Not hired to perform work.
Description of Work: We reached out to Grasten for a quote on installing a home generator and referenced the $7,995 "deal" on Angies list. Grasten came out and offered a quote equal to "I'll match your best bid but that "thing" on Angies list is no longer valid and I can't honor it. It's probably 8 years old." This immediately removed them from the pool of potential companiesbeing considered to do the job. Shame on Grasten. They should "match" their own publicized offer.

Description of Work: I purchased a special offer for an Installation of a Home Generator. Unfortunately due to my HOA restrictions I was not able to use this offer. However, the company was great and even tried to help find solutions for a generator that would be follow the HOA requirements. They were professional.

I am very happy with Grasten. They contacted me immediately after I paid online for the Angie's List coupon and set up an appointment just days away. The technician came and performed the service without incident and was very friendly and professional. This was my first experience with Grasten since I actually purchased my generator a little over a year ago from Quality Home Products. Quality also does excellent work but they are excessively expensive, in my view, and they also contact me way too frequently to sell me additional highly priced services. When the maintenance was due on my generator I consulted Angie's List specifically to find a better deal from a highly ranked provider and that's how I found Grasten--which also was rated higher overall with more favorable marks in customer satisfaction than Quality (which also has a high rating). I intend to keep Grasten on my list as a primary provider.
Description of Work: Grasten performed the first of 2 semi-annual maintenance services on my 20KW Generac Generator, and the price I paid for both is $350 via an Angie's list coupon.

I received several bids from Local Generator companies. They were all in the $10,500 - $11,500 range. They all wanted to sell me 20KW generators instead of the new 22KW Generator that just costs about $300 more.. I found out later because they had a lot of 20 KW generators in their warehouses. When I would ask why they cost so much when the generator only costs about $4500, the only answer they would give me was this was "Turn Key"'. I do not mind paying a premium for Turn Key but thought that was too high. I decided not to do the generator. A few weeks later I saw an add in a local magazine for Grasten. I called and Joshua came by and gave me a bid that was significantly lower than everyone else. He recommended the 22KW for my house. He was the first person to really look after my needs. I decided to go with Grafton. Everything went smoothly from the concrete pad pour to the city inspections. Everyone I met was polite and professional. I am extremely satisfied and just recommended Grasten to one of my friends.

After being extremely impressed with the service professional's routine inspection and servicing of my generator, I engaged the firm to install a proper concrete pad beneath the generator and to install a whole-house surge protector. When the installation date for these items rolled around, I'd neglected to remember that I was to be in New York, so I missed the appointment. The company promptly and pro-actively installed the concrete pad, upgraded the gas lines to the generator and made other enhancements in my absence, and promptly called to reschedule the installatino of the surge protector since that required entering my garage (which they could not do in my absence). I was relieved that they were kind enough to return to install the surge protector without a single complaint about my failure to be home for the scheduled appointment. I would gladly recommend Grasten Power to anyone!
Description of Work: 1) Provided the annual generator service contract 2) Installed a concrete pad beneath the generator (having to move the generator to remove the pavers on which it was originally installed; they also upgraded the gas lines, etc.) 3) Installed a whole-house surge protector

The companies men showed up on time and went right to work. After some measuring and discussion it was decided by them and me to install the generator where we did. While they were installing that Livingston Propane Company arrived and installed a 250 gallon propane tank along with the piping to connect to the generator. The Men arrived at 9:00 AM and the installation part was finished by 11:00 AM. The electrician and his assistant arrived at 10:45 and began wiring the generator into my house. This required the installation of a separate panel for the generator. They were finished by 1: PM. Two days later one of there technicians arrived to instruct us on the use of our generator and to register it with the manufacturer. He also explained that the generator would do a self test once a week at whatever time we decided on. My wife and I live in Texas and the next hurricane we sit through won't be our first, it will be the first that we don't have to worry about finding fuel for a gasoline generator. No matter what, we never seem to have enough fuel. That won't be a problem again. We are very happy with the company and the professionalism of their staff. I highly recommend them to anyone in the Houston metro area.

