246. These same breakers including same brand, sell for between $ 20-40 in Home Depot. So, they marked up the price a minimum of $200 each, a percentage increase of between 500 and 1100%. Interestingly there was no charge for labor on the invoice or tax included. Most people would refer to the mark up for parts though, as wildly excessive. The repairman left without giving me a receipt, so I had to call their office and ask for one. I was never advised how long their guarantee was. I cannot recommend this vendor due to excessive unreasonable cost, and urge the board at Angie’s List to monitor much more closely their charges and activities. I am also asking for a partial refund for excessive charges for parts. The two parts should have cost about $ 60 total, and a reasonable charge for labor might be about $ 150. A refund in the neighborhood of $ 250 would seem to be quite reasonable. Not only was the price for their services in the stratosphere, I realized later that the electrician had actually double charged for services. Only one breaker needed to be replaced. It had four circuits on it, two 30 amp and two 20 amp. Because the contractor did not have that style on his truck he replaced the one breaker with two. But the two 20 amp breakers already there were functioning fine. In effect he replaced breakers that were working, unnecessarily. Robert L. Fischer

They were prompt, got the needed part and did the work in a reasonable amount of time.

Never happened. I had a condominium that needed the HVAC inspected. On the day of the appointment, just before the actual inspection I got a call from the manager that I was misinformed by the staff when making an appointment that they service condominiums when they actually don't. A lot of valuable time and effort was wasted especially because we were in the option period in the process of buying the property. In fact when I made the appointment I was specifically asked whether this was a condominium and if it had its own independent HVAC then it was fine.

We had a kitchen faucet break and become inoperable. I called Abacus at 7:30am and they had someone at my house at 9am. From Tonesha (scheduler) who took my call and was extremely kind and professional, to Kevin Nunez (master plumber) who replaced our kitchen faucet, I was extremely impressed by Abacus. Kevin was very kind and a plumbing expert. We have a super deep sink and getting to the valves and connections is really challenging. Kevin found work-arounds and didn't give up easily. I was also impressed with how neat he left the work space. I would recommend Abacus (and Kevin Nunez) to anyone who doesn't mind paying a little more (not much more) for quality work and service.

I was charged $700 for a part that only cost $130. Abacus is taking total advantage of the covid-19 pandemic and overcharging customers

Fine - I had to replace a solenoid sensor . I did that myself after I got the part from Delta Faucet
