Description of Work: White Rock Landscaping replaced a large area of grass in my front yard. Some of it wasn't the best quality, and quickly died, even though we followed their care instructions perfectly. Most of the grass he planted was dead by the following spring. For the work done, and since the grass did not last, I thought it was a waste of money.

Description of Work: I had a very good experience with this landscaping company, and was so pleased by the crew who did the work they did in the front, that I had them come back and do additional work in our back. Both projects look really good. The front project was the planting of bermuda grass on a steep hill in our front yard. Gary's area estimate was exactly mine, and the price was fair. The crew did a really perfect job of leveling the hill and the area looks better than we thought it would. There was one issue with some damage to the drip irrigation in the parkway--we knew that was a potential problem because the system had already been installed. I called Gary out on two occassions, and he came out immediately and fixed the problem. The second project was the leveling of our backyard and planting jasmine, and again, the crew did a really great job of leveling the yard before starting; the price was fair; and they came in and did the job quickly and as we requested. Both front and backyard plantings are all alive after the summer with no dead spots, and very healthly. I think I recall reading a review from someone who had a problem with Gary. He's no prom queen, but I found him very easy to speak directly with and I have no complaints about his bids or the work performed, and he was very prompt in responding to issues and fixed them entirely. I would definitely hire this crew if I needed yard leveling. If you hire them I would ask for their primary crew.

+ 0 moreIt's been acceptable, they came out and did a good job, I had a little bit of a problem with follow-up because I thought the lawn needed to be rolled but they did an acceptable job and I was satisfied with it. All they did was plant sod in my front yard and they had a little bit of extra time and so they did some trimming in the backyard but it was not very long.
Description of Work: I used White Rock Landscaping, they planted a new sod in my front yard.

+ -1 moreGuy was a Jerk at first and only got worse. I spoke to him on Tuesday afternoon in regards to a job planned for Saturday. He was a jerk and unprofessional but I decided to let it go and told him I would call him the next day fir the go a head. The next day I called as promised and told him that I was going to use the company installing the sprinkler instead because their quote was less and if any issue came up with the sprinklers then they could fix it. I didn't have to call him but I did as a courtesy to him. Once he heard I was using another company he became an increasingly bigger Jerk. I was simply taking to him and he decided to tell me how I was going to get screwed ( in much harsher words than that) and kept yelling about how he didn't care and that he would just play golf. I told him what I thought of his unprofessional attitude and he semi threatened me and really went off. Your playing with fire if you use this guy....Unless everything happens to go perfect.
Description of Work: Got an estimate and planned to use him to install grass.

+ 0 moreI was referred to this contractor by Miller Grass and hired them to replace the sod in a backyard. In addition, I asked them to patch an area with new sod in the front yard. The grass (St. Augustine) didn't look to good upon installation, however, I was told that it would improve. We followed the installers instructions regarding a watering schedule, mowing restrictions, etc.. After several weeks, I had a lawn specialist look at the grass and was told that it had a fungus and would have to be replaced. Also, the patch of sod in the front yard was the wrong type of grass (the grass is Zoysia and they installed St. Augustine) and had the same fungus. I tried to reach Gary at least five times and also contacted Miller Grass (they were of no help either). I had no other alternative than to hire another company and pay the expense of replacing everything that White Rock Landscaping installed. They have not had the decency to even return a phone call!
Description of Work: Replacing St. Augustine sod in a backyard area and patching an area with new sod in a front yard.

+ -1 moreWhite Rock Landscape was very responsive to my questions, provided an estimate exactly for the work I wanted. The only reason I used another contractor was because of their inexperience with a particular type of stone. I would defintely ask them to bid a job in the future.
Description of Work: I wanted to install a new patio in my back yard including a large platform off of the outside door for my dog.

+ -1 moreWonderful. Not only was the work first class, but we also received education on proper care and treatment of the new sod, which was very helpful. We are completely satisfied. The owner stayed on the job along with the crew to make sure every detail was perfectly in place; they cleaned up afterwards and were very efficient and professional. Gary is very responsive to the customer and we will definitely use this company again.
Description of Work: New Sod for several patches and strips in the yard where shrubs had been removed and french drains had been installed in the front and back yards. Also prepared and graded the soil where necessary.

