My wife called and we suspected what was wrong with out condenser and even offered to provide the part numbers on the phone to ensure they had it in their truck before coming and request a price. The woman on the phone said she didn't want the part number and didn't have a price list for the parts. Service rep arrived timely and polite but never gave us a quote before doing the work. All we knew was the $82.50 call out fee. We were then amazed by the $700+ invoice we were presented with. I knew the parts cost for the switch and capacitor as I had researched them online and they were roughly $35 for both. They were charging $542 for the equivalent parts when you strip out the labor cost on their invoice!!! Needless to say I asked the service rep to remove the components and paid the labor grudgingly. I asked to speak to his Manager who was no help at all and said she didn't have any control over the pricing. I asked to speak to her Manager or the General Manager or anyone who did have some authority but she was unwilling to put me through or provide me a number to call. I left my cell with the service rep as she instructed for the Manager to call me and its been a week and no response. Some of the worst service I've ever had but more importantly they're ripping people off who don't know any better by having over 1000% markup on parts!!! Never again.

A great service company! Very prompt to respond and schedule a diagnostic service call. Mark Y was very helpful in talking over the information received from other service providers who just wanted to replace the system. Willie M was the tech who came out and he thoroughly checked the system and came up with a very different -- and much less expensive -- solution! Willie was very professional and a pleasure to deal with. Would not hesitate to recommend to family and friends!

Excellent. Frank Burrier evaluates your home, current needs, and checks out the electrical box. He tells you which unit/seer is best for you and gives you the estimate. He watches over the process and gets things done. He doesn't leave anything out. Anything that might require another trip out to make it perfect is covered by Willie and he will come out and make sure everything is completed to your satisfaction. I'll never use anyone else. You don't have to beg them to show back up to finish anything after you have already paid. Professionals.
Description of Work: They had replaced the AC unit in 2003. They are an authorized American Standard dealer, which is what I use. This time they replaced an entire HVAC system and ran another air vent/grill to the master so I would have 2 vents blowing cold air into the master bedroom. They also replaced all the grills over the air vents. I have 1800 sq ft.

I asked for the box from the capacitor they replaced. I was charged $254.00 for the capacitor which I found on Amazom for $16.99. (list price is approximately $21) I have used AJ Warren Service Co for over 15 years so I called them thinking it was a mistake. Jerry Warren told me I was charged $254.00 because they carry it on the truck and do not have to take the time to go buy it. Well, guess what, AJ Warren installed the system, as well as the downstairs system. They should carry common replacement parts for the units they sell. A markup of 15 times is exorbitant. I was advised that the 7/8" suction line was leaking and they recommended it be replaced, so they charged me for 4 pounds of freon. They recommended I replace the 7/8 suction line at an additional cost of $882.00. I got a second opinion from another company that showed me the 7/8" suction line is not leaking, which means I probably did not need freon when the capacitor was replaced. Bottom line, I was overcharged $230 for a capacitor, plus $364 for freon which I probably did not need, and asked to schedule another $882.00 of work for a suction line that is not leaking.
Description of Work: The upstairs air conditioner was not cooling. AJ Warren told me that the fan on the outside unit wasn't working because the motor run capacitor needed to be replaced.

We paid ~$200 for an inspection of a unit on a house we were buying. We were told verbally, though not in writing, that the units did not NEED to be replaced. They later gave us a quote on replacing one unit, but this came in an email after we requested it. They said some maintenance needed to be done on one unit for around $800.00. Once we moved in it was quite clear the system was not keeping up with the heat. So we called to have the maintenance work completed, and now the units still do not cool the house. We are uncertain if it is the system itself, incompetent work, or just a difficult house to keep cool. However, when you ask an expert what NEEDS to be done and specifically state, as I did, that we need this thing running well--I expect to either be told that the system needs replacing, which he did make clear, or that it can be fixed. Communication was not very clear at all since the written quote was difficult to read and his verbal explanation did not cover what I needed to know. What the written quote said was "advise owner to prepair to update the 2003 modle system". Then what he said on the phone was that it did not NEED to be replaced because it is working. Indeed both units "run" so technically I guess that's what he meant. But they aren't cooling very well and they never shut off. Neither unit (upstairs nor downstairs) can bring the house to the desired temperature. Set it for 74 and it will only get down to 78/79, even hours later. Some parts of the house cool fine, other areas are 80-85 even at night. Fact of the matter is, we gave this company ~$1000 for a net result of an AC that still doesn't cool the house any better than when we bought it. When we asked about replacing the system we were provided a quote for ~$8000.00 for a 13 SEER system and all it's components and installation. Here's the weird part: Upstairs unit currently cools better than the downstairs unit but when they sent us the quote for replacing one, they specified the upstairs system?? I looked up each part individually (because Frank graciously included it in the email) and it seemed like a fair price for the components and installation AT FIRST. BUT THEN we found the same deal for a 13 SEER system including all 3 parts and installation on an Angie's List special for $3920.00! A $4000.00 difference seems high for the same type of system! We may just replace both units for the same price they quoted us for one. Positives: They were communicative and courteous on the phone. They did the work they were asked to do at the price they quoted us. They showed up exactly when they said they would both times. Negatives: Net result is we gave this company $1000.00, we still have crappy AC, and what APPEARS to be an overpriced quote for a new system. Unclear communication. If they had said to us at the get-go "Look your system is old and will never work well" we would have just had it replaced. Now we have to replace a unit that just had $800 worth of work done to it and another week of sweating in our bedroom at night.
Description of Work: Inspection and quote. Replaced drain pan, put in a "T-line" (aka bleach line), safety switch, clear drain, ball valve.

