Neal and his crew are very professional. They arrive on time or a few minutes early everyday. Neal is on target with how long the job would take even finishing a little early. He is very flexible with scheduling and is great to work with. He is at the job site everyday and actually does much of the work as well. The crew cleans up after each job and leaves our home as clean as they found it. Quality workmanship, with high reliability, at reasonable prices means will be hiring Lawton Construction for many more projects. We appreciate the great work they do.
Description of Work: Lawton construction painted our living room and replaced damaged wood under our sink. They also painted all the trim fireplace and built in bookshelves. They replaced our ceiling fan as well. We worked with Neal Lawton previously three years ago when they repainted our kitchen. They took down all wall paper re-textured the walls and refinished our cabinets. We were really satisfied with them then, so we decided to hire them again.

Neal did an overall great job on installing multiple rooms of crown molding in our home. He worked with us on the price and we feel as if were given a great deal. They were fast, very nice to have in your home and courteous of your belongings. the only reason I gave a B on Quality is because they did hit my walls in a few spots and left a few areas that were somewhat poorly done and I am still finding small splatters of paint on things from when they painted the molding but didnt cover my floors.... BUT that happens. It is crown molding and it is very detailed work..there will be nicks and spots that arent 100%. I would still use his services again and I know he will give me a great product for a good price. I would recommend sing Lawton Construction.

Given the other reviews, I am deeply disappointed that I have not heard from them again. No, the email is not going to my SPAM filter. I checked. No calls, no email, nothing. Unprofessional. I can only imagine how bad it would be if they did the job and I needed to reach them. for something.
Description of Work: Mr. Lawton arrived promptly at the house on to take measurements and scope of work to prepare an estimate. It is 11 days later and I haven' t heard from him. At the very least he should have been professional enough to communicate that: 1. He wasn't interested in the job or 2. He needed more time to prepare the estimate and it would be ready on xx/xx/xxxx date/.

I thought they did a good job. They replaced the siding that I wanted them to replace and did what they were asked to. Before they left, I pointed out something that was deficient and they fixed it. As it happened, there was a little damage done to some bricks which they didn't point out to me. We just kind of found it so that was kind of negative. Overall, I guess my experience with any sort of contractor seemed pretty bad so my experience with them was good. Actually my husband was home when it was happening. I think they thought it would just take one day but it took two, I believe.

This company is very professional. I received 3 estimates, and they are the only ones that provided an itemized list. Sara recommended some places to go look at flooring and once my materials came in they picked them up and delivered them to my house, until it could be installed. It took me 2 monthes to wait for my installation date, but this was at the end of the summer, and they had a lot of customers at the time. They came promplty and assisted with moving furniture, and then started demo of my old floors. Neal is wonderful to work with and each day would touch base with me on what was being done that day, and what to expect. He suggested I replace my base moulding since this had to be removed anyway to install the floor. This was definately worth it. They also retiled my fireplace with porcelin tile. Neal's workers were very respectful as to not damage any of my furniture or applicances, and they were very quick and professional with their work. I would not hesitate to hire them again.
Description of Work: Installed engineered hardwoods in my living, dining, and hallway. Installed porcelin tile in my kitchen. Replaced base trim in same areas. Purchased materials from vendor recommended by Lawton.

The crews came in and worked to get the job done, with quality. Did a great job of keeping the work site clean and really took pride in the quality of the work. It took a couple days to complete the installation, and they took down our bed and put it back up for us to sleep over the two nights. These rooms connected to a wood flooring hallway and instead of just putting a transition joint in, they worked to blend doorway intersection. They installed the floor, returned the furniture and made sure all trash was picked up and extra wood and materials stacked and put out of the way. I also had a cracked hall way tile and I asked Neal if he could repair it and he said yes and did the work after the wood floors were done. I will be using this same company to paint and fix other items in the house, I think they did a great job!!
Description of Work: Lawton Construction installed 3 rooms and closets of flooring for me. Two different woods, 3/4 Oak tung and groove and 5/8 Bamboo tungue and groove. I had to order and purchase the flooring, but the cost included pickup of wood and plywood, removal and restoration of the furniture and the installation of all of the floors. The original date was a week from now, but Neil was able to pull the date in and get the work done before the holidays. The cost was completely comparable to all other installations, and with great quality.

