Very well. The employees were helpful, the trees were delivered on schedule, the employees delivering and planting did a professional job, the written instructions were very helpful, and the trees are now (three years later) well-established and growing. The planters were careful to position the trees to give the best views. PS Just walking through the grounds of Ted's Trees is delightful. A friend recommended them, based on her good experience.
Description of Work: I purchased two trees (one Monterey Oak and one cedar elm). I went to Ted's Trees, where a helpful employee helped me find the varieties I was looking for and helped me select good specimens. I was given detailed instructions on caring for the trees until they got established. I paid for delivery and installation as well as the trees. (Delivery and installation charges were half the price of the trees.)

Ted's has a great selection of trees of all sizes. I was very happy to find a tree that would look established from day 1. I was impressed with the installation guys. I'm east of 35 and don't have a lot of rock in the ground. They dug the hole -- 4' deep and 6' diameter -- with shovels in about and hour and they quite skillfully tilted the tree to get it under the power/cable lines (the tree was lifted by a crane-like contraption). And the guys got the tree level and lined up nicely. The tree has been in for 6 months now and it is looking great.
Description of Work: I purchased a large oak tree (7" diameter and at least 25' tall) from Ted's.

Trees and bushes he planted are having problems. Have to water bushes and plants quite frequently. The weeds have overtaken the yard. I've had to weed the backyard on my own. One time we had three people take 3.5 hours weeding and still did not complete. Went on vacation three weeks and came back, had someone do the watering while I was gone, and the weeds had come back furiously. Never thought in a million years it would be this bad. Called up Ted prior to the vacation about the situation and wanted things set right per the warranty that was given as part of the zero-scaping deal. When I asked for work to be done as part of the warranty the response I got was to "sue me."

I have used Ted's Trees to move trees in my yard on numerous occasions and I have purchased several trees from their nursery. Ted knows his business and can move trees that others will not attempt. Moving mature trees is always risky but I have had a high survival rate with their services.

We have gone through of records for Nov. 2013 and we have no record of a customer by this name or address. Once an invoice is paid we schedule work within a 1 week time frame. The only time it's longer than 7 days is if a customer requests a date due to building/moving/etc.

We have no records of speaking with Kathryn Knox. Any time we get a request for tree removal we ask for a photo of the tree to be emailed to us so we can have an idea if it's a tree we can remove. At that time our office staff will call and set up an appointment with Ted or Tom. We have no records of a call being made.

A friend recommended Ted's trees. It's a nice place to shop for trees -- they have a large selection, ample space so that the trees aren't crowded, and helpful staff. They also give purchasers a sheet of information about caring for the trees. The delivery and planting were on schedule and the planting looked well done. My only complaint is that the information sheet could be a little more detailed -- it tells how frequently to water, but not how much each time. Also, although the instructions recommend using a water meter, there are no instructions on how to use it appropriately -- in particular, what readings are too little or too much.

.They trimmed some of the trees, which Ted had said they would BUT there are trees in the front that are still touching the roof and scrape the shingle every time the wind blows. At first I was pleased with the new turf and the work, punctuality etc. However I still have not received any paperwork about the sprinkler system or any invoice or receipts. Also the controller was installed in the garage and worked for approximately 5 days before it went dead. The licensed contractor, Tom, came back out and rigged it up with an extension cord to my garage roof outlet (in the overhead garage door opener light). He said he would come back in a couple of days to bring the packet of paperwork for the system and to do something more suitable with the cord etc. I have not heard anything since(almost 2 months now) and I am somewhat annoyed.. At the time the system cut out he stated that I should call an electrician and have a new outlet put in the garage but if there was a problem with the outlet they should have said that in the first place when he came out to survey the yard and the outlets forthe sprinkler system and since the cost was $600 more than Ted had said it would be I certainly couldn't afford to get an electrician out either. The system works but having an extension dangling from the ceiling is far from ideal. Because of this I wouldn't recommend them to anyone and wouldn't use them again.

Requested tree trimming of aging oaks in my yard. Though they stacked the cut limbs nicely for rubbish pickup, they left A LOT of limbs in the tree that clearly were in need of removal (hanging over other limbs, bunched disportionately together). The appearance of the trees were not visually improved but did meet a request to let more sun light in for the grass. I ended up climbing up a ladder and cutting some limbs my self. I got a call back from them saying they saw I did that and expressed a desire to do more tree work for free, but they have not made good on that yet. UPDATE: Worker called recently promising to make good on trimming more for free, but did not come and do so. Also requested they pickup and spread some high grade compost in the yard. What I ended with was city low-end, human waste (called Alamo compost i think) compost and it was poorly spread through out my yard. They actually ran out before finishing the yard and didn't offer to complete it. I'm still trying to knock down clumps of this stuff that was piled too high or just hard to break down clumps. I know what it's called b/c I asked it's name and where it came from. That must have triggered a conscious in them b/c they called back saying they overcharged me for it. Would they do that if I didn't have the ability to check up on what the product was? Don't think so.

I hesitate in writing this review, however, I think it's important for others who may have small jobs to know that this company is not interested in doing a small job. I'll leave it to Angie's List if they publish this. I contacted this company 3 times through Angie's List. I finally heard back from them, and the following is their response. "Sorry about getting back to you so late. Our hydro machacine is broken and we are not focusing on repairing it right now due to cost. We are currently booked for the next 2 months and the calls are pouring in. Doing a small job is not to our best interest, especially if it involves hydromulchig. We are behind because of the rains. Again, I apologize and hope you can understand our position. Thank you, Ted." I specifically searched for hydro seeding, so if they aren't really offering this service I feel they should remove it from their "services offered" section so as not to waste people's time.