Hit me with a $235. bill to look at the unit and say "its frozen" duh. This was $135. over a regular service call? Anyone could look at a frozen A/C and see its frozen. The tech said they would come back. No confirmation on this, blew my top when he wanted me to pay a double a service call bill for putting a keen eye to the A/C. Called the office to tell them, "Barbara" told me I could talk with a manager, told her that they have my number and could call me and let me know. Not been called back By the way, the tech came the day after they said they would come out. Which was fine, but double charging for absolutely no work and "looking" at it for 15 minutes .....
Description of Work: My air conditioner has frozen, which I knew, the tech told me and confirmed. Told me it would need to defrost and he would be back. Spent 15 minutes here. Service call was not completed. Never checked anything else, the filter? why?

This person was rude to my dispatcher when she called in for service. When she was asked what the problem was she said it was hot. She did not tell us that the system was frozen up. when our tech was there she was rude with him as well. She told him that she already new the system was frozen up and had a refrigerant leak. Had she given the dispatcher this information, we would have told her to turn the system off but to leave the fan on to melt the ice so that the system could be properly diagnosed and refrigerant added. When a system is a block of ice all we can do is let the ice melt and then come back to do what is needed. I called this customer she was also rude to me. She said that she knew the system was frozen up and that she knew that it had to be defrosted before it could be worked on. She did not tell us when she first called that it was a commercial job with the unit on the roof. All we charged the customer is $85 plus tax. When she asked us how much we would charge to add refrigerant, we respectfully decline doing business with her.

A family member's transition (an empty box) needed repair. The only question was if it could be repaired (150), or replaced (350). What does Frank @ AJ say? They will not perform the repair without us spending $5000 for them to redo the ductwork and cut in an additional filter into the return. The ductwork was fine, and the house had low electricity bills and was heated and cooled just fine. I guess AJ is wanting to get out of the service business and into only doing expensive installs. Two long term customers lost, so buyer beware.
Description of Work: After servicing my house for YEARS, AJ Warren spun out of control by trying to tell us a $5000 upgrade was required on top of a $350 repair.

On Saturday while I was cleaning the sump pump I forget to trip the circuit breaker. So when I accidentally touched one of the wires to ground I 'fried' the circuit board. Over the phone they talked me thru troubleshooting to determine if was merely the on-board fuse or the relay. It was NOT the fuse. They came out one (1) hour later and bypassed the relay so we would have AC for the weekend. They didn't charge me for this service call to bypass the relay. They came out Monday afternoon with a new circuit board. While he was at it, I had him checkout the rest of the HVAC. They were very professional and did not try to sell me stuff I did not want nor need. Having an electrical background I was able to discern these guys know their business and don't play games as others I have had the sorry pleasure of knowing. It was because of their manner and attitude that I had them checkout the rest of the HVAC.

They know exactly what they are doing. They made sure they are no hot or cold spots in the house. It is always comfortable. They are really sharp about getting the systems right and working correctly in the house. A trusted friend recommended them.

It's a big company. My experience was perfect. They were honest before I've got some other repairs that all came in ridiculously high. that they were gonna replace the whole thing and A J Warren Service Co think that I actually don't need to replace it. They told me that my Freon leaks out and they are really testing it. It's an older unit but it still going strong now. I didn't have to spend 2000$ so I appreciated that. They didn't insist that I really needed a new system. The service was very good and the service man, Tyler, he was excellent.

Annual heater inspection is included in price and will be performed in fall. |The tech did a great job. He caught a couple problems (loose wiring and the leaking component) that could have caused serious damage to the system, which is important as I have a 23-year-old air conditioner. He showed me the leak in the component. He was friendly and could explain the technical aspects as well. He understood the goal of the visit, which was to perform maintenance on my air conditioner and not to sell me a new system.
Description of Work: Performed annual inspection of air conditioning system, including freon pressure, check for leaks, clear overflow drain, clean system, bundle up loose wires, etc. Replace the electric component that starts the compressor as it had started to leak.

