Mr. Williams and his crew were wonderful. First (and i appreciate this more and more as i get older) he called me back, set and appointment for bid and kept it! 2nd, he gave me credentials i had asked for such as Oak Wilt Certification and bonding and liability insurance too. 3rd, while the price was high, he assured i would be happy as he would not 'crank up a chain saw and clear cut my branches'. I wanted health of tree, shade on home (without incumbrance) and beauty. I wanted my trees sculpted and left natural as God intended. Its like going to a plastic surgeon with a cut on your face - you could go just get 'stitched up' or you could have it beautifully sutured without scaring, maintaining health! He did it and i was wowed by the expertise of Dennis and Tarrel who would tirelessly the first day in temps to 92 and in temps of 44 and raining the second day -' blue norther' rolled in but it didnt phase them!!! You will pay less with others, but you will be cut and scalped, not trimmed and pruned. One final thing - they cleaned my yard better than it was when they arrived and only cranked up their chipper/shredder once all day so as not to disturb he neighbors.

Tree trimming and removal was done in one day. Stump grinding was done on the second day. Company paint the cuts. Left the front and backyard clean on the first and second day. This company has also taken care of my trees (treat for fungus, if necessary) for the last three years and has done a good job at it. The company also trimmed trees (around $600.00) for my mother-in-law on the second day they were at my place and she was also happy with how Don and his crew structured the two live oaks in the front and the two red oaks in the backyard..
Description of Work: Trimmed and raised canopy of 3 Red Oaks, also trimmed 3 Crape Myrtles, a Live Oak, a purple leaf plum tree, and a wild, mutabilis rose (from 10"x 7" to manageable 4' x 4'). Removed (and grind stump) of three, almost dead blue point junipers. Cut to the ground a weeping willow and 2 mulberry trees.

Big Country was one of four bidders at about $1000. He make furious notes as I tried to explain what i wanted. He was much more focused on telling me of his credentials and determining what HE wanted to do. His wife accompanied him and frequently tried to restate information to him that he did not seem to hear from me. Style was overtly pompous! His bid was the highest of four bids. The job was done very well by another contractor for $250. I would not use him or recommend his services.

Description of Work: My neighbor had used them to evaluate for Oak Wilt. They came in and confirmed Oak Wilt and started a pricey treatment immediately and told my neighbor that my trees had Oak Wilt also and I should contact them about getting them treated or removed. I called the Oak Wilt Specialists for a second opinion. They were great - they spent quite a bit of time looking at leaves and told me that it is NOT easy to diagnose Oak Wilt and felt that my trees and my neighbors did NOT have it. A gentlemen from Big Country Trees called me and was VERY arrogant, practically yelling at me on the phone telling me he's been diagnosing Oak Wilt for 30 years (or misdiagnosing as I suggested) and a kindergartner could identify that my trees and my neighbors had it and that our trees absolutely had oak wilt. I found doing my own research that this statement was completely inaccurate and that diagnosing Oak Wilt should take multiple visits and careful evaluation and followup. The Oak Wilt specialists suggested waiting 30 days before proceeding with any treatment. They returned in 30 days and told me my trees and my neighbors did NOT have Oak Wilt.

