I chose Northstar on the strength of their on-line reputation on Angie's list and Yelp. Overall, we had an adequate move. The team of 5 arrived on time, worked consistently, and the cost for the move came out less than the estimate. Everyone on the crew was extremely polite. Here is why we are giving them a C: There were 5 people packing our belongings. Some of them provided "A" level packing (like the crew who did the kitchen). Others provided "F" level service. The crew manager did not appear to do much to improve the level of service of the team. For example, we repeatedly had to point out places where they missed packing things, and at one point that was two whole rooms. Some pieces of furniture were taped up with no plastic or blankets, so when we took the tape off, the glue stayed on the furniture. Light bulbs were crushed in tape inside of lights so we could not get the bulb out and had to junk the light. We are still assessing the damage. These are just a few examples of the myriad of odd packing we found. It seemed like they had some inexperienced crew members who were not adequately trained or supervised. Finally, I almost did not use Northstar because they were closed the week before the move, didn't tell me they would be closed one day during the week, and they had no messages indicating they were closed. This was not a problem in the end, but it was worrisome to just have the company shut down with no notice. Northstar has contacted me to discuss the damage. I will update the review once that process is complete.

I just moved my sister from Los Angeles to Albuquerque. Originally I had booked a moving company online that was not based in Los Angeles and there were a multitude of red flags that were making me nervous so I canceled with them and joined Angie's List specifically to find a moving company with whom I would have peace of mind..and that's exactly what I found with NorthStar. I talked to a couple of different people in their office at different times...they were always straight-forward and helpful. Everything they said would happen is what happened...no surprises. I got a call when they said I would from Ilan, who was to do the onsite estimate...he was right on time (a touch early, actually)...we had to communicate back and forth several times following that appointment because it was a complicated inventory and Ilan was having some computer problems...but despite those obstacles, he returned my calls promptly every time and we worked it out. I was very stressed out on the actual day of the move having been up almost around the clock for the previous 2 days trying to be ready for the moving crew and they stayed so calm and steady all day, their presence completely eliminated my anxiety. And I have to add that they treated every piece of furniture with equal care...even when it was obviously something that probably should have been left behind on the curb! Now I know this doesn't always happen but we were given a 10-day window for delivery and they made it on the first day...only 4 days after pick-up...I was so relieved that my sister did not have to be without her things for too long. Whether that was just luck or not, I will never research and compare movers again...i will just call NorthStar.

Oleg and his crew of 2 showed up exactly on time on the scheduled day. After a short period of obligatory paper-signing, he explained how the process was going to work, and they got started wrapping and packing. We couldn't believe how quickly they worked, and how thoroughly and securely everything was wrapped and ready for loading. When they were done, it was difficult to tell what some items even were, since they were wrapped so well. Once completed, they wasted no time loading the truck. I don't need to tell anybody that it gets blazing hot in San Antonio in July, and this day was no exception. It was well over 100 degrees. Aside from a couple of brief breaks, the crew didn't stop working until the truck was securely packed and ready to go. From beginning to end, it probably took about 7 hours (and about 150 rolls of tape!) to complete the job. At the arrival end it was much the same story. The crew, whose name I have forgotten, arrived on time, unloaded and unpacked everything we wanted in the house, placing items exactly where we asked. To our absolute amazement, and despite having been loaded and unloaded from trucks twice, not a single item was broken, scratched, or missing, with the exception of a quarter-sized scuff on the edge of a chair! These guys did an incredible job, and I would not hesitate using them again. In fact, my reason for submitting this review so long after the event was that we had a family emergency going on at the same time as the move that resulted in the death of a parent. In the spring, we'll be faced with emptying their house in St. Pete, FL, and sending its contents to family in Los Angeles, Houston, and Chicago in addition to our own home in Newnan. There is no question who I'll be calling for this work to be completed. Excellent work, NorthStar.
Description of Work: Northstar packed and moved approx 6000 lbs of household goods from San Antonio, TX to Newnan, GA - about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta. Goods moved included many large items: beds, bikes, dressers, an electric piano, hutches and tables, some medium-sized fragile glass and hardwood pieces of furniture and framed pictures, and many small everyday items like silverware, dishes, and glassware. After packing them, they moved them via truck to a warehouse north of San Antonio where our goods were unloaded, and then re-loaded about a week later for transport and delivery to Newnan.