Response from A J Warren Service Co
We did a little over $11,000 worth of work for this customer. There were three minor problems that we gladly took care of at no charge to him. Then a hard wired surge protector that we had installed on the new furnace self sacrificed saving the electronics on the equipment. This is what the surge protector is designed to do. Since this happened in the first year we replaced the surge protector at no charge to the customer even though we had no fault in this matter. Then we were called out for a no cool issue again. We found that the 3 phase outdoor unit was not getting proper voltage. We found and showed the customer were the CenterPoint breaker was open on the power pole. We checked everything out on the system and found one bad fuse. We replaced the bad fuse and told the customer to call CenterPoint Energy to get the power restored. We charged an $85 diagnostic fee and $98 to replace the fuse. We were at the customers house for a little under an hour. Most companies would have found the lack of power and left while charging a diagnostic service call. Then the customer would call an electrician and end up paying much more. Our charge of $183 for this service call is very competitive in today's Houston market. We are always here ready to help this customer and all our customers to best of our abilities. We had quoted the price before we did the work. We had authorization and performed the repair. Then the customer called complaining about the price after the fact. I reviewed everything and found no errors. I told the customer that our technician had done what was correct and according to our pricing policy. I am sorry this customer thinks we charged too much. The cost of running our business has been facing double digit inflation for about five years straight. Our labor costs have risen about 30% over the last 18 months. I truly wish we could charge less but we must cover our costs and make a fair profit if we are going to stay in business to be here to help our customers.

I have been very happy with this company in the past. They replaced my door many years ago and have made several service calls for me. This time I called them out because my garage door would sometimes reverse and go back up and not go down completely unless I pulled on it. My brother in law oiled the train and it seemed to do better. Still don't know why on occasion it decides to reverse and go back up or why it started doing it...don't know how the panel got bent to begin with.

They were late to the appointment (but in all fairness, it was a same day appointment). The representative was nice and said that he needed a specific part in order to repair my AC. The rep mentioned that the AC needed oil. He set an appointment to return the next day with the part. After he left, my husband oiled the AC and it started to work and we have have no problems since with it. He called the following morning to cancel the repair appointment. They then sent a bill for the consultation because we did not use them to repair the AC.

As an attorney of over 15 years, truth and candor are very important to me. I often spend the time to write positive reviews and really dislike having to write a poor one such as this. However, I feel it is very important to warn fellow Houstonians about the price gouging practices of the owners Dwayne Ehlert and A.J. Warren, III. Don't believe all the company's "window dressing," such as the owners' videos about how much they care about the customer, because if you dare question outrageous charges that were not discussed in advance, AJ Warren will leave you in a lurch after performing less than proper work. While I did find one of the company's experienced technicians, Willie, to be the consummate and knowledgeable professional, everything else about this business is outright dismal. AJ Warren had serviced both of my residential air conditioning units a number of times before I contacted them to address a "gushing" sound coming from my vents that sounded like a windstorm inside my house. The first technician, as nice as he was, was unknowledgeable of my system and believed it was one called an "iQ Drive" model that constantly changes speed. He left my home with a small service call charge not having corrected anything. My system then completely failed and I went to the attic to find that parts of my system from the technician's visit had not been replaced, including important protective covers for the circuit boards, and that the emergency shutoff sensor that prevents the system from running with the cover off was "taped off" so that it would run in the technician's presence even without the cover. AJ Warren then sent Willie, who had performed previous service at my home, and who immediately identified that the system was indeed failing by making the "gushing" noise because the motor was racing up and down in speed and also that the system was NOT the "iQ Drive" model his colleague misunderstood it to be. Willie advised that parts would be ordered under warranty and the system repaired. To my dismay, when I called my wife after the parts arrived and Willie performed the repair, AJ Warren charged $450 for what was less than one hour of labor. I then called the company and spoke with the owner, Dwayne Ehlert. After I explained the prior course of dealing (including the mistake the first technician had made and the poor condition in which the unit was left) and requested an explanation as to how the charge was $450 since the parts were under warranty, Mr. Ehlert tersely responded, "How about I don't charge you and don't do business with you any longer." Unbelievably, Mr. Ehlert then told me that I should expect a lot more repair bills for my Maytag unit because it has one of the poorest reliability ratings in the industry. What's so unbelievable about that? AJ Warren showcases the Maytag system as one of their best selling products on their website! However, this behavior comports with what is a clear company effort to maximize dollars with inexplicably high hourly rates that well exceed even those charged by highly educated professionals such as physicians and attorneys. Again, this is a company to stay away from and one that believes IT IS THE CUSTOMER'S PRIVILEGE to do business with them and not the other way around. I know you will see a number of positive reviews, but companies change over time and this is one that has placed the dollar well ahead of caring about the customer. STAY AWAY. I think it is very important to respond to the owner's comment below. I did not refuse to pay for the services provided and rather simply inquired how 45 minutes of work could cost $450 when the parts were supposedly under warranty and at no charge. Imagine if every business you worked with simply told you that they "were done" with you as a customer because you made an inquiry about a charge you believed to be excessive. The owner claims in his response that their pricing is necessary to "cover costs and make a fair profit." Anglie's List members, please consider whether $450 for 45 minutes work is appropriate in relation to that comment. I have never, in my life, heard of such an outrageous charge and I remain shocked that this owner dismissed me and left me looking for a new contractor simply because I dared to question the charge. It was NOT approved beforehand; that is an outright misrepresentation. Further illustrating the problem here, the owner's response indicates that the company performed work on my system seven prior times. Not only is this completely incorrect since my home is serviced by two completely separate systems and their work was performed on both at different times, but in fact the last two services appointments were occasioned by the DEFECTIVE work performed by the younger technician I described above who incorrectly identified my system as a type it was not, charging me before leaving for the defective work and then requiring follow-up service with the senior technician who knew the product and immediately identified the other technician's errors. Again, question: 1) whether $450 for 45 minutes of work is appropriate for a heating and air conditioning company; 2) whether it is appropriate for a company that purports to have a "100 percent satisfaction guarantee" SHOULD choose to tell a customer it won't do business with him or her simply because the customer questions the propriety of such a charge; and 3) whether just because the company has a good past rating means it is not changing for the worse with a focus on the almighty dollar over customer service. The owner's response "wishing me luck finding a new contractor" is representative of the truth here. AJ Warren left me in a lurch and the owner is proud of it. Finally, do you find it as interesting as I do that it was my review noting that the company heavily advertises a product they claim is unreliable that finally caused the company to take that advertising down?