Josh from Grasten came out and gave us a quote to install a Kohler 20kW generator with an automatic transfer switch on our weekend house. He performed a load test, discussed our power needs with us and thoroughly explained the process. A couple of days later we were provided a full written quote and soon after the contract was signed and the install was scheduled. The install went off without a hitch. Grasten took care of everything from start to finish in a professional and respectful manner. We did have one little issue with our generator. One day about 2 months after we bought the generator I realized it did not perform its weekly test. I called Grasten and had a tech out the next day. The problem turned out to be a manufacturing defect with the control board, which was fixed free of charge. Grasten has provided me top notch service and i have recommended them to all my friends. Great Service, Great Price, Great Experience.

Signed the contract on 6/19/14 with a 2 1/2 to 3 week completion date promise. Project was completed on 7/27/14. I had major problems with the hard start kits installed by a subcontractor. Called my AC guy and found out they were not needed. On the upside Josh never failed to respond immediately to a call or email. One of the Grasten employees had the character to point out that I needed a poured slab when they were installing a portable one. His boss may not have been pleased but I was! It prevented a major problem. The electrical subcontractor was excellent. He took the extra effort to run the electrical up through the soffit so I did not have ugly electrical conduit along my brick wall.

Grasten installed a home generator for me 2 summers ago. We chose Grasten based on their knowledge of the product and price. We had a 200 ft gas line ran from meter to the other side of house, the plumbers did an amazing job with the gas line and trench. Electricians were very friendly and knowledgeable about the installation as well. Since the install we have had 3 different techs come by for service and all of them were prompt and courteous. I would highly recommend Grasten for any of your generator needs.