On October 9th, my 27 year old dishwasher died, and flooded several rooms of the house. Even though the water was cleaned up in less than 2 hours, the damage was done! Both the restoration company and my insurance agreed that the wood flooring in the affected areas had to be replaced. I immediately called Neal since he had originally installed the floors, just 8 months previously. After explaining my situation, Neal worked me into his schedule the next day, and came to access the damage. He actually arrived while the insurance adjuster was there, and helped me with the walk-thru. Neal gave me some "to-do" items to help facilitate the repairs, and was able to fit me in his schedule to replace the floors. My insurance adjuster actually said "we'll use him as our wood floor expert"!. Neal worked up an estimate for the repairs, including what would need to be done to restore the kitchen, and provided it to the insurance company within 24 hours. This timely co-ordination helped the insurance settle the claim in a very short time, allowing me to begin getting my home back as quickly as possible. I also decided to do a little remodeling in the kitchen, since the process had already been started by the flood. Neal and his crew assisted me in replacing damaged sheet rock, removing wall paper, and texturing and painting the ceiling and walls in the kitchen, as well as replacing baseboards throughout the flooded areas. He worked with me to select the correct materials and manage the project in a much more expedited fashion than I would have imagined. In less than 30 days after my kitchen, 1/2 bath, dining room, living room and den were water damaged, I had new wood floors installed, the kitchen updated with new walls, paint, appliances, counter tops and backsplash. We still have a few more things to do, but thanks to Neal, we are well on the way.

They completed the job in about a week and a half. His wife was very easy to communicate with. Overall, it was a good experience. They could have been a little more detail oriented because they require that the customer purchases all of the material and they do the labor. I wanted to know more specifically what they needed and when they needed it by so there was a little miscommunication there.

How did it go? The short answer is that it was just about the best experience I've ever had working with a contractor What could have been a massive, stressful renovation went off almost without a hitch and when the work was finished, I was completely satisfied. OK, for the long answer, let's start at the beginning... I needed to get my house ready for sale but there were a lot of repairs that needed to be done before I felt I could get the best price. So I check out Angie's List to look for some of the best rated contractors and Lawton Construction was right there near the top. I was going to be living in the house in the evenings but absent during the day, so I needed a contractor who was going to have skilled craftsmen on staff and who would be there supervising every day to ensure everything went according to plan and that the resulting work was of high quality. I called a few other companies but after Neal came out to the house and I had a chance to talk to him it was apparent that he knew what he was talking about and that he was exactly the kind of contractor that I could work with. Included in the quote for work was a breakdown of the materials I would need to buy before the project began. It also provided some suggestions on brands to buy and places to get items that were less expensive and that had a wider selection than the local hardware store. I had all of the materials ready to go except for a late arriving shipment of slate well before my project start date. Neal and his crew were able to start work 3 days early, which was great for me. The original estimate was the work would be completed in about 15 work days (it was actually completed after what I think was about 12 days of work - including one Saturday). Neal and his crew would show up every morning around 8AM or very shortly thereafter to begin work. I would talk to him briefly to get an update and discuss the day's work and then I would leave to go to my job leaving my house keys with him. The progress they made each day was pretty incredible, but it wasn't "hurried". Neal hires guys who know their trade. This company doesn't hire random guys who don't know what they're doing. It seemed to me that every one of his crew members was a competent pro that took pride in his work - a welcome change from many other contractors I've had to deal with. The smart hiring decisions of the company shows in its work, which is excellent. The first few days consisted of taking down the popcorn ceiling. This is a messy job - there's no way around it, but they did a great job of putting down plastic sheeting everywhere and blocking off the rooms they were working on so that the dust didn't migrate to other areas. They did this work in sections so that part of the house was liveable at all times. I did end up spending a few nights in a hotel but only a few which was pretty amazing considering the amount of work going on all over the house. As an example of the extra-mile treatment they give... In order to take the popcorn down from the ceiling in the master bedroom and paint it, they needed to dismantle and move a king size bed. On the day they finished with their work in the master bedroom, when I came home that evening I was pleasantly surprised to find that not only had they reassembled the bed and moved the furniture back in the room, they actually made the bed! This might seem like a little thing, but I point it out because these kinds of touches on top of their already excellent work just made coming home at the end of a work day so much less stressful, knowing the house would be in the best, most liveable condition possible when they were finished with their work for the day. You can see in the section above all the work they did. I could list every item again and tell you they did a great job, but instead I'll just point out that in the few cases where I did place some blue tape after the walk-through, they were all addressed completely to my satisfaction. Neal even did some additional work that he did not charge me for. For example, he replaced a fan in the attic roof that had malfunctioned, fixed some framing that had come un-nailed in the attic, installed 2 additional ceiling fans, painted an extra exterior door, did some additional caulking, and even cleaned up after another, less fastidious contractor I had hired to do some other work left the kitchen in a mess. I'm sure I'm forgetting a lot, but you get the idea. They're good, they're professional and they did a job in two and a half weeks that would have probably taken me two and a half years of weekends to do myself, and they did it with professionalism, courtesy, and skill. I know the improvements Neal and his crew have made will more than pay for themselves when the house goes on the market soon, and I really couldn't be happier with how everything turned out.
Description of Work: Removed popcorn ceiling throughout house, refinished and painted kitchen and laundry room cabinets, painted all interior walls, ceilings and trim (including garage), painted 3 exterior doors and 2 interior doors, removed 408 sq ft. of old vinyl and tile flooring, installed 737 sq feet of file and slate (plus grout and sealing), installed new cabinet hardware, installed wainscoting in entryway, replaced window stools, installed new can light, installed 3 new ceiling fans, fixed caulk around bathtub, installed new screen door, repaired barn door, built a new wooden gate for dog run, patched concrete in driveway, pressure washed home exterior, fixed board that had popped loose in attic, replaced an electric vent fan in roof, caulked around wood on exterior