I used them because they were rated so highly on Angie’s List, but I was not happy with them because one of their guys broke a whole box of my dishes and he didn’t even apologies or say he was sorry. I have not done a claim for the broken dishes yet. I was not satisfied with them because I had specifically told them to remember the amount of furniture and that there were around a hundred boxes, but they came out here with just one truck and they did only one move from my house to the storage and I had to plan the move from the storage to the other house myself. They did not plan or have the right number of trucks to complete the other half of the move, so I had to plan that for another day. They should have brought two trucks based on all the furniture and all the boxes that I had told them I would have. I rate them poorly because when they gave me the estimate, it said that they would do the entire thing, but they only did half of my move and they were really rushed while bring the things in. There was a mirror that should have been attached to a dresser, but they did not attach that and were rushing because they were running out of time and had another job the next day, so they just wanted to get out of here. They price was fine and they office was professional, but the quality of their work was not because they did not set up my mum’s bedroom properly and they did not even pack the stuff properly.

Very good experience from start to finish. They moved us from a 2nd floor 2 bedroom condo and had to carry stuff down the elevator to the truck that had to be parked on the street. They moved us to a two-story house and had to carry beds and washing machine up the stairs. The movers worked so hard and didn't complain. Only one champagne glass was broken by them- everything else was fine.
Description of Work: I found NorthStar movers on Angie's List, and they had great reviews so I invited them to come out for an estimate, along with another company we knew about. Don't trust companies that will not come to give an estimate! I read horrible reviews and fortunately knew better. Ilan came and gave an estimate; he was knowledgeable, polite, and professional. I had a 50% off coupon on moving supplies which he honored, and he also told me about a Yelp coupon. He gave a "move only" price where we did all the packing, and a complete pack rate. We ended up buying boxes from Home Depot and packed the easy stuff and stuff I wanted to pack myself. I let them do the kitchen. 4 guys came out and they finished in exactly the time Ilan estimated! My price came right between the $845 and $1118 that Ilan quoted. They wrapped the furniture very well, dismantled the beds, and loaded the truck very efficiently. They are were nice and polite. The foreman, Herman, has 7 years experience with the company and kept the younger guys hustling. It was a very good moving experience. I tipped the 3 guys $30 and gave $40 to Herman because they work so hard. Would definitely use them again. I had another estimate from Northern Van Lines and they came in $200 higher, and didn't have the coupons.

We had three items broken - very minor - a picture glass, a T-bar - and a dining room chair is cracked on the seat - However, very minor.
Description of Work: We hired North Star to move us and their sub-contractor to pack - the packers came for two days and packed most of what we had not already packed for approximately $1500.00 - The movers showed up on time - 10 guys - to pack the truck - However, they forgot the key to the side door of the Semi which was blocking our cul de sac .. they finally got the rear door open and started moving boxes into the Semi - Every box was numbered by a sticker before it left the house to go into the Semi -- We had packed lots of book size boxes and the packers had packed lots of other goods - and well packed ... The guys loading the van packed what was left ... including my laptop which I was in process of using (panic - found it before it got too late to locate it again) ... They took special care of my hand made grandfather clock, and my antiques. Our move was from Los Angeles to Southern Oregon - on delivery day there was only two guys to unload our portion of the Semi (they brought the keys). Poor guys they spent the day unloading into the house and finally filled up the garage with the overflow - we were unpacking boxes as fast as we could but couldn't keep up. The guys took away the packing materials from the furniture (shrink wrap, blankets, tape, cardboard etc) ... Too bad they couldn't stay and help unpack all the book boxes - we are still working on them three months later ... My advise to moving - edit out the volume of "stuff" and be sure your baseboards are dusted !!! ... you never see those things till you start emptying the house ... (LOL)

