About us

REPAIRING THINGS is the main focus of my business. I have been repairing things since early on, when in my father's business we often had to find quick solutions to broken and non-functioning things, especially when no repair help was close by. That's where I learned the basics of the many practical skills that allow me today to "quick-fix" a multitude of things. The "quick" stands for the fact that I work fast, yet never inaccurately or sloppy. I often come up with solutions where others don't, and I take special pride in doing nice, clean jobs. I also ALWAYS clean up after my job is finished (which is not necessarily very common...). I'm a friendly and respectful person and get very well along with people. Obviously, I have lots of excellent references to prove it. Home owners frequently leave me with a key to their house, so I can do work in their absence. Typically, I come by and take a look at the job(s) you have and then discuss the details with you and will then give you a general price idea. But normally I work strictly BY THE HOUR, and ONLY if a job picture is clear and definite enough, I may give you a firm price. (Please understand that in the home repair business there can be all kinds of unforeseen issues that often make it difficult to determine an exact price). I usually work all by myself, but in certain situations I may bring one or two other persons which are compatible with me - and your environment - in every respect. To cover my trip time, I charge $30 extra for my first work hour within a 12 mile radius from my home base. If my commute exceeds 12 miles, the trip charge will increase on a pro-rated scale. Please TEXT ME, or give me a call under 214-734-6293 or email me at quickfixjay@yahoo.com to discuss your home repair needs. I'm looking forward to meeting with you! He came out and gave me an estimate in the $500 range based on an hourly rate. I should have known that it was trouble when he insisted on doing the power washing a couple days before it was going to rain. I tried pointing out to him that he wouldn't be able to stain the deck because of the threat of weather and he acted like I was crazy for taking such things into consideration. He came out and power washed the deck and I think he used too high a pressure for the wood because there was splintering all over. At that point he asked me to pay him for the work that had been done ($400+) and said it would be probably be another $1000 to finish. Total bait-and-switch. I decided to get someone else to come out and refinish the deck because I couldn't trust this guy. The new guy confirmed that he had done a bad job and in fact CAUSED damage to the deck.
Description of Work: I hired him to power wash and refinish my deck.

Response from Mr QuickFix
I am quite astonished about this negative and inaccurate review and want to respond as follows: The customer has a large, winding fence area and a deck with several integrated wooden benches, both of which consisted of considerably WEATHERED and, at the time, rather DIRTY wood. The fence is the property's upper barrier to a creek that runs in a rock formation about 50 feet straight below. The customer wanted the fence washed from both sides, which required tough and outright acrobatic action on its backside, with my colleague having to work slowly and very carefully, suspended by ropes and a full body harness. The very dirty condition of the wood required longer cleaning time than initially expected. I told the customer clearly and upfront that this job would be done on my HOURLY RATE BASIS, which he agreed to, and that it was difficult to exactly estimate the cost because of the complexity of the job. I only guessed a number for this power washing job alone ($500) but AT NO TIME said it was a FIRM PRICE. (A price for the STAINING JOB was not at all addressed at this time, even though it would have been done on the same hourly basis). Therefore, there is absolutely no "bait and switch" involved. My pronouncements about this job were unambiguous. This is a truly malicious and wrong accusation! The customer had wanted the job done within 3 weeks, but the unstable weather conditions with much rain all the time made that rather difficult. When several warm and sunny days were in the forecast I let him know I was sending my colleague over for the washing and HOPEFULLY also the staining on the following days. But then rain was announced again (yet with only a 20% chance). I informed the customer that this was a fairly low chance for rain and we should try to push through. (Indeed, there was no rain during the next 2 days!). But he declined. Of course, the wood staining could have been done at any other time later during dry weather. I was just trying to stay within my given time frame. Based on this, we proceeded with the power washing and I received payment for the hours my colleague and I had spent on this job. The customer was present all the time and was able to witness our continuous work. He did not complain in any way about the price at that time, only now 3 weeks later. It is inexplicable to me how and why he was so surprised about the final price for this portion of the job. Based on our initial agreement, he was charged exactly for the hours and the running cost of the equipment that had accrued. The work was done well and orderly. The wood damage that he claims can only have happened in those areas that had been too long exposed to sun and rain without the proper protection of the wood. He said NOTHING about it after we had finished the job. Power washing is of course being done under HIGH PRESSURE, and light damage can occur based on the condition of the wood. Apparently, the customer is not aware of this fact. I would like for him to seriously consider all the points I've made.