Response from Big Country Trees
Providing some basic information about my services - I have had two complaints on Angie’s List since being licensed in 1974. To date, I have performed over 45,000 on site, physical consultations and written two books on tree problems. We have a BBB A+ rating, bonded, and I am a Certified Arborist. The first complaint was when I had a tire blow out and damaged my RV in Plainview, Texas, on my way home from vacation and could not make a work appointment. The customer complained about that even though, as he wrote and admitted on the complaint, he was called about 2.5 hours in advance and told I could not make it. I have had two complaints out of 45,000 consultations in 38 years. My second complaint since 1974 is as follows: To begin with, oak wilt leaves were found in my customer’s yard. That is not disputed by my customer. I was not there to do an oak wilt survey as complainant states. She is trying to add to her “SPIN.” My call sheet says I was called about aphids and the Bradford pear in the back yard with fire blight, (near where the oak wilt leaves were found). Four people saw the oak wilt leaves. I COULD JUST STOP HERE, BUT FEEL THE NEED TO WRITE TO SHOW WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO A TREE SERVICE, WHEN A COMPLAINANT PUTS AN UNTRUE SPIN ON SOMETHING. The complainant was wrongly misinformed about this situation from the other tree company, making her angry with me and she wanted to show all, that I was wrong. The complainant thought she would just rip me apart over the phone and to my customer and she did do a rant on me. Then she decided to do more and put this on Angie’s List. Her tree man did her a disservice by not giving her complete truthful information as explained below. My customer told me that he saw the oak wilt leaves and that “He was satisfied at seeing the oak wilt leaves and SATISFIED WITH the $275.00 plus tax treatment for oak wilt for 3 trees.” I wonder where the complainant got the idea, as she wrote on the complaint, that “I did a pricey treatment”. She just added something that was never discussed; she just wanted to rant and made this up. This is an example of the complainant saying untrue things about things she has no idea about. PUTTING A SPIN ON THIS IN AN ATTEMPT TO BELITTLE ME. I never told the complainant or anyone there were oak wilt leaves in the neighbor’s yard as I did not enter her yard and I can’t see over a 6’ wooden fence. Complainant’s oak wilt expert, spent quite a bit of time looking in her yard for oak wilt, finding none, then trying to make it look like I was wrong. My customer told complainant there are oak wilt leaves on the ground (IN MY CUSTOMER’S YARD) under the complainant’s tree, which hangs over the fence FROM THE NEIGHBOR’S SIDE. Live Oak trees with active Oak Wilt have very distinct leaf pattern changes. The recent leaves will usually be green with brown or dark yellow leaf veins. It may still be attached to the tree or under the tree on the ground. A leaf can also blow under other trees not affected with wilt, confusing oak wilt source locations. A leaf that has been on the ground for months will usually be a dead looking brown with darker brown veins as the chlorophyll disappears after 30-40 days. Lawns are typically mowed weekly and areas are blown clean of leaves and you do not find many Oak Wilt leaves. I just happened to be in this yard between lawn mowings on a requested annual tree service call, when my wife Janet, came up to me and said there were Oak Wilt leaves under the neighbor’s tree that extends over the fence into my customer’s yard. (My wife has been in training for years and she recognizes oak wilt.) I looked and there were over 20 oak wilt leaves on the ground under this tree, and at least three oak wilt leaves still attached to this tree. That is OAK WILT and nothing changes that FACT. The oak wilt leaves still attached to her tree showed which tree the oak wilt leaves came from. When you have a customer present and he is looking at the oak wilt leaves on ground then WHAT CAN I SAY. IT IS WHAT IT IS. It doesn’t matter how much SPIN a neighbor puts out; it doesn’t change the facts. The complainant told me during her rant that I did not know what an oak wilt leaf looks like. I told her a kindergarten student could tell the difference. She was doing a rant on me, so I bluntly told her some facts and she calls me arrogant for defending myself. Her tree man did not do her a good service, as he could have called me or he could have told his customer that oak wilt leaves could be there for a few days and gone the next day after lawn service was done. He left her confused without information, so she just ranted about things her tree man misrepresented to her about me. I CAN’T ALLOW SOMEONE TO BELITTLE ME TO MY CUSTOMER AND TELL ME THAT I AM BEING UNTRUTHFUL, WHEN THE FACTS AND MY CUSTOMER’S KNOWLEDGE, SHOW OTHERWISE. I REALLY FEEL HER TREE SERVICE FAILED TO EDUCATE HER ON WHAT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED. THIS MAY HELP EXPLAIN THE DIFFERENCE: In an expensive neighborhood as this is, lawns are mowed weekly or bi-weekly. One tree man may be there before a lawn is mowed and easily find oak wilt leaves; then another tree man comes by after a yard is mowed and blown clean and he most likely will never find an oak wilt leaf. WHY? Lawn mowers chop up and mulch leaves leaving no evidence, except maybe an oak wilt leaf still in the tree. They fall quickly and you don’t usually find many oak wilt leaves in trees. I have been back to this yard and noticed that the area where the oak wilt leaves were, is on the right rear side of the yard. This entire right back side of the yard is covered with landscape river rock. The yard service blows all debris and leaves off this area when they mow. There are usually no leaves left in this area. If a tree man went to this yard between mowing, he might find a few leaves in this rock garden. If he returned a week later, no leaves would be there. Oak wilt leaves do not just fall all the time. They may only appear several times a year for a week or so. I usually find most in April and May. According to complainant, the other tree man waited 30 days to enter my customer’s yard, and by then the lawn mowing companies had mowed at least twice and blown away all leaves on the ground. Thirty days later, you would have no idea whether oak wilt leaves were on the ground, 30 days before. Her tree man should have told her that the yard had been mowed at least twice and leaves blown clear at least twice, since I found oak wilt leaves 30 days earlier and that is the reason oak wilt leaves were no longer there. REMEMBER, FOUR PEOPLE SAW OAK WILT LEAVES ON THE GROUND. REMEMBER, I HAVE DONE OVER 45,000 ON SITE CONSULTATIONS SINCE 1974. MANY TREE COMPANIES JUST DON’T HAVE ENOUGH COMMON SENSE TO COMPREHEND WHY THERE CAN BE DISAGREEMENTS BECAUSE OF THE CONSULTATIONS BEING ON DIFFERENT DAYS. 30 DAYS LATER, YARD CONDITIONS CHANGE AND THE OAK WILT LEAVES ARE NOT ALWAYS PRESENT BECAUSE OF CIRCUMSTANCES SUCH AS BEING MULCHED OR BLOWN AWAY BY LAWN MOWING SERVICES. This other tree service did not do their customer a good service because they did not take the time to even call me or to explain to their customer, that leaves may be there one day and gone in 30 days because of lawn service cleanup. A NOTE JUST TO GIVE SOME MORE INSIGHT ABOUT THE OTHER TREE COMPANY: A tree company is not allowed to tell a customer they are from Texas A&M in an attempt to improve their credibility. That is illegal. All tree companies receive training from Texas A&M associates, and know that you cannot represent yourself as from Texas A&M. I have had four previous customers in the last year tell me that this company comes to their house to give estimates and leaves them with impression they are from Texas A&M. This tree man told my customer they are from Texas A&M. This tree man told the complainant they are from Texas A&M. They are prohibited from masquerading as someone from Texas A&M. This is fraudulent. NOTE: I have been licensed 27 years longer than this company and noticed in the past they have this tendency to misrepresent themselves as from Texas A&M. TREE COMPANIES ARE NOT FROM TEXAS A&M. WE TAKE COURSES/TRAINING AT TEXAS A&M. WHEN SIX CUSTOMERS ARE LEFT WITH THIS IMPRESSION, YOU KNOW THIS IS INTENTIONAL MISREPRESENTATION.

