Overall, this project did not go well. Weaver assured us that the job would be completed in 2-3 weeks from commencement. (It wasn't) Thus began the most frustrating and problematic contractor experience I have ever faced. The actual job took 3 months, during which time we could not let our children play out on the deckunsupervised for safety reasons. Eventually, I bought sections of railing from Home Depot and lashed them to the deck posts so that we could have partial use of the deck. GETTING A WRITTEN SCHEDULE COMMITMENT WOULD HAVE BEEN WISE, BUT I DOUBT THAT WEAVER WOULD HAVE AGREED TO THIS. The work quality was shoddy. Weaver's employees were lacking in skills and equipment. They did not possess a masonry drill or bits for attachment to the brick walls, and had to borrow mine. Weaver called me one day and asked me to go to Lowes to buy lag bolts, as he had sent his guys over without any. They did not even possess tape measures--they would scavenge scrap lumber and mark it to length for rail sections. The rail sections were often tool long or too short, and hd to be remade. If the sections were too long, the guys would beat them into place, damaging the expensive composite posts, which I later had to replace. The job was performed piecemeal, with no activity for 1-2 weeks at a time. During this time, Weaver required that I pay additional fees in the form of 'Change Orders' to replace miscut sections. He also charged me $200 extra for the gates to latch--the original order was for locking gates. At one point, Weaver asked me to build a template out of wood for one rail section, as his guys could not get the angle and length correct. Even then, the installed piece was an inch too short, and I had to pack it out with caulk. At one point, when the job was about 75% complete, Weaver called one morning to say that the final fence sections were to be delivered that day, and he required final payment before he would install them. By then, we were exasperated with this project, but felt we had no options--he already had our $3000 down payment and a couple hundred $ in change order payments. I left a check for $800 under the front mat when I went to work. When I came home, sections of the railing were still missing, but the check was gone. It was taken to our bank and cashed that day. When I called himon it, he said that the sections were in fact delivered, but they didn't fit, so he took them away. He still felt that he was entitled to be paid in full. It was about 3 weeks later before the job was finally finished. NEVER MAKE FINAL PAYMENT BEFORE THE WORK IS SATISFACTORILY COMPLETED. However, I am sure that if I had not paid this guy, the railing would have not have ever been finished, and we would have been stuck trying to find another contractor to match the railing design. The work quality is very poor--some of the worst welding work I have seen. People who know what good welding seams should look like comment on the bubbly, lumpy wads of welding material. And the railing is rusting. I have had to touch-up paint it twice already, and it is less than a year old. The best thing I can say about this job is that it's behind us, and that maybe we can save others from the aggravation of dealing with Evans Weaver and his company.
Description of Work: In May, 2012, we contracted with Evans Weaver, owner of Weaver Creative and Mediterrania Iron on Bee Caves Rd, Austin, for wrought iron deck railing for our new outdoor. We selected this company because of his close proximity to our home, and because of the beautiful ornamental iron work at his shop and office area. The job was to build and install 12 wrought iron railing sections, 3' in height, between vertical posts and down two short stairways, on a raised composite deck attached to the back of our house. The total linear length is about 60'. Each rail section required to be cut to length, as spans between posts varied due to the deck design. Some creativity was required, as the deck has two pergola sections and a step down to a lower deck section. Evans Weaver came to our house and surveyed the project, and told us it would be no problem for his craftsmen to fabricate and install these sections. He explained that the sections would be built in his factory, and when delivered, would fit within +/- 1/8 inch of tolerance. Weaver provided very few references, out of respect for his customers' privacy. In retrospect, I should have demanded references or hired someone else. He also required 80% down payment, which was another red flag. Weaver's justification for the hefty upfront payment was that the job was all custom cuts and design. He also guaranteed excellent quality and workmanship, and a long history of experience, and that the large upfront payment was his normal business practice. DO NOT PAY MORE HAN 25-30% DOWN PAYMENT FOR ANY SUCH JOB.

All of the details are described at a website. The sad part is that I continue to get email from customers that did not receive what they paid for and contractors that did not get paid for their work. Today, I filed a complaint with the Attorney General and have suggested that his other victims do the same.
Description of Work: Evans Weaver was to install a pot rack that we purchased from him in our kitchen and was to create a custom iron front door and install it. The pot rack was hung off center and was painted the wrong color. Regarding the front door, we entered into a fully refundable contract. By the date of delivery, he had not even created the plan yet so we chose to cancel the contract and get our $2500 deposit back. When we called to cancel, he was rude, shouted, and hung up. He would not take our calls and refused to refund our deposit. We filed a claim with the BBB and small claims court. He filed bankruptcy so we did not get our money back, but he continues to operate his business, continues not to deliver, and continues not to pay his contractors. He is so bad that the news did an investigation that aired on TV.
