My computer wouldn't start. I found Mike on Angie's List. He was very responsive and we arranged a meeting time. He diagnosed the issue as a hard drive failure and gave me a couple options if I wanted to keep the existing computer. I decided to go ahead with replacing the hard drive and he purchased a quality solid state drive for me from Fry's, formatted and installed it on my computer, and transferred all the data he was able to restore from my failed hard drive. He returned it all to my house within a day or 2. Very fast and effective. Update September 2014: Mike Bacon no longer responds to phone calls or texts and the computer he repaired went on the blink.
Description of Work: Diagnosed problem with existing computer, replaced existing hard drive, restored and transferred data.

I purchased a new router for the upstairs of our house because our Wi-Fi signal was weak or unavailable at times downstairs. Mike Bacon connected the upstairs router successfully and then connected the old router downstairs. As a result, all our wireless devices function more efficiently and at a faster speed.

Mike was very flexible on the time, and was willing to come on a weekend. He suggested he take the computer in question to run diagnostics at his location in order to save time (and money) for me. He suggested a solution, went out and purchased the necessary peripherals and installed them. I called around before selecting him and his prices were consistent with those who were not making house calls.
Description of Work: Computer check to resolve internet connectivity issues, recommedation of solution, installation of peripherals.

I emailed this person on 7/22/10 and called and left a voice mail message on 7/27/10 requesting service. I never heard back from either inquiry as of today, 8/4/10.

That was over three weeks ago and as busy as I was, I'm not going to say there isn't a chance my recollection is wrong and I dropped the ball on this one. Mike tried some fixes on Thursday (April 1). When they didn't work, he thought about the problem over the weekend and was able to fix it in a few minutes, via a remote support connection. It took so little time that he didn't charge for this job; he'll lump it with his next job for us. And you can be sure that we'll turn to Mike the next time we have a computer problem. We're very glad to have found him, thanks to Angie's List.
Description of Work: My wife was unable to view certain links in her Firefox browser. I couldn't solve the problem, so I turned to Mike, who did an excellent job with the installation of our two computers in January. (See my report on 18 Jan 2010.)

This potential client attempted to contact me once on Feb 23rd and one more time on Feb 24th. I contacted the client on the evening of the 24th and explained to him I was unavailable right now and would be tied up on a project until mid-March and apologized for the situation. When I got back in town, I checked in and found this negative report. While I do promise quality work, I'm sorry but I cannot promise to be available every day of the week. Mike asked enough questions to get a good idea about what I needed and then got to work. He stayed long enough to be sure that he had done all that I needed done and that what he worked on actually worked. Did a great job at a reasonable rate. We will use him again if or when the need arrises.

Mike works quietly and efficiently. I told him what we needed and he got it done. The work was spread over two consecutive Saturdays. The main work was done on the first Saturday. We used the computers for a week, found things that needed to be tweaked, and he came back the following Saturday to do the tweaking. It all went very smoothly.
Description of Work: Installed and networked 2 PCs and printers. Moved files, address books, and bookmarks from old PCs to new ones. Installed external hard drive and set up backup routines. Tweaked programs and settings. Recovered and reinstalled old software as requested. Downloaded and installed new software as required.

I regularly build my own home computers and this time ran into a problem where the computer would boot but wouldn't send signal to the monitor. After spending hours on end troubleshooting the problem myself, I called Mike. He was able to come out that evening and set to work reviewing and dismantling the work I had done. He promptly found the problem - a misplaced screw that I never would have noticed - and had my computer up and running in short order. He also took the time to explain some ways I could hook the components up more efficiently next time I build. I'd absolutely recommend him and will call him again if I need assistance.

This took several trips since we had to wait for the new hard drive from Dell. He was always punctual, hard working and professional.
Description of Work: He ran diagnostics on my machine and found out the hard drive was bad. I had just purchased the computer in June. He contacted Dell and had them send a new hard drive since it was still under warranty. He loaded my old files from the bad hard drive onto the new hard drive. He reinstalled my printer driver, email and windows office. He also set the computer to be able to work as a TV again.

I called him on the phone and he immediately recognized the problem, made an appointment for later that day. He arrived on time, fixed the problem and I could not be happier, will not hesitate to call him the next time something in the PC goes awry.

I was in the middle of finals for online classes and my computer died. We also use the home computer for business. I had to replace it and get everything up and working ASAP. Mike was able to give me an estimate over the phone and worked hard to come over right away and arrived exactly when he said he would. There was a lot more data that needed to be transferred than he expected due to the fact that I had failed to tell him that the computer was used for personal and business purposes. Every step of the way Mike asked us if data was necessary to keep and let us know what he was doing. After his visit, my invoice program was not working properly (due to a quarky software I'm using). He worked with me over the phone to get it working again. Mike is very professional and concerned with customer satisfaction. I will call him again if we need him and recommend him to friends.

My computer was running very slowly and I was worried that it needed to be replaced (three years old). Mike came in the evening and was very professional and went to work while I cooked dinner for my daughter. He took his time and did what he could to speed things up. He fixed our network to make it secure, and made the additional recommendation that i purchase more RAM for my computer, and explained that my Norton software was likely slowing things down quite a bit. After i installed the RAM at Fry's as he suggested, he came back and double-checked that things were running well, and ran more diagnostics. The next day i had some trouble with my e-mail which was apparently unrelated, and Mike helped me deal with that, also, without billing me anything additional. Everything is running great now! I highly recommend Mike for your home computer needs.
Description of Work: Reconfigured home computer network, cleaned up mess on computer to make things run more quickly. Ran diagnostics to make sure there were no problems with the hard drive or memory.

Mike got here a little late but called way ahead of time and explained why. Apparently he moonlights on the side and said his day job had him tied up later than expected on some call he was doing for a business. He didn't seem like your average vision of a computer geek, but boy was I impressed when I watched him work. He was clicking on things faster than I could see what he was doing. A few days ago, I got some pop up saying my computer was infected and asked me if I wanted to scan it. Mike explained where I went wrong by clicking Yes. Darn "Windows Antivirus 2009" got installed and wouldn't go away or "fix" anything until I went to their website to buy it with my credit card. That's when I got suspicious. Called around town and couldn't believe what some people charge to come out and fix a computer these days. I could buy a new one! But I remembered my neighbor seems like he has something wrong with his teenagers computer once a month and always gets Mike over to fix it, so I got the referral from him. Mike confirmed this "antivirus" program was bogus and apparently a lot of people are falling for this scam. He had it cleaned up in about 1 1/2 hours and still had time to set up this external back-up drive I bought a long time ago but couldn't figure out how to use. Boy, did I feel "computer dumb" when he had that set up in 15 min. Then this was the best part: he took the time to explain to me how I can protect myself from this sort of thing with antivirus software and Windows updates, and how to check and make sure my backups are working. He was well worth the price.