No shows for work agreed to at a specific time and date. Do not trust this company at its word.
Description of Work: Company offered bid on palm tree removal. Date and time and price agreed to. Two hours prior to arrival, company called and asked to reschedule for unknown reason. I said, no, because I'd made too many arrangements to cover pool and be home for the removal. Lady on the phone said she'd call the boss and get back to us. She never got back to us, and, in spite of many phone calls to the office throughout the day, no one ever answered the phone and no one ever called us back. Needless to say, they never showed up to do the work, and I got someone else to do the job for 1/3 the cost of their bid. I was not out any money unless charges are billed to my card anyway, in which case I'll file fraud charges. However, I want to warn others not to take this company's word for anything. They are not reliable,. nor do they have any consideration for the proper way to treat their customers.

Response from Big Country Trees
I have performed over 44,000 on site consultations and have been licensed to work on sick trees since 1974. Thirty-eight years later, I get my first complaint on Angie’s List and this complaint is unfounded. Thirty-eight years is a long time to not get a complaint on Angie’s List. This member has been a long time customer for about 10 years and called us to take down a dead palm tree on his day off. It had been dead for months and was not an emergency. The appointment to do the job was 1:00 pm on a Monday. In the past, I have always worked with him to do jobs on his days off. There was no problem with him in the past; he liked my work and the way I worked with him in the past to do jobs on his day off. If he didn’t trust me and like my work, he wouldn’t keep calling me to do his tree work for about 10 years. On the way home from my vacation, my RV had a front tire blow out destroying parts of the under carriage and floor, with parts of the tire entering the interior. I had timed coming home from vacation to do this job. As this accident set me back a day getting new tires and some needed repairs on a weekend, I had Stacie (one of my estimators) call this customer. Stacie was out of town also over the weekend and went to the office Monday morning to get his phone number and did call the customer at about 10:30 a.m., two and a half hours before our appointment. The customer states on the complaint that Stacie called him two hours prior to the 1:00 p.m. appointment and told him that the job had to be rescheduled. The customer states on the complaint, “I said no because I’d made too many arrangements.” This is the point where I feel that the customer (doctor) began to overreact. He refused to be rescheduled and called at least 3 times, leaving messages demanding I show up anyway and do the job. He called about 1:30 p.m. and asked why I had not shown up to do the job. He called around 3:00 p.m. asking where I was and he wanted me to still do the job that day. Around 5:00 p.m., he called and said he was getting someone else to do the job. He is a doctor and they reschedule people many times, and I can’t believe a patient would react as he has. I believe his reaction was unreasonable and demanding. On this Monday after Stacie called him to reschedule, she then left both my business cell phones for me at the office so I would have them upon my return that night. Stacie kept my business cell phones while I was gone as the Colorado National Park we stayed in had no cell phone service and I felt it was better to leave my phones with Stacie who has worked as a estimator for over 12 years. This is why there was no one to answer the phones that evening, so he just kept leaving offensive, angry messages. Stacie was also the one that ran this estimate, contracted this job and set up the 1:00 appointment we are discussing. Upon arriving home late, I listened to the multiple messages from this irate customer demanding I show up to do the job even though he was told the job must be rescheduled. On the last message he did say that he was getting someone else to do the job. When he said this, there was no reason to try to call and set up a new time. It is easy to understand what happened here. I had an appointment, he was called actually 2 ½ hours prior to rescheduled. He refused to be rescheduled as he had made too many other arrangements. To this point business was done properly. A contractor has an emergency and asks to be rescheduled and a customer refuses to be rescheduled and still demands at least 3 times that you show up that day anyway. You would assume that when a customer had been told the job must be reschedule that he would accept that and not make at least 3 angry phone calls demanding the job be done that day anyway. I never miss appointments for jobs and did work for this person several times in the last 10 years. The customer’s reactions after being told the job was not going to be done that day surprised me. It took 38 years for my first and only Angie’s List complaint, and I have made over 44,000 on site consultations since 1974. I am not going to demean this customer as he did me. I know, as a doctor, he must be busy and was disappointed when he was told the job was going to have to be done a different day.
