It is a very BIG decision to make when finding the team of people that will build your home! 1. Will they care as much as you do, if not more? 2. Can they realize the quality that I expect? 3. Are they willing to guide me through the decisions that will make a difference at the end since I cannot see past the moment at hand? 4. Are they experts at what they do? 5. Will they care?? The answer to all those questions, when dealing with Mattern and Fitzgerald, is a resounding: “YES!” It took a year to build our home and the process was as smooth as we could have hoped it to be. AND…we continue to reach out with questions and Jason Mattern and his team are VERY available and VERY supportive. When you are building the place you will call home, there is nothing more important and Jason and his team know this. And you feel it EVERY time you interact with him and his team. There are uncomfortable conversations that are had when building a home and making changes and it is a LOT of money that you are committing to a project. NO ONE knows this more and makes you feel that they understand this throughout the process than Mattern and Fitzgerald. They are still in the game and I will always send people their way because I know that they build a quality home that they will stand by… even AFTER they are done with the project and that they communicate well and are not afraid to have tough conversations about the process. Jason, Brett, Kallee and Tracey made our lives a little richer. Thank you all for making this HUGE endeavor something that we look back on fondly and would do it again…with YOU! XO The Duke’s

The building of our dream house went beyond our expectations. Mattern and Fitzgerald took care of the process from bidding to contract then the custom building process. We went to a series of meetings with them until the final contract was signed. Their schedule for completing the house was spot on. There were a few hiccups here and there but were worked out to the benefit of both customer and builder. Also, the sub-contractors were good and kept the construction area relatively clean. The supervisor/foreman kept us informed throughout the process and that was very helpful. It kept us in the loop for our peace of mind. If we were going to build another house, we would definitely use Mattern and Fitzgerald again. It's too bad we can't build another house - that was fun! Thank you to the people that made it happen. We want to thank Jason Mattern, Tracy, Brett, Rick and the office people that we talked to but never got introduced. We are enjoying our hill country house.

Our initial point of contact was Jason Mattern. Jason, along with our architectural firm, helped us to define the building project in detail. Two other members of the M&F office team, Kallee Crow and Tracey MacBee, were a constant source of I information and assistance. They kept the administrative portion of the build flow functioning smoothly. And the individual who spent the most time with us, was our project manager, Matt Courpas. Throughout all stages of the build process Matt was an active listener with an eye for detail. From the beginning, he was totally professional, very knowledgeable, easy to work with, and always carried a great attitude. Even more importantly, he focused onone particular goal: that we, the customer, end up with the best possible outcome. Needless to say, we are delighted with the results and would highly recommend the M&F team to anyone wishing to build in the Texas Hill Country.
Description of Work: Mattern and Fitzgerald custom builders was contracted to build two buildings: a primary residence and a multipurpose building (machine shed and hobby room). Both were constructed on a lot in a rural subdivision. M&F also worked closely with the architectural firm during the site planning and placement of both buildings.

Our home is unfortunately next to a home construction project conducted by Mattern and Fitsgerald. The construction has gone way over the original timetable I understand, and is now going on one year. The home site/construction is on a slope uphill of our property. The first problem began when the site clearing began, and huge boulders rolled-down and knocked down part of our fence. Our fence actually stopped some of these massive bouders from rolling further into our yard. My wife and grandson would not walk in that part of the yard for fear from more boulders and debris rolling down into our fence/yard. Also we had to limit access to our dog from going outdoors because of the busted fence. For almost the first half of the construction project, Mattern and Fitsgerald did not install the required sediment barriers around the construction site. The barriers were only installed after I said something. A new problem occured after some rain. Soil and gravel eroded off of their construction site and washed into our yard traveling as far as 150 feet down-hill during one storm. The wash-out and debris also washed-out the crushed granite that we had on a trail along the fence. We asked the builders to provide some new crushed granite to replace our loss, but they denied any responsibility. They increased the slope/gradient, tore-off the vegetation, did not erect the sediment barriers, and then they claimed that they actuallly reduced the erosion by building a house up-hill! Also, over the past year I have been picking up trash that was thrown-in, and blown-in to my yard. It appears that some of the workers stuffed debris under my fence into bushes. As an aside, I understand that there have been significant cost over-runs, and issues with the new home. The builders did eventually fix my fence almost a year after construction started. I had to go over the fence damage post by post with them before the repair was done. However they continue to refuse to accept any responsibility for the erosion, and crushed granite loss. I have photos and copies of all correspondences documenting this issue. I believe you can learn about companies in how they treat people in small things - the same approach and ethics tend to carry forward on the big things. If you should decide to do business with Mattern and Fitzgerald, I would think it's a good idea to secure your own lawyer before signing anything.

