Was the first company I called so not good start.
Description of Work: He asked me 3 times if I said "plumbing" then said he doesn't do plumbing. I said he was on Angie's list for it to which he replied "I used to but not anymore".

I am sorry that I don't offer plumbing services. One of my past clients put rating accidently under the plumbing category. Thank you for bringing it to my attention. I have to contact Angies List to remove it. It was an automatic addition not something that I added or picked myself. Sorry for the mix up

It went great!!! Details listed above. Installed bathroom exhaust fan.
Description of Work: Michael called before he came, and arrived a few minutes prior to when he said he would be here. They answered all my questions, and options, Very professional. They installed an exhaust fan ( I purchased from Home Depot ) in my master bathroom, without a hitch, and in a timely manner. They also gave me some options on other remodel projects, that I asked them about. I highly recommend MED Handyman Services, and will be using them again, in the near future!!! A++++++++

The paint was dry in 2 hours and I replaced the blinds and furniture. No surprises and a full even coat of paint.
Description of Work: I needed my bedroom painted today. Michael had been busy nonstop on one huge job but he worked me in on this Saturday afternoon. I supplied the paint and he took his Saturday off to do an excellent job. This has to be my sixth job for Handyman Michael Douglas and he continues to have a full schedule. Friendly courteous and cheerful he cleans up his materials and asks me to go over his work to be sure that he has not missed anything. Try Handyman even if you have to wait for him to find a date for your work.

I agreed upon $5,000 for the service but I gave him $200.00 extra for his work. He did not fix the front door and when he placed down the laminate flooring he did not place the staircase nose or connect to the bathroom. There was some other issues but I do not want to make a deal out of that, I just want him to come out and finish what I originally hired him for. He told me he would come out in about a week to finish but now it is passed that time and he is not returning my phone calls. Update: Case is not resolved. Michael Douglas came back to see me. I thank him for that but he did not fix the front door ? the main issue. Other problems, the stair case nose and the floor transition that he attempted to fix came out lose after a few days. I even offered him to give another larger project if he had fix these small jobs but he did not do it to my satisfaction. He wanted me to remove Angie list complain without him fixing the problems.I will not re-hire a contractor like that nor would I recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: I need him to do some flooring, fix the front entrance door, some sheet rock work, along with some painting on the walls.

Door was working fine when I left the final time, as agreed by client. This was a labor bid with the client providing materials with the threshold not on site the last day. I offered to came back and install them when he had them but he verbally told me he could do it. The client paid extra for extra tile work that was not on the original bid. He would pull my guys off the agreed upon contract to do other projects without my permission or written agreement. I'm not sure what he wants me to do at this point.

awareness that the angles were not exactly at 45 degrees, or slight visual concerns about nail holes being filled and steel wool sanded so no evidence of nail holes existed. This was exemplary as with all my contacts with Michael and his crews. It did not matter if I bought the door and locks. Apparently several clients of Michael have given him their house keys as I offered mine. His integrity and pragmatic approach wins kuxdos and a respect for an old world craftsman. A grin and a wink emits from Michael as he teaches homeowners and his crew the correct way to do a job. In conclusion i would recommend Mr. Mike Douglas, the handyman, without reservations. He treats my 50 year old house as a valued asset and I consider him a good friend and teacher.
Description of Work: This should be the 5th. job that Michael aka "Handyman" has performed at my home. Michael arrived three days ago and gave a rough idea of what the job would entail. Various options were presented and I as usual got to pick the scope or extent of what I wished to accomplish. Yesterday he arrived with two helpers and supervised in minute detail what the job was and how to organize their time much like a project manager. The work consisted of removing an outside solid core door and replacing the hardware for the new solid core door. Step two was staining the door and putting a decorative crown molding pattern on both sides. Step 3 was staining an area under washer and dryer without getting stain on outlying dry wall. Step 4 included staining an inside door and frame. Step 5 taking an entire wall of grass cloth down and sanding and preparation for wall paper. Michael always carries off any debris as old door and cleans up before leaving The second day a sealant was applied to the stained area and wallpaper applied. Each day the crew arrived promptly, clean and with special equipment needed. One trip to get crown molding took about 20 minutes. Lunch hours were very short and more instructions about the afternoons work were given. If anything did not "plumb" or fit correctly it was redone. Most of the time I had no

I called a couple of handyman services from Angies list, and presented each with a list of repairs and jobs throughout the house for estimate. From the start, Michael really demonstrated knowledge and confidence that comes with years of experience in your trade. He provided a solid estimate, and as were were in a time crunch - also agreed to work on the weekend. Work was done correctly, and as estimated. I know several of those jobs took longer than planned, in particular the shower doors in our remodeled bathroom proved to be a challange - not only was I grateful I had not tried to install those myself, Michael did not charge me extra. He fixed a couple items that had us stumped and just proved himself to truly be a excellent handyman or jack of all trades. I recommend his work
Description of Work: I have used this company several times in the last month or so, they have replaced glass in an exterior door, repaired or installed trim and baseboards in several rooms, framed a few doors, repaired attic door, installed a number of ceiling fans, light fixtures, and smoke detectors. He also installed glass shower doors to help us finish a bathroom remodel. Currently they are working on some repairs to my deck to bring it to code compliance.

