Response from Big Country Trees
Providing some basic information about my services - I have had two complaints on Angie’s List since being licensed in 1974. To date, I have performed over 45,000 on site, physical consultations and written two books on tree problems. We have a BBB A+ rating, bonded, and I am a Certified Arborist. The first complaint was when I had a tire blow out and damaged my RV in Plainview, Texas, on my way home from vacation and could not make a work appointment. The customer complained about that even though, as he wrote and admitted on the complaint, he was called about 2.5 hours in advance and told I could not make it. I have had two complaints out of 45,000 consultations in 38 years. My second complaint since 1974 is as follows: To begin with, oak wilt leaves were found in my customer’s yard. That is not disputed by my customer. I was not there to do an oak wilt survey as complainant states. She is trying to add to her “SPIN.” My call sheet says I was called about aphids and the Bradford pear in the back yard with fire blight, (near where the oak wilt leaves were found). Four people saw the oak wilt leaves. I COULD JUST STOP HERE, BUT FEEL THE NEED TO WRITE TO SHOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO A TREE SERVICE, WHEN A COMPLAINANT PUTS AN UNTRUE SPIN ON SOMETHING. The complainant was wrongly misinformed about this situation from the other tree company, making her angry with me and she wanted to show all, that I was wrong. The complainant thought she would just rip me apart over the phone and to my customer and she did do a rant on me. Then she decided to do more and put this on Angie’s List. Her tree man did her a disservice by not giving her complete truthful information as explained below. My customer told me that he saw the oak wilt leaves and that “He was satisfied at seeing the oak wilt leaves and SATISFIED WITH the $275.00 plus tax treatment for oak wilt for 3 trees.” I wonder where the complainant got the idea, as she wrote on the complaint, that “I did a pricey treatment”. She just added something that was never discussed; she just wanted to rant and made this up. This is an example of the complainant saying untrue things about things she has no idea about. PUTTING A SPIN ON THIS IN AN ATTEMPT TO BELITTLE ME. I never told the complainant or anyone there were oak wilt leaves in the neighbor’s yard as I did not enter her yard and I can’t see over a 6’ wooden fence. Complainant’s oak wilt expert, spent quite a bit of time looking in her yard for oak wilt, finding none, then trying to make it look like I was wrong. My customer told complainant there are oak wilt leaves on the ground (IN MY CUSTOMER’S YARD) under the complainant’s tree, which hangs over the fence FROM THE NEIGHBOR’S SIDE. Live Oak trees with active Oak Wilt have very distinct leaf pattern changes. The recent leaves will usually be green with brown or dark yellow leaf veins. It may still be attached to the tree or under the tree on the ground. A leaf can also blow under other trees not affected with wilt, confusing oak wilt source locations. A leaf that has been on the ground for months will usually be a dead looking brown with darker brown veins as the chlorophyll disappears after 30-40 days. Lawns are typically mowed weekly and areas are blown clean of leaves and you do not find many Oak Wilt leaves. I just happened to be in this yard between lawn mowings on a requested annual tree service call, when my wife Janet, came up to me and said there were Oak Wilt leaves under the neighbor’s tree that extends over the fence into my customer’s yard. (My wife has been in training for years and she recognizes oak wilt.) I looked and there were over 20 oak wilt leaves on the ground under this tree, and at least three oak wilt leaves still attached to this tree. That is OAK WILT and nothing changes that FACT. The oak wilt leaves still attached to her tree showed which tree the oak wilt leaves came from. When you have a customer present and he is looking at the oak wilt leaves on ground then WHAT CAN I SAY. IT IS WHAT IT IS. It doesn’t matter how much SPIN a neighbor puts out; it doesn’t change the facts. The complainant told me during her