We diecided to buy what is alleged to be the best whole house generator available. A Kohler 20 kw - Model 20RESA along with the most up to date Transfer Switch. We also contracted with Grasten for a custom Steel Cage to protect the generator from large falling tree limbs at an extra cost of $450.00. We signed the contract on April 17, 2012. Because of numerous problems from the get-go the installation was not completed until June 3, 2012. Just a small look at problems with this purchase: 1. On 5/16 Joshua first sent out Tri-Tek Plumbers to connect a new gas line to an already existing gas line. Said they were done but would come back and "change" what they did AFTER the City Inspector came by to inspect their work! When asked if the City Inspector would be coming back a second time AFTER they did the "change" they said "NO". This sounded very suspicious to us, so, when we said we wouldn't agree to a "change" AFTER the inspection, the plumbers called Joshua and they actually "changed" the configuration of the gas line right then and there and the City Inspector came the next day and passed the gas line configuration. NO changes were ever done to the gas line after that. This was just our first indication of problems to come.... 2. The following day at 9 am Joshua sent 2 men with WA Electric to install the Transfer Switch. At 11 am Tim from WA Electric arrived to tell us of a "problem" with the "amps" already at our electric panel inside the house. Seems that Joshua never inspected our electric panel to find that it was a 150 amps and the Transfer Switch was only 100 amps.....so, an umplanned for modification had to be made. 3. On 5/23/12 Joshua and a friend delivered the generator and custom made "cage". Lifting the 500 lb. generator off the back of his pickup truck they dropped it onto a "wagon" and eventually "dropped" it on to the concrete pad as it was obviously too heavy for the 2 men to hold for more than a couple of seconds at a time. They installed the crooked steel cage on the concrete slab by attaching with bolts (only at three corners as the cage was made so out of whack that Joshua had to hammer it into place over and over again but was unable to even attach the third corner to the concrete. Also the top of this substandard cage had huge spaces between the two crossbars that you could drive a mack truck through. When we came out of our home to look at the installation the concrete slab was cracked all the way through in two places and a large chunk was missing because of all the hammering (and was later found twenty feet away in the grass). We complained about the cracks in the slab and big gaps at the top that would allow large limbs to fall right through to the generator cover and Joshua argued with us about the slab and the cage until we conceded....this same day Joshua found that WA Electric had NOT connected the wiring in the Transfer Switch to the house so he COULDN'T TEST the generator so he told us that the electrician would come and hook up the generator and he would then come back and start it up for us. 4. The next morning (5/24) we told Joshua we wanted a new slab and a new cage that would fit the slab. We asked that Joshua show us a drawing of any new cage B4 fabricating it so we could see what dimensions they were building it to. He reluctantly agreed but never gave us dimensions before delivering a second cage that also does NOT fit the slab (though it is a little better than the first). Out of frustration, we said no more about the cage. 5. On June 1, 2012 Joshua delivered the new "cage" and new slab but when Joshua eventually removed the generator from the first slab and set it on the new second slab he took the shortcut of NOT first removing the gas line from the generator so we are left with a "crimped" flexible gas line to the generator! I guess this is what you get when the company doesn't have to worry about being sued in court!! 6. On June 1st it was supposed to be the final hook up (of the wiring) and the start up of the generator. However, the generator would not start! The battery was dead. The electrician said that Joshua had done something that he shouldn't have done with the generators computer and that had caused the battery to be dead! Someone went to the auto parts store and bought a battery. The generator started and was set for it's weekly test on each Friday morning for twenty minutes. 7. Joshua took our "cash" payment of almost ten thousand dollars on June 4th. 8. On the first test Friday we had to call Joshua because the 2nd cage he built would not allow us to open the top of the generator to see the controls! 9. On June 8th we had a power outage in our neighborhood and the generator came on as it was supposed to but we could not open the top to see what the control panel said. We called Joshua again because the generator had almost "failed" several times during the 3 1/2 hour power outage causing our computers and electronics to crash! 10. On 6/15 the 2nd Friday "test" FAILED to happen at all! 11. Since that day (6/15) we have had the Kohler electrician here five separate times and he has been unable to fix the problems in spite of placing a NEW MOTHERBOARD in the genrator on the first trip here! 12. Another power outage of over 5 hours had this "BEST" generator crashing our electronics numerous times and allmost shutting itself down over and over again. 13. Today 10/29, Joshua tells me that he is NOT responsible to us because of his deceptive CONTRACT! We have to now deal with Kohler and he would not listen to any reason nor try to help fix these problems. Claimed he didn't know Dave with Loftin Equipment (who is the Kohler man here in the Houston area).....wish we had known that before giving our $10,000 to Mr. Keller (Grasten). 14. BUY FROM THIS COMPANY AT YOUR OWN PERIL!!! ****UPDATE*** In January of 2013 we had a power outage for several hours and the generator came on and all electrical equipment transferred over to the generator. Then, for several hours the generator motor almost died dozens of times leading to al of our electtonics in the house "crashing" and numerous power surges that affected and/or ruined electrical appliances. After several attempts to reach Joshua at Grasten he sent someone to take a look. By the time he got here the electric had transferred back to the main box in the thouse and the generator was off. The service man who came out to help could find nothing wrong or to fix even though we told him we found out from the electric company that there had NEVER been a power outage in the first place!! Grasten could not tell us why the generator even turned itself on that day. The stress of this day sent me to the hospital with another heart attack........my eighth! When I recuperated from the hospitalization I began to email Loftin Equipment (the local distributor for Kohler here in Houston) asking them to replace the "lemon" generator we had received from Grasten. At first they were reluctant but after reading all the massive paperwork generated by all the service calls on this machine Loftin personnel decided to take the original generator out and replace it with a brand new one! They did so in early spring o 2013 and we couldn't be more pleased! The mew generator runs just fine and just the other day a storm knocked out approx. 20000 homes electric........but our home was protected by this nice Kohler generator which ran nonstop (without any glitches( for 18 hours straight until the electric came back on! \ At this point I guess we would buy a Kohler again but would NOT sign Mr. Keller's contract giving up our "right" to take him to court in the event it was justified. That part of his contract is too "self-serving" and completely on the sellers side for his own benefit! Just sayin....
Description of Work: **BUYER BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY**....READ their Contract! Buried right in the middle of their contract is a (small type) sentence that says, "customer agrees to forego any right to litigate the issues of claimed damages or to a jury trial". Principal, Joshua Keller, just finished reminding us (on October 29, 2012) that even though we gave him our $10,000 we have NO RIGHT to sue him for our money back because of this camoflaged statement so cleverly buried in their contract. I guess we will find out what a court of law says about Grasten's deceptive practices such as selling consumers products that are NOT fit for their intended purposes and then relying on a deceptive contract to forestall efforts to recover their damages......

