I was very impressed with the professionalism, friendliness and helpfulness of the Agape team. I really took my time deciding on a contractor, (I got 6 estimates!!) not only trying to find the right price, but also someone I truly felt comfortable with. Of all the estimates I got ,Becky was the most thorough with measurements and taking pictures to give the most accurate estimate. Pricewise, Agape came in right in the middle. The finished project was within three hundred dollars of the estimate due to an unforseen electical issue and a slight increase in the granite order. Becky met me at the granite warehouse to choose the slab of granite and helped with picking out the backsplash tile. Once the project was underway, she checked in regularly to make sure everything was staying on track and that we were happy with the work being performed. Any questions or concerns we had were answered and adressed promptly. The guys working on the project were super friendly and so easy to communicate with. The best part was that the project was completed in 11 business days. The most time consuming was the painting of the cabinets due to all the prep work needed. On completion of the project, any issues we had with the quality of the work were addressed and fixed immediately. There was a little overspray from the cabinet painting on the celing and some paint came off the ceiling when tape was removed, but the guys came back the next day and touched up everything. This is definitely a company that takes its customer service seriously! I have already recommended Agape to a friend and would consider using them again for future projects.
We asked Jerry to submit a bid that broke the work down to separate components, which he did. His bid was very detailed, easy to follow, and explained all work to be performed in such a way that we understood fully what was to be done. One important note that I didn't think about initially...the bid was for labor and OBVIOUS materials only; it did not include tub, tile, flooring, paint, etc. Makes perfect sense, especially now that I see how many more options are available than what I had seen at the local home improvement stores! We did ask for a guestimate of materials cost based on general guidelines we provided and Jerry's past experience. As it turned out, this estimate was right on the money as far as cost per sq. ft. for specific materials.
Once we informed Agape that we wanted to contract with them, they gave us an estimated start date and approximate time to completion. We had some time constraints for completion, and their estimate fell within these deadlines. They started right on time, and despite running into several "surprises" along the way, completed the work within the time allotted.
I should have mentioned that this work (foundation and repair) was all being done as part of us moving to Austin. Because of the number and location of piers in the foundation work and our plans to move anyway, we actually "moved out" of the house prior to the foundation work, putting most of our belongings in storage and taking some things with us to an apartment close by. This actually proved to be a genius move...living through a remodel is tough enough, but through foundation work...no way. In any case, I think having the home vacant really helped Agape, as they didn't have to try and work around our daily lives.
The work started on June 13, right on schedule. Initially Steve, Eric and Jason were the three guys working on our home. They were all three extremely respectful, courteous and professional. All three exhibited a strong knowledge of the work being done, and we were overall happy with the results as the project moved along. Although we were not living in the home, I did go by the house pretty much daily to check on status and how things were looking. Typically I did this later in the day, trying to stay out of the way as much as possible. I did catch a few minor things that needed attention, but overall found the guys to be very thorough. The only thing of any significance related to the bathroom. In the bathroom, the tub, shower and vanity were all matching cultured marble. We had the tub and shower replaced, but due to financial constraints decided not to replace the vanity at this time. One evening I went by, only to find the vanity with the rest of the materials taken out of the bathroom. Actually makes sense...it would stand to reason that if we were replacing the tub and shower, the old vanity, made of the same material, would also come out. Anyway, I contacted Jerry that evening, and went by the next day to find the vanity back in place, looking like it had never gone anywhere. Overall, no big deal.
After the first week, Jerry was on site quite a bit, and after two weeks two other gentlemen were also on the project...Roger, and I apologize, but I cannot recall the other person's name. Of particular note, those two had obviously worked a lot together, as they did outstanding work, particularly in the bathroom.
