About us

REPAIRING THINGS is the main focus of my business. I have been repairing things since early on, when in my father's business we often had to find quick solutions to broken and non-functioning things, especially when no repair help was close by. That's where I learned the basics of the many practical skills that allow me today to "quick-fix" a multitude of things. The "quick" stands for the fact that I work fast, yet never inaccurately or sloppy. I often come up with solutions where others don't, and I take special pride in doing nice, clean jobs. I also ALWAYS clean up after my job is finished (which is not necessarily very common...). I'm a friendly and respectful person and get very well along with people. Obviously, I have lots of excellent references to prove it. Home owners frequently leave me with a key to their house, so I can do work in their absence. Typically, I come by and take a look at the job(s) you have and then discuss the details with you and will then give you a general price idea. But normally I work strictly BY THE HOUR, and ONLY if a job picture is clear and definite enough, I may give you a firm price. (Please understand that in the home repair business there can be all kinds of unforeseen issues that often make it difficult to determine an exact price). I usually work all by myself, but in certain situations I may bring one or two other persons which are compatible with me - and your environment - in every respect. To cover my trip time, I charge $30 extra for my first work hour within a 12 mile radius from my home base. If my commute exceeds 12 miles, the trip charge will increase on a pro-rated scale. Please TEXT ME, or give me a call under 214-734-6293 or email me at quickfixjay@yahoo.com to discuss your home repair needs. I'm looking forward to meeting with you! Jay was awesome. I had a entry door that would not close and stay shut, which was an obvious concern for safety reasons. No other handymen could get to me for several days to weeks, but Jay pulled through for me and came over right away. He also went to Home Depot for materials and returned to finish the job. He was very honest, friendly and professional. The price was great too! I will definitely be using Mr. QuixFix (Jay) again soon!

The job (as always), was very professional; completed on time and turned out better than I expected because of what I was asking of him in repairing the fence but not distriburing my ivy. Mr. Van Hulst is very talented and I no longer ask for an exact estimate because I know his hourly rate and I also know that he works very fast, but never sacrifices quality. This saves him time in not having to give a written bid. The other thing that is important to me is he is confortable talking with me as well as my husband and many home contractors do not want to discuss details with the "wife".
Description of Work: Repaired a rather large fence in the back yard. I did not want to replace the fence at this time and he came up with a repair plan that worked. He worked around, between and under our wonderful ivy covered fence which makes our back yard look lush and private. When the boards age, you will never know they were repaired. He also did some work on our outside lights.

If your looking for a handyman look no further. Jay is professional, responsive and very knowledgeable. We had a need for someone to do those minor repairs that is hard to find a qualified and willing individual to take care of. However don't be mislead by this because I'm quite confident that he can take on much more involved and complex jobs. Lastly, all his work is of the highest quality and standards. Glad we found him here and will definitely be using him for all our future needs.

Jay was exactly as advertised. Smart, friendly, honest and dependable. His prices are very fair and his work is high quality. Jay saved me a lot of money over what other Fence companies wanted to charge because he was able to use a hydraulic jack to straighten the steel post. Other's wanted to completely dig up and reset posts charging me hundreds more. His technique worked perfectly and the fence should be good for several more years. I would recommend Mr.Quick Fix to anyone and will definitely give him a call for my next home repair job.
Description of Work: Mr.Quick Fix did some major repair work on my cedar wood fence. A number of the steel posts needed straightening and boards needed to be re-nailed.

Jay answered his phone the first time I called, I described examples of what I needed done, and we made tentative arrangements for him to come the following week. We confirmed the date and time via text message. Jay was on time and went right to work. He could not complete the whole list the first day, so we made arrangements for him to return. As he worked, I discovered new items to add to the to-do list, which he took on without a problem. The complete list of jobs were completed over the course of 3 days. The painting and tile work took the longest but were performed with utmost care. When Jay was going to be late one morning, he texted and called to let me know. I appreciated the proactive communication. My husband and I were pleased with the results and we would definitely hire him again.

The job is always done on time and correctly.
Description of Work: Mr. Van Hulst has done several things for me over the last year and I have been very happy with everything he has done. The last thing he did was to repair my vent-a-hood which required him to get on top of my house and clean the exhaust pipe and filter. I will always call him first for anything that I need repaired. I have also recommended him to several of my family and friends and everyone has been very happy with his work. He is always the gentlemen and I would not mind him working in my house alone. I know the job will be done correctly everytime. Carolyn

Description of Work: Jay was great. He did several odd jobs for me. He replaced a tile on the front steps, hung an outdoor tv, did some regrouting, hung a large mirror and fixed a drawer face. Every repair was efficiently and professionally. You can't even tell there was a repair! I will use him in the future.

