CMC Custom Carpentry

BUYER BEWARE! This guy took a materials advance and ran! He is a thief and he threatened me with bodily harm. Chris McMullen is the owner of CMC Custom Carpentry. He came to my house and provided an estimate for some carpentry work. I hired him for the job - he wrote out a contract on some notebook paper and required a 50% materials advance upfront ($475). We scheduled for him to start the job about 10 days out. Chris teller-cashed my check the same day he received it. He no-showed on the date that we scheduled for him to start work. (Later he got his story mixed up and said he forgot about my job.) When I called him to find out where he was - he said he had to finish another job. This was extremely frustrating as I had rearranged my work schedule for him to be at my house and he didn't have the courtesy to call and tell me he wasn't starting the job that day. We rescheduled for the next week. The day before he was supposed to show up (a day that I told him I was tied up with an event) he called to ask alot of questions about the job and proposed some interesting ideas for the work that we had already discussed. He asked me to take some pictures of the existing trim, etc. I was unable to work out the details with him as I was tied up all day and I was worried that he was going to buy all the wrong materials as he didn't seem to understand what we discussed. He said he had not yet gone to the lumber yard and I told him not to go as we obviously needed to revisit the job specs. I told him we may need to push the job out since I didn't have time to discuss it that day. He pressed to know if I wanted him to come that week, said he needed to know right then, so I told him to just cancel the job. He said he would only send me half of my money back - I told him that was unacceptable as he took that money for materials and he had not yet purchased any materials. He said it was for his time. He gives free estimates, did not purchase materials, and did not do any work. Later, he lied and said my check was in the mail. After a few days I did not receive it and contacted him. He kept giving me a sob story about him being a single dad with a 16-year-old daughter. I told him I would contacting AngiesList and would pursue him legally for not refunding the full materials advance. At that point he texted me several messages with expletives and threats to my home and to me personally. He continued with the threats the next day. Here are a few verbatim quotes: "Just remember, B*tch, I know where you live", "You need a good dick*n", "so F*ck you, F*ck my reputation up Cu*t", etc. Because of the threats, I contacted the police and they issued him a citation. If he retaliates, it is a felony. When I contacted AngiesList to let them know they should remove this guy, they said they couldn't remove him without proof that he has a felony. I wonder how many other vendors are on AngiesList like this guy. This guy had a solid A rating. Thanks AngiesList for introducing me to the worst individual I have ever met in my life. I found a couple other websites where people listed the same feedback about him taking money upfront and no-showing, or not finishing the job. He didn't do any work and took my $475. Buyer beware for this guy and any other vendors on AngiesList.

Chris arrived on time and put crown molding in our bathroom. Then Chris helped us with a window issue we were having.

He is dependable, reasonable and is a nice guy to work with. Plus, no job is to small for him.