rant that I did not know what an oak wilt leaf looks like. I told her a kindergarten student could tell the difference. She was doing a rant on me, so I bluntly told her some facts and she calls me arrogant for defending myself. Her tree man did not do her a good service, as he could have called me or he could have told his customer that oak wilt leaves could be there for a few days and gone the next day after lawn service was done. He left her confused without information, so she just ranted about things her tree man misrepresented to her about me. I CAN’T ALLOW SOMEONE TO BELITTLE ME TO MY CUSTOMER AND TELL ME THAT I AM BEING UNTRUTHFUL, WHEN THE FACTS AND MY CUSTOMER’S KNOWLEDGE, SHOW OTHERWISE. I REALLY FEEL HER TREE SERVICE FAILED TO EDUCATE HER ON WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED. THIS MAY HELP EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE: In an expensive neighborhood as this is, lawns are mowed weekly or bi-weekly. One tree man may be there before a lawn is mowed and easily find oak wilt leaves; then another tree man comes by after a yard is mowed and blown clean and he most likely will never find an oak wilt leaf. WHY? Lawn mowers chop up and mulch leaves leaving no evidence, except maybe an oak wilt leaf still in the tree. They fall quickly and you don’t usually find many oak wilt leaves in trees. I have been back to this yard and noticed that the area where the oak wilt leaves were, is on the right rear side of the yard. This entire right back side of the yard is covered with landscape river rock. The yard service blows all debris and leaves off this area when they mow. There are usually no leaves left in this area. If a tree man went to this yard between mowing, he might find a few leaves in this rock garden. If he returned a week later, no leaves would be there. Oak wilt leaves do not just fall all the time. They may only appear several times a year for a week or so. I usually find most in April and May. According to complainant, the other tree man waited 30 days to enter my customer’s yard, and by then the lawn mowing companies had mowed at least twice and blown away all leaves on the ground. Thirty days later, you would have no idea whether oak wilt leaves were on the ground, 30 days before. Her tree man should have told her that the yard had been mowed at least twice and leaves blown clear at least twice, since I found oak wilt leaves 30 days earlier and that is the reason oak wilt leaves were no longer there. REMEMBER, FOUR PEOPLE SAW OAK WILT LEAVES ON THE GROUND. REMEMBER, I HAVE DONE OVER 45,000 ON SITE CONSULTATIONS SINCE 1974. MANY TREE COMPANIES JUST DON’T HAVE ENOUGH COMMON SENSE TO COMPREHEND WHY THERE CAN BE DISAGREEMENTS BECAUSE OF THE CONSULTATIONS BEING ON DIFFERENT DAYS. 30 DAYS LATER, YARD CONDITIONS CHANGE AND THE OAK WILT LEAVES ARE NOT ALWAYS PRESENT BECAUSE OF CIRCUMSTANCES SUCH AS BEING MULCHED OR BLOWN AWAY BY LAWN MOWING SERVICES. This other tree service did not do their customer a good service because they did not take the time to even call me or to explain to their customer, that leaves may be there one day and gone in 30 days because of lawn service cleanup. A NOTE JUST TO GIVE SOME MORE INSIGHT ABOUT THE OTHER TREE COMPANY: A tree company is not allowed to tell a customer they are from Texas A&M in an attempt to improve their credibility. That is illegal. All tree companies receive training from Texas A&M associates, and know that you cannot represent yourself as from Texas A&M. I have had four previous customers in the last year tell me that this company comes to their house to give estimates and leaves them with impression they are from Texas A&M. This tree man told my customer they are from Texas A&M. This tree man told the complainant they are from Texas A&M. They are prohibited from masquerading as someone from Texas A&M. This is fraudulent. NOTE: I have been licensed 27 years longer than this company and noticed in the past they have this tendency to misrepresent themselves as from Texas A&M. TREE COMPANIES ARE NOT FROM TEXAS A&M. WE TAKE COURSES/TRAINING AT TEXAS A&M. WHEN SIX CUSTOMERS ARE LEFT WITH THIS IMPRESSION, YOU KNOW THIS IS INTENTIONAL MISREPRESENTATION.