Mr. van Hulst was prompt, professional, and courteous. Most of the repairs were simple, and he went about doing the work efficiently. The doorbell was a bit more challenging, but he was up to the task. Given how prompt Mr. van Hulst was, his courteous manner and general sense of competence, I would not hesitate in calling him next time we have small jobs around the house that need attention.

.It went very well. Jay was on time and did an excellent job. He went "above and beyond" what was absolutely necessary. For example, he bought a decorative quarter round that adds to the appearance. He also custom made a little shelf to go under the window by the sink. He is very thorough. The job was very nicely done. I will definitely call him again.
Description of Work: I called Jay and we set an appointment. I have had new counter tops installed and I needed the quarter round replaced because the other was damaged in the counter installation. There were a few other "odds and ends" jobs involving carpentry.

Jay was on time and ready to work. He was extremely professional in every way. The work was done beyond my satsifaction and I will use him again I am sure. I was very comfortable with Jay in and out of my home and he took time to provide me with advice for my home repair needs. I needed that because I only know what I want to have at the end, no idea about what all the options are. Jay know this and was extremely helpful in making decisions. He never even sat down or slowed down for a minute, worked solid an entire day and the work is fabulous!
Description of Work: He installed two sets of security lights in front and back; fixed a window unit so it is blocked off on both sides and constructed a board to put in the top of the window for security. He also took away a wooden ramp that had been previously installed. I am already working on my list of other things for him to return and take care of.

When Jay arrived, he offered to go get the materials required for the job, which we were paying for. We offered to go with him, but he seemed very nice in offering to take care of it for us. Since we are both sight-impaired, we thought that was a nice gesture, and since he was highly rated, we didn't hesitate in accepting his seemingly kind offer. He was then gone for what seemed to be a very long time. When he returned, we asked for a copy of the receipt for the materials, and he refused to give it to us, stating that he needed it for his taxes. I even called the IRS - they said that since we purchased the materials he couldn't use it. After going back and forth several times, we finally got the receipt. Once he returned from purchasing the materials, he tightened the screws on a light fixture in the dining room, hung one piece of sheet rock in the bathroom (at least 1-2 more still need to be hung and texturinzed), and left a big hole in the drywall that we had to fill in. He hung the door in the bathoom and put the doorknob in. He replaced the sink. He then spent another 30 minutes telling us what other work items needed to be done (all on our dime). When he left, he took the texturizing materials that we had paid for. He also put all of his trash into the box that the sink came out of (instead of the trash can provided), and left it there for us to dispose of. The nearest disposal site is over a mile and a half away, and since we can't drive, this is something that is more than inconvenient. When we called to ask about the texturizing material that he took without permission, he finally admitted to taking it, and did return it. When we asked about cleaning up his mess, he said he would - for a fee. He also said that the initial quote of $900 was invalid, and that any further work would be $89 for the first hour, and $55 for every hour after. We felt like he really tried to take advantage of us.
Description of Work: We hired Jay to put new sheet rock in the bathroom, and then texture that sheetrock. We also needed a door hung for the bedroom closet, as well as another door in the hallway. We included replacing a security light outside, along with three porch posts. He was also to replace a wall between the dining room and kitchen. Finally, he was to replace the kitchen sink and faucet, including hooking up the sprayer and disposal. The quote for all of the work $900, not including materials.

Response from Mr QuickFix
This is a case where I seemingly could not do anything right, no matter how I tried. I rarely encounter such customers, but this is such a case. Responding with depth and detail to the list of false accusations and misconstrued “facts” against me would require too much space here. So, I will give only a few points: 1. {Member name removed}, whom I never personally met (she lives in Austin) was not my customer, but rather a{Member name removed} – her boyfriend. He is known in the neighborhood as a big trouble maker. According to his own words he had lots of serious run-ins with neighbors, often with police having to be called. One neighbor who spoke to me when I left the site actually was quite surprised to hear that I had gotten paid by him. Several previous workmen had supposedly not received their money. So much for an initial impression. 2. The dilapidated condition of the house should have been another warning sign for me, but since the customer was nearly blind, I understood and wanted to help him get the house ready for renting. 3. I paid all materials with MY OWN credit card. That’s why I asked for the original store receipt. I offered customer a final company receipt that would include these materials, which is normal. 4. The texturing material I supposedly “stole” was a small bucket of $7 value, which was 2/3 empty. I always carry the same type of material and had simply mistaken it to be mine. I promptly returned it. 5. The purchase of ALL materials at Home Depot took time because several items had to be cleared with customer over the phone, in several calls. The customer cannot drive by himself, and I had no space in my truck to take him with me. 6. The work itself revealed several unforeseen difficulties (crooked & shoddy walls, missing floor, rotted wood in many places etc.), and customer often engaged me in lengthy conversations about all kinds of things, both of which extended my work time. 7. I put some small construction trash with customer’s permission into an empty box. It would not have fit into his small trash container. It was never an issue, and no further requests as to its removal were made of me. 8. By weekend, when the first payment came due, it became clear that there were a few items that would not be possible to finish under the original pricing agreement due to more time used for the work already done. Mr. Landeen did not understand that several things that were either changed or added or requested by him “on the side” would increase cost or count as work time. 9. In this context, I mentioned to him my hourly payment structure which would apply after the initially assessed labor value of $900 had been reached. He then said he did not want me to proceed with the job and paid me for the work time rendered so far. 10. I had great sympathy for this customer in his nearly blind state and accommodated him in every way possible. He asked me for, and I offered him, advice on how to improve the house for renting it out in areas he had not noticed that they were in need of repairs. I treated him with great kindness and tried to be helpful in every way, so that the abrupt turn against me really astonished me then - and does now.

