Wanted to start with a bid on an irrigation system, but also had a large retaining wall that needed to be replaced and apparently that wasn't big enough for them. Guess us little guys don't matter to this business.

+ 0 moreThey did an outstanding job. We weren't sure exactly what we want, we knew kind of the certain look and they were able to design it. Their workers were just craftsman. The patio was so much better than what we could've imagined. The representative that came was quite professional and just make sure it happens what we want to do. We were very pleased. It was expensive but worth it.
Description of Work: We had patios done last summer by Southern Landscape. They also did the porch and the landscaping, they mowed the flower beds--they did the whole flower beds and new grass in front and back.

Description of Work: I used Southern Landscape for the design of my proposed landscape conversion of the front and side yards and the driveway edging from grass to zero-scape. The cost of the drawing by the landscape architect was $500. When I attempted to get clarity on the budget, which I was shown in some part after revision of the first design, I did not get a clear picture of the cost of materials and labor... more of a listing (ex., dirt, river rock, fiber filter), but not the amounts or cost of each, or the cost of the labor. When the summary budget of all five sections of the design were presented to me, I could only tell that the proposed cost of the flowers was going to be $900, even though I'd said I only wanted about six plants and not what appeared to be about 50 plants. In summary, I felt as though all the work and materials had been rough estimates of what they thought they might get me to spend. If the budget detail had been clear, I might have used them, but instead, I was given a referral to a less expensive designer, who would have done the same job for about $8,000 (or $10,000 less than Southern Landscape's estimate). I ended up having another landscaper do virtually the same work plus a number of other additions (two drainage systems, a walkway to the back, the entire driveway, a skirt for my deck and for my shed, a new door for the shed, tree work, etc) for $7,500. (The job was finished in the fall, so it was too late to plant anything, although I have priced the flowers and bushes that I do want to add in the spring, and they will only cost about $200. That price includes the cost of the installation.) If money were no object and I could have obtained a real itemized budget, I might have used Southern Landscape. I felt frustrated with my inability to obtain that information, though, and realized that they didn't want to work on my property because I didn't want to spend what they wanted to charge. They were very nice but just very expensive.

+ -1 moreOur new cedar deck, built by the carpentry team of Mauricio, Bob, and Carmen, is absolutely beautiful. The craftsmanship and attention to detail greatly exceeded our expectations. The trim detail around the decking and stairs was totally unexpected. These guys worked hard, long days, despite the July heat, and even sang while they worked. Scott Cassel provided several alternatives for replacing our rotting deck. He carefully inspected the pre-existing infra-structure to determine which parts could be reused without jeopardizing structural integrity. Not only did this help control cost, but reduced the construction material taken to the land fill. He recommended replacing our rickety wood rails with wrought iron which upgraded both the appearance and safety of our elevated deck. We love our deck and greatly appreciate the quality work done by Southern Landscape.
Description of Work: Rebuilt a 2200 sf cedar deck that surrounds an above-ground pool.

The lack of attention to the details requested and the sting of an upfront design fee - not worth it.
Description of Work: Charged for upfront design services for an outdoor kitchen and then delivered three pictures with no detail list for pricing discussion as it was well over a stated budget.

+ -1 moreDerek showed up as scheduled and took required measurements and advised he'd get back to me with an estimate by Wednesday of the following week. Wednesday passed with no word from Derek. Monday of the following week I emailed Derek asking when I could expect the estimate.....no response. Finally, I called and talked with Derek. He promised I'd get the estimate the next day. Never got it. Very disappointing as I wasted almost two weeks waiting for their estimate. If Southern Lanscape didn't want my business at least they could have been professional enough to tell me up front they were too busy. Granted, this was a small job (about a 14' x 14' pergola) but I believed their website ad that stated and quot;No job too big, no job too smalland quot;.

+ 2 moreErnest (company President) and Scott (Designer) scheduled an appointment for the day after i requested a quote. They spent time speaking with my wife and I about our expectations and helped us with suggestions and guidance. They spent a great deal of time making measurements and taking photos of the existing site and, within a week, came back and presented detailed CAD plans and drawings. They worked with us to make modifications to accommodate our preferences and our budget. The final design was beyond our expectations and the final product was as well. Scott continued to work closely with us and the crew throughout the construction. Upon finalization of plans, work commenced within another week. The daily crew was led by Fico who treated the project as if it were at his own home. The craftsmanship and attention to detail was extraordinary. The entire job was completed in 14 days. All work was done by hand with no heavy machinery to cause damage to the property. The final outcome is fantastic. The stonework on the kitchen matches the original masonry perfectly. It appears that the structure was part of the original home construction. The living space and water feature appear to be truly unique and fit perfectly into our vision. We enjoy both every day. Thanks to the team from Southern Landscape and Gardens for such a great job.
Description of Work: Two projects were involved and were worked simultaneously. One was an outdoor kitchen built on an existing concrete patio. This involved building a counter area with stone to match the existing stone of the house, extending plumbing for water and propane, extending electricity for appliances and outlets, staining existing concrete and acquiring and installing various components including a propane grill, propane side burners, a sink, storage compartments, slide out ice chest, and a Big Green Egg. The other involved the creation of an outdoor living space of approximately 400 sq. ft. in an area that had been lawn. This was designed to have a semi-permeable cover and a water feature that could be "seen and heard" from the house.

+ 1 moreAfter hiring Southern Landscape to create a design for our new front yard, he came back with not only that but plans for a major expansion of our front porch, as he considered our existing porch undersized. He had a point but that was not really why we hired him. We liked his plans for the front yard and asked him for a cost estimate. The estimate for both the porch and the new landscaping seemed awfully high; the estimate for the landscaping alone seemed very expensive. At that point we went out and obtained cost estimates from two other landscape companies, based on Southern Landscape's design. Both of their estimates were very close to each other and a full 40% below Southern Landscape's estimate. We have selected one of those companies to install our new landscaping. (We'll build the new front porch when we win the lottery!)
Description of Work: We hired a landscape architect at Southern Landscape to create a design for our new front yard. It was to include a major decrease in lawn area and added new xeriscaping.

+ 0 moreWe solicited quotes from 5 contractors on a fairly large backyard project. Other contractors pushed back on many of our ideas and didn't seem willing to work with what we envisioned. My wife and I are not landscape and carpentry professionals, so one of the main reasons we chose Ernest's company was his can-do attitude and willingness to handle the design work. They use a CAD system which adds some cost to the project, but is immensely valuable for visualization and refining the look and feel of the design. As the project progressed, Ernest and his team addressed all our questions and didn't complain about two design changes we requested. They also worked hard to obtain the necessary building permits. Overall, we were looking for a company capable of high quality work but also the ability to handle the whole project with minimal worry for my family. Southern Landscape did a great job on our project and I would not hesitate to use them again.
Description of Work: Design and build a replacement deck and screen porch, build a raised vegetable garden, transplant existing trees and plant new trees for screening.
