Working with Paula was a wonderful experience. The paint colors which she helped us select are beautiful; since repainting, we have received many compliments from visitors. Paula showed us where to find affordable (but very nice) office furniture. In other rooms, she used the furniture and artwork which we own to stage our house. Our additional purchases have been minimal. As she was rearranging, she would explain her reasoning, and it always had to do with the impression that it would leave on the prospective buyer. Paula certainly knows what she is doing. It was a pleasure to do business with her.
Description of Work: Paula provided home staging services for us. She helped us select paint colors for the interior of our house. She did some faux painting in our entryway. She helped us find furniture for our home office. She rearranged furniture and artwork in various rooms. She also offered some suggestions for our landscaping.

I liked her but she had a set fee to come out the first time and she really didn't pay attention to the time and charged me more than she committed to, which kind of bothered me. I couldn't figure out why she had all those good reviews on Angie's List because she was middle of the pack at best. I have worked with a lot of designers and she was just average. She ended up telling me that she gave her customer's a $25 service credit if they would go on Angie's List and write a review. I found that troubling and didn't trust that it was objective. I stopped using her because I didn't like that she charged me for every single minute we spent together and much of it was spent with us small talking. I enjoyed getting to know her personally but I didn't want to be charged for chit chat.
Description of Work: She provided design consulting for me.

Sorry for the misunderstanding. My current fee for an initial consultation is $295 for three hours, time after that is billed at $80/hr. This is clearly stated on my website, but I will try to remember to also mention it to each new client to avoid another misunderstanding. As a consultant, I charge for my time. Any time spent with a client is 'work' time that I am not spending with family and so I need to charge for it. The reason for the coupon discount, is so that I can track were new clients are finding me. Once I know that they are on Angie's List I encourage them the write a review. Again, I am sorry for any misunderstandings.

Everything has gone very well. I am very pleased with everything Paula has done. Our painting has been completed and WE LOVE THE COLORS Paula helped us chose. The specific painting she did for us is awesome. The shopping has been fun and the things we have brought home so far have been just perfect and very pleasing as our home begins to take shape. Her suggestions and ideas of ways to use our existing pieces have just been marvelous. Every time I am amazed at how good it looks. Great experience. Looking forward to continuing to work with Paula in completing our decor.
Description of Work: We have benefited several times from Paula Stone's services over a period of time. Overall consultation. Guided me in selecting paint colors for every room in my home. Faux painted two brick walls in my garden room. Shopping to choose several pieces for various areas in my home. She is very pleasant to work with. She is also very good at what she does and practical. I loved the way she took some items I have and used them in another way that made a great impact in my decor. I absolutely will continue to work with Paula and would recommend her to anyone who ask. I think she is talented, knowledgeable and very creative and fun.

On the plus side, Paula was able to provide me some names of companies, people or vendors I might contact for certain services or repairs, such as rebuilding broken furniture, possibly locating tiles to match mine, etc. Overall however, it felt like she just didn't like my house or furnishings and was very condescending in many of her remarks, facial expressions and overall body language. I felt that Paula was providing advice as if I had an unlimited budget and was planning to totally remodel and/or redecorate the house, as opposed to what I specifically requested, which was staging the house on a low budget. She gave me advice about replacing the carpet in my living area with tile and basically kept making remarks about how unusual and bad the layout of the room and carpet was and how the space and the placement of the carpet was undesirable from a decorators point of view. This is not what I asked for nor what I wanted or needed to hear. In another room she went on and on about how the mattress (it was a queen size mattress and bedspread on a queen size bed) on my bed didn't fit the frame and actually suggest I take out the bed frame and sit the mattress on the floor. Again, this did nothing constructive from my point of view as far as staging the house, as anyone looking at a house knows the bed itself doesn't stay there anyway. Fine for advice if it was decorating advice for remodeling a home I was going to live in, but not appropriate for the purpose of staging a house to sell. I had the clear impression that because she didn't see nice fancy furniture or art work in my house, I was not the kind of customer she wanted as a customer.
Description of Work: I met with Paula to ask her advice on staging my home in preparation for putting it on the Real Estate market. I explained to her that my goal was to stage the house to look nice and appropriate for listing on the market, but that I was not willing or able to make any significant expenditures, and to please keep that in mind as we did a walk through the house.