Response from Mattern & Fitzgerald
Mattern & FitzGerald Custom Builders prides itself on our fairness and reputation to those that we provide services to and those in the communities where we perform work. We did not provide any services to [member name removed]. We did build a home on a neighboring piece of property to [member name removed]. During the construction process there was some minor damage done to a boundary fence between [member name removed]and our customer by one of our subcontractors. Immediately after the damage was done, we met with [member name removed] and sent him email correspondence that the subcontractor would make the repairs to the fence upon completion of our work on the neighboring property. [member name removed] said that was acceptable and he asked if he would be notified and present when the repairs were being done. In the meantime, the subcontractor did make some temporary repairs to the fence at the areas that were compromised. Upon completion of the project, as discussed and agreed upon with the neighbor, the subcontractor did come out and made the repairs to the fence. [member name removed] was notified when they were going to be on site. [member name removed] met us at the site, we also asked him to walk us through the areas of his concern, so we could make the repairs. The fence was restored to a condition that was superior to the original condition when we started the work on the neighboring lot. There was a silt fence installed on the construction site to control erosion. [member name removed] contacted us after an event that occurred toward the end of May 2013. It was the largest rainfall amounts ever recorded in San Antonio for a 24 hour period. The airport reported in excess of 11 inches of rainfall in that 24 hour period. [member name removed] claimed our activities are what caused the erosion on his property, not the record rainfall. The city of San Antonio was shut down, downtown was flooded, and it was a disastrous event. We met [member name removed] at the site during the Memorial Day weekend, the day after, when he was concerned about some of his crushed granite areas immediately following this event. We viewed these request as being unfair and not indicative of any activities that we did on the neighboring lot. This was an act of God and would have happened, and did happen all throughout town, regardless of our activities. As an organization, we are extremely fair, good stewards of what we are provided, and give hundreds of thousands of dollars every year to churches, charities, children, and less fortunate people in our community. We have been and will always be responsible for our actions. We will also continue to take care of people in our community. As for the comments about the cost overruns and construction going over the original timetable, this information is inaccurate. We finished the contract and the construction activities within the contract timelines. The contract was a fixed cost contract and we are not aware of any issues with the house as the previous post alluded to. It is unfortunate that I am having to respond to this posting, however let it be known that Mattern & FitzGerald is a God fearing organization, that stands behind its work, its actions, and will always be there for the community and those around us.

Mattern $ Fitzgerald Custom Builders constructed our dream retirement home. From our initial meeting with (Keith), we felt confident with the sincerity and trust worthiness of the company. Prior to construction beginning, Ben, the Architect showed us our vision in his initial design, and his final design exceeded our expectations. Although we resided in Maryland throughout the construction process, we were very involved on a daily basis, because the company has a user-friendly we site that connects the client to the job site and its administrative process. From Maryland, we were actually able to see all phases of building from pouring of the foundation to watching the cabinets being installed. The site manager (Casey) was exceptional and kept us updated on a daily basis. The entire Mattern staff was extremely attentive and efficient to every detail associated with building the home; they kept us in the loop every step of the way. Upon seeing the finished product and watching the glow in my wife's eyes, it was immediately apparent that our expectations had been exceed in all areas. During the final walk through, the builder immediately made on the spot.touch-ups, even though there were very few to be made. This is the point where (Mike and Mathew) get to shine;, Please believe me, they are great. Finally, as we sit and look around our home today, a year and half after move in, we consistently compliment the quality of work done in our home. We are also thankful for (Jenny) our designer assigned by the builder. She was with us every step of the way and gave outstanding assistance in selecting colors and materials for the home. "Service after the Sale" is often used by many companies; Mattern and Fitzgerald should have developed that slogan because they are the best at it. We had a choice of builders; we are fortunate that we chose Mattern and Fitzgerald Custom Builders. Lonnie and Alyson Winley

We interviewed several custom home builders prior to our build. Mand F landed the job based on word of mouth and previous homes built with happy customers. We spoke with a few couples that we knew through friends and they gave Mand F high marks. The planning stages were well thought out, with no gaps in communication. Mand F wanted most details to be made up front, so there were fewer problems down the road. The bulding process was amazing! Only minor issues came up (like any custom home). I remember Jason Mattern saying, "This home, or any custom home, has never been build before. Therefore, there are bound to be some minor kinks to be worked out." There were very few minor kinks. Their experience showed every step of the way. It was complete in 8 months as promised. The end product was of high quality, no doubt!! I am somewhat of a handyman, and I have yet to find any problems with the home thus far (30+ days out). I have been able install my own stuff (eg. drawer hardware, dog fence) and NOT have to go back and fix the poor workmanship of the builder. Our previous building experience was horrible. They would overcharge everything and the quality was that of a 2 year old. Utilmately, we are extremely pleased with the Mand F building process and end product. We plan to use Mand F again in a few years to build a casita addition. Thank you to Jason Mattern, Brett, Brenda W., Kendra (Ferguson), Matt and Michael, Brandi, Kallee, Linda, Marcell (Insane Stain). Your teamwork and customer service is top notch!! Thank you The Pattons

Too bad the circumstances turned out this way.
Description of Work: Job on infrastructure was excellent. Installation the best. Finish work not so great and since that is what I see everyday. I am constantly reminded of the poor quality. (Paint drips, un painted areas, gaps between flooring and door jams, crooked tiles etc). Already replacing some things due to quality even in garage area. For this reason I lowered their score. In the beginning the customer service was great and for the most part the staff is great but could not resolve the quality issues. Also I felt their crews were deceptive in trying to explain away the poor quality.