Response from Grasten Power Technologies LLC
We are very sorry for any and all of the Health Conditions (member name removed) went through before, during, and after he generator was installed. We believe this review was caused by the Lemon generator and not based on Grasten's service. I would like to respond to this review step by step and explain some of the issues and differences Grasten and (member name removed) have had. First thing mentioned was our contract. Below is a copy and past of Grasten's contract verbatim. It works to protect both Grasten and the consumer. "This Agreement is not binding unless signed both by the customer and a corporate officer of GPT (either CEO or General Counsel for GPT) GPT disclaims any responsibility for damages caused by a storm, hurricane or any other acts of GOD. The sale and installation of a generator is not a guarantee against power interruptions or damages incurred as a result of storm or natural disaster. The Customer agrees that GPT will not be responsible for any consequential damages caused by storms or natural disasters, or power outages. Customer is also responsible for recommended maintenance on the installed generator; failure attributable to a lack of maintenance is the responsibility of Customer. GPT is entitled to be paid in full when installation is completed. Customer agrees that if payment in full is not made within 5 days of installation being completed, GPT is entitled to file a lien on the real property and improvements where the generator is installed and to seek payment including interest and attorneys fees in a competent court of law. " We feel our contract is very fair to the consumer. Now we will begin with the timeline 5/16 1.Grasten's plumbers came out to run the gas line, the customer noted they wanted a second on/off valve to the gas line, we ran gas line, had inspection scheduled for the next day and let them know we would add second valve after the inspection or we could reschedule inspection. We decided to come early before inspectors showed up and made the change and had line inspected and passed. 2. The electricians show up day 2, In the review (member name removed) notes there was problems with the design of the electrical system. The issue was with in the wire from the Meter to the electric panel in the wall. The electrical system was upgraded in years previous and not to code, Grasten's electrician simply pointed this out and let them know we would fix it no charge. 3. Delivery Day- Two of our techs as always delivered the generator, there was not dropping of the unit and the generator was in perfect shape when bolted to the concrete. We fabricated a metal cage to protect the generator, one of the legs was not straight and caused the pad to crack, we let her know we would replace the pad and frame withing 48Hrs. The customer had an issue with the distance between the frame pieces even though this was discusses and approved days earlier. 5. We replaced generator, flex line is rubber and cannot be kinked without serious force, the flex line is in perfect shape and still is to this day. 6. The battery charger was not on and charging battery during the pad and frame change out so we replaced battery and generator fired right up. 7. Customer was happy and had no problem paying the entire balance of $10,000 8. Customer wanted a cage to protect generator but then had problems viewing the screen. 9,10,11,12- Generator had numerous issues and this was brought to Kohlers attention and Kohlers warranty techs as well as Grastens went out several times the same day or next day they were called and fixed the generator. 13. (member name removed) called and threatened a law suit if Grasten would not replace the Kohler generator immediately. She was very nasty in her threats and at this point was very unreasonable. Grasten let her know the ball is in Kohler's court and it was not up to us to replace the unit. As far as not knowing Dave, there are many techs that work on Kohler Generators. 14. Customer claims the generator sent her into an 8th heart attack. Im sure the stress of dealing with a malfunctioning generator is very hard on ones family. I think the first 7 heart attacks may have helped contribute to the 8th. In the end Kohler decided to replace the generator, Grasten Volunteered to exchange it for a new one. We uninstalled the old one, took it back to Kohler, Picked up new generator, and installed it. We also gave another year of Free Maintenance on the new generator. Grasten did everything in its power other than forking over the 10k out of their own account to replace the generator. We tried in any way possible to make the customer happy. Below are a few emails sent to Joshua Keller after the review by (removed member name). "Hi Joshua, Just wanted to let you know that we lost power during the early morning hours of Thursday and our Kohler generator took right over without a hitch! Since it is the first time we actually needed the generator to take over our electric needs since we received the new Kohler at the beginning of the year I thought you would want to know that it went well. The electric was out over here from about four a.m. yesterday until 10;30 p.m. last night and the generator ran the whole time. There was one issue I think you should know about and that is that several times throughout that time period the generator did a noticeable short-lived "surge" sound......sorta like an engine being "revved up". Don't know what that means but wanted to report this to you. Overall, we were happy with the performance as we were one of only a couple of homes with full electricity for over 18 hours........what a godsend. Thanks," Hi Joshua, "Just a quick note to let you know that we had out of town company this week while the new generator went off at it's scheduled time (Tuesday at 7pm). I did hear it running about five minutes into the test run and went out to listen to how it was doing. It sounded pretty good when I was out there but did not get to listen any further as we had lots of company in the house at that time. Will let you know next week again when it self-tests again." >> Hey Joshua, >> >> Hope you and your family had a good holiday season. We did! >> >> Well, at 9:30 a.m. this morning our electric went off. About 10 seconds later this "new" Kohler revved up and took over as it was designed to do. It sounds like it is running steady (not like the original one). I am right now in the process of testing the capacity while it is running. I have turned on the double ovens, the dryer and a few other things that will show how well it handles the higher drawing appliances. >> >> Well, now I am hearing the generator go through short periods of surging up and down and then steady for a short time and then the up and down surging. This is happening while the appliances are "warming" up and coming to temp. I think this is normal........do you confer?? Hope so. >> >> Please let us know when the next servicing is due on this machine. Meanwhile, have a great day Josh. >> >> Regards, >> (member name removed) Needless to say the customer still contacts Grasten for maintenance and her generator was replaced by Kohler and Grasten. This was a one of a kind situation and we did anything possible to help the customer out. We apologize once again to the (member name removed) family and hope their Kohler generator works for many years to come.