Everything went well from start to finish. Michael and his brother began the job on Monday, August 22nd and completed the job on Wednesday, August 24th on schedule. He was always on time, professional and cleaned up the work areas each day before leaving. Michael is a true professional and takes pride in his work.
Description of Work: Guest Bath Masked and covered floor, finished removing wallpaper backing, filled in all holes in walls, removed all base trim, installed new 3" base trim, textured walls to match texture in home, primed all walls, painted walls and trim work. Replaced toilet with new unit (provided by homeowner). Wet Bar Masked and covered wet bar, finished removing wallpaper backing, textured walls to match texture in home, primed and painted walls. Attic Staircases Removed two wooden ladder attic staircase units and hauled away same, installed two new, heavy-duty aluminum ladder attic staircases, removed old trim and installed new trim around one unit, painted doors and trim on both units. Miscellaneous Re-cut hole in front door and installed a new dead bolt lock. Repaired hole in sheetrock in garage wall and ceiling (no texture) Additionally, Michael made me aware of two water spots in my bathroom ceiling of which I was not aware. Thank you, Michael, for doing such a good job and for making me aware of a potential problem. You do excellent work!

I contacted Michael yesterday. He fit me in his busy schedule to look at what I thought, that some drywall needed to be replaced. Just purchased a house and have not moved in yet. Last week during a heavy rain, found water had seeped in and carpet was damp next to a wall. Michael just the drywall and said it was in very good shape and that I just needed to replace the baseboard that has areas that were rotten. He saved me anywhere from $1200-1500. I am very grateful that is was not needed to spend that money. I so appreciate him coming to look. He did not charge for the trip, which caused him time and gas money. I will certainly call Mike if I need any work done. He proved to be very honest.

Went pretty well. Door is not quite straight, however, but doesn't seem to cause too much of a problem, other than it looks odd when open. When closed, it's not noticeable. Also, they used some wood trim around the outside, and didn't paint it, so that was left for me to do. Also, the wood they used was very poor quality and has lots of splinters which I have to sand exensively.

Overall the project went well, he did everything we talked about and even did a couple of things I had originally told him not to worry about and we even added some things to the list. He was very responsible and showed up when he said he would. Easy to work with and was very helpful. If I had to say anything on the negative side it would be the clean up. There was still a lot of dust and texture stuff around in the living room but outside the house was cleaned up really well. I would definitely use him again in the future.
Description of Work: He repaired a living room ceiling that had cracks in the drywall and also repaired several cracks throughout the house in the walls and painted those same areas. Installed GFCI plugs throughout, did exterior work around windows and repairing squirrel damage around outside, installed a chimney cap and patched a concrete hole around the chimney, fixed some faucets and toilets, did some insulation in the attic, repaired outside door frames and installed some weather stripping, worked on some door hardware and some minor roof repairs.

Can't say as of today 1-14-2011 I have not heard any reply from him. Im sorry to say that this is a bad way to start. P.S. The following day after submitting this report ,Mr. Douglas contacted me apologizing an told me that he had been very busy. An to compensate for the mis-understanding he would offer to do the job for free as long as I purchased the materials. I informed him I did not do business under those terms therefore I declined the offer.

Michael and his crew did a great job on the work and went above and beyond in several areas, notably installing hinged/latched covers to our crawl space access (what we had was just a square cover that leaned over it, allowing animals to get under); getting new brass house numbers to replace the existing ones when some paint got on them; finding a small piece of wood to fill in the one tiny missing decorative square on our third-color paint that had been missing since we bought the house ten years ago. The work looks great. There were a few items on punch list (there always is on a large job, it just happens) which were all addressed promptly. All work was cleaned up at completion. We had some delays due to weather but the work went very well. We are repeat customers of MED Handyman and will be using them again in the future.
Description of Work: Quote / work was for complete repaint of two-story all-wood prairie house in Winnetka Heights historic district. Prior to paint, a lot of wood siding had to be replaced, and caulking done over the entire house. Exterior included building new screens, as well as painting the large stand-alone shed in matching colors.