Jay helped us with a variety of odd jobs - patching holes in the wall & repainting, installing an outlet in our garage, re-caulking a shower/sink, fixing the trim around a window where we removed plantation shutters, and installing address numbers in our EXTREMELY hard brick exterior. We called Jay and he texted us almost immediately and was able to come by our house to give us an estimate the same day. He came out to our house with a colleague to perform the work two days later and did a very thorough and professional job. He was extremely honest and fair about payment, and was alone in our house for most of the day. He cleaned up after he finished, it was as if he was never there. We would ABSOLUTELY recommend Jay and look forward to working with him again in the future. Highly recommend!!!!

While the replacement of the light fixture and door ring bell were uneventful, the installation of the 82 RSF of marbel tile went really bad. This is by far the worst work I have ever seen, but pictures speak more than word. When I complained about the cost and quality, Jay told me that I was "too ciritcal". I paid 900 USD that same day and mentioned how unhappy I was with the work and that I would never use his services again. Later that night I recevied a text from him telling me that I use my words "loosley" and that I should have said something while they were still doing the installation (and continue paying 130 USD per hour to correct the mess). Obviously, from where I was standing, I couldn't see that they even left 2 broken tiles.
Description of Work: Work: (1) Replace a ligth fixture, (2) Replace a door ring bell and (3) Install 82 RSF of marble tiles (provided by owner). Time to execute: Items 1 and 2 took approx. 2.5 Hrs. with 1 person; Item 3 took approx. 6.5 Hrs with 2 people. Note: If I wanted to include the grout, I needed to pay extra 130 Dlls.

Response from Mr QuickFix
I had already done a job for this customer about two years ago which she was very happy with (but chose not to give me a review here). Sadly, I must say that the customer is making several false or untrue statements in this review, and she clouds the real picture of what happened in this job situation. Upon my VERY PUNCTUAL arrival on 12-30-16 at her immaculate condo, the customer first proudly showed me her brand new kitchen and volunteered info on how much cheaper she had been able to get it done, even though she told me of trouble with the contractors whom she had forced to redo several major items related to that job. In context of the tile job which my colleague and I were going to do this day (adding two rows of tiles on top of an existing tile section in an upstairs shower area), she mentioned to my colleague that she had previously run off two other contractors, one of whom actually had to take down the tiles again that he had just installed. So much for the pre-history of what was going to be our job. While I worked on several electrical items, my colleague began very carefully removing a row of tile trim edges, making sure he would not damage the existing tiles below. This job alone took more than 2 hours to do. Next, we installed new strips of decorative tile inserts (supplied by customer) between the old and new tiles. These strips were uneven from piece to piece so that the new tiles above them also slightly varied in height. As we proceeded we found out that of the uppermost row of tiles which were per customer's assertion "just going to fit&", the majority had to be cut shorter because the ceiling was uneven. For EVERY necessary tile cut we had to go a long way downstairs to an open air court where the tile cutter was located. This effort alone was VERY TIME CONSUMING and was not taken into account by customer and was also not known by us ahead of time. Additionally, the walls were found to be quite uneven (per customer request, we tiled straight on the existing painted wall surface - not on clean Hardie backer board), which caused the rows to be slightly off from the lower, existing tiles. I have done and seen many tile jobs and know from experience that slight variations between tiles are totally common and that grout lines can be off by a millimeter or less, AS IT IS THE CASE in the job we did here. The customer's complaint about this job being "by far the worst" she had ever seen is totally EXAGGERATED. Especially in an add-on job to existing tiles on a very uneven wall surface it is really difficult to exactly match the lines with the adjacent tiles. Plus, we did not leave any broken tile at the end of our job. The grouting job was supposed to be done the next day, as is common because of the required tile adhesive drying time. But the most astonishing part is that - during our tiling activity - the customer came upstairs several times and expressed her delight about "how good it looks". She gave ABSOLUTELY NO INDICATION about anything not being to her satisfaction! The "quality problem" only arose after the job was finished and the PAYMENT was being addressed. I had previously mentioned to the customer by phone the hourly pay rate which she had FULLY ACCEPTED! So, the pricing could not have been a big surprise to her since she witnessed us actively working till the very end and could estimate the final billing amount by the hours we had spent on the job right before her eyes. Had I not heard the customer bragging about how she had dealt with other contractors before me, I would be concerned about her review. She is truly overly critical and very hard to satisfy, demanding super quality for the lowest price possible. She also does not accept any explanations about the reason for certain variations, and she made false statements about the real time that went into this tiling project. As I have stated before, I never do shoddy work. Indeed, in every case I do my very best to make a customer happy with every job I do. That is also what I/we did here in this case.