These guys are true pros. Gil was my salesperson who came out and gave me an estimate. His communication is immaculate. He is incredibly responsive and professional. They by far gave me the best rate for my move and it was a binding rate meaning they couldn't change it after weighing the goods. A lot of movers pull that "bait and switch." The guys who came out to my house in L.A. were amazing. They worked fast and were meticulous, protecting EVERYTHING that needed protecting. The driver was amazing, keeping me informed of his progress the whole way. Even after he lost a transmission he was chipper and kind. They still delivered within the estimated window (well within it!). The crew who unloaded was amazing. Super happy and went above and beyond. They moved things multiple times for me just so they would be where I wanted them. HIRE THIS COMPANY. Don't look anywhere else. From A to Z the whole experience was amazing. I'll only use them in the future!

They packed all of the valuables very well. It took longer than expected, but that is far preferred to recklessness. The shipment arrived on time. The extra people they picked up at the delivery address to help were useless. The original crew was great.

The move too longer than expected. My Guns were locked in a gun case by me the night before.
Description of Work: BEWARE! 2 HANDGUNS went missing. One was recovered two weeks later by the police in possession of a kid with the same name as one that moved me. The other gun is still missing and the corporate office doesn't care... What if the kid moving you has my other gun? They also broke two lamps, a vase, a shelving unit and dented my grill and trash can. I run over a Billion $$ in real estate multifamily homes across the country with all the major management companies and creating safe environments is my job. I am truly ashamed I have to write things like this. PLEASE be careful. They know where I live and how now am I suppose to feel safe after signing a years lease with no exit clause?

Dear Angie’s List Member, Respectfully, we believe your accusations that one of our team members stole guns from you are incorrect or unjustified. Let’s look at the facts; 1) Your local move in Los Angeles took place on July 8th. 2) More than three weeks later, on August 1st, you called our office and claimed the police had one of our movers in custody for possession of your stolen gun. 3) We called the police department and to our surprise and relief found out that the person in custody is not at all our employee. It is very unfortunate that this happened to you, but we don’t believe we had anything to do with your stolen guns. First, in this 3 week span between your move and your call, your guns could have been stolen many times over. In fact, who knows? Your guns could have possibly been missing even before the move took place. Lastly, the suspect in custody does not nor had he ever worked for NorthStar Moving or is in anyway affiliated with our company. From your first initial call to our office you stated a police officer had contacted you to notify you of your stolen gun. When the officer then stated that the suspect in custody is named Anthony, you automatically assumed that this was one of our movers simply because they have the same name. As it turns out, after we spoke with the police officer, the suspect and the mover are NOT the same person. It just so happens that they are both named Anthony. Anthony is a very common name and we do not appreciate being accused of this incident without having any proof. You write in your review that you are “truly ashamed you have to write things like this.” We too are truly ashamed that you accused an innocent person of stealing your guns without proof. The police never concluded that NorthStar Moving had any involvement in this unfortunate event. And as for your demand that we pay for your stolen hand guns and that we pay for a new alarm system; respectfully it is unreasonable and unjustified. We called several movers for estimates when we had to go from Tujunga to our new home in Glendale. Several movers gave us sight unseen quotes on the phone, but Northstar sent Gil to our home where he took a detailed inventory and gave us a not to exceed price, which included a day of packing services as well as the move itself. He was cost conscious and made sure that he staffed appropriately to avoid overtime charges. While he was not the least expensive

Their prices are reasonable (maybe you can find cheaper, but usually you get what you pay for...) and both crews we had were excellent. We have a number of pieces of antique arts and crafts furniture (100+ years old) and they took great care in wrapping and transporting everything. All the guys on both moves were very hardworking and professional. I've had some negative experiences in the past with other companies -- NorthStar is the best moving company I've worked with. As mentioned above, we are planning to use them for another move soon.
Description of Work: We have used NorthStar twice in the past few months (once to move our belongings from our old house to a short-term apartment, and once to move the contents of our garage at the old house into storage) and are planning to use them again for another move very soon (to move into another house and out of our temporary apartment).