I contacted Michael based upon the positive reviews which he had received on Angie's List. The contractor which had been referred to me by our electrician canceled his appointment with us three times before finally deciding that he was too busy with a large remodel to do the work needed at our house. This left us in a difficult situation as we needed to have the work completed within a short time frame. I contacted Michael on Tuesday, and he returned my call within 30 minutes. The next morning, Michael came out and gave us a good bid on the work and indicated he could meet our deadline. Michael began the job on Thursday morning and completed the job today (Saturday morning ... same week!) Let me assure you that Michael and his team are extremely good at their trade. They maintain and clean up their works areas prior to leaving the job site and conduct themselves in a very professional manner. My husband works in a service industry for high-scale retail clients., and he volunteered to serve as a reference for Michael, also. I just cannot say enough good things about Michael, Frank and Dave. They all did a wonderful job.

The project was a lifesaver for me. We were expecting the Container Store to be at our house in 48 hours to install new shelving and I was running behind in prepping the closet. I also would have done a woefully worse job than Michael. I called him on a Tuesday afternoon and he came the next morning. I made it clear that he had to be done by early afternoon so that I could prime and paint the closet that evening. Michael provided all the materials and laid down protective coverings on the surrounding area. Overall, I was very pleased with the responsiveness and the interaction with Michael during the process to ensure we were syncronized on the expected outcome and that he could make suggestions and modify or improve he project as needed.
Description of Work: Rehab'd a closet including patching extensive separation, holes and other damage in sheetrock. Also, reframed an area with missing and damaged 2x4s by the closet door. Then re-taped and bedded were needed to get the whole closet to a smooth and consistent finish. The entire closet was floated with new plaster, sanded, and refinished with final sand.

Michael and his crew did an outstanding job of removing over 1200 sq ft of popcorn ceiling to completion of the painting of the ceiling...installed/replaced lighting fixtures, re- textured an accent wall, and many odd jobs (too many to mention). Entire project took 4 1/2 days. Was on time daily and was impressed how they cleaned up at the end of the day. His estimate and how long it would take was spot on. Highly recommend this company, and ready to book them for my next project.

Michael confirmed our intitial appointment and was prompt. He provided a detailed bid with very affordable prices. He outlined his proposed schedule and was willing to work around our needs. He focussed completely on our job until it was done. He was personally here everyday working with his team and making sure everything was on track. When we ran into a snag and something was going to cost additional he quickly let me know and gave me several pricing options. He also has wonderful industry contacts that are very affordable (his carpet guy offered great pricing on high quality carpet & installation). Michael's work was high quality from the very beginning and all the way thru to the end. I'll always call Michael when I need any sort of home repair or improvement.
Description of Work: Michael and his team have completely updated my home at a very affordable price and most important -- their work is outstanding. They repaired my tile patio which had cracked/missing pieces and it now looks perfect. They installed wall panels in my living/dining/foyer that are amazing (his brother Franklin is truly an artist!). They are talented carpenters and did wonders removing a built in book shelf and patching the dry wall. On that same wall they added the electrical box and additional support to mount a flat screen T.V. They also installed pocket doors which hang perfectly straight. They added chair molding throughout the home and repainted all of my wood trim and door casings. They are very neat painters and painted almost all of my rooms as well as another large wood built in. Next they resurfaced my kitchen cabinets and hall cabinets which look really nice without spending a ton of money on new cabinets. They removed 2 of the cabinets and did a nice job patching/texturizing the dry wall. They also updated my baths by removing a shower door in one and replacing the vanity, sink and hardware in another. This update also included installing a fan vent. They installed recessed lighting throughout the house as well as a ceiling fan and 2 chandeliers. There were other misc. items too such as replacing vent covers, installing dimmer switches and other minior items. Michael and his team worked on each item until it was perfect.