+ -1 moreI called Gary on a Monday, and he came by the same day to give me an estimate. He promised to do the work the next day, which he did, and did it well. He also pointed out that I had a problem with a leak in a sprinkler system. He gave me a name an number of someone who could help fix it, but only after I specifically asked if he knew someone who could do the repair. He didn't try to sell me his or anyone else's services to fix it. Overall it was a good experience, and I will call him again next time. The price was lower than the last contractor who did this, with equal quality.
Description of Work: Trimmed trees and shrubs, and cleared weeds out of flower beds, and hauled off the waste.

I spoke with him on a Monday and he told me to contact him later in the week to set up an appointment on Saturday or Sunday. I called Gary on Friday to set up an appointment for the following day, on Saturday. He asked me whether "twoish" was OK, and I told him that I needed to pin down a specific time, so we agreed on 2:00 p.m. Gary never showed up at my house and he never bothered to call with an explanation or an apology as to why he never showed up.
Description of Work: They did not perform any services because Gary never even showed up at the appointed time to give me a bid.

+ -1 moreI called Gary. He showed up on time 2 hours later to give me an estimate. We made an appointment for him to do the work 3 days later. He showed up on time with 2 helpers and got right to work. Gary was professional and wanted to do the work exactly as I specified. They completed the work in 5 hours and I paid him the price we'd agreed on. I was very pleased with the entire job.
Description of Work: Removed old edging around 70 Ft. long flower bed. Installed new edging. Weeded the bed then planted 6 flats of petunias and begonias then spread 10 bags of mulch. He also did some trimming of hedges and weed eating in the back yard to clean up an overgrown flower bed. He did all this in about 5 hours and he charged $600. for everything. It was a very fair price for the work done. I was happy.

+ -1 moreI called on Monday before Christmas to see if the yard could be leveled and sod placed prior to Christmas day (I needed the yard ready for a trampoline delivery for the kids from Santa). Gary went by the house, quoted an estimate, located the grass, tilled and grated a very un-level yard, and installed the sod all within 48 hours. He even made sure the sprinkler system and heads still worked after the sod was put in place and then called to make sure I was happy with the work. Fabulous!

Description of Work: He tilled up our front yard, cleaned out the bed and resodded the area beautifully. He weeded all of our beds front and back and laid in mulch. He was thoroughly and timely. We will use him again.

+ -1 moreThis is the second time I've called Gary Islett to do some "piecemeal" yard work. Gary's manner can be a bit brusque, but he does show up when he promises and his crew are fast, neat, and thorough.
Description of Work: In May, 2007 this work was done in preparation for a playground set installation. They cleaned out a 22'x22' section of backyard including removing debris/rocks/bricks, pulling weeds and ivy, and leveling out the area.

He brought samples to make sure that they met my satisfaction. Work was completed in a timely fashion except for mother nature's interruptions. The stone worker was polite and careful and was able to speak reasonable English which was helpful when he was left by himself to work. He was very skilled. The sod was cut where necessary to fit. Gary gave me very precise instructions on watering and the lawn has flourished.

This required moving some rocks from around our pond and prepping the area where we wanted the flagstone laid. For the new sod they had to remove the existing mostly dead sod and weeds and then they rotor-tilled the area before laying the new sod in place. For the new patio which was placed next to an existing pond after laying a layer of sand, the flagstone had to be pieced together and fit next to existing rocks rimming the pond. Decomposed granite was then put between the stones. The patio was then edged with a row of new sod to make the transition smooth from the existing ground.

By his own admission he is not a landscaped "designer", but he and his crew were very knowledgeable and efficient at executing a plan that I had created, but could not do myself. This was yard "grunt" work at its finest. There was one small area that the crew failed to clean up very well (left debris from digging), but otherwise, the work was performed well and as I had asked. Although Gary did not provide a specific, detailed, written estimate, we did discuss these piecemeal projects in detail and I understood his pricing (per foot on drainage, and per hour on other stuff), and the total was in line with what I expected to get the work done. If you know exactly what you want to have done in your landscape and you need help getting it done, Gary is a great person to call.
Description of Work: Installed two separate French drains (50' total) to correct for drainage issues in a flat backyard; re-made flagstone pathway/entry to back patio of house to include drainage, correct for slope, and make larger (including addition of matched new stone);obtained and installed 30' of rock/gravel in a pathway (side of house);built a new 10'x 5' bed and moved four medium boxwood plants from elsewhere in the yard to the new bed;moved couple other miscellaneous shrubs.