I wish I could give Jay more than an "A". This man truly deserves the super award he was given. I have used SO many different people and have have had to deal with spending more money to fix what THEY did. I am happy to have found a man who seriously can repair a laundry list of items, and he does not do them half-a**ed. I appreciated that he spoke English and communicated with me and answered my questions- while he was working. Excellent and knowledgable multi-tasker. I had to purchase a new ceiling fan- which he will install too. I wanted to make sure that I was getting the right one, I sent him a picture, the response was lightning fast. He is responsive, responsible and courteous. Although I know giving him a glowing review will probably increase his business and time may become an issue to fix more things in my house, I would be being selfish. I am so grateful to having met you! I'll provide another review after the ceilings fans are put in to let you know how it goes. Thank you Jay! Nicole
Description of Work: My garbage disposal was making a funny sound, my dishwasher wasn't draining, my exhaust fans in the bathroom were not working properly, my outlet died (or so I thought) - it needed a firm hand to re-set and the light on my ceiling fan broke and I was using a flashlight to find my way around. (Not fond of lamps).

Jay was quick to respond to my inquiry and stopped by to assess the job. During the walk through he said it would be a full day job. After that he said he was thinking towards the end of the following week, but would coordinate. Friday comes and here and he is at the door with no coordination. He was very rude to my nanny complaining that other workers were parked in his way. Its tough to coordinate a job site when the workers don't bother to tell you they are coming. He charged me for 7 hours labor to punch 5 holes in the brick. No lights, no plugs and this was less than half of the list that he said would take a full day. He did not sweep or even attempt to cleanup the rubble below the holes. After that, he was ready to call it day and wanted payment. Nothing was installed. Funny thing is he was only at the house for 6.5 hours and I watched him sitting on my exterior stairs talking on the phone for more than half an hour at least once, not sure if it occurred more.
Description of Work: Needed 4 exterior lights installed, including seating the bases within the brickwork, and 2 electric plugs seated in the bricks as well. There was much more specified, but he did not perform that work.

