The installer arrived and I showed him what I wanted done and inquired how much time it would take. He said he would be done by 2:00 (which was five hours). Although this was one hour above the quoted four hours, I reluctantly agreed because he was already at my home and I simply wanted this project accomplished. I informed him that I had other projects around the house I would be working on and he needed to be done by 2:00 at the latest because I needed to go downtown Houston for a few errands (I live in Pearland) and I left him to work alone (big mistake). As I was walking away, his phone rang and it was the company calling. Although I heard him say he would be here all day, I really didn?t think anything else about it. Hindsight is 20/20, but I should have walked back into the kitchen and showed him my hand and told him five hours and then you?re out. Although I checked in on him from time to time and it appeared as if he was making progress, when I walked into the kitchen shortly before 2:00, I was extremely disappointed to discover that he had only installed 17 handles. At this point, I asked him to expedite installing the other 16 handles because I still had errands to make, however, he continued to dilly dally along and two hours later at 4:00, had only installed an additional 9 handles. Surprisingly, after spending 7 hours to install 26 handles, he was able to install the final 7 handles in only 20 minutes which led me to believe he could have easily installed all 33 handles in less than 2 hours so I?m confident if I was quoted a flat rate of $140.00, I'm sure he would have accomplished this task well within the initial four hour estimation. Additionally, to further add insult to injury, my desire to have the ?professional installation? look went the way of the doh doh after I discovered he drilled a small ?pilot? hole in two of my kitchen cabinets. At first, when I pointed it out to him, he appeared to not know what I was pointing to and as he got closer, (he probably noticed the steam coming from my forehead) and said something about not knowing if my mother could reach the cabinets but he never asked this question in the 7 hours and 20 minutes he spent in my home. While he offered to go to Home Depot to find the right color of the putty to fill the pilot holes, my entire day was wasted and I was over this project and simply put, over him. Although he cleaned up the visible wood shavings, later, I had to vacuum drawers and cabinets to clean up what he missed. I'm partially to blame because, while the company mentions a contract they prepare for me to review and sign and I requested one, it was not provided (first flag) and I had to call the company to follow up to see if they received my email since I had not heard from them (second flag). Lesson learned is that I'm not accepting any more hourly rates from anyone without a contract. In closing, although he stayed a bit longer to measure my garage ceiling for a future project, I told him we would do it later and he left.
