Description of Work: |I wouldn't have commented after the passage of so much time (over three years), but a close friend of mine told me about his recent experience with Renewal by Andersen. His description of their work had some similarities to mine. Immediately after my installation, I documented some of the things that characterized the behavior of the crew that did the installation as well as that of their manager (?), the man who contacted me after the job was done. | |I stayed out of the way of the crew but passed by occasionally to observe the work. I noticed that there were large gaps of an inch or more on each side of the two new windows in the dining room. When I said something about it, I was first told brusquely that, yes, there were large gaps but that I needed to take it up with the measuring tech or the salesman or somebody else. The new windows, which had been custom built, were too small. Unfortunately, the old windows had been destroyed when they removed them and now the new windows were too small. | |One of the workmen chose to argue with me that it was only half an inch on each side, not an inch. And when I assured him that it was wider than that, he argued that they had to make the window that much smaller than the opening because of a small point of rock on the exterior (which he didn't show me because it didn't exist). He said that they measured the smallest opening in the rock...so if one bit of rock was sticking out farther than the rest, that is where they would measure. Then he decided to tell me that the window couldn't have been made any larger in a "glider" style because that was as big as the factory could make a glider. I told him that the salesman or measuring tech should have told us if that was the case. | |I suggested that the gaps should at least have some wood filler (1"X4"s or some strips of plywood) in them (firmly attached to the 2"X4" framing) to stabilize the windows better. Twenty or thirty minutes later, Todd Cable told me that they had put 2"X4"s in on both sides. I don't believe there was room for 2"X4"s on both sides, but nevertheless, there was still a sizable gap (about an inch) on one side of each of the two window installations. When I gently suggested that it could use some more wood filler, Todd Cable told me bluntly that he couldn't do that because he didn't have a wood planer in his truck and that he had already put 2"X4"s in it. He also said that my walls had a lot of movement in them and that if they put any additional wood in the gaps that the movement of the house might crack the windows. I told him that if my house was moving that much, there would be big cracks (meaning substantial, wide cracks) in the drywall. Then he pointed out two hairline cracks in the sheetrock (that was 56 years old) to bolster his argument that my walls had a lot of movement in them. The house is founded on rock. It doesn't move much. | |Later, he asked me how far I wanted the sills to extend beyond the window opening, and I said that they should be like they were before...that I had been told it would be replaced just like it had been before they tore it out. He acted like he was annoyed (with me) that he would have to go out to the trash pile and find one of the old sills in order to measure it, but then decided he could, without asking, walk straight into my 25-year old daughter's bedroom in order to measure an existing sill. I had to tell him in a raised, clear voice to stop! | |They set up a radio, playing loud country music without asking if it would bother my daughter and me. | |These men were aggressive, too self-assertive, argumentative, and rude. They acted like big, immature high school boys. I was told to give my check to the painter without asking me if I was satisfied with how the installation had gone. They put their sign in my yard and left. | |Later, the manager or the man who seemed to be in a position of authority called me to ask if I was happy with their work. As I recall, after telling him about my dissatisfaction, I sent him a copy of my documentation, and I don't remember him apologizing or saying anything. | |At the outset, after I had made the appointment for Renewal by Andersen to come out and make their presentation, they sent me an email containing the following statements: |When working with Renewal by Andersen you can expect the following: |1. Of course, I will never use them again, and I will never recommend Renewal by Andersen. And, as I stated, a close friend who just had windows installed by this company said that the new windows were so much smaller than the openings in his house that he insisted on (and received) a five-year guarantee. |
