The salesman stopped by and we looked at the roof, I already knew the insurance company was going to pay for a new roof, less my deductible. We went over the "agreement/proposal," which was really a contract, although the salesman went out of his way to say it was only a proposal. What I didn't like was the fact that this was the only one of six roofing contractors that gave me a bid that required something the others didn't. According to the proposal, "The first (1st) check received from the insurance company pertaining to your claim is due and payable, in its entirety, to TEXAS ROOFING CONTRACTORS GROUP upon delivery of materials to the job site." None of the other companies that came by had anything like that in their paperwork; it rubbed me wrong because I had other damage to my home, besides the roof, that was going to be included in that first check. Friends told me to beware of roofing companies that wanted money before the job was completed. The other thing that botherd me is when I told the owner, who had come back with the salesman on a second visit, that his bid was one of two high bids and thanks for stopping by. He asked me how much higher he was than the other bids, I told him 15%-18% higher; he got out his calculator and amazingly reduced his bid by almost $3000 on the spot. Now I not saying those are good, bad or indifferent business practices; as with any service or contract: do your research, ask friends and neighbors, read ALL the print on the contract/proposal/agreement (front AND back), ask LOTS of questions, negotiate a fair price and keep an eye on the work as it is being performed.