I have used MED Handyman Services twice before and have written glowing reports because the service and jobs were excellent. But this time the job really went arwy and I could not get Mike to work out the issues with me in a professional manner. The job was to lay flagstone over existing concrete on to a 300 sq ft patio. I went to a wholesale rock company on Legacy and purchased the rock myself and had it delivered. Buying it wholesale it was over $1000.00. My neighbor across the creek had her landscaper buy it and they add a 50% to 100% markup. It's up to you to decide if you want to stand in the hot sun with sand blowing in your face picking out rock or have it nicely delivered. I'm on a budget. Mike and I had discussed 2 projects, a simple patio with just flagstone on it, or a patio with medallions/ a bench and a small wall. I showed him 2 pictures in a book. The more elaborate patio was $1000.00 more. I verbally said we were doing the simple patio. Mike and his crew started to work. The results were mixed. The patio came out very nice. Mike does nice work. However, his crew used my creek, which I own as a dumping ground. One part of it was covered in gray concrete. I asked him to clean it, because the neighbor/HOA complained but it was still dirty. Next, the surrounding landscaping took a serious beating. They did not cover the furniture, or plants and there was concrete everywhere. They used acid wash. I found an unused bottle of acid wash in my garden. That stuff is TOXIC! It was just sitting in my garden! I was cleaning for days. Some plants died. I was also cleaning up cigarette butts everywhere. Then they dumped the small remaining loose rock in a pile in the driveway, with cigarette butts and I had to clean that up too. When the project was done, Mike presenting me with a bill that was $1000 more than I thought it was going to be. In addition, he had been running to home depot buying some supplies I was not aware of adding to the total. I was kind of shocked but said we would work the misunderstanding out. We did not have a written contract to start which was clearly a mistake and were working to informally. I paid him every last bit of cash I had and was $400 short. I mean I was drained!! He left in a huff. I wrote an email letter to Mike to try and work things out. I got no response. He was suppose to email me a couple of proposals on a couple other projects and no response. My husband was a TAD upset over the pricing and how it was handled. I was really disappointed how this project went. ****** Response to MED's Handyman Service's Response: The bench and Mediallions weren't purchased because we were doing the simple patio. 1) Who does there patio in tile?? Really tile outside? Please. 2) You were to lazy to come out to the stone quarry with me, I was on the phone with you the whole time, telling you what I was picking out. 3) the mess..you covered nothing. I spent weeks cleaning up the mess, I hired a contractor to clean up the creek, and I still have concrete on my landscape lighting fixtures and concrete in my flower beds I couldn't get out. 4) The acid wash did not belong to me..why would I have acid wash? 5) When you left you knew we had issues to work out but you refused to talk on the phone or answer email. I paid you the extra money ($700) when I should not have. Now instead of working out the issue, your spending your time trying to get members to issue more reports. I have another report to write on the interior bedroom paint job due in Dec and we know how that one went. (the Ralph Lauren Paint) So you will get another report.

Response from MED HandyMan Services
The elaborate patio she is referring to was done to complete satisfaction. The bench and medallions referred to where not purchased by member. I verbally offered a $200.00 discount off of the $1800.00 quote. I have email correspondence stating the difference between a tile patio and a stone patio. The member was completely aware that a stone patio required at least 5 days and extra manpower. She chose to buy 3' x 4' x 1" thick stone that had to be hand broken. She also did not provide all the materials needed to complete the project. With the members permission I bought the additional materials needed ($354.37). She only provided enough to get started the total she paid for materials beside the stone was $141.52. You can see how that is not enough for a 312 sq. ft patio. Unfortunately, there will be some mess when breaking stone and using concrete. It rained during the project and went down the hill to the creek. We rinsed it out the next day. The acid wash belonged to the client. I was under the impression when I left the last time that it was all good and we would work out the monies owed. Was very surprised to receive a complaint. Terrific. This has been an eyesore we've lived with for awhile, fearing how much it would cost, and we were so pleased with the cost and the work quality. And we especially appreciated how well they cleaned up after their work. Michael was professional, showed up on time, and completed the job in terrific fashion.
Description of Work: Our kitchen has "half-bricks" mortared on three walls, and a really nice old backsplash of hand-painted tiles. Because of the poor initial installation of these, a number of bricks and tiles had fallen off the walls. Michael and his team cleaned up the old mortar from the tiles and bricks, properly attached a metal mesh mounting foundation to the wall and reattached and re-mortared the bricks and tiles.

It went very well. He came promptly to give an estimate, showed up quickly and as promised, and completed the work well. His prices were also MUCH lower than the other estimates that I received. Very polite and professional.
Description of Work: He repaired the damage to our kitchen ceiling from a roof vent leak, retextured and repainted. He also fixed a leak under the kitchen sink while he was here.

My son was refinishing all the cabinet doors in a small house and I was helping paint the walls. To sand the doors he laid them on the floor in one of the bedrooms, while I was painting in there I lost my balance and stepped backward right onto one of the large cabinet doors. Needless to say the side with the hinge split away from the main door piece. I called several companies and was told the repair job was too small for them to accept. Thankfully I found Mr. Douglas at MED Handymen Services and he readily agreed to accept the job and gave me a quote over the phone. He agreed to meet me within 15 minues of my call and said the door would be ready the next day. What a life saver! When he delivered the door there was no sign of the damage I had done - an excellent repair. I would definitely call upon Mr. Douglas again for future work and requested an additional business card to give to my son. My son purchased a small house to fix up as a rental and has already had to redo work he hired a contractor to do - wish we had know about Mr. Douglas before calling the contractor!
Description of Work: Kitchen cabinet door repair.
