The entire process went even better than I expected. Our entry was only tied up for one day and to my amazement the entire job finished in a day and a half! Clean up was exceptional and everything looks great!!! I will continue to use Alvarez Painting and am happy to highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Alvarez painting scraped ceilings of popcorn texture in our entry, two staircases, and hallway, applied mud, and painted. Also gave a son pointers on doing the same for other parts of our popcorn filled 1970's home.

Paul came up for the initial consultation (unbeknownst to us at the time, in the middle of a family tragedy). He was super professional, very helpful with his suggestions about what we should do, and very friendly. We got his quote via email that night, I believe. Paul's quote wasn't low, but given the reviews on AngiesList, we went with him anyway - we knew we had a tough job, and we really wanted it done right. This is a house we plan to live it for a very long time - we love it, and we wanted it taken care of. We made the right decision. Paul and his team (4 additional guys) came out exactly when we asked them to. We are having a lot of work done to the house before we move in, and we were trying to schedule the painting around some of the other work. Paul was very accommodating. The team started work on the following Monday morning. (I later found out, the day of his mom's funeral. Even in the middle of such a horrible personal time, Paul was absolutely professional and focussed on doing a great job for us.) At the same time that Paul's team was at the house, the A/C people were replacing the A/C system, wiring and ductwork throughout the entire house. (They were supposed to have finished by the time Paul's guys got started.) Well, four days later, Paul's guys have finished - but the A/C is still not working. That meant that Paul and his guys worked in my house, all week, for about 12 hours a day - WITH NO AIR CONDITIONING. It's the end of a Texas July - we're in the middle of a monthlong heat wave. (25+ days over 100 so far.) It was excruciatingly hot in that house - I have no idea how they managed. One day, it was 110 outside, and it was hotter in the house. But, not a single complaint from any of the guys - they were cheerful and professional, even really friendly every single day. And, they did a gorgeous job on the painting. (Paul even helped me with some of the communication with the A/C guys!) The prep they did to protect the house was amazing - everything was covered (usually with more than one layer of protection). The entire floor was covered with heavy paper, taped in neat columns, then covered with huge drop cloths and plastic. All the cupboards, windows, trim, baseboards and fireplace were also covered, as were all the ceiling fans. (Yes, that's right - they didn't even have ceiling fans to cool things off!!) The painting prep was equally as impressive. At one point, I told Paul it would have taken my husband and I years to do all the work they did. Finally, I actually changed my mind the night before they finished - I asked them to repaint all the doors and door frames a different color. Paul didn't bat an eye. I don't know how he managed to tell his guys that happy news, but they were just as wonderful the next day. They STILL finished right on time, and left everything spotlessly clean. Bottom line - I cannot say enough good things about Paul Alvarez and his entire crew. I hugged them all when they left (poor guys!!!) We would absolutely recommend them - in fact, I've already had him quote us for painting the exterior of the house, and the decks. We will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We recently bought a lake house - built in the 50's, with the original dark, knotty pine on every wall. I know it's a controversial decision, but it was just too much knotty pine for us - we needed some of it brighter and less... well, cabin-y. We wanted the entryway, living room, dining room, stairway and kitchen painted. That's a huge challenge: 60+ year old knotty pine drinks paint, seeps dark from the larger knots, not to mention the cracks and smaller knot holes.... And, wanted to preserve the vertical grooves between the panels, so a simple skim coat wouldn't do it. Oh, and we wanted the knotty pine ceiling done, too. We knew we needed a pro - so we checked Angie's list, and found Paul and his team. The pine required a TON of prep - sanding, filling, priming, more priming, painting. We also were a bit unsure about the trim wood - we didn't know for sure what we wanted to do with the window trim and the ceiling beams. So, we were also looking for a little advice on overall colors, as well as finishes, etc. Finally, the house is in a fairly remote location - we needed someone who was willing to travel some distance every day.

Paul Alvarez and his crew did a great job painting and repairing the wood on my home. First estimate was for power washing, painting exterior and patching a few holes in the wood. I decided I wanted more done; I asked him to come back out and look at other wood that needed replacing including the "hardie board"(?) on one entire side of the garage. He provided an updated estimate and was able to start the next day. Paul estimated 4 days to complete the job but was able to finish in 3 days. (Nice surprise!) I also asked him if he could cut off the exterior rafter-looking pieces of wood that were popular when my home was built in the 1960s and he did and then ecommended painting them as well so they more or less blend in with the home - and that made them no longer reflect that outdated style. The crew cleaned up the wood and insulation from the repairs as well as can be expected in grass and never left any trash (water bottles, food, wood, insulation) anywhere but in the trash can. Paul is very personable, helpful and easy to deal with; when it is time to have my interior rooms painted I'll be giving him another call!