Met with owner, Josh, on 6/22 to receive a free quote for both a standby and portable generator for my home. Was told I would receive the quote in a few days. After 5 days, I emailed Josh a reminder about the quote. He responded with a partial quote the same day saying it must have went to my spam folder (spam folder was empty), but the quote for the portable generator was missing. Emailed him right back, asking for portable generator quote. A week later, and still no response and nothing in spam folder. I have gone with another company.
Description of Work: Provider was contacted to provide estimate for standby and portable generator for home.

After my negative interactions today with Graston, where I was accused by Josh of not telling him I was worried about my generator, this morning I called another company, Cruz Air & Electric, and they told me they could come this afternoon. They were very professional and I have used them before for other electrical needs, so I feel comfortable paying slightly more for their contract ($350 per year) knowing that I will get called back when I call them, and get good service at a fair price, as promised and in a timely manner. After all, isn't that what this Anglie's List site is all about, talking about our good and bad experiences so others can be helped by them?
Description of Work: Don't waste your time contacting them. I called Josh last Thursday and told him I had a situation where I needed maintenance on a current 21 month old generator, and I wasn't sure that it was running right and it needed service pretty quickly. I asked if he could send someone out last week, he said no, but I'll email you the contract and call you next week to schedule service. I said okay his prices seemed fair. It's now Friday of the next week, no phone call, no email. When I called them this morning the service lady was not very apologetic, but I did a call from Josh saying they could come this morning. Well, I had told them to call me before scheduling to ensure I was home and I'm not home the only time they could come today which is a 1.5 hour window at lunch apparently. So after 5 phone calls back & forth, I told them never mind. They have terrible service, and wasted my time completely and got me worked up. Don't waste yours.

Response from Grasten Power Technologies LLC
This review is the first negative review Grasten has ever received in its 7 years of business. We pride ourselves with excellent customer service and the best installation and service for the price. We apologize for any inconveniences we may have caused. We are very concerned with this review and will do everything in our power to prevent this from happening in the future. I truly believe miscommunication between the home owner and the service technician is the blame for this review. During the initial phone call Grasten was called out in order to do routine preventative maintenance. We let the client know it would be the following week before making it to her home since this was not an emergency service call. On Friday morning we called to let her know we would be there around 11:00 am, the customer was good with the time, 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment the service technician called the customer to let her know he was running 30 minutes behind due to traffic. Mrs. Wedekind then told the technician she would not be able to make 11:30. The customer promoted to tell the service technician the generator was about to blow up, and this was an emergency. This concerned our service technician so the Director of Service and Installations, Joshua Keller called her to find out more about the issues she was having with her generator. The initial service call was for routine maintenance and the generator blowing up had never been mentioned before. This was the 4th phone call this morning regarding the generator service and she let us know she had more important obligations and told us she didn't have time to deal with this at the moment. Joshua Keller then walked her though the problems she was having and the real concern was the generator had not run its test run in a few weeks. We offered her a Monday appointment and Mrs. Wedekind let us know if we could not be at her location at 4pm today she would hire another company. Unfortunately we were not able to make this time due to other obligations. We tried to reschedule for Monday and this was not an option. Again we are truly sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused and will make the necessary changes in order to prevent this from happening again.