I am so sorry that Member felt this way and wish I had known at the time that she wanted something something other than what I was doing. Most of my clients like to hear the thinking behind what I do, so I have developed a habit of thinking out loud. It is meant to show the process and help the client not only with the house we are in, but with future homes too. Some of what I said was meant to help avoid similar situations in her next home. Naturally, to address a problem it must first be identified as a problem. Most homes have problem areas and to discuss one was never meant as an offense to the owner but rather a teachable moment. ALL homes are important and I am please to work in homes of various price ranges. Big and grand or small and simple, I love them all. What makes a home important, is what it does for the people who live there, it has nothing to do with the size or price of the house and certainly not anything to do with the "fanciness". I am very sorry that Member got that impression

The shopping/staging experience went very well. We visited four stores within a two hour period. We looked at rugs, lamps, armoires, bookcases, chests, and chairs. Paula explained why certain items would or would not fit with my decor. Along the way, she gave me tidbits about antique furniture. I saw antique furniture items that I liked and she explained why they were good or not so good values for the prices advertised. As a result of her assistance, I did find several book cases that I ordered that day. The experience was highly successful. I liked all of the styles of furniture Paula suggested. She found chair types that I would not have considered but found them to fit with my sofa and to be very comfortable. Thanks to Paula's services, now I know specifically what I want so I just need to find the right color.
Description of Work: Services performed were shopping for furniture and staging. Paula spent an hour surveying the four rooms involved for staging purposes and to get the right mix of furniture for each room. She looked at the space available and suggested ways to rearrange existing furniture to accommodate furniture that I needed.

The service experience was excellent overall. The best part is the service continues. I thought once service visit was over I'd be on my own. Delightfully, Paula continues to share advice and send contact information to me ( via email messages) on areas we discussed during her visit. Friends who visited are amazed at the difference and even my young son remarked, "Wow, Mom, this is great!" Words can't clearly articulate the overall improvement and warmth that was added to our home without spending money on "decorator" items. I now feel so much more at ease having friends over to visit and enjoy fellowship becasue the family room is open and inviting.
Description of Work: Paula Stone provided interior decorating advice, assisted with picture hanging, arranging furniture, and continued to provide resources and advice throughout the weekend and days following her service visit on 7 Oct 11. My husband came home after Paula's visit and he was absolutely amazed and thrilled with the improvements made in 5 short hours with Paula's help and expert eye for details. No new furniture was added, but her well thought out placement of furniture made "eye candy" of beautiful antiques that were previously placed in areas where their beauty was largely unnoticed.

Paula helped me select colors for a painting job in my kitchen and family room. She also helped me select material to refinish my couch. I was very pleased that prior to the actual color selection she took the time to sit down with me to discuss some basic design ideas and my likes and dislikes. She utilized this information very effectively to tailor her suggestions. She has excellent ideas. She gave me all the time I needed and I never felt rushed into making decisions. She is knowledgeable and personable. I will definitely use her again on my next home decorating project.

I have since had my home painted and the colors are right on for my personality. It takes more time than you know to ferret out what look a client might want, but Paula made it fun and she seemed to have an intuitive feel for what I wanted. She is a very kind person and she puts in the effort to make one feel comfortable with her. I love, love, love my painted fireplace -- and so does everyone else who sees it -- even my husband. I had picked the wrong-sized furniture in the past, and I didn't want to make that same, expensive mistake again. She helped with those choices. She also made me feel secure with some of my outside-the-box choices - as in color and wallpaper.
Description of Work: The most important thing Paula helped with was choosing paint colors for the interior of my home. She helped me decide how to furnish a room and the arrangement of furniture. She painted the brick of our family room fireplace. She took me shopping and helped me determine the correct size of a sofa and dining room furniture.

Paula had donated her expertise to KRLN's Annual Auction. I was the high bidder for 8 hrs of consulting. I was only going to change my living and dinning rooms;. this included painting and redecorating. She help me through the painstaking decision of colors and after the painting was completed; she used her talent in rearranging and redecorating these rooms. . She also assisted in selecting several new pieces of furniture. I received four bids on the painting to be done; I selected the company she recommended. They were the best I have ever used - from moving a lot of furniture, covering the floors and furniture, prep work and actual painting. The complete process was very professional. Cost for painting was around $1000.00, which was not the high bid. I was so impressed w/ the results that I hired her to help w/ the downstairs and upstairs hallway/stairs, entertainment room, sun room and dinette/kitchen area.
Description of Work: She assisted in wall color selection, redecorating and new furniture purchases. The painter she recommended was outstanding.

