He's done a pretty good job for me. I've had him do a couple of things. On a scale of 1 to 5, I'd rate him about 4, probably. The only thing that I'm a little concerned with him on is that he doesn't appear to have a great credit rating from a financial stand point. When you deal with him, you pretty much have to deal in cash and if there's equipment you have to rent, you kind of have to rent it yourself. Other than that, he's done a great job. As far as I can tell, he's a very honest person. He's just a small operator, of which there are some benefits when dealing with such.
Description of Work: He did some siding work.

Richard was extremely unreliable in finishing this job. In the end, we needed to hire someone else to complete the work because he was either not showing up at all, or showing up for half a day or less. He would swear up and down he'd be there "first thing in the morning", then not show up until 2pm. After a week of this we had had enough. He had subs that would stay for an hour at a time, if they would show up at all. We have used him in the past, and his work is decent (except for plumbing, he cannot do plumbing). However, it took MUCH longer than expected, and since he works time and materials, cost a lot more as well. If you dont care about time or money then he may be okay, otherwise be prepared to wait around and hear his laundry list of excuses about everything.
Description of Work: In kitchen, complete tear out of cabinets & replace with new, install new sink, backsplash.

Richard left the job unfinished and will not return my calls. We had to hire an electrician to fix an electrical problem created by his work downstairs. We have hired a new contractor to complete the job Richard started. There are things that are going to need to be fixed, due to the poor workmanship done on this job. I have used Richard in the past and been very satisfied, but this job has left me with a mess. I am going to have to spend more money cleaning up what he started and getting a new person to finish.
Description of Work: Richard was hired to finish a downstairs room with insulation, sheet rock and trim.
I'm glad I took the day off to work with this 'remodeler'...It started well, inferior plumbing work by previous contractor was corrected in bathroom and a trap door to the attic was fabricated. After that, the wheels fell off the RHM train. Richard shaved wood off the TOP of the front door in order to fix the threshold, forcing him to remortise the hinges and strike plates....huh ? I asked him why he didn't shave wood off the BOTTOM of the door (since he was installing a threshold) and he tried giving me an explanation using complicated technical jargon that didn't make any sense. I started regretting my decision to use this guy. Before finishing the door, he managed to cut his hand severely, wrapping it in a shirt and continuing. He probably should've gone to the hospital. MEANWHILE, his assistant was using inferior tools (ONE plastic .99 razor scraper) was taking WAY TOO LONG to finish one window pane. I quickly fashioned a multi-blade scraper and motored through his job for him. It is commendable that RHM hires the metally handicapped but they probably shouldn't be given dull razor blades to work with...whatever. The next day, he proudly calls me to come inspect the job. I found the 1/4 round stapled to the kickplate (after I had specifically told him NOT to), the reducers short-cut on the floor and a fresh gouge in my hardwood floor at the front door. The sink backsplash install was a disaster, bondo everywhere, exposed screwheads and the faucet wasn't anchored/didn't work. He argued, then ignored my request to replace the kickplate. I had to ask him again. I reluctantly paid him the balance and he came back to finish the kickplate, reducers. He PROMISED that he would come back to finish the plumbing job, then never did, ignoring my text/phone requests to do so. I had to pay another handyman $300 to fix his work. In summary, I think Richard Cohn is confident, but not competent. He has probably been laid off from his job and is scratching to make a living. It didn't work very well for me....
Description of Work: Richard Cohn of RHM attempted minor plumbing, trim carpentry, attic access door fabrication/trim, kitchen kickplate, threshold replacement, window cleaning, floor reducers minor electrical.

Richard quoted us a "by the hour" figure which we thought was fair. He began with the mess the previous pair left us and fixed and replaced all the bungled up siding on the home. He then replaced areas of dry rot and more siding and fixed "a new door" the previous handymen left us as well as seal windows and an inside corner of the house. I know we left him with a list last weekend for outside lights and an upstairs balcony that has dry rot and I am sure when we get there Friday night it will be great! He is very efficient and all pricing seems fair and does a great job cleaning up! I know he has other customers in the area but I hope we can continue our relationship until my long list is done!!
Description of Work: We have an older weekend home in Galveston, which needs some TLC. We felt like the accidental tourists and mistakenly hired a pair of looney tunes from the internet (my husband didn't know I use Angies List!!). They left us high and dry...with a huge mess. Found Richard in Angies List and he responded the same weekend (came on Sunday!) He quoted us a fair price to fix the mess we were left with and continues to help with other repairs on the house.

