Made appointment for Saturday afternoon (4-6pm). Tech arrived a bit after 4. He told me my door was beyond repair and "dangerous". He offered to completely replace the door, which would take about a week, for $1200. He said the springs were "rusted through", (they had a little surface rust but were actually in good condition), and cable reels were "antique and very dangerous". He offered to do a "band-aid repair" to get the door closed, but not usable, for about $400. He charged me $35 for coming out to give me an "estimate". Fortunately, I went with my gut feeling and got a second opinion. I wish I had checked Angie's List first. After checking on Angie's List, I got several replies from companies with "A" rating, all of whom told me the door could be repaired for significantly less than OGD quoted. The one I chose was at my house within an hour of speaking with him on the phone. He had the door back up, aligned, lubricated and tested for safety, working perfectly within an hour, and only charged $175. (He installed the new cables I had purchased for $8 at Home Depot). Very satisfied! Includes 90 day warranty. (This was ABrooks Garage Door & Repair.) BTW, OGD shows the Angie's List logo, Yelp logo and BBB logo. Angie's List shows "F" rating. BBB shows "A+", but has 2.25 stars in reviews, many with similar stories to mine.
Description of Work: Garage door off track, cable un-spooled. other cable frayed.

We had them come out on Sunday to look at a garage door opener that wasn't working; it stalled out after about 2 feet. Upon arrival the tech went to look at the garage door and decide we needed new springs. He said we probably needed new rollers also. He thought the garage door opener may need to be replaced based on the sound it was making. At that time I requested that he replace the other garage door opener also. He said he would throw in replacing the rollers on the other garage door. All this was going to be about $3300 and they would order the parts on Monday but wouldn't be able to do the work until Thursday. We told them okay and set the appointment for Friday. On Monday (the next day) we called the office around 8-9am to tell them to stop the order; we wanted to get another estimate. At that time we were told that was fine and to let them know when/if we wanted to start it back. We also said we wanted to keep the Friday appointment but we would let them know before COB if we were going to go on with it. We got another garage door company to come out and they said it was just that the opener was to small for the garage door - their cost was $700. I asked him about the spring and the other company said there wasn't anything wrong with the spring. So we called this company and told them we were going with another company and we wanted our deposit back. At that time we were told that they weren't sure how to do that since he was new but he would have the office manager contact us the next day. Two days later the office manager contacted us wanting to know why we were going with another company. We told him we were going to do what needed to be done to fix the problem. His reply was to say that we were going for the cheap fix. We ended up getting the credit card company involved and did get our refund back but it was a bit of a hassle.
