Hired Mike, beginning of March 2012, per recommendation from others. Started job 2 weeks late. Performed the demo and all was looking well. Mike would come in and stay in the bathroom all day during the first couple of weeks. Some days completing a few things, other days, nothing, we aren't sure what he was doing in there. After a few weeks, he asked for a draw, we gave him one. We were under the impression that he was a craftsman and were willing to put up with the slow work, expecting an above average job. After 2 months, the shower was built in, new tub installed (which he promised to do for free for our "patience"). A few electrical outlets had been added. (which was supposed to be in the original price as it was part of our request). At the 2 month mark, he asked for another draw. We went down the list of items and found he did not have a draw coming as few of the items we had already paid for were not complete. We gave him 500.00. He was beginning to come in less and less and when he did, he didn't stay for long, very little getting done. Always late coming in and had some kind of excuse. He used a few of them twice, I guess he forgot he used them the first time). As the next 2 months went by (we were told 3-4 weeks to complete job, we are now in to month 3), he repeatedly would say, "it's a matter of days". My wife went out of town for a week and he promised an almost complete bathroom when she returned. During that time he installed a few tiles and that was it. By know we are becoming very frustrated and asking daily about when things will be done, he repeatedly said " a few days". When we got to the 3 month mark, he was given a week to finish, of course he did not. At this time he communicated that he had underbid the job and was having to do other work to pay for it and that we wouldn't give him a draw. At that time he had been paid 300.00 more than the items he had either finished or was in progress, we were not going to pay any more until the items we paid for were finished. Next he brought up a story that the original plan was for him to hire our son while he supervised and that's why he quoted a low price. At no time was this ever talked about. He asked if he could hire him as a helper on this job and we told him before anything was done that would be okay, but he is working for someone that is busy right now and probably would not be available. Next he started telling us what a favor he was doing us for sticking to his quoted price. After we had let him go on for a couple more weeks after giving him a deadline twice. He came back with the underbidding story and said we wouldn't give him a draw. He had not asked for a draw in 2 months. Again he said all he needed was a few days to finish and again a few days go by and he showed up once for a few hours, nothing had been done. By this point he would only stop by a couple of times a week and did very little. At this point he said he could not continue without 1,000.00 more dollars. The only thing left was the vanity which was about 1,200.00, vanity had not been delivered yet. He came in the day before, ran some caulking around the shower and left an invoice for extras that had never been discussed. One extra was for work already included in the original bid, another was for installing the bathtub that he said he would not charge us for and a few others were things he never told us ahead would be extra. His quote said all extras would be presented in writing ahead of time. After agreeing to some of the extras, it was determined that he had 143.00 coming, once the unfinished items were done. He said he had to have 700.00 to continue. He told us it was very unusual to go down the bid and consider what has been done to calculate a draw. It's very unusual not to do that, I'm a commercial contractor, this isn't new to me. This was a thursday, I told him if he delivered the vanity so we could see it had been built, we would give him the 700.00 provided the job was finished by the end of the next week, again he said it was only a few days to finish. He agreed and said he would have the vanity delivered by Tuesday, which indicated that it had not been built as he previously said. Tuesday came around and I made the first call to him at 7:30am to tell him I had some work issues and that I needed to work out with him when he was coming so I could get him his check. I had to be at the airport at 11:30. Called him 4 more times up until about 9:30, no response, no return of my voicemail, the final voicemail was to tell him that we would no longer be lied to and that he was officially fired from the job. As I was sealing the tile (which he had not done), i really got a good look at the sloppy amateur work he did. I expected better. Very sloppy, lots of mortar and grout in the corners where he though no one would see it. I had to scrape for hours to get it presentable. Very disappointed in the work. Run, do not walk away from this guy. The most unprofessional contractor I've ever dealt with. He got away with a few hundred dollars for the unfinished work, but hopefully others will know now to stay away. He is a liar and the quality of work is very average to below average. He left us to finish thing he did not complete and to dress up sloppy work.

Mark returned my call and stopped by to give an estimate for installing a new French door. His prices were very good, and he told me he would be back to do the other things I wanted done. The installation was scheduled on the spot and Mark was well prepared. He never came back to finish the other jobs and never returned my calls.
Description of Work: Mark came to my house and took out my back patio door and replaced it with a new French door.