Richard arrived on schedule and went right to work. He started on the larger job first which was to cut out the counter top for the cooktop stove. He then installed the cooktop stove. He then made a trip to Home Depot to get the flex vent for installation in my cabinet above the new exhaust fan. He then proceeded to do the sheetrock panels. Richard works efficiently and loves to talk as he works.
Description of Work: Cutout the counter top and installed the cooktop stove. Installed a new vent for the stove exhaust fan. Reinstalled the sheetrock cutout panels from the plumbing work. Installed framing around the panels to make it look nice.

French doors were installed improperly by the builder of our home and caused a water leak in a downstairs bedroom. Richard and his helper replaced French doors and rotten wood in an upstairs bedroom. I was pleased with that job so I asked Richard to come back to replace Sheetrock in the downstairs bedroom. He charged me almost $350 to tear down the wall and show me that there was rotten wood inside the wall. $100 of that $350 was for materials that was grossly inflated. I asked for a quote on totally repairing the wall. He said he had to bring his helper so it would be $50 an hour for Richard and $35 for his helper ($85 per hour). He estimated 8-10 hours for the project. I asked if I could by the parts to try to save money. We are on a strict budget.he made a list and I bought everything on it. He assured me that paying extra for his helper would cut down time spent which would save money. On the scheduled day he arrived at 10 am which I thought was late. At noon he said he needed more supplies. I said I would go get them and left. He called and told me to come back and he would just take a lunch break. He got back around 1:30. He kept saying there was so much more damage than they thought. I really didn't see all the extra damage he was describing. I saw an extra stud that needed to be replaced. At the end of the day, he had replaced the rotten wood, but did not install hardy or do Sheetrock. He said that he would need an additional 8 hours at $85 an hour ($680) because he needed his helper to help him with Sheetrock. I've never heard of one person not being able to drywall a regular wall by themselves. So basically, he almost doubled the price. It was Thursday and he said he couldn't come back until Monday. I could understand the price doubling if the wall had not been torn down before he quoted the hours. But there was no way that the extra work should have amounted to double the original estimate. He left my house that day with basically a piece of plywood for an outside walI. We had to buy plastic to cover it until we could find another contractor. I found another contractor to complete the project by himself for $400 and he did an excellent job. I will never use Richard again. I felt like he was riding the clock to increase the amount of time and he doubled the amount for materials. If you use him, I would suggest small projects and buy the materials yourself. He did quality work but it wasn't worth the stress. I'll stick with using a contractor that will give me a price and then do the work. Having a $50-$85 an hour employee is not what I am looking for in a contractor. He also charges a service fee for coming to your house. ***update: Oct 2013- the French doors that Richard installed are leaking badly when it rains. I called the manufacturer and they sent an inspector to look at the doors. The inspector showed me that the doors were installed incorrectly by Richard. They are out of square, out of plumb and not level. The reveal is off badly and the the door is dragging. I am going to have to pay someone else to reinstall the doors now. This reinforces the fact that I will NEVER use Richard again.
Description of Work: Replaced French floors and rotten wood.

Richard was excellent. He really helped me out of a jam with a patio cover that was built for me by a bad contractor several years ago. The original patio began to leak a few years ago and eventually lost it's ceiling during Hurricane Ike. After consulting another contractor, it was brought to my attention that the original patio was not built to code. After contacting several patio companies, none would touch it as they would not fix other people's work without completely tearing it down first. That's when I found Richard on Angie's list. He hooked me up with an excellent structural engineering company (Island Engineering in Galveston) that re-designed the patio that allowed me to keep alot of the existing materials. Richard and his helper Troy did a great job and what I liked most, was that he kept me informed all the way through the process from demo to re-construction. While the entire project has taken longer than I had hoped, most of that was out of Richard's control. The delays were usually caused waiting for inspections, drawings, etc. The new patio is great looking, completely up to windstorm code and is probably stronger structurally than the house. We often joked that when the next hurricane comes through, we were going to chain ourselves to the patio posts. He is very cordial and professional and his prices were reasonable. I would definitely recommend his work to anyone.

