+ 8 moreSee above for details. Some of the contractor work took longer than planned, part of it relates to getting paint colors & textures to the homeowner's satisfaction, as well as unexpected construction issues--moving studs in the ceiling for expanded HVAC, original incorrect (shortcuts) construction in sewer and plumbing. A no. of retailers ordered using wrong stock nos. or incorrectly (ordered parts over the phone but didn't back it up with a required computer-generated order form. This kept us waiting for the correct tub to come in, a chipped shower door to be replaced, tile trim to be located that matched the coordinating larger sized tiles. These are examples to me of the good USA losing it's position of prominence in providing consumer goods-- a lot of it related to human error, & usually people had to be pressed to make good on a quality product at the agreed upon price. Sharon isn't a pushover, as she knows how things should be done & how she would like things to be if it were her own home!
Description of Work: The first phase of remodeling my 35+ year old home included resurfacing & painting the ceiling in the breakfast room with a gold wash over a medium green paint color, and a suede-look green on the walls. In the kitchen, appliances were installed with minor cabinet remodeling necessary to accommodate the different sizes of new appliances. Cabinetry was sanded & painted, granite & tile backsplash added, custom island built, customized pull-out drawers in installed in the pantry & some cabinets, lazy-susan shelving in place of the trash compactor, lights changed out. Then the family room paneled walls and cabinets were repainted, drawer pulls/hardware changed, modern flush-mount lighting installed, furniture/space re-configuration performed. During this time, Sharon decorated various rooms in the house for Christmas primarily with decorations we already owned. Everything looked festive, elegant in some areas, & amazing! The next phase of decorating was to re-do the master bath. The original design included 2 separate vanity areas with small walk-in closets, with a larger tiled room in between that held the toilet & a combination shower/tub with sliding doors. There were no air vents in the vanity areas, & there was unused space in the toilet/bath area, so functionality was low relative to the "footprint" of the master bath/closet area. The bathroom was taken down to the studs, with the 3 separate areas being turned into 1 large area & with taking in some extra space from the adjacent garage, the closets were expanded nicely. Sharon maxed out the amount of storage with built-in cabinets floor to ceiling on both sides of the 2 vanity areas (which were in the same room, separated by the entry door into the bath from the bedroom), designed a jacuzzi tub area with columns framing each side & a lighted stained glass window (actually a hanging, there is no exterior window in the bathroom) over the tub. The shower is clear glass & frameless, with smooth stones on the floor, & an outdoor feel with the natural color granite walls & built in shelves for the shampoos, soaps, etc. The granite floor & countertops coordinated with the shower color, the cabinets contrasted with a darker mahogany stain. Custom built cabinets were added for storage in the bedroom & in both closets, with top & bottom built-in armoire looking hanging clothes racks, and shelves both between the top & bottom as well as on top of the cabinets. Lots of flush-mount lighting in the clothes "cabinets" & in the ceiling keep everything viewable in the closets so all the space is usable. Most of the doors are sliding pockets doors with a patterned glass with mahogany stained wood frame, & one mirrored door for full-length viewing. The bathroom is amazing, it seems like I'm walking into a luxury hotel bath! Sharon designed & had built out a scheme of wall & ceiling shelving in the garage, also peg boards & hooks on the wall. We will soon be able to get both cars in the garage, & release some of the storage units we've been renting! All told, Sharon & her contractors & subs remodeled the A/C, plumbing, & electrical systems, re-insulated floors & ceilings, moved or eliminated walls, installed cabinets, shelving, pocket doors, painted or textured walls, doors & ceilings, replaced windows, and outdoor lighting for security and entrance/drive up appeal. She is familiar with all aspects of residential construction, both interior & exterior, and has previously worked as a home inspector for an insurance co., so she's aware of how things need to be done or retro-fitted to make things not only operable, but also sustainable (no cutting corners, or leaving trim or details undone). Home decorating is one of Sharon's greatest contributions, as she has an eye and understanding of different living/furniture styles, blending old & new, staging/decorating with the homeowner's existing furniture & knick-knacks, and decorating on a budget! Other skills include oil & acrylic painting, arts & crafts & wreath-making.