Couldn't have been more pleased with the whole process. Grasten listened to our needs and provided just what we were looking for. Workers showed up when they said they would and were professional about their job. Everyone seemed very personable. The 400 amp transfer switch was a special requirement for our particular setup and added to the cost. Still less than I was expecting to pay.
Description of Work: Grasten provided a standby generator for our home. It was a 20KW with a 400 amp transfer switch. We often get power outages and the generator has worked flawlessly. Christmas morning was when we appreciated having it the most. We lost power for several hours as we were preparing for the day. Grasten's quote was very competitive and professional. They took their time to understand our needs and provided a quote based on this. Their work was done on time and in a professional manner. Compliance with building codes and POA restrictions were handled by them for us.

The salesman came to the house and we discussed the various stand alone emergency generators available. Deciding on which size generator would be applicable for our size house. We decided on the 20KW. The company had licensed subcontractors, for gas and electricity to install the generator. This was done in an afternoon. The salesman called me several times to ask how the job was going and that he would stop by in a few days to review the work with me. He rechecked all the system and the generator. This may be a salesperson for Generac/Guardian Generators but he definitely knew everything about the installation of his product. As it turned out Joshua was also the Director of Operations for Grasten Power Technologies, there are times and this is one of them having a management person doing the sales and installation oversight was a definite plus. In the 2 years since installation there has been 3 occasions that the generator has come on for several hours each time,2 times in winter one in summer. The generator has run the 2A/Cs and all electrical in summer and the furnaces in winter, This company was just Great,in sales, installation and service for the generator.
Description of Work: We purchased a 20 KW stand alone (emergency) generator for our home the sales representative explained the usage of the product and the size for our house. We live in an area that when a Hurricane hits the coast even though we are 90 miles inland we will have outages of power for at times up to several weeks. The generator is run on natural gas and is self starting when the power fails.I have had it serviced twice by the company and have had a different maintenance person each time. The have been professional, efficient and very knowledgeable about the generator. Part of the service is to change the oil, recap the plugs and inspect the current produced going to the house. Last service call was March 12, 2013. The charge for maintenance is $300. for two trips per year.Excellent company to do busy with..

The generator and related switches were promptly delivered on July 18. The generator was installed on a cement pad leveled etc in preparation for electrical and plumbing work. On July 23, the licensed electrician tested the amperage draw of my home under full load to insure that the generator and Smart Switches were adequate. He reconfirmed that the 20kw generator would be sufficient and began the installation of the Smart Switches etc. This consisted of connecting them to generator and various home electrical panels. Concurrently, the licensed plumbers ran a gas line from my natural gas meter and connected it to the generator. On July 26, Centerpoint upgraded my gas meter and regulator and connect it to the dedicated generator gas line. The next day a technician arrived to perform start-up including amperage, and load testing of the generator and switch etc. All went well. He then did some owner training. He parting words were "Call me if you have any questions or problems". In summary, the entire process went extremely well. While it may seem simple, it was only simple because of experienced and knowledgeable people. I would strongly recommend Grasten.
Description of Work: I contacted Grasten in early July 2012 for the purpose of obtaining a bid for a whole house generator. They were extremely responsive and arrived on schedule. The estimator was extremely knowledgable. He determined my electrical needs based on the size of my electrical panels, number of A/Cs and other electrical appliances in our home.. He determined that a Geneac 20kw generator and related Nexus Smart Switches (transfer switches) were capable of providing "whole" house electrical service in the event of a power outage. Power outages seem to happen often in my area. He provided a written estimate of the complete "turn-key" cost of the generator and related smart switches including installation and natural gas meter upgrade. After getting bids from several competitors, I chose Grasten based on their professionalism, knowledge and responsiveness.