Paula arrived right on time for both appointments (a big plus in my book) and was very professional. She was also very personable and easy to talk to. She asked a lot of questions to get a feel for what we like and wanted, which was harder than it sounds because we really didn't know. The paint colors we selected worked well, but what I thought was really helpful were her ideas about how to highlight the architectural features and use the colors to make the living areas a cohesive unit rather than four painted rooms. I've had much of my art for 25 years, in four or five different houses, and her groupings and arrangements of my art far exceed anything I was ever able to do with it. Perhaps her greatest success was in our "formal living room" which is the first thing you see when you walk into our house. We have a pool table in the room, along with bar stools and other non-standard furniture, and it just didn't look right. By moving the furniture around just a little and some creativity with the art work, she made it look great. Bottom line...Paula made my rather average furnishings look great! She was worth every penny, and I am thinking about having her back in 6 months or a year to do an update.
Description of Work: Paula came to our new home twice...the first time was to help us select paint colors, and the second was to arrange art and furniture, and to provide general decorating advice.

I am glad I decided to utilize her expertise in design prior to buying my furniture. She met me first at my house to see my space and then she met me at a furniture store. I was pleased that she helped me choose furniture that was practical in purpose and budget friendly. Overall, she is able to make recommendations that are budget friendly and practical since she is not paid to sell. You pay only for her expertise and experience and she is then able to provide specific recommendations based on your needs.
Description of Work: Provided recommendations on furniture placement, what to buy, and chose colors for multiple rooms in the house. On a later date she went shopping with me for furniture for the family room. She chose things I would not have normally chosen and helped me buy things that were the appropriate style and size for the room.

Paula was very personable and professional, and her advise was excellent. Paula stated she was an on hands designer, she then said we could move the sectional sofa from the family room into the formal living room, I mentioned to her my concerns about damaging the wooden floors she assured me the the castors under the furniture would not impair the floors, well unfortunately it did. Several days later whilst cleaning the floors I discovered dark scuff marks on the ceramic tiles in the family room area, and scuff and scratch marks on the wooden floors. After informing Paula of the said problem she came out to the house to see if she could repair the damage which she tried to no avail.

Paula is a delightful person to work with. She asks questions and listens to what you want. She is punctual and has a lovely, easy personality. I loved working with her both times and recommend her highly.
Description of Work: We were going to put our house on the market in March 2010, and before listing it I called Paula to help in staging. She was amazing! She pointed out that our art and decor would make people think of the house as "the Southwestern house" and not the house with the great views and large rooms, and she suggested removing all items that would catch anyone's attention. She even convinced my husband, who wasn't convinced we needed to stage, to put away his various collections of masks, planes, etc. Her charge for this was $150. After we moved into our new house I had a problem deciding which art to hang and where. She came out, I thought to give me advice, but she also hung all the art herself that day! She placed one large colorful piece in a space between and below two high windows that looks great and makes you almost not even aware of those two small windows! Everything she did looks wonderful.

Paula looked at every room and spent over 3 hours with me discussing my desires for the ambiance, the placement of furniture, and the organization of the rooms. She looked at old furniture that I had and made price-conscious suggestions on whether or not to upholster. She suggested appropriate heights for things like bookshelves to make the living room look larger, she offered alternative suggestions for coffee tables by asking me what I used the coffee table for, what was its purpose. (As one alternative, she recommended the use of ottomans to save space). Paula showed me how to make the best use of the kitchen/living room area, she sketched plans for the placement of furniture, and helped me determine how best to use and set up the 3 bedrooms. Also, Paula provided advice on what to do about my original flooring (which needed work) to make it a proud compliment to the rest of the house. After our consultation, I made 2 follow-up calls to Paula for more advice/clarification on her suggestions without feeling like I was imposing on her time. Paula was excellent at listening to what I thought I wanted and molding my ideas into a workable, space-saving plan that I could live with everyday. She asks a lot of "why" questions to get me thinking about alternative solutions, which I think is brilliant! In my opinion, Paula's gift is her ability to listen to the client and work with his/her ideas without imposing her own personal taste. She is professional in her approach and displays excellent knowledge of design details/room structure and what works best. I highly recommend her and I got more than my money's worth from the consultation.
Description of Work: The service provided was design consultation. Basically, I needed someone to tell me what to do with my house. I was totally lost since this was my first house. I have a small house that was built in 1954. I wanted the rooms to look spacious and I wanted to make the best use of the space. Also, I had a wall removed between the kitchen and living rooms and wasn't sure how to best combine the two rooms using an open area concept. The original house floors needed work and I did not know how to best solve that problem.