Response from Mr QuickFix
Out of the 42 customer reviews I have received this entire year, of which 41 were straight A's (I received a total of 280 all-time A's, and 4 consecutive Super Service Awards), this is the only negative one. In this context, I cannot stress enough how much of an effort I make with every customer to do my work for them as perfectly and responsibly as possible. Obviously, my review record is proof of that. In this present case, I have to regretfully say that the customer was either unable or unwilling to see the great efforts I made for him. In fact, practically every statement he makes about my work and involvement at his property is a complete falsehood and brought forth, as it appears, with malice. To wit: 1. I arrived at the customer's property at 9:45am on the second (Friday) of two prospective days we had agreed on for my coming. He had sent me a list of items to be worked on, which I was ready to work through. 2. I identified myself to a young house nanny whom I had not met before and said I was going to begin with my work on the entrance door. After she checked with the owner by phone I was told to proceed. This job would have included taking the door completely off the frame for about 3/4 hours. 3. But at this exact time, other contractors were doing very dusty and noisy work on the concrete walkway in front of the property, so that - in agreement with the nanny - it was decided to wait with the door and rather go and do other work on the garage behind the house. There was no lack of coordination, but rather an unforeseen circumstance that required a change of plans. The customer's claim to the contrary is untrue. 4. In order to get all my tools, supplies and ladders moved to the backyard I asked the nanny about the plumbers (who had their truck parked in the driveway) if she could contact them and ask if they would let me get through. There was absolutely no stress or discourtesy involved, and the plumbers let me get through without any problem. I actually developed a very friendly relationship with them as they worked close to me. Also the nanny, whom I met several times after, was very friendly and never gave me any indication of her displeasure, or any rudeness on my part. So, this is a complete lie. 5. The rest of the time I spent for this customer was entirely spent in removing 5 existing outdoor electric boxes that were top-mounted on 2 separate garage walls, 8 foot up, and replacing them with flush-mounted boxes that had to be chiseled into the walls. 6. After going to a hardware store to purchase the boxes and beginning with the wall cutting work, it became clear that the existing bricks were of an extremely hard consistency that required enormous efforts to create the holes for the boxes. I drilled 10 to 12 holes in a circle for each box and then hand-chiseled the rest of the material out. Two of my high-quality Bosch masonry drill bits got completely worn out in the process, which is not common under normal circumstances. This work took much longer than foreseen, and it was physically very tasking. I was actually exhausted! 7. After 7.25 hours of work, including store-run time and a brief break, I finally got all boxes firmly installed and wired up. The customer came out and - for the first time - showed me the lights he wanted installed. He asked me when I would be able to do this and was displeased when I said on the following Monday. 8. He then said he did not want me back and would pay me for the day. He actually belittled my work and did not believe me when I told him how very hard the brick was and how much effort it had taken me to get this task done. He smiled arrogantly and dismissed my explanations. I made him aware that this was quite offensive to me. 9. Since I had just finished the job and was still packing up my tools, I had not been able to clean up the area. Asked about it, I responded I would gladly do it if the customer had a broom available for me. He proceeded to get one and started sweeping himself. When I again offered doing it, he said he only wanted his receipt and I should leave. So, his claim of me not wanting to clean up is another lie! 10. The bad experience for both parties in this situation is the result of the customer not making the effort to inquire how the job went and why certain things were not done as expected. He ignorantly assumed certain things from his own perspective and wrongly and unjustly judged me and now gives me this bad review. This customer has a serious attitude problem, and I feel absolutely no guilt or wrongdoing in my actions. But I surely am unhappy that things ended this way.

Jay was punctual and very personable. He worked efficiently and completely cleaned the area before he left. I could not have hoped for a better result. I have plans to call him again soon for some additional repairs that require his special touch.
Description of Work: Jay repaired a rotten wood window. This window had to be custom remade, and he remade it on-site. I had been told before that it couldn't be repaired. Not so, if you have someone with the creativity and patience of Jay. Jay, also, repaired several handles on window louvers on a porch. These window louvers were 65 years old, and several handles did not work properly or were broken off completely. He repaired each problem, using very creative solutions. Many times I had been told these could not be repaired. He repaired a cabinet door that would not close because of warping, again a creative solution.

I was so grateful that the owner of Mr. Quick Fix, Jay van Hulst, was kind enough to take this small but rather complicated job on for me. I could tell from his website that he does incredible work and takes pride in doing the work right. Based on email pictures I sent to him he quoted me $125 as approximate cost if there were no complications. This work was being done for a rental property and he was very professional in communicating with the renter, arrived on time as he said he would, very professionally dressed and his business vehicle had his business logo on it. Superb service and repairs at more than reasonable price. It is extremely difficult these days to find someone who does quality work and cares about doing the right thing for the customer at a reasonable price. I cannot say enough about how much I appreciated the quality of work done. My renter was thrilled with Jay!!! We will be using Jay for any and all repairs and highly recommend him! Wonderful experience. Note: My work request was an exception to Jay's primary service location, specific to the Lakewood area.
Description of Work: Needed help with repairing interior door frame and door jammed due to foundation problems. This door provided access to the garage and could NOT even be pulled or pushed open. The door was stuck and twisted into the door frame and the door frame cracked. This was a great security concern because without being able to close the interior door properly the security system would not work. And, the only way to get into the garage and to the car was to go outside the house and walk around to the back of the garage and use the garage opener, which was a very inconvenient and frustrating circumstance.

Jay did an excellent job. He came out and looked at the steps into the backyard and asked questions about total weight expected on ramp, etc. He built a sturdy attractive ramp that very closely followed the pic we had sent. Our dog easily uses this as it is wide enough (2 feet) and is long enough to not have a steep incline (10 feet).