It was an Angie's List Big Deal that I purchased. The experience was very good. He was a very hard worker. He was always trying to do the very best for me and not trying to sell me something that I didn't need. I've had him back several times. I've found his work and prices extremely reasonable. He has helped me do a whole lot of things around the house that needed to be done. The only other charge was a trip charge because he has to travel a long distance to get here. I didn't mind that at all.
Description of Work: I did RHM Construction Services to do a wide range of repairs to the house, including treating, scraping and painting the outside. He also fixed a window sill, mounted shelving in the house and installed electrical on the outside.

We hired Richard the first time in March to replace two doors in our old residence; went well. So, we thought we would have him do a couple of projects at the new house. We hired a General Contractor to the major work and we thought we would see if Richard could complete these smaller projects. That was a mistake. He quoted me, but not on paper. Apparently, when he quotes you he doesn't really explain that he has become your employee and you pay him by the hour. He shows up late because other jobs take longer than he thinks they will. He left the sheetrock incomplete in the bedroom and my general contractor had to finish (even though I explained to Richard that I needed it done and he assured me it would be) and according to my licensed GC it wasn't done properly. He (the GC) didn't charge me to fix it or finish it. He left the trim on the exterior door he replaced unfinished (the inside trim). He would leave and expect a check every day he was there. He installed the cabinet and shelves in my living room worked about 6 hours and I gave him a check; he didn't finish because he didn't bring enough material to finish the job. He told me it would only take 2 days to do the work (the pantry shelves, exterior door, and shelving and cabinet). I don't believe we should have to pay for his errors in estimating time or material. He is supposed to be the professional. I assumed that when I gave him the check, it was the last payment I needed to give to him. Well, I was wrong. He came back a couple of days later to finish (or so we thought) and my husband ( I was not home) gave him another check for an incomplete project. He didn't finish because he purchased the wrong kind of paint for the cabinet. He did tell my husband he would come back (who knows when) and paint the cabinet at no extra charge. When I found out I called Richard and he didn't seem to be concerned with my satisfaction of the project or labor practices. I fired him. I painted the cabinet and shelves myself (the cabinet doors turned yellow) and yes I sanded and used primer first. I had to strip them and re do them and they turned out fine; however, I don't believe I should have had to do them to begin with. Our GC came after that to do a walk through with us of what he had done (he didn't charge us by the hour and put everything in writing and if we made a change there was a change order in writing) and was not impressed with the cabinet and shelving and said he would put a quartz counter top on the cabinet to match what he had done in our kitchen at no cost to us; because he didn't want me to be unhappy. Even though it wasn't his project. Bottom line; unless you want an employee to pay by the hour, don't hire RHM for anything.

He was chatty and upbeat, offered reasons why he couldn't install screen doors properly. They look presentable when I make slight adjustments on the sliding tracks. My decision to never use him again is his trying to charge more than advertised. I wouldn't trust him with any further business transactions.
Description of Work: The provider wanted to charge me more than the advertised $160 for 4 hrs as advertised on Angie's List website. He said there were two rates...I paid him the advertised rate though he didn't complete all the items on my list and just worked 3 1/2 hours.

I'm submitting this review a few months after the work was completed as I wanted to see the work first hand when I got home, so sorry for the delayed review. I am a very picky person and as a result do most jobs myself, that being said; Richard did a very good job with only minor things that caught the attention of this extremely detail oriented person (my wife uses another name for that). Thanks for your service Richard, I will be calling you as soon as I submit this for another project. - Steve
Description of Work: Hired Richard to remove old kitchen lighting and replace with track lighting. As I have been away from home for a pretty long period, my wife also had him do quite a few other odds and ends from the "honey-do" list - Thanks Richard!