I have used Paula recently with excellent results, so I called her again for advice on some specific problems I was having at my home. I have an beautiful antique double bed that I don't want to part with, but I needed a queen size mattress for it. After talking to two different furniture makers with no good results, Paula came up with an ingenious idea to outline the headboard with an upholstered board, which makes it a queen size bed. I also have a very large, odd-sized bathroom that needed rugs, and I had been unable to find any that were the right size and color. She helped me find some gorgeous custom rugs that work perfectly in the room. I also have a large hallway that I wanted to be beautiful as well as practicul and useful, and Paula was able to find the perfect furniture for it.

She was wonderful! She asked questions and made sure she was giving us the type of information we needed. She encouraged us to take lots of notes and was very patient with us. She took into consideration the types of projects my husband and I could do ourselves and what we would need help with. She also suggested stages so we wouldn't get overwhelmed tackling everything at once. We will definitely ask her to come back when we're ready to pick out our carpet and kitchen countertops.
Description of Work: We have lived in our home for 25 years and have only updated our bathrooms. We wanted to do a good job of redecorating and be done for another 25 years! Paula went through each of our rooms with us and gave suggestions for furniture arrangement, paint colors, type of flooring, wall decorations, even ways to enlarge our small kitchen. She understood that we want good quality and nothing too trendy.

See the section above (some people, namely me) just can't follow instructions.
Description of Work: In February 2010 I purchased a 20 year old home that had not been updated in the ensuing years. I contacted Paula shortly thereafter as I quickly realized, that as a color challenged male, I had no clue what to paint anything. Moreover, while I knew that certain things like linoleum flooring and a hanging florescent box lighting fixture in the kitchen had to go, what to replace them with was an entirely different matter. Paula, demonstrating admirable patience and never once rolling her eyes, worked through her trusty paint chip file with me room by room to discover not only what would look great, but would be in colors that I liked. She gave me valuable advise on the kitchen lighting and helped me select flooring for throughout the house. She saved me quite a bit of money through the process as well, especially on the carpeting and in the kitchen (I had myself pretty well talked into replacing the cabinets due to the starkness of the kitchen, but she showed me how to resolve that problem with color elsewhere). I especially appreciated her deep knowledge of all sorts of esoteric and practical home decorating details from carpet manufacturing to tile cleaning. Throughout the process she worked diligently to determine what my objectives and likes were and to come up with affordable suggestions and solutions consistent with them. I was so pleased with her help on the remodeling front that I decided to use her to help me on the furniture front (for all practical purposes I had none when I moved in post the remodel) even though I thought I pretty well knew what I was going to buy. I quickly discovered that there were a lot of things that I had not thought about and alternatives and ideas that had not occurred to me. In the end, my furniture (while still in the style that I like) ended up being quite a bit different and a lot more fun than what I was originally thinking about. Entertaining guests with this furniture arranged in this particular way will be a breeze.

Paula arrived right on time. She told me about her services and then questioned me to discover what I wanted from her. She rearranged and edited my dining room and made suggestions for my living room to do after the painting is finished. She helped my husband and me choose colors for our living, hall, stairwell and master bedroom and front door.
Description of Work: Paula was very professional and extremely knowledgeable. She immediately began questioning me to determine exactly what I wanted from her design services. She then went to work and made my dining room look likke it could be a picture in Southern Living. She also helped me to edit my liiving room so it seemed more organized and relaxing. She assisted my husband and me in selecting paint colors for our living room, hall, stairwell and master bedroom without any arguments between the two of us. I couldn't be happier with Paula's design services.

Paula charges $250 for the first visit. At first I thought that was a lot, but I called her several times after she left to ask questions. She was always professional and thorough in answering them. I even had the painter call her to clarify an issue with a painting technique she had recommended. We are happy with her recommendations as well as with her customer service and professionalism.
Description of Work: I called Paula because I had the floor of our atrium painted in a color that I chose myself and did not like. I am writing the report now because we just completed the work today (8/3/10). Paula and I sat on the floor of the atrium with her color samples, found three different colors that looked good, and decided to have the entire atrium painted using all three colors. She also made other suggestions, which we plan to do, that will enhance the space.