At first things went well. Price seemed fair to screw down floorboards for a 200sf carpeted master bedroom and 75sf carpeted hallway. Neal and 2 guys showed up and ran around pulling up carpet and screwing down floorboards for about 30min when they told me they were finished. We reviewed the work and asked them to redo several spots which they completed in 15min. When I asked them for a 2nd quote for the remaining three150sf carpeted bedrooms they came back at 700$. I thought this was absurd especially given the time they spent on the first space. I was told this fee was "industry standard" and we went our separate ways. A month later I got another company to do the 2nd space for $250 and it took them about 4 hours to thoroughly complete the job. I even paid them extra because some of the areas Neal and his crew worked on were back to their original squeaky state. Now the 2nd space is tight and quiet but we will have to completely redo the remaining areas that Neal and his guys buzzed through. Very disappointing.

Response from Lawton Construction Co
We are very surprised that this client posted this review. Our pricing was consistent for both the 1st and the 2nd quote. The 1st subfloor repair was completed in less time than expected, and as a courtesy, Neal surprised the client by reducing the previously agreed upon payment. Several weeks later, the client e-mailed us to tell us that she was now ready to repair the subfloors in additional areas and requested a new estimate. In this e-mail, she said, “I wanted to touch base with you about the great job you all did of nailing down our upstairs flooring [and] I was looking to schedule an appointment to complete the floors in the remaining three bedrooms…”. Please note that there was no mention of any complaint about the project we had already completed, but instead, she praised the work she had received at a discounted price. When she received the 2nd quote, she called to complain about the pricing and reminded us that Neal had given her a price break after the completion of her first project. I explained to her that there are occasions where a project takes less time than anticipated, and even though our pricing is fair and competitive, we will reduce the final payment as a courtesy. This is never something we have to do, but rather something we choose to do to treat our clients in the way we would want to be treated. However, just because we graciously reduce a bill one time, does not mean that now every quote we give to a certain client should be further reduced. After some consideration, we offered to reduce the pricing by $100 this one last time, but explained that in the future, we would offer no further reductions. The client insisted that the pricing on the 2nd quote needed to be reduced further and we stated that we would not be able to meet that request. The client stated that she would have to find another company to do the work and we told her that we understood. To this day, we have not received one phone call, e-mail, or any other form of communication from this client stating that there was any problem with the work we completed April 12th of this year.