The entire project went great. House was unoccupied for almost a year and it showed. Received three quotes and Paul was NOT the cheapest - but went with him anyway based on Angie List. It was the right move. The painting went fast, efficient and very professional. Paul and his crew know what they are doing and it shows. He recommended the amount and type of paint per the conditions of the home, estimated quantity and got to work right on time. The end result, beautiful. The floating wall at first seemed a simple one, a quick and easy floating wall with doors. However, due to the construction of the property, it was anything but. Paul must have spent at least a day and a half perfecting it - and this was a challenging build once engaged. He did a wonderful job - hard to tell it is new - almost perfectly (not his fault - it is impossible to make it perfect do to original design/construction issues). Came out WAY better than I thought it would. Installed three ceiling fans because Im too lazy. Cleanup was just ok. CONS The cleanup was not up to my expectation. One door was not perfect and required a come-back. OVERALL Wonderful. I have very little to complain about. Paul was prompt, receptive to mid-project scope creep (for a price of course), and he and his team are real pros. I have absolutely no qualms recommending him to others and I already plan on having him paint the exterior in the spring.

He did mention texture over spray on a window, I did come back 2 days later to clean because we were working 45 miles away and he beat me to it. I figured it wouldnt be a probleum because he was going to move in in several weeks, I do apologize for overlooking this.

I was in a pinch because I needed a room painted in a jiff because another painter had used an awful color. Paul came the next DAY, was punctual, flexible, and proficient. The room looks amazing. The only con is that he is pretty expensive; the price works out to about $100/hour. Still, you get what you pay for.
Description of Work: Painted a bedroom with cutout and high ceilings.
Do not let the name Alverez Painting fool you he does much more. He offered his advice and recommendations based on years of experience which made our decisions easier. He was alsways on time, he always closely supervised his crew and explained where we were on the job and what to expect next. I will use him again.
Description of Work: Paul and his team removed and replaced kitchen counter tops with Granite, refinished all kitchen cabinets and all hardware, removed and replaced all appliances running new wiring as needed, modified existing cabinets to our specifications, removed and replaced back splash, installed next under cabinet lighting, painted all effected areas. They also refinished existing bath tub and shower enclosure, retiled the shower area and replaced and retiled the bathroom.

Our house was burglarized and the front door was pried open, ripping out part of the door frame and cracking the old front door. We used a separate trim carpenter to hang the replacement door, replace the moulding inside and outside and do the rough repair to the drywall (no taping, caulking, puttying). We were looking for a painter to do the finish work and stain the door. After having a couple of painters blow us off by not showing up for estimates (I'm assuming because the job was too small to be worth their while), I decided to get an Angie's list membership to see what I could find. I found Alvarez to be one of the highest rated painters and from reading the reviews, it looked like they had done some smaller jobs and similar work. So I decided to give them a try and had Paul come out and give an estimate. At first, I thought the $750 bid was a little high, but I was just ready to get the work done and get the claim turned into insurance, so I scheduled the work with Paul. Paul and/or his crew ended up making three separate trips b/c of all the drying times and multiple coats required. When I considered the time and effort involved for making three trips for such a small job, the price seemed fair to me. Also, Paul was pretty easy to communicate with via email and phone. I'm very pleased with the end result and will most likely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: Stain and apply multiple coats of polyurethane clearcoat to unfinished front door, putty and caulk interior and exterior moulding, paint interior and exterior moulding with oil-based enamel and repair drywall around one side of interior door jamb. Drywall repair consisted of taping/bedding and texturing to match existing wall texture.

