As I mentioned above, David Carpenter has not been to my site since hiring my contractor and that was 4 months ago. I have now completed phase 1 and requested my retainer back from Mr Carpenter since he did not provide his service. I have contacted an attorney and are filing charges for breach of contract and fraud.
Description of Work: David Carpenter was hired on with a retainer of $10,000 for being a personal interior designer. He was to be on site with my contractor for design consulting. Once I began phase 1, Mr Carpenter has not been to my home and we are now starting phase 2.

My company and I take great measures to make sure all clients receive services that are agreed upon, and are completed with the utmost satisfaction. After being made aware the client wanted a refund and wasn't satisfied, our legal representation reviewed all documented services rendered and hours spent, concluding we had indeed kept true to the contract signed by both parties. I'm truly sorry that this client felt he didn't receive the services he expected, but we provided great selections, professional direction on previous client purchases, a reputable contractor available for that area, and numerous hours of consultation. I only wish him the best, and many happy years in his beautifully remodeled home.

Mr. Carpenter was recommended to us by a friend who was having a bathroom renovated at the time (his bathroom wasn't completed by Mr. Carpenter, by the way). He certainly talked a good game and seemed like a competent designer and contractor. What we didn't know at the time but he'd already mismanaged the funds for our friend's renovation and the subcontractor on that job had quit. He scrambled to find a new subcontractor for that job and for our job. Again, we were in the dark so we gave him more than $19,000 as a deposit. They did demo the kitchen in late July, 2015 and then nothing happened for months. We only saw Mr. Carpenter 2 more times. He came to visit us once at the end of August, 2015 to apologize profusely. Then he came again the first week in September, 2015 to pick paint colors and counter tops. We haven't seen him since. He'd already paid himself his $7000 "design fee" and so never bothered to come back. When his incompetent subcontractor continued to not show up to work on our kitchen, he'd text him and call him but that was about it. When we repeatedly asked Mr. Carpenter to check on the project or come see us, he'd lie and tell us he was out of town. Or feign a migraine. He stayed just involved enough in the project (by texting the subcontractor to tell him to work) to be "legally" not at fault. He dropped that pretense altogether in December. He blocked us on social media and blocked our phone numbers from ringing through to his phone. The subcontractor is almost as bad and we will write a separate report about him. He convinced us that Mr. Carpenter wasn't trustworthy (which he isn't) and we agreed to pay him directly. Mr. Carpenter agreed to that in November. That did NOT however excuse him from the task of designing and managing this project and our contract was still with him. He just didn't care. He had his money and was never coming back. As for his "design," the kitchen as it is now has none of his design work in it because again, he never came back. The flooring he picked couldn't be purchased because he never told us where to pick it up. He promised to "gift" us curtains but they never appeared. He promised to help us pick light fixtures but that didn't happen. So everything in the kitchen has been designed by me. Even though I have cancer, I also have to take over the management of the project. It's been 9 months of me kicking and screaming and trying to get the subcontractor Mr. Carpenter hired to do his job. And yet Mr. Carpenter actually has the audacity to believe he earned his $7000 fee. He also had the nerve to tell us "I'm just the designer and my job is done." And yet our contract was always with him. He even told us on numerous occasions "I'm the contractor." He just didn't care. And again, "his design" doesn't exist because he didn't design anything. He essentially paid himself $7000 for picking 2 paint colors and white counter tops. I've reached out to several REAL designers after this experience and they're dumbfounded by that. We now know that everything he told us is a lie. He has a personal Facebook account where he posts pictures that are implied to be his design work. The pictures are all the work of other designers. He told us he had filmed a pilot for HGTV. We now have confirmation that he was lying. He told us he'd been a designer for years and yet we discovered that as recently as last year, he was working for an assisted living facility. He's a fraud and a liar. He took our money and never looked back. The friend who recommended him? Mr. Carpenter stole his money too. His bathroom was completed through the charity of a local church. We believe Mr. Carpenter will do this over and over and again and so we intend to report him to the State Attorney General. The friend who recommended him plans to do the same. If a "designer" or "contractor" named David Carpenter ever tries to be involved in any project you are planning or are involved in, run away as quickly as possible. Don't make the same mistake we did. We've lost a great deal of money (and the use of a working kitchen for 9 months) by being foolish enough to believe a con artist. We admit our own stupidity and that we were naive. At least we can try to prevent it from happening to anyone else. We can back up everything in this review with text messages between us and voice recordings of Mr. Carpenter.
Description of Work: Mr. Carpenter was hired to design and act as general contract for our kitchen renovation. He was supposed to oversea the process from beginning to end. We weren't removing any walls or changing the layout at all. The process was supposed to involve demolition of the upper cabinets and adding open shelving, painting the remaining cabinets, replacing flooring, installing new appliances, new counter tops, painting walls, adding a subway tile backsplash, putting in a new vent hood and new light fixtures.

This situation is extremely unfortunate. I personally spent hours with both clients upon conception of a design plan. A contractor that I had used before and was completely satisfied with, took the money and disappeared mid-project. It'[Member Name Removed] the kind of thing I never would have imagined could happen. He changed all contact info, and there was no way to connect with him or his team of workers. One of the two clients called the other with his "personal ideas" of what actually happened, and nothing I could say or do mattered to any of them. I found other qualified contractors that consulted with both clients regarding the reputation of my company, and me personally. Much work had already been done on the demo side, but the funds were now too low to cover the total project. I personally paid an extreme amount of money to finish the projects, and the new contractors went above and beyond to make certain clients were happy, working at reduced rates. It saddens me to read what these clients perceive to be the truth. I had 3-way calls with the clients, new contractor and myself to resolve the unfortunate situation, and discuss the new plan to complete the project to their satisfaction and my company'[Member Name Removed] standards. After the projects were completed, the conversations between my clients escalated to a whole other level. They researched where my family members worked, sent extremely inappropriate emails that my family'[Member Name Removed] companies had access to. What I worked at personally and hired out professionally, turned into a very unfortunate situation. Both clients were left with beautiful homes, but with an assignment to try and ruin my business (and family) reputation. I only wish happiness and health to these former clients.