Working with Neal and Sarah Lawton is a great experience. They are professional, pleasant and have an excellent business ethic. Neal and his crew do excellent work. The painting job was PERFECT. I have never seen such crisp lines and thorough coverage. The floors are beautiful with no flaws whatsoever. The baseboards were painted thoroughly and carefully installed. Neal's crew was professional as well. They were here for 3 days and worked hard with little down time and were always pleasant and courteous. Neal and Sarah both are very detailed oriented and are great communicators. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND Lawton Construction.

Talked to few contractors and got quotes from 3. Neal was not the cheapest but talking to him got the feeling he knows what he is doing. So we went with him. Our gut feeling was correct. He did an excellent job in explaining the details, work time frame etc. As Murphy's law goes the delivery of the material got delayed. Even though I bought the material myself and the delay is not his fault, Neal worked with me on rescheduling without complaining. He was able to adjust his schedules and get the job done well. Will definitely hire him again.

My overall experience with this company was great! I was not very knowledgeable about the various types of wood products on the market, but both Neal and his wife Sarah walked me through every phase of the process from wood selection to the type of install that would work best. They were professional, knowledgeable and very easy to work with. They are a great team with a willingness to go the "extra mile" to satisfy the customer.
Description of Work: Lawton Construction installed hard wood flooring in the dining and family room of my home. I could not be happier with the service I received from start to finish. After I purchased the flooring from a local store, Neal picked them up and delivered to my home a few days prior to the install date. He actually had to make 3 different trips, due to issues with the store where the flooring was purchased. Neal and his workers arrived at my home at the exact time I had been given, which was very important to me. They immediately began to move furniture and Neal even helped to move the fragile items from the china cabinet. Unlike many companies, this guy works with his crew and stayed the entire time. They hauled away the carpet and cleaned up when the job was finished. The floors are absolutely beautiful!

Description of Work: We have used Lawton on three different jobs now and have been very pleased with the experience. Sarah provides a great customer service experience. She is attentive to detail and follows up. Neal runs a great and efficient crew. The work hard, do the job right and clean up when they are done. We love our new floors, our chimney looks great...the old siding had literally been falling away...our house, garage port and out buildings look great after being painted and our new exterior double doors are beautiful and make the kitchen look so much bigger. I first started researching replacing my carpet with hardwood flooring in September of 2011. I called Lawton Construction and Sarah was very helpful in answering my questions and directing me to places to shop for the product. I also researched the product and process on-line, then asked them to give me an estimate. Neal came and took measurements, asked a few questions and then had Sarah email me an estimate withing the week. Unfortunately. things came up which prevented me from starting the project in 2011, and it was November of 2012 before I was able to get back to it. I contacted Sarah by email and asked if they could update the estimate and add an additional section of floor to be done. She responded promptly with a revised quote, and within the week, I had a scheduled start date. Neal picked up the wood and trim, delivered it all to my home when he said he would, and was there promptly to begin the carpet tearout on the day and time we had scheduled. The job was completed in the 4 days he had promised, and I had a beautifully installed new floor--four days before Christmas!
Description of Work: Sarah Lawton helped me to research the type of flooring and various suppliers as well as answering a ton of questions, even before I chose them to do the work. Once I knew what I wanted, I had them give me an estimate to install prefinished hardwood flooring throughout my home.