Alvarez painting did an exceptional job at my house. They arrived punctually every morning as promised and worked quietly and diligently throughout the day. They were at my house for about a week and during that time have to be the cleanest and most detail painters I have ever used. Every day Paul had his crew vacuum and clean up after themselves and what is even more amazing is that this particular type of work is exceedingly messy. There was quite a bit of "surprise" damage in my ceiling from water leaks throughout the years and Paul helped me get a plumber to determine exactly where the leak was. There was not a single item that he promised that was not only fulfilled but exceeded my expectations. I would unreservedly recommend him and his company and continue using them myself. :)
Description of Work: I had the ceilings scraped, re-paired, retextured and painted in the dining room, hall, kitchen, master bathroom and family room. There was a lot of water damage that needed to be repaired and they also painted the cabinets in the master bath.
Paul Alvarez was a real pleasure to work with. My brother and two sisters were working to get my Mom's home ready for sale after she moved to an assisted living facility. Paul understood our needs immediately on his first visit, made a number of excellent suggestions, worked with us on a tight budget, and modified his schedule to meet our very tight schedule for getting the house ready for sale. He and his crew promptly showed up at 0800 as promised the first day and hit the ground running. We were amazed at how fast they were able to remove the old wallpaper and prep the walls. We had to work in the garage getting my Mom's left over household goods read for a garage sale. Paul volunteered to bring over three large folding tables for us to use since we were all from out of town and did not have sufficient table space. His crew was friendly and professional as we worked alongside them for several days. When we realized that Paul only takes checks or cash as payment, there was a moment of panic in that we had to figure out who had brought a checkbook from our homes far away. Although we worked this out and paid him half up front and the remainder after final inspection, he had told us he trusted us and just send him a check when we got back home. That was an amazing response in these days of general distrust. The interior of the house looks like new. There were no issues at final inspection.I highly recommend Paul Alvarez for any kind of wall repair and painting project; he runs a professional business that does high quality work, and when you finish the project, you feel like you have made a new friend.

Paul and his team were excellent. I called Paul on the phone on a Monday and left a message with him. He called me back within the hour and we discussed what I would like to have painted in my home. We set a time the next day that he could come and look at the scope of the work. Paul arrived exactly when he said he would at my home and evaluated the project. I was given a price for the project and we agreed with he would get the job. On Thursday of that week his team was at my home picking up the drawers and cabinet fronts to take them to their business location to paint them. Monday of the next week they were in my home painting the facings for the cabinets. They brought the cabinets back the next day and installed them. By the weekend I had a beautifully finished kitchen. They did an excellent job and were spot on with the estimate both in price and time expected to complete the project. Paul is wonderful to work with and I will definitely use him in the future!

A simple job painting one kid's bedroom white to improve the walls. Paul was responsive, available, and on time. I was able to leave the house while he and his crew of two painted, and he made suggestions to improve the job a little (i.e. paint brand suitable for a kid's room, adding the closet only where needed to minimize increase in quoted cost). He was done within a few hours.

Paul and his crew arrived promptly on 12/8/2010 at the time promised. They immediately went to work bringing in scaffolding and ladders, placing dropcloths, and moving and covering furniture. The first day the team had almost all the "popcorn" removed with the exception of one room. Each day Paul and his crew arrived early, took 30 minutes for lunch, and then went back to work. There was little talk among them except for the necessary conversational instructions. Every afternoon they cleaned up and put everything away. Paul and the crew were pleasant and truly hard-working individuals. The ceiling, walls, and trim look fantastic and very professionally done. We are planning to seek Paul's assistance in re-staining our kitchen cabinets and in painting the upstairs rooms in the future.
Description of Work: The downstairs interior and the upstairs hallway of our home needed painting. The entryway and the master bedroom have quite high ceilings. We wanted the "popcorn" ceiling removed, re-textured, and painted in all rooms. Also we wanted the walls painted a different color from the ceiling. The trim would be painted to match the ceiling color. This would be a difficult job. Paul came and provided an estimate of cost and time involved.

Paul and his crew arrived at the agreed time and immediately began each of their seperate tasks in different areas of the house. Each hour of work revealed the transformation in progress. When the work was complete, they took additional time and care to clean their work area with attention to every detail. I recommend him highly.
Description of Work: Our foundation repair caused numerous large cracks in every room in the house. Paul and his crew did a beautiful job of repairing each. It is impossible to find a trace of the former damage. The carpentry involved replacing doors, creating an enlarged space amid kitchen cabinets for a bigger refrigerator that looks like it was custom built in the original kitchen, installing replacement flooring strips, replacing wainscoting, and removing an attached hutch. All this and a beautiful paint job too.

