STEVE'S NURSERY

As above, Steve's Nursery carries plants and trees suited to this area and usually good specimens. One of two roses I purchased , a Queen Elizabeth Climbing rose , was on old root stock to be more sturdy , but the graft cultivar died and only the old country climbing red rose root stock lived. It is nice in my country garden however. so I left it even though it has the large flush in the spring and then nothing much . The other Queen Elizabeth climbing rose has never bloomed but look healthy .. Steve's is not a discount plant place , but prices are fair for market , and really competitive with area nurseries. The staff I worked with was extremely knowledgeable , and helped me with a specific question about a plant species for a specific place , even though they did not have the plants available. They did tell me when to check back and I was very glad to have stopped in. Steve and His mother , who help him are not outgoing types of people and they could be misconstrued as a little unfriendly if you do not know that is just how they are , but they do know plants. Sometimes when dropping in to browse and look , I get the idea that they would rather not have to deal with people,but if you know what you are looking for or need an answer , they have it or will refer you to a book they either have or know about. The roses I bought there lived and the ones elsewhere did not , so after putting work and time in to a plant , one would rather have the plant than have to return it- so for the ones I bought , the lack of a guarantee was not an issue. I just wish the QE had persisted on the root stock ... and I have no recourse with them. Their other really strong suit is the organic amendment and fertilizer section . Howard Garrett recommends them. They do not have a guarantee policy like Lowe's or Wal mart , but normally you would be coming to Steves's for unique perennials, roses, and fruit trees, etc not the regular items. And the have quality plants. So , if you put the work in to plant them correctly , it is worth it to have a good plant , rather than a stressed one that hasn't been watered correctly or one with early disease from the larger stores He is the only full scale landscaper and quality xeroscape and perennial specimen nursery in the area and a lot of people use him, I don't know if that contributes to the somewhat flat personality . A great resource to have in this area.