Update (10/01/2012): Sarah chose to insinuate in her response that I, the client, behaved bizarrely in some way, or that I was directly responsible for the bizarre happenings at my home after Neal encountered, and disapproved of, three workers whom I hired to paint. This is another reason that prospective clients might want to avoid Lawton Construction. Neal jumped to conclusions and unprofessionally harassed ME, his prospective client, in apparent retaliation for what he alleged these workers did in my absence (foul language, drinking, sitting around on the job). Then his wife attempted to blame ME for complaining about Neal. Neal was supposedly afraid of these 3 workers. He was supposedly afraid for his wife after one of them called her. But he wasn?t worried about frightening me when he called me, yelled at me, and accused me of colluding against him with three hired workers like a crazy woman. He threatened to bring the police to my house later that evening! I am a single, middle-aged woman who has raised her kids alone, held the same professional job for 24 years, and simply asked for a construction estimate on my shed while 3 workers painted my home. No trouble began until Neal arrived. Neal and Sarah are apparently unable to perceive my role in this as a mere prospective client who got caught in the middle of a boys? fight ? that Neal apparently started. I listened to Neal?s outrageous allegations, and then chose to believe my 3 workers. That one of my workers fired one of HIS workers for drinking on the job is, imo, a feather in his cap, not a strike against him. This is not something Sarah learned in my review, but rather something I told her on the phone after talking to my workers. Maybe she wasn?t listening. I called Sarah to politely defend my workers and to tell her that I was no longer in need of Lawton?s estimate. Yet Sarah portrays that she asked ME to find a different contractor. In fact, Neal left a message on my cell phone after my conversation with Sarah telling me that he could have 10-20 workers at my home ?tomorrow? and finish my shed in one day. It was MY choice to not work with them. Why did Sarah feel the need to portray it otherwise? AFTER I submitted my original review here, I discovered that Neal left two very angry voicemails on my phone. He apparently left them while I was asking a neighbor what transpired at my home that day. (Even though he was outside at the time, the neighbor didn?t notice anything awry while Neal was there, nor during any other part of the day, nor the days prior.) The tone of Neal?s voicemails frightened me. As he did with my 3 workers, Neal jumped to conclusions and set right to blaming me for what was in his own imagination. (If I were in his shoes, I would have assumed the homeowner was NOT involved ? and indeed, I wasn?t. And I would have ASKED the homeowner about his or her intentions and beliefs before jumping right in and making accusations.) [To be clear, the ?threat? that one of the workers apparently made to Sarah went something like this, ?That was WRONG! What you people did was WRONG, outright lying about somebody else to a homeowner like that! You are on my list!? (The ?You are on my list? phrase was the ?threat? in its entirety, by ALL accounts ? Neal?s after he changed his story from ?You are on my HIT list!?, Sarah?s who confirmed it in an email to me, and one of the workers who knows exactly which worker called Sarah. It was not a friendly phrase. It was a stupid thing to say. It could be perceived by some as a threat. But most adults know that that phrase is also often batted around, stupidly, to mean something less harmful than a serious threat. But I?m not condoning it. Also, Neal claims that the worker who called said that I gave him the Lawton?s ?address and everything,? but (a) the worker supposedly never said that, and (b) I didn?t DO that.] Voicemail 1 from Neal ? quote/unquote, in a yelling, angry tone: ?Some guys at your house just called and threatened my wife! So we?re going to make a police report. I will be at your house! Umm? just curious if YOU were threatening as well because they threatened! So, we have that. We recorded that. So, this is the weirdest thing I?ve ever experienced in 25 years of construction, and so I?ve never had some guys that were so unprofessional and then on top of that to call and threaten me, my wife, and my company! So you tell me how you want me to do this. Do you want me to file the charges, or do we need to bring the police over there?! What do we need to do? Because that?s uncalled for! On top of that, he says he?s got my address and everything from you and that he?s got me on his list to get me now, and ? So, you know, you need to call me back! What do you need me to do? I can have 10-20 guys there. We can tear down the shed tomorrow and build you a brand new one in ONE DAY. But I need to know why you?re having these contractors threatening me!? If you will call me and give me the address and the owner of that company. Then that way, we can proceed with this. Because I take threats very seriously!? Voicemail 2 from Neal, 3 minutes later, quote/unquote: ?I?m just trying to get a hold of you! I want to know why you are threatening my family!!? I already wrote of my direct