"2 hours agoNew-Edit Delete *Short story is here and long story is below - JLC did a patio remodel project and put artificial turf in my backyard. The turf was used from scrap jobs - my patio is 16 feet wide and turf comes in 15 foot rolls so I should have one seam. Instead, JLC used patches of turf and didn't even glue the seams together. I have so many seams in my patio and rectangle and square patches were used. They did not use any weed barrier and now I have over 175+ weeds growing through in 6 weeks. They also did not use a compactor so it is now unlevel, they used untreated 2x4's for the boundary instead of non-degradable material - so now it will rot much sooner. They did not put my fence back up properly as it is not bolted back into place and now it is won't go back into place, they didn't use quality infill for a proper install, they used untreated wood for the tree ring, the tree ring is off center and unlevel, and the edges of the turf are not secured properly. I spent 3,800+ on this project and now will spend 3,700+ to repair it because JLC will not repair it nor would I trust them to. The owner actually admitted to me that he doesn't do turf jobs. I contacted Josh Salmon, the owner of JLC, through Thumbtack in early June 2024 after he responded to an artificial turf project for my patio, among other small items I requested (a fence, a covering around my tree...). On June 18th and 19th of 2024, Miguel, his business partner completed the project. Prior to paying for the project, I contacted Josh through Thumbtack to make sure that it was normal to pay Miguel directly instead of through his effect (since the official bid came from JLC contractors). He said that this was normal, and that Miguel was his business partner. After the project was completed, I left a good review because Miguel said he would come back and make all of the repairs that he needed to - staining the fence, redoing the ring around the tree because it looked awful, adding more stone, etc. Four weeks after the project was completed, I had weeds growing everywhere (there are over 150 spots now). Miguel promised to come the next day and he did not - in fact, he would not respond to texts or calls so I called Josh. Josh said he would make sure the repairs were completed, but soon got very short and rude with me over text. Then he claimed that his company didn't do the job, Miguel is not his business partner (even though he is listed as his business partner on jlccontractors.com), and he never gave me an official bid. All of which are false. Then he blocked me and will no longer do repairs - this was after we had a heated conversation and both of us used profanity. Josh then blocked me, and I found another number for his company online after researching. The number turned out to be his mother, and I only called her once. He is now accusing me of harassing his family and also using racial slurs, which I never have. All of my communication with Josh is through text, so he is definitely unable to prove that accusation."

Unless you have extensive experience in construction work, remodeling a basement is best left to a professional. There are several tasks associated with this project that require exact precision, including:
Replacing insulation
Replacing carpet or other flooring
Adding heating and cooling
Adjusting or adding walls and doors
Altering or adding plumbing elements
If any of these elements is done incorrectly, it could severely impact the quality of your basement remodel and be dangerous. Changing a basement often comes with code safety requirements, like egress windows and proper ventilation. Therefore, leaving it up to a professional is often the best decision.
The cost to finish a basement is $18,400 for the average homeowner. However, this cost could be as little as $2,800 or as much as $34,500, depending on the basement size and the materials needed. If your basement is already outfitted with electrical and plumbing, expect the cost to fall on the lower end.
For example, the drywall cost for this project averages around $1,750, but other features, like hiring a plumber, cost between $45 and $200 per hour.
The cost to remodel a basement is between $12,100 and $33,400 for the average homeowner. The price you pay can be as little as $3,500 or as much as $50,200, depending on the size and condition of your basement and the type of remodel you're doing.
If you're doing a simple project like adding a home office to your basement, you can expect to pay anywhere from $500 to $3,000. However, if you're adding a bathroom, which is an extensive project, you can expect to pay between $6,600 to $16,500.
Since DIYing a basement remodel isn't typically advised, there are some ways that you can still save money on this project without putting yourself in danger. Some ways to save money on a basement remodel include:
Painting walls yourself versus including in the cost of the remodel
Installing light fixtures yourself
Choosing prefabricated fixtures, like cabinets, over custom ones
Choosing a budget-friendly flooring option, like laminate or vinyl flooring, and add rugs where necessary
Although homeowners often use the terms basement remodeling and basement finishing interchangeably, they are quite different terms.
Finishing a basement is the process of taking a basement space that is not habitable and adding elements to make it usable. This includes adding plumbing, flooring, and insulation.
Remodeling a basement means taking an already existing finished basement and changing it, often by adding or removing walls, adding plumbing, or changing the existing flooring.
