I needed a small bathroom painted. I was told $258- $458. When the painter/handyman arrived the price went up to $758. He said because I needed one coat of white paint on the ceiling and a different color on the walls, the job could not be done in one day. I thanked him for coming and told him that price was too high. This is a small bathroom. I cannot not afford $758. He then told me there was a $78 charge for him coming out. When I balked at the charge, he called his supervisor. His supervisor called me. The supervisor was quite indignant and said, "We don't work for free." I said I wasn't asking him to work for free. Stay within the price range I was quoted and I would have him do the job. He refused to stay within the price range quoted. Even though $458 was high for a small bathroom, I would have paid it. I cannot do the job myself because of a disability. Although the $78 call out fee was waived, the supervisor, expressed how much I had inconvenienced them but because he did not tell me about the fee he would waive it. They made me sign an invoice showing they had waived the fee before the man would leave my house. I feel the supervisor's attitude was uncalled for because, yes, you can paint the ceiling and the walls in one day. Realistically in a few hours. It does not take a day for the ceiling paint to dry enough for you to , at least, start the walls. You can do the corner between ceiling and wall after only a couple of hours. I believe the supervisor was trying to guilt me into paying the $758. I signed the invoice but was not given a copy of it. I am worried they will try and charge me money because he would not put a zero in the total column. The only way he would leave was for me to sign the invoice. Now that I think about it, I should not have signed the invoice. I feel I was bullied into signing.
Description of Work: Quoted me a price, on the phone, to paint a small bathroom. When painter/handyman arrived I was told he could not do the job in one day and the price went up.

Someone named Haley came and provided a written estimate for $437.50. The proposal said, "Upon acceptance of this proposal, contractor will provide a fixed price proposal" so I asked if this meant that the price would go up once I accepted it (which obviously makes no sense--how can they raise a price once acceptance has been made? Who would ever sign acceptance with the possibility of having the cost jacked-up after the fact?). He told me that what was in the estimate would be the price for the work so we arranged to get it done. At some point, I remember the worker was late (but I can't remember if I was timely notified or if I had to call them to find out what was happening), and the work took more hours than the estimate allowed. That did not bother me at all except that I suspected that I would be charged more. In the end, I was charged more than the estimate, which is the reason I gave a "C" for price. I think a professional should know 1. know how long a job should take and what the job is worth, 2. should stand-by what they say unless it is made clear that the price is subject to change OR it can be shown that there was something unknowable at the time the estimate was given, or 3. should discuss any additional charges ahead of time. Additionally, the estimate said debris would be "hauled away" to "keep the work area safe" which I assumed meant they would take all debris away, so I was disappointed to find the debris stacked behind my back fence in the alley. I get bulky waste cleaned up only once/month and we are not allowed to store it back there any longer than 5 days prior to the pick-up. I had to call the company and say it could not be left out there since the pick-up was at least a couple of weeks away. It was picked-up the next day. All in all, the work seems to have been done well, so I don't have any major complaints about it except I'm not sure the gutter doesn't still leak). I understand companies need to be paid what a job is worth, but as a consumer, I need to be able to count on what I am told because I am choosing someone to work with based partially (maybe predominantly) on price. I don't think it's right that I be left to guess whether a job will be completed for the price quoted, and in the end, to have it cost more. I wouldn't rave about the experience but I don't want to ruin them either. I'd like to see good and competent work at a fair price with an estimate I can count on. As to whether I would use them again, I selected "Yes" because I wouldn't rule it out but I would probably look-around first.
Description of Work: Remove water damaged/dry rot sections in the siding on the exterior of the house, repaint, caulk, fix a gutter.

It was expensive and not worth it. They gouged me. They are very slow because they run on a very high hourly rate. They are not just very forthright. I was mad at them and I had to call the company. They are very responsive. I would never, ever use them again.

I'm not too happy with them. I think they charged way too much, for what they did. If I had known how to find a handyman in the local paper, I would have done that, instead. He did do some work, but he ruined my back door. I mean, I saw him doing it, and I didn't stop him. I wouldn't use him again. He cut a big hole through my back door. That didn't make me too happy. The price was way too high for what he did. He was here a hour an hour to an hour. It was not worth that.