Response from A J Warren Service Co
I do not understand why Mr [member name removed] is upset with us. We have worked on the Maytag system at his house 7 times in 3 months, thus our comments about the lack of dependability of Maytag AC and heating products. We started selling Maytag when they came out with their iQ-Drive inverter driven system. It was the best technology on the market. It took about 4 years to determine that they were not dependable enough to continue selling to our customers. Maytag is no longer on our webpage. Mr. [member name removed] called me about the price of the repair he needed. I checked the price and found that it was correct. Mr. [member name removed] continued to insist that the price be lowered. This is after the price was approved and the work was completed. I decided since Mr. [member name removed] was trying to tell us how to price our work after the fact that we would refund him all of the money and respectfully decline continuing to work for him. I agree that costs to have AC and heating systems repaired has gotten expensive. Unfortunately we have to charge enough to cover our costs and make a fair profit. We have one of the best reputations anywhere. We won the Angie's List Super Service Award last December. It is our right to choose our customers as much as it is his right to choose a contractor. We work hard to be the best AC service company around. It is impossible to be the best and the cheapest. We wish Mr [member name removed] luck at finding a company as good as A J Warren Service Company that will let him tell them how to price their work.

I came home from work to no a/c. I called AJ Warren around 4:30 and was told someone would be out that day. I was pleasantly surprised as it was a very hot week and I know the a/c companies were crazy busy. Andy showed up a few hours later, diagnosed the problem and cleaned my unit. He replaced the contractor with an ant proof one. He put on shoe covers before entering my house, explained everything he was doing to me, was polite and very pleasant. I had recommended AJ Warren to a friend who used them in 2011 and I had been sent a $75.00 off certificate. In 2013 the certificate was accepted which also surprised me. I would not hesitate to recommend AJ Warren Co.

The first time I called AJ Warren Co. I had ants in my contactors. The contactors were replaced promptly. I then signed up for their program to come to the house spring and fall to check my equipment and get it ready for the season. The servicemen are polite, on time, knowledgeable and do excellent work taking care to keep my house clean while going in and out. I am very pleased and will continue to do business with this company.
Description of Work: I honestly don't remember the details of exactly when or exactly what was done to my a/c or how much I spent but A J Warren Service Co. has come to my house several times and I have always been impressed by the honesty, promptness, and good nature of the servicemen. Having worked in the A/C business in the past I knew that A J Warren Co has been around for a long time and were honest and dependable. As long as they are in business I will never use another company. I also recommended this company to a friend who was also very impressed and called to thank me for the recommendation.
