The contractor performed all work on my elderly father's house without having provided him with a written estimate. At the beginning of the work, my father stated that the estimate he received was a range, between $6-7K. As tends to happen when everything is undocumented, this morphed into a final total of $9K. My father was advised during the course of work that it would be necessary to drill deeper than planned and that this would cost extra, per foot and per peer. This increased cost was not quantified. As my father did not request, and was not provided with a written estimate describing the number of peers or depth, we have no way of knowing the legitimacy of this extra cost. Since the work was just performed, we can't assess the quality of workmanship.Following the conclusion of work and my learning about the increased cost and lack of documentation, I called and talked with Mr. Baird, who reiterated that costs increased because they had to drill deeper.Get a written estimate, always! Additionally, if this estimate is not detailed enough for you, amend it to your satisfaction (including number, depth, style, make, and etc. of each peer). And, also have potential extra costs clearly defined before work begins.

The owner, Bill Baird, did a thorough walk-through of the home, inside and out, explained our options inclinding pricing options, and allowed us to make the final decision(s) without pressure. He estimated a date when his crew could begin, but his crew arrived several days early. One of his main workers has been with him for around 20 years and understands as much about complex foundation issues as he does. Our yard underwent the normal amount of digging as can be expected when piers are installed, yet we were pleased to see the holes filled smoothly and the ground nice and level all around the areas they worked. There was a minor issue with a hidden wire being cut (unbeknownst to his crew OR to us...previous owner left a wire buried *without* any form of conduit protection!?), and even though that wire should have never been there (much less without conduit over it), he paid to have it repaired at his cost without hesitation. Our doors used to shift within their frames on a monthly bases; sometimes the bathroom door would stick, other times the closet door or the bedroom door. Several months later we've had our first experience with this house where all the doors open and shut the way they should and they haven't moved in the slightest. Mr. Baird is an old-school Texan who simply believes in doing the job right the first time and not ripping people off while he's at it. His price couldn't be beat, and several months later our doors are still opening and shutting the way they were intended. Suffice to say we're as pleased as can be with this experience.