First visit went well, although repairman chatted a lot and "rounded off" the time he actually spent working. When he handed me the bill, there were some surprise "service charges" added to the already exorbitant (I felt) charges. The return visit had to be rescheduled twice because the dispatcher could not seem to get her act together. We felt that the workman did a poor job of matching the stain to our existing woodwork. There was less chatting this time because I stayed busy elsewhere. He had 20 minutes remaining in his first ($90) hour, and yet it took him 40 minutes to determine that he could not fix the front doorknob. This time was also "rounded off," and more "service charges" were added!
Description of Work: Removed two sets of indoor shutters and plugged hinge holes w/ wood putty. Hung 7 pictures. Screwed in a bathroom door stop that we had purchased (first visit). Sanded and stained wood putty repairs. Tried unsuccessfully to repair front door lock. Told us to call a locksmith (second visit).

The boss is very good. He replaced the material and it flooded for the 3rd time. WE bought linoleum and cut it to fit. Used company about 4 times for one of the toilets not flushing. Tony got it cleared but we were charged a service fee once after 2 weeks, and told that low flush toilets don't work as well as regular toilets. Response time sometimes takes several days but Tony is a good plumber. I asked him to look into pre-made bathroom vanities at Home Depot. He took measurement but never got back to me in this regard.

They did the work as scheduled and were courteous and willing to work around some scheduling difficulties. The work was good quality and I will hire them in the future as need arises. Overall, I was very pleased with them.
Description of Work: I had 4 posts supporting the roof of my porch that were becoming rotten. They replaced those posts and also did some minor repairs on my roof. Their original estimate was 600+ but they actually completed the work in 4 hours and I qualified for a 1/2 day special and paid much less than the original estimate. They obviously were honest to a fault.

I was told that Mr. Handyman charges $159.00 for the first hour and $90 for each additional hour. Also, I was told that I had the option to purchase the calking, but they would not honor a warranty if I purchased an inferior product. I purchased a DAP 3.0 product for Kitchen, Bath & Plumbing use (second most expensive at Home Depot). The repairman was scheduled to arrive at 12:00 Noon and he was punctual. I was delayed at work, but my husband was home to let him in. He visited with my husband until I arrived home. My husband was not aware that he was was on the clock and that we were paying him to talk. After I arrived home, I explained my expectations and that I did not like the caulking job that had been done by a previous vendor. He started working around 12:20 p.m. When he first started working, I checked to see if he would like a foot stool to set on, and he was using toilet paper to dab his fingers, which did not give me much confidence. I gave him paper towels to use. When I realized it was taking him a long time to caulk the first floor bathroom, I decided that I did not want to spend another $90-plus dollars on the second floor bathroom. It took him an hour to complete the job and he explained that the caulk I had purchased was hard to work with because it was fast drying. Although, when I returned home from work at 5:30, the caulk was still tacky. The job he did was better that the previous vendor, but I do not believe he had had a lot of experience applying caulk. On the final bill I was charged $135.00 for 1-1/2 hours and a $69.00 service charge (he was at my house 1 hour and 15 minutes plus a few minutes to write out his bill. However, I did receive a 10 per cent discount for being an Angie's List member. I felt I should not have been charged for the time he visited with my husband. He could have started working before I arrived.
Description of Work: Applied caulking around one bathtub. I had removed the old caulking.

to reWork was requested by my 85 year old mother because she saw Mr. Handyman listed in the Yellow Pages and associated with Angie's List. She called 2x prior to the appointment to cancel without a response. Technician arrived around 8:45 AM and spent approx. 10 minutes to wash off the A/C air filter; another 10 minutes to install one screw in a ceiling fan light cover. The last task was to install 4 small wire sliding baskets in lower kitchen cabinets. I monitored the work via remote video by way of my Mom's security system. It took about 35 minutes for the Mr. Handyman technician to install the 4 small sliding baskets. All of the work was performed satisfactorily. Afterwards, the technician spent almost 1 hour writing the invoice (again, I was monitoring via video, real-time). Final bill for about 55 minutes of work = $231. Really? Hourly rate: $90; Service Charge (just to show up): $69. I called the office several weeks later; they stated they never received cancellation calls. However, they did state the technician was "new" and probably had issues creating an invoice (which, Mr. Handyman charges you their time for writing up). Seriously; Mr. Handyman charges $90/hr to the customer for writing the invoice? This office agreed to refund about $40 which was paid. Egregious!

He was very polite, spent a lot of time talking, and showing me photos of his previous work. Charged $69 for an estimate which was emailed to me the next day. The estimate was for an hourly charge of $90 per hour, and the estimated man hours was 44 hours at a cost of $3,945! Outrageous! It would take 2 hours or less to remove the existing deck/porch attached with hinges and setting on cinder blocks. It would take no more than 8 to 16 hours to rebuild the deck by an experienced contractor. Also, this estimate included labor charges only! I was responsible for purchasing all materials and having them delivered to my home!