conversation with Neal on one of his calls. He behaved the same way ? yelling at me and insisting that I told my workers to call Lawton Construction and threaten them, that I knew the workers were still at my house when they called (they weren?t), that I was lying, that I gave out the Lawton?s information, that he could bring the police over to my house right now if I didn?t cooperate, etc. I took the time to write this review in detail because, like most readers here, I was just a homeowner looking for somebody to do some work on my home. I did nothing wrong. I did nothing unexpected or outrageous or bizarre. Yet I somehow found myself in the middle of Neal?s crosshairs for something that apparently never even took place at my home ? but even if it DID take place, it was between 3 hired workers and Neal in my absence. I have no direct knowledge of it. How crazy is that? The Lawton?s did not give me one ounce of respect or courtesy from the time that Neal complained to Sarah that he was afraid because my 3 workers were cussing at him, blocking my driveway, and yelling at him. (Again, I ask ? WHY would they DO THAT? It makes no sense.) Neal and Sarah may or may not do good work (the pictures look lovely and most reviews are great) ? but IF you get caught in their crosshairs as I did, you may regret the day you placed a call to their office. Perhaps Neal needs a vacation. He acted like a very stressed out, over-the-edge, irrational person in my very short dealings with him. I would use caution with this provider.
Description of Work: I fear that Neal Lawton MAY have rushed to judgment on some workers at my home, and then lied about it. I can't know the truth about all of this, because I wasn't here for much of it. But, based on what I DO know for certain, I would not hire Lawton Construction. I contacted Lawton Construction because of their excellent reviews on Angie's List. Considering all that has been written here about them, if all had gone according to plan, I have little doubt that any work we had agreed upon would have been done well. However, there were a few kinks in our plans which led to one of the more bizarre experiences I've ever had. I accidentally put on my phone that Neal was coming at 12:30 for an estimate. That was my mistake. I called Sarah at 1:05pm to find out if he was on his way, but she reminded me that we had set a window of 12 to 3. She then told me that she had just spoken to Neal and that it would be closer to 3pm. She said that he'd give me a call 30 minutes prior. So I went on to a neighboring city to do some other business. I was at that business doing work at 3pm when Neal called and said he was at my house. He failed to give me the 30-minute call. It turns out that he thought that my conversation 2 hours earlier with Sarah was the equivalent of a 30-minute call and that we had a firm appointment. Okay. That was their mistake, or at the very minimum a communication problem between Sarah and him and Sarah and me. Of course, that was nowhere near a deal-breaker. When Neal called to say he was at my house, I told him I was 20 minutes away and would be rushing home to meet him. I was very clear about that. I pulled in 22 minutes later, but Neal was gone. After rushing through traffic in the rain, leaving my other business, and looking forward to meeting Neal, I was quite upset that he didn't wait around. I called Sarah. I wanted Neal to turn around and meet with me, but Sarah said there was no way that was going to happen. I probably got a little more insistent than I should, but no harsh words were spoken, no cussing, nothing out of the norm for expressing frustration -- just a raised tone of voice and the direct words that I was frustrated with the poor communication. Sarah handled my frustration very well, frankly. She was calm and clear and polite. But here's where it gets really weird. Sarah told me that Neal told her he had to leave because he didn't feel safe in my yard because of the three contractors I had at my home at the time. There was a painter here with two of his workers. They were sitting in the garage waiting for the rain to let up. (It was pouring.) They are EXCELLENT workers. Meticulous and conscientious and trustworthy. I found them here on Angie's List. Their reviews are every bit as good as Neal's. The painter, whom I've had the most contact with, oozes integrity and loyalty. I don't really know the other two very well, but they do great work and treat me very respectfully and kindly. All three of them have been very honest in our business dealings. Apparently, Neal told Sarah that the three guys were intentionally blocking my driveway with their truck and refusing to let him in, that they were cussing and yelling at him, that they called him an M.F., and that they were drinking beer in my garage. All of those things are SO out of character for at least the painter, if not the other two that I don't know as well, that I was in disbelief! Sarah said that Neal said he had to leave my home because "he doesn't work around those kinds of people and was in fear for his safety." I confronted the three guys and they were in utter disbelief. They were VERY believable as they explained that only these words were exchanged: Neal said something about the weather