Okay...two other notes before I get to the end. First, Steve and Jerry both gave us wonderful ideas on things we could do that would add unique touches to the finished product, both of which turned out to be awesome. Steve had a great idea on how to do some of the flooring and was very proactive in asking questions and getting information before proceeding, and Jerry offered ideas on the tub and shower enclosures that turned out to really add to the finished look. Second thing...I mentioned several "surprises" above. There were a few things that turned up as the project went along. For the most part, these were things nobody short of Superman with his x-ray vision could have seen. One was the back windows. We had done a less than stellar job of sealing around the back windows, which allowed water to get in and cause damage to some of the woodwork. This in turn caused leaking into the home. What a blessing that God sent a monster rain storm (remenber that storm as we go through this unbelievable heat wave) while the guys were at the house. Had that not happened, we wouldn't have found out about the leaking until well after the fact...when it would have ruined the wood flooring. Another example was some of the less than wonderful wiring done when the house was first built. In both cases Agape did the necessary repairs with minimal effect on the finish date. There was additional expense as a result, but that wasn't a surprise. We fully expected to find some things, so were prepared for that eventuality. Overall, the "surprises" along with a few additional things we asked Jerry to do added about $3,000 to the final labor cost. It's very important to mention that the additional cost was fine and in no way a "miss" on Agape's part. These were all things that, as I said above, we would have no way of knowing about beforehand (they were basically "hidden" problems), and were all things that had to be corrected.
Okay...the project is now complete, and the only thing I can say is WOW. With the exception of some things we did not address at this time (exterior paint and landscaping, replacing lighting, basic exterior concrete work) the home looks amazing...it looks like a new house, not one built in 1986. I wish I could post pictures on here, it looks so good. Most amazing of all, the bathroom looks like it belongs in a full service spa! Part of that credit goes to our son and daughter-in-law, as they chose the tile and fixtures and did something really unique with the trim in the shower, but Jerry and the guys put it all together, and they did an absolutely amazing job.
I'm sure there are some things I've missed in my detailed story, but let me just say that Becky, Jerry and all the guys associated with Agape did an incredible job on our home. In all phases of this project, we found them, without exception, to be courteous, thorough, knowledgeable, excellent communicators, and understanding of our needs relating to time and cost. Their work is high, high, high quality. I should also mention that their bid (and materials estimate), were both right on...other than the structural surprises we found, they did a wonderful and thorough job on the bid.&
There were no big surprises during the course of the project (which is a good thing!). In order to save money and use some materials we already had, they allowed us to supply some materials (tile, trim and wall paint, light fixtures, cabinet hinges) while they supplied other materials (boards for under the tile, moulding, cabinet paint and primer, etc.). Prior to beginning the project, Jerry sat down with us to discuss what we needed to get and how much, and what they would be supplying. During the course of the project they checked on my satisfaction with their progress and their work, and if I found things to be fixed (for example, touching up paint), they took care of it promptly. Before wrapping up the project, they made sure we were happy with everything they did.
Working with Agape was a very positive experience.
"In response to the tiling job, we tiled the floor, complete shower and bath surround. You may view our work for yourself under our portfolio photos or more clearly on our website we posted entitled “partial bath remodel” and make your own decision, we are very happy with our work. We did have an issue with the grout. It had some discoloration in a few areas after drying. We have done hundreds of tile jobs and never had this particular issue. However, we cut it out and re-grouted and the following day and still had the same discoloration with that particular color of grout. We consulted with numerous tile installers and went as far as to call the manufacturer of the major tile industry located here in Dallas as to why this particular color of grout kept discoloring. It is our consensus, after talking with tile experts and the manufacturer, that the grout color was faulty. We told the homeowner we would be happy to do whatever it took to make it right; however, they chose not to have us continue and paid us the balance owed. We, on our own initiative, deducted $200 from the balance for the grout even though they did not request it as we always want to do what is right. In addressing the “holes issue”, these were not holes at all, but rather two 1/32” slits in the adjacent wall which were made while moving the vent stacks in order to install the two recessed medicine cabinets. The slits were made by the saw blade while cutting the pvc vent stack. To repair the two 1/32 inch slits, took approximately 5 minutes. We told the customer about these two slits before they ever knew or saw it. On the plumbing, our award winning master plumber of over 25 years, assisted in all phases of the plumbing project. We feel our homeowner, who we respect their opinion as an “electrical engineer”, may not realize the paper documents from the actual hands on construction reality. We do not agree and are very disappointed with the grade given by the homeowner."