We will be using him for any and all future jobs. If you're trying to figure out who to use as a handyman, Jay is your guy. A+!

This is the first opportunity I've had for Jay to do work at my house. It was a great experience from beginning to end. I left a message for Jay late in the afternoon describing some of the work needing done and he replied by text a few hours later letting me know he could come over in the morning. (I benefitted from someone else's schedule change because he is typically booked out much longer.) Jay arrived promptly the next morning. He walked around with me to review the issues and developed the plan to fix them. For the kitchen plumbing, we agreed that it would be best to replace all the valves that he could while he was "under the hood" (since we had the water off, etc.) so we could minimize future issues. He took off to buy the parts and returned promptly and got to work. He did the work quickly and with care. When it was time to turn the water back on to test the integrity of the soldering work, there were no leaks. It was done right the first time. He tested the faucet thoroughly, reconnected the drains and disposal, and cleaned up any residual mess. You can tell when someone cuts corners; the work is messy and convoluted and they always seem rushed to finish up and leave. Not so in this case. The plumbing is in much better shape than before and looks as it would if I had done it myself (but actually had the plumbing skills to do so). It's clear that Jay takes his time to do things right without taking any more time than necessary. The wall switch was next. Jay made quick work of that. It took him no more than a few minutes to wrap that up. The gate work is pending for when Jay has a little more time. When he looked it over that morning, we talked through some options, and Jay let me know that it's a bit more of an involved operation and he would not be able to work on it until he had a larger block of time available. That was fine with me as it's not an emergency and I want to be sure he has the time to work on it without rushing. He also mentioned that he has a peer with welding expertise that he will confer with to make sure we are coming up with the best solution possible for it. Based on my experience this morning I highly recommend Jay. He's polite, a good listener and observer, and I appreciate that he takes time to assess the situation before diving into the work. He worked very efficiently and cleanly and all for a reasonable price. I look forward to having him fix my gate and will be calling him for other needs going forward.
Description of Work: I needed help with three things: 1) Replace aged valves/pipes under the kitchen sink. I just replaced my kitchen faucet and turning the valves off for installation and then back on for use was too much for them. The cold water valve developed a steady leak. 2) Modifying a light switch so that it no longer controlled an electrical outlet. I wanted the outlet on all the time. 3) Support my automatic driveway gate so it closes better. The ground has shifted over time and the supporting posts lean slightly and the gate no longer closes flush.

Jay was excellent. He did several projects for me as I prepared to sell my home. The restain of the front door turned out particularly nice. I wish I'd had that done sooner. The house is sold and I will definitely call Jay again for projects in the new house.

I was so impressed with how promptly both Jay (handyman) and Chris (AC repair) responded, first of all. Jay came by the same day I contacted him, and quickly went about getting supplies and installing the lock I needed, with extra reinforcement. He knows his stuff and will point you in the right direction if you don't quite know what you need. I will definitely be using him for other things I need done! Both Jay and Chris are very busy but really care about solving problems for people, and especially with my AC, I had problems. I didn't know I had one until Jay went up to the attic to look at a possible issue and noticed the water in the pan, thank goodness. He referred me to Chris who came out the next day. It turned out that my entire brand new unit was installed incorrectly by the previous owners and needed to be rehung to allow the water to flow in the right direction. He also noted that my unit had no float switch that would automatically shut the unit off to prevent flooding, so wasn't up to code. He said if his guys installed like that he'd fire them on the spot. He came back with his guys (who struck me as very neat and professional) the next day and they went to work fixing the problem. While fixing those issues, Chris found that there was actually water seeping through the internal drip pan onto the insulation over the motor, that it had somehow been cracked during installation - so he ordered the part immediately and as soon as it was, they came back on a Monday night at 6:30pm to save my AC from shorting out. This was a huge headache of a job - like taking an engine apart and putting it back together in a hot, cramped attic, but Chris and his team were all friendly smiles and professional focus. Needless to say, I dodged quite a bullet, and I feel very lucky that I found both Jay and Chris! They are both highly skilled and genuinely nice guys.