They tried to charge me $12,000-$17,000. They said either pay, or it's a no go. A person named Nancy got on the phone, and I thought she would help. I quickly realized she was offering me $205 for my silence if I wouldn't write a negative report on Angie's List or anywhere else on the internet. I am appalled with the type of service that I got.

Dear Angie’s List Member, Respectfully, your review is unjust and inaccurate. The fact that we were forced to refuse to move your belongings last Monday had nothing to do with any amount of money. It was ONLY due to your failure to follow up on your commitment and have someone properly represent you upon pick up (ie: sign the necessary documents, be involved in the process of the move ect.) When you called to arrange the move you told Julie, our client loyalty team member, you are very ill and you would not be able to be in Tennessee and meet our moving team. When Julie worked diligently with you to arrange your move you thanked her for her time and effort and told her how no other moving company would spend the time on the phone with you as she did. When she explained to you that you would need to have someone who can meet us at your storage space, and this person needs to be able to sign the necessary documents for the move, otherwise we are not going to be able to move you, you promised her you will make sure that happens. You even signed a confirmation to that effect in order for Julie to take the reservation for your move. As you know, the person who met our driver at the Tennessee storage space said they are just a storage employee and refused to do anything other than to open the door of the storage space for us. We called and asked for your help and you were not able to help us. We did exactly what we said we would do. If you, on the other hand, stuck to your commitment and had a real shipper representative for us we would have been happy to move you. As it turned out we ended up driving to your storage space in Tennessee, spend a few hours trying to resolve these issues with you on the phone, and turned around empty handed and without pay for our time, drive and efforts. Anyone can imagine how frustrated we are with this whole ordeal which was caused only by your failure to deliver on your promises. As far as the $205, when you told the representative at our operations office how sick you are and how worried you are about having to pay $205 to the storage facility for rent for the month of August, they offered to pay the $205 for you. This was an act of kindness, nothing else. No one at NorthStar Moving was obligated to do this for you in any way. Unfortunately, we feel like you repay our professionalism and yes, kindness in your case, with an untrue and unkind report of the course of event. But you know, that’s okay. That is your right. I still wish you all the best with your life and with your move. I just respectfully believe you should reconsider your position after thinking this through. The three-men team showed up 15 minutes early, which was fantastic, and were very speedy and methodical in loading the furniture. We had a home gym that was upstairs, and a massive refrigerator that needed to be disassembled before it can make it out the doors. The movers handled each of those rooms perfectly and quickly. There were narrow walkways leading to the townhouse, and the movers were careful to lift furniture and appliance overhead to ensure that items are not accidentally dented or damaged by the walkway walls. Overall great experience. Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for movers.

The lead member of the crew worked with us to get as much done as possible with the limited resources available (limited in time, money, packing supplies, and manpower). The crew was hard working, efficient, and effective, absolutely no lolly gagging or time wasting noted. The team leader was polite, understanding, and worked to accommodate our special needs. I would definitely hire them again.

Angie's list had a $75 off coupon deal for Northstar Moving, so we hired them. They showed up on time, moved everything with no trouble and no damage. They had a 4 hour minimum time charge, but that's standard. It turns out that we forgot to use the coupon code when we paid, which meant we ended up paying $150 extra (the cost of the coupon and the lack of a discount). I didn't notice until next week when looking at the receipt that we hadn't applied the coupon. I call them up, and they didn't hesitate to apply it retroactively, and refunded the amount to my credit card within 15 minutes of me talking to them. Great customer service.

These were not the people that I talked to, but based upon my conversation this afternoon, I wish I had! If my present moving company contract does not work out, and there is a glitch to resolve, I definitely WILL call them.