Project took 5 days (as estimated) and the crew showed up on time, every time. It was helpful to get a brief report on the objective for the day before it began. The rooms were cleared up at the end of each work day. Furniture was covered and/or moved from working areas. Paul and his crews were professional; clarified what was unclear or if they had questions. Paul was excellent as a supervisor, teacher and a consultant. Paul's son, who had to cover for Paul 1 time (due to illness), did an excellent job. He followed through by giving 'report' to Paul (& me) during and at the end of that day. It was helpful to have summaries by Paul of what was done each day. Content was consistent with the written estimate. I enjoyed my experience with Alvarez Painting and have already referred them to others. They exceeded my expectations and I will use them again. The paint job looks great.
Description of Work: Painted L.R, D.R. (study), dressing room, bedroom and bathroom. This included removing "popcorn" from the ceilings in all these rooms. Painting included crown moulding and baseboard in each room. Painted an unfinished bookcase to match the wall color of the living room. Also moved & replaced necessary tiles in shower in order to change the shower unit. Did an excellent job daily cleaning up the horrific mess left by removing "popcorn". Performed tasks beyond those requested (e,g,) patched screen in exterior screen door without being asked.

Paul needs to re-name his company "Drywall Ninjas." They arrived promptly on time, with all the personnell and equipment needed to do the job. They came in like a small army to knock out the enemy of my ugly drywall. They took great care in moving our furnishings and covering all of our items where texture was applied, and carefully covered our newly-installed travertine flooring. Very impressed. Will call Paul again when we're ready for all of our trim to be painted.

The job went smoothly and was completed in about 5 days. Another construction crew was working next door and also using our driveway. Both crews worked co-operatively and (to my knowledge) no conflict arose. Paul Alvarez is highly dependable, very professional. His crew is also good. Paul was on the job with his crew nearly all the time. They pressure washed the whole house first. Then Paul repaired the carport. When he removed water damaged carport siding, he found a major beam was badly water damaged also. Due to this unanticipated damage, the amount of repair work was more extensive than estimated. Paul built alternate supports to secure the roof while he removed and replaced the damaged beam. He changed the configuration of the siding and used Hardy Board instead of wood where there would be heavy rain runoff. He called in a roofer to correct some problems with the existing standing seam metal roof on the carport. Due to incorrect installation years ago, the roof was not performing as it should. Paul's roofer contact made corrections, securing the drip edge, sealing it, and making & installing needed end caps. Paul added drip edge metal along the side of the carport, to protect trim board. They also replaced a deteriorated window ledge and a trim piece on a gable end. The cement porch was scraped and repainted; one porch was painted and one was watersealed. All in all, the repair work looks really good and appears likely to hold up far better than before. The crew cleaned up the entire area and stowed tools daily. At the end of the job they moved all debris out to the curb for city pickup, after making sure the city would pick it up soon. Paul discussed every step with me and also with my husband, making sure we understood everything he did and we agreed with the plan. The whole house looks the best it ever has. In fact, since the job was complete, two unrelated passersby have complimented the appearance of the house! I'm very happy.
Description of Work: Painted exterior of home [1 1/2 story, mostly wood siding], including two wooden and one cement porch. Pressure washed the whole house, sanded and scraped loose, peeling paint before repainting. Replaced some deteriorated wood siding, window ledge and trim. Replaced carport beam and siding. Secured standing seam metal roof so that water does not seep under low edge.

We called Alvarez Painting to give us a quote on siding replacement and staining. We left a couple of voicemails with him telling him what we were needing, which were not returned, and called a third time and finally caught him. We set up an appointment for Saturday morning, and he asked us to also go on to Angie's List to request that time so that it would email him, which I didn't understand the need for but went ahead and did. Normally we wouldn't have tried so hard, but his reviews were good and we really needed the work done. We planned our day, which was very busy, around the appointment. We didn't expect him to be right on time necessarily, because we know few contractors ever are, but by noon we gave up on waiting for him, left him a voicemail and got on with our day. We finally talked to him later that day, and he said he didn't get the email so he thought it was cancelled. Right. He did agree to come out Sunday afternoon, which was nice ... or so I thought. He showed up that time and spent probably an hour walking the property with my husband, going over what needed to be done, and said he'd get back with us in a couple of days with an estimate. Never heard from him again. Huge waste of time and delay in getting the project started. Clearly he is busy. But we are very busy also, and we not only scheduled our weekend around him but put off making a decision for a week while trying to get something from him, If he didn't have the time or desire to do the job, we would have greatly appreciated his just telling us that.
Description of Work: We wanted him to give us a quote on exterior siding replacement and staining. It was a pretty big job, several thousand dollars worth. He didn't keep the appointment we made, finally came out the next day, and then never got back to us with a quote. Very unprofessional.