I bought the "handyman for the day" deal for $319. The deal did not include the service call charge of $25, which was stated on the deal so no problem. Scheduling was no problem. Richard arrived about 30 minutes late the first day due to traffic. We had explained to work to be done, and he got started right away with a trip to the store for supplies. He cut the new windowsills but could not install, prime or paint them because he did not bring the router with him. Showed us that the windowsills had rotted because the brick was not sealed outside the window. Rebuilt two drawers which were falling apart. We hired him to return the following day at $50 per hour to finish windowsills and work on fence. He left about 30 minutes early the first day, but made up the time later. The second day, he arrived several hours late because his truck broke down. It was raining that day so he did only 4 hours, mainly inside work. He used a "chip kit" to patch an area where the porcelain came off of our tub. Also did a lot of caulking in bathrooms and windows. Repaired about 6 window screens which our dog had torn up. Also replaced some of the woodwork on the side of our kitchen island (cut, sanded, stained). Did not charge the $25 service charge that day due to being late. On the third day, we had him come to finish up. He spent about 6 hours putting new board on the short fence by the house (4' tall, about 8' of fence), and rebuilding the fence gate. This was longer than we intended to pay for, but he did a really excellent job. Richard was very easy to work with, and he had great ideas for repairing things. He work was excellent, except for the repair of the bathtub which did not match at all and then came off completely about three days later, but he used an off-the-shelf kit for that. The fence gate is extremely sturdy and looks beautiful. He was great about telling us how to fix things ourselves that we did not necessarily want to pay him to do. My only complaint is that things took longer than we expected, and since we were paying by the hour it all ended up costing more than we had anticipated spending. That being said, I don't in any way feel that he was working too slowly or wasting time. He worked continuously the whole time. I think it is more that it was difficult for him to estimate how long things would take.
Description of Work: Replacement of three inside windowsills, replacement of 8 feet of 4' fence between garage & house, rebuild of 2 cabinet drawers, general caulking, rebuild of window screens, repaired chip in porcelain bathtub.

Richard quoted 21/2 days for the entire project but it took a little longer because of weather and unforeseen scope on the soffit and fascia repairs. Although the project went over 3 days,I was only charge for three. I consider that very fair. I have as yet only seen photos of the project as I am away from the home, but everything seems to be well done and I will see it soon and come back and give more complete comments.

I was very impressed with the service. He showed up on time and surveyed the work. He left to get the specific needs for the job. Upon return he got right to work. One of the main reasons I hired a professional was because of the textured ceiling. This was the longest part of the repair because of multiple passes and drying time. I am most impressed with the final results. I would recommend RHM to anyone. They are definitely on my go to list now.

I needed someone with more experience related to duct work and drywall (and with the right tools for the job) to move an opening for the range hood exhaust up a foot. After reading several handyman reviews on here, I called Richard. He was prompt to answer and provide enough information over the phone that I felt comfortable having him come out to survey the job. It wasn't a large $$ effort, but Richard gave me a reasonable estimate, and he had experience in this type of task. We scheduled his return, which he showed up on time with all the tools and materials needed to complete it. Richard worked efficiently and thoroughly, but didn't seem rushed despite it being a relatively small job. I appreciated him showing me a couple 'tricks' so I could do this job myself next time (likely never but hey...), being that I am generally fairly handy. He is courteous and friendly and cleaned up the area well after completing. I'll surely be calling him again for future jobs that I am not experienced or comfortable doing myself.

Great reliability, honesty, and attention to detail. Very knowledgeable and experienced. Would recommend.
Description of Work: RHM made recommendations and removed mold from the exterior of the house, repaired and replaced rotten wood, and prepped and repainted the trim.
The work was done by Mr. Troy Barousse who answered my call for a handyman from "Handyman Matters" . Handyman Matters is not doing business now so Troy Batousse answered my request, quoted me a reasonable rate, arrived on time and did the job in about five hours. Troy said he has worked for RHM and would be associated with them in the future. A couple of unforseen problems where encountered and Troy was quick to find a solution which is much appreciated. I plan to use them again for some drywall work after the holidays.
Description of Work: This job consisted of removing existing window blinds and installing new blinds in seven windows and one patio door. The old blinds were outdated aluminum blinds, cheapos if you will.