Overall, Jay is professional. He will meet with you to see what needs to be done and provide you his price and time. He will call you before he comes to your house. We gave him a key and he went to work.
Description of Work: Jay did an amazing job fixing a wood rotted patio door. He tighten the gutters and installed leaf guards. Since I forgot to buy the leaf guards, he got them for me. He also put door stops on two doors and fixed the holes in the walls from the door handle. I asked if he could take out a melted lightbulb from a ceiling fan and he did it! The most thankful job he completed was installing a new garage weather strip and painting it to match the garage since I ran into the garage.

I sent a text to Jay on Sunday, 1/13/13 about a leaky faucet. We had a replacement faucet from Teters available to him. Jay responded on Monday, 1/14 in the morning by phone and text. He offered to come by the same day after he completed a previous job. He arrived around 6p and thought the leak was pretty bad so started working on it. The fix was not an easy one as he had to replace the faucet from the other side of the wall through the kitchen cabinets. I think our old faucets were original to our 1954 home. He also needed to make a trip to Home Depot for additional parts. He completed the job and had to stay until around 10p to get it done. I was very impressed with his perseverence, professionalism and prompt response to my inquiry. I hope to use him again in the future. Thanks, Jay!

I have used many (MANY) handymen over time, and although I was always grateful for what they were able to help me with, I never before felt like I had found "My Guy". Mr. van Hulst is that guy. He was immediately responsive to my initial email, and was totally cool with keeping up by text message. He has a friendly and dignified manner, but doesn't take himself too seriously. As far as his work goes, I cannot say enough nice things. Everything he did is high-quality and I feel like I can trust him completely to take care of things the right way. I really appreciate that he takes the time to listen to what your real need is -- there were a couple of times that I asked for something and he directed me a different idea that was a better choice. And even if you don't want to do it, he's cool with whatever you want...it's just that he's really smart and is always thinking of a creative solution. My initial project was most of a day, and the cost I listed reflects additional hours that I subsequently hired him. He's a keeper.
Description of Work: We just moved into a new house and had a laundry-list of "fixes" and repairs that needed to be done so I can't even begin to think back on all Mr. van Hulst did for me. Some of the things were: making the tricky front door handle operate smoothly, moving a ceiling fan box to a different location, replacing the blades on another fan, installing various light fixtures, repairing drywall (including in the ceiling), creatively reconfiguring a teenie-tiny closet to accommodate more clothes, fixing plumbing drips, recaulking in the bath and kitchen...oh, yeah -- the gate to the alley has a metal security frame that stuck like crazy. The former homeowner had even left a crowbar and instructions on how to get the gate open! Mr. van Hulst fixed this so that it closes and swings perfectly. I know there's more.

Assisted building a 6x8 greenhouse (from a kit). Fixed a sagging fence gate. Rehung a front door and replaced lock hardware and added door insulation. Installed 2 30" bi-fold doors at untility room area. Very creative adding a towel bar in a tiled shower area. Corrected some ceiling drywall damage caused by water leak. Replumbed the kitchen sink to correct a leak. There's other incidental issues he fixed... too many to list everything. He was here on 10/27th, and I hired his service again 11/3rd to finish up the items not finished from the prior weekend, plus I added more work. He was very efficient, very timely performing each of the tasks he tackled. ABSOLTLUTELY I will hire him again. Actually, if he wasn't already booked up I'd have him back this coming Saturday to deal with still more repairs/fixes I need to have dealt with.

I have put off getting these chores done because I was not looking forward to spending hours in my house alone, with a stranger. Jay, instantly put me at ease. He is professional and kind and he worked efficiently to get all of my chores completed in a timely manner. We had a couple of unexpected issues with my tv cord being too short and me wanting my cable box mounted and hidden behind the tv. Jay was patient and was able to find a solution for both issues. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and I'm already making my list for next time. I would recommend him for any home repairs, without hesitation!