My only complaint is with the customer service rep who confirmed the move the day before. She sounded distracted as she went through the contract with me. She repeated the pick up address as the address we were moving to. I corrected her and told her that it was the wrong address. The next day, the crew showed up at the wrong address! Thankfully it was a local move and the pick up address was not that far away, however it was frustrating because I specifically corrected the rep the day before. My contract I received by email when I scheduled the move was correct, but the one the movers had was wrong. This was annoying, but happened to be the only hiccup in the entire move. The entire move was a great experience. The four men who came to move us were respectful of our things, and they moved quickly and carefully. They took time to wrap our furniture carefully and the only thing that broke was a leg off of one of our couches, but one of the guys gave us glue to fix it. I wasn't present when it happened, but my husband did not seem too worried about it. We have a lot of heavy and expensive furniture/antiques and I was amazed to see how easily these guys pulled it off. These guys work really hard and if you hire them, please be sure to give them a nice tip! Overall it took us approximately 7.5 hours to move including the 30 minute flat travel time they charge. These guys are worth every penny!

I had another moving company flake out on me completely even after I paid them a deposit and set my moving date. I was left in a pickle and needed speedy help to get moved out of my townhome. I found NorthStar Moving company on Angie's List and called them.They were very professional, helping, and were able to book my move for the next day with a $200 deposit paid by credit card.The remaining amounts had to be paid in cash or money order. They showed up when they said they would, they had wrapped all my furniture in tape and/or blankets.Beware they will charge for wrapping of flat screen TVs in a special box and other boxes they may randomly decide to use.Also they will charge a lot for flights of stairs. They really were great though and I was so thankful they came through for me.Some of my stuff had minor damage from the move. One of my Walmart bookcases was pretty much destroyed, but it was crappy quality anyway and only worth about $35 so not a big deal. I hugged, thanked, and tipped them each individually!
Description of Work: On a Wednesday, three men arrived to my townhome in San Antonio, TX, dismantled my bed, wrapped some items in blankets/tape as needed, loaded all my stuff into their truck, and arrived to my new place in Los Angeles, California by that Saturday. They unloaded all my stuff, put the furniture roughly wherever I wanted it arranged in my new place, and helped put my complicated bed back together (Sleep Number Bed/air mattress).

The move went great. The movers were scheduled to pick up our items anytime between 8-10 AM. They got to our place at 7:45 AM to decide where to park the truck, which was great. They were very polite, professional and very quick to move our furniture. The whole move was done in 3 hrs! The service was phenomenal and for a great price. The movers worked hard which is ideal because the total cost of the move is dependent on the time it takes to move. This is my 2nd time using them, and it was a great experience, just like the 1st time. I plan on using them for future moves!

These guys were awesome! They came out to give an initial estimate before a work order had even been filed... an experience I've had with approximately 0 other moving companies. We scheduled the move to begin between 8-10am on a Sunday. So naturally, I expected them to show up at 10:05. To my surprise, a team of 3 guys who could only be described as work horses were there at 8am sharp, ready to go. I can't stress how difficult of a move this was. Aside from dealing with narrow streets and steep hills, there were 3 flights of stairs and a narrow side entry that everything had to be carried through. I'd accumulated quite a bit of furniture and misc. items over the decade I'd been living there. Didn't seem to be a problem for these guys. Have you ever seen someone carry 2 heavy boxes of books on each shoulder going up 3 flights of stairs?! In a word, impressive. I also needed to dispose of a few items (ie: bed, dresser, coffee table, broken office chairs). What could possibly be impressive about that? Well.. I only had to articulate ONCE what I was keeping and what I didn't want to deal with disposing of. And guess what? I haven't seen those items since. More importantly, EVERYTHING else made it to our new home. Did I mention nothing broke? Did I mention that the expensive furniture worth keeping wasn't damaged in any way shape or form? Did I mention our ancient plasma TV that can't be tilted in the slightest and weighs around 80lbs. is still in perfect working order? You expect some casualties in a move. I'm delighted to say we didn't have 1. Once we were loaded, it only took about 1 hour to unload everything to our new home. The quote was for 5.5 hours of work.. we were done in 4. I don't have the words to express how flawless this move went and how satisfied I am with the whole experience. No brainer: 10/10.