I was recommended to Ted's Trees by a contractor friend. I'd mentioned that I was looking at buying trees from Home Depot and I was assured that Ted's was a much better option. When I arrived at Ted's tree lot, Ted himself greeted me in person and took me to see the live oaks I was interested in. I have to mention that the tree lot is huge. There are hundreds if not thousands of trees growing, of all types so there is an incredible selection. The live oaks he showed me were excellent, with large, well-developed canopies and clean, green leaves. We negotiated and I ended up with three trees for the price of two. The trees themselves are vastly superior to anything I could have gotten at Home Depot or Lowes, and much larger than I would have gotten at HD or elsewhere for the same price. The install service was excellent. Ted's sent 5 guys to install the trees and had everything done in one afternoon. I was there to meet the crew, we agreed on placement and I left. When I came back the trees were in their holes, in exactly the right positions, backfilled with mulch that was properly shaped to retain water, and carefully staked. The work area was clean and there was no trace of them having been there. The only hiccup was that we had to keep rescheduling the install due to rain, and the crew showed up unplanned. But, whatever. That was a function of multiple reschedulings. Up to that point they had done a good job of proactively staying in contact with me to coordinate the job. This is a locally owned business with excellent prices, better product than the chains and solid install services. I will use them again.

Ted's crew did a very professional job of planting the two trees in our backyard, in very rocky ground, and including installation of stakes and raised watering collar around the trees. Ted also gave regular care suggestions on feeding and watering of the trees. Price did seem high but Ok with the quality service and aftercare.

We didn't know what kind of tree to purchase. Following multiple consultations w/various experts, we decided to purchase 3 italian cypress. Since they are not the easiest trees to find, we located Ted's Trees and were quite surprised at the quality of the selection, the level of personal service and their reputation around Austin. They helped us get everything we needed!!!!
Description of Work: Purchased three trees. They offered for a fee to transport and plant. We declined the planting service. They gave us fertilizer and excellent instructions. They truly stand behind their products and services.

The purchases went very well. We helped by Max, who seemed to be fairly knowledgeable, and was very helpful and patient. He spent whatever time we needed to ask questions, look at trees, etc. The last purchase, the 2nd Texas ash, was done almost sight unseen - I had viewed several in the 3.5" caliper category, all around 15 - 18ft, but actually did the purchase over the phone, and I let Max select the one he recommended. When it showed up at my home, it was closer to 4" caliper, and 18ft tall, yet for the 3.5" price we agreed upon over the phone. All installations went very well. Two were delayed, one was delayed twice, all due to rain. Each time Ted's receptionist called the day prior to reschedule. I was only home during the 2nd Texas ash install. Yet all installs were of good quality, even with my not being present. (I had a business associate, a nursery owner, check on the first install, but he wasn't present the whole time.) Each time the trees were positioned exactly where I had marked them to be, and oriented so that the sparser part was facing where it would get the most sun and fill in. Each tree was well staked, and the root ball area was covered with mulch, and a mulch berm surrounding the mulch pad. The berm and pad were level, so I can water the trees by just laying a hose in the berm. Very professional looking install.
Description of Work: Service dates were actually Dec. 2009, Jan. 2010 & Feb. 2010. We purchased several trees & had them installed. In Dec. we had installed a large Texas ash (~20ft high, ~4.5" caliper trunk) (front yard), a cherry laurel (~8ft) & a Texas redbud (8ft, ~2" caliper). In Jan. we had installed a crabapple (~7ft, ~2" caliper). In Feb. we had installed another large Texas ash (~18ft, ~3.5" caliper) (back yard). All but the cherry laurel were "B&B" (ball & burlap).

We bought the trees and had them planted at the end of September. The Maple, Maple and Cherry Laurel (all planted in our backyard) are spectacular. The Mountain Laurel (planted right outside our front door) didn't fair so well. One branch died almost immediately and then the rest started dropping leaves in December. The first guy from Ted's who looked at it in January gave us some bad advice (more water), which simply sped up the dying process. A couple of weeks ago another guy (Alfonso) came out to look at it and diagnosed the problem as too much water. Because the tree is in the most noticeable spot in our front yard (and because we'd followed their care recommendations, which actually made things worse), I told Alfonso I wanted it to be replaced. (The trees are "guaranteed," but the receipt doesn't specify what, exactly, that means.) Alfonso made arrangements for it to be replaced and they brought another tree out yesterday and planted it.

It went pretty well at the start. Ted's Trees is a huge 10 acre paradise of trees and other bushes and plants. We located the tree we wanted from the help of a nice gentleman. No problems paying for it and scheduling delivery and installation of the tree. The problem started with Ted's keeping to the schedule we both agreed. The delivery was supposed to take place between 9am-1pm. They were a no-show and without a curiosity call that they were running late. When we called around 11pm to make sure they were still coming before 1 pm, they were sure they would be there. One o'clock comes and goes and still no tree. We call again and they offer to deliver from 1pm-4pm. But this was not going to work because we had already made plans that could not be broken. So, with that bump in the road out of the way, we finally got our tree installed the next day by two of Ted's workers. They worked fast, patiently answered our questions and cleaned up real well. If it wasn't for the messed up delivery I would give Ted's Trees an A+, but it's been decreased to a C-.