as he was running by, and one of the guys responded with "That's Texas for you!" That's it. No other words between them. None of them smelled like alcohol at all. Two of the three are teetotallers, and the third said he would never drink on the job. In fact, one of the guys JUST fired one of his workers last week for drinking on the job! I know the painter's character -- I don't know Neal's character. I cannot imagine these guys blocking a driveway or cussing at a stranger. I asked Sarah, "WHY would they behave that way? What happened that led to that?" Her answer: "Sometimes contractors are just jealous that another contractor is at the home." I've had a huge number of contractors at my home in the past several weeks. I haven't seen any jealousy from any of them. Next thing I know, about an hour later, Neal calls me to demand that I turn over all the names and adresses of the contractors working at my home.I wouldn't do it, just as I didn't give Lawton Construction's name to the three guys who were working for me. (One of them asked for the name of the company, but I wouldn't give it. Another one of them said, "Lawton Construction. It was on his truck." Apparently, after the three of my workers left my home, one of them called Lawton's number and told Sarah, "That was just wrong. That was just plain wrong for you all to lie to a homeowner like that." (I heard that from one of the guys after I hung up with Neal.) Neal called me for the guys' contact information because, he said, one of the guys called his wife and "threatened her." Now, Neal said, he's worried about her safety too! According to Neal, the guy who called his wife said, "You're on my list!" So, Neal was headed straight to the police station to file a police report on the guy!! Neal initially insisted that I'm the one who gave Lawton's information out and put the guys up to calling his wife. When I told him that I didn't know anything about anyone else calling his wife, he said, "Oh, yes you did! I KNOW you did!" But I didn't. Until Neal called me, I didn't know a thing about it! Of course, I have no idea what REALLY happened here in my yard. I wasn't here. But I am so confident in the character of the head guy, and have been likewise impressed by the other two men who have been working here for the past 3 days, that I truly doubt they randomly cussed out a stranger or randomly confronted a stranger in any way. Beyond that, Neal's propensity to blame ME for being involved in the guy's phone call, his propensity to exaggerate what he later admitted was probably an inadvertent blocking of the driveway as opposed to an intentional affront, and his propensity to exaggerate his 'fear' for his own safety and his wife's safety (I'm a single woman and haven't felt the slightest fear around these three), has me thinking that Neal was the problem. What did the guy who called Sarah after the fact possibly hope to gain? It was even stupider of him to say something like, "You're on my list," IF he in fact said something like that. IF that's what happened, it's regrettable and only feeds any stereotypes that Neal may already have. In sum, based on everything that went down here in the space of about an hour and a half, I am left to question Neal's character. I am certain that he overreacted in the few minutes of conversation I had with him where I was directly involved. The rest is ... crazy and from my standpoint, totally inexplicable. A total guess: Could the skin color of my workers have had anything to do with this? This was a very bizarre experience and an unfortunate experience that I thought should be told. The whole thing had a life of its own and I'm only left to wonder what went wrong. As for Sarah, she was polite, professional, and clear about everything from the get-go, except for the mix-up about the 30-minute prior call, which is easily forgiveable.

Response from Lawton Construction Co
Wow. What a story. All we can say is that our dealings with this client were very bizarre and we asked her to find a different contractor for her project. Most of the above comments testify to the craziness we experienced. For the safety of our crew and our clients, we reserve the right to refuse service in any environment where safety is compromised. In over 20 years of experience, Neal can attest that even the worst contractors do not typically behave this way on a jobsite. I am not even going to respond to the idea that we are racists. I notified her (I would want to know if someone I hired was at my home and there were safety concerns). She later called me back to defend them although they apparently did have to fire someone on their crew last week for drinking on the job (we found this out when reading her report). Then, the contractor (one of the “workers”), who sounded drunk, called our office, yelling at me, slurring his speech, cursing, and told me we were "on his list." Neal did call the client and requested that she not give out our information. Everyone who has ever done business with us knows: we deeply care about our clientele, we respect your time and property, we communicate very well, we are honest and professional, and Neal is a man of excellence and integrity. We look forward to continuing to serve all our fantastic clients!
