I filled out an online request form to schedule an appointment...went unanswered. I called today (a week later) to schedule a consult. Receptionist decided an entire front yard redesign (rip out everything and start over) was too small for Kevin Wood Landscapes. She told me to go to a garden center and pick out some plants. I'm happy I didn't waste more than 5 minutes talking with someone so rude. I'm not a tire kicker - I sign on the dotted line. I would not recommend this company to anyone.

June 13, 2011 Appointment with Sheryl McLaughlin of Kevin Wood Landscaping at new home to review and discuss plans for landscaping. Sheryl was very nice and easy to talk to. We walked the property and discussed the front yard drainage problems and possible plans for the backyard. Our future plans were to remove the existing attached garage and rebuild a stand alone garage along the fence line. Sheryl suggested how the attached garage area could be reclaimed and used for a patio area. We also discussed how a deck could be built from the back entrance and how the slopping ground could be landscaped to accommodate the deck and access to the rest of the yard. We discussed her fee and the dollar range for a full set of plans. I agreed to a full set of plans. At that time she asked for a $400 deposit. I recall her saying that she had a few client ahead of me and was lead to believe that it would be a couple of weeks before I would see a draft. I gave her a copy of the plat of the property showing the property lines and the house. Also informed her that I was having several trees on the property removed and that I would let her know so she could arrange for the landscape architect to visit the site. He did visit the site to photograph the property in preparation to draw the plans. I informed Sheryl that we had a move in date of July 15th. During our time at the property Sheryl was interrupted with several phone calls. I can see how she might have missed my telling her of our move in date. June 15th emailed Sheryl about the tree removal schedule and ask about the architect visit. The Michael Nate, architect responded and he visited on June 21st. On June 27th I emailed Sheryl as to the status of the 1st draft of our plans and to let her know that the foundation work for the house started and would be finished by July 1st. No response. June 30th emailed Sheryl about the progress of the drawings. Sheryl responded that she had been out of town on family business and was headed to the office to check the status of our drawings. Exchanged a few more emails and was informed that there were several more client ahead of my job. I was disappointed since that is not the expectations she set for me on our first meeting. We were informed that we could seek help elsewhere if we felt that they could not meet our schedule expectations. And that we would only owe them for the work done so far and a accurate base plan. I kept asking what a base plan was but never got an answer. As of July 17th still no plans or even when we could expect to see a 1st draft . One month later and more projects for this house we decided to postpone our landscaping plans with Kevin Wood Landscaping. We emailed Sheryl to inform her of the postponement and if there were any funds remaining from the deposit and to send the basic plans they had completed. $400 deposit was used for her consult and for the architect's time. Those were some very expense pictures. I wonder if we could get those pictures since we paid for them. As for the basic plan, it was an enlarged copy of the plat we had given her with round squiggle marks to indicate the trees on the property! Nothing else. We were very disappointed that it took a month to just draw a few squiggles on an enlarge plat we gave them. Landscaping is a big expense but we choose to call Kevin Woods Landscaping because of Sheryl's radio persona. We enjoy her radio show and appreciate the knowledge she shares with her listeners. Bottom Line: Totally disappointed with lack of professionalism. Expected more from a company who has a representative with such a public presents.
Description of Work: Requested a consultation for landscaping design of front and back yard of a home in an established older neighborhood. To have received plans for landscape and hardscape design with a list of suggest plants to use.

I had Sheryl out to do a consultation. She walked around the yard and took some notes concerning what I had in mind. She said she would have the plan completed in just a few weeks, but she did not finish it when she said she would. About a month after our initial consultation, she passed our job to an employee whom we had never met or consulted with. This person drew up a plan that only partially reflected what I had discussed with Sheryl. This employee came to our home and discussed the plan with us. We indicated that the plan did not reflect what I had explained during the consultation, and the employee said he would redraw it and bring it back another time. Sheryl called and asked for clarification, and I believe that she took over redrawing the plan herself (she said she did, anyway). Rather than being apologetic, she seemed very defensive, impatient, and somewhat rude when I talked to her. She delivered this second plan and we paid for it, at that point frustrated with the entire experience. When I reviewed the plan and the estimates later, I realized that Sheryl still had not fixed the major defect in the plan, nor had she bid the primary feature which we had discussed with her. On further study of her plan and consultation with other landscape designers, I realized that many of the plants she (or her employee) had chosen for key areas in the design were entirely inappropriate to the spaces and conditions where she had planned to place them. We are thankful now that we did not hire her company to implement the plan. We are left, though, with a relatively useless design that we paid several hundred dollars for. It is entirely possible that Sheryl would have worked with us further to correct the deficiencies in her design, but we did not choose to request additional revisions since she seemed wholly uninterested in really satisfying our needs or our desires in our prior experiences with her. I will not hire this company for any landscaping work in the future, and I would not recommend their design services to anyone.

To resolve the problem, we asked for a refund of the $250 for the second consultation. Our request was refused by Ms. McLaughlin as we never even gave (her) a chance to rebid the drawing to see what $5k would do. If Ms. McLaughlin listened to our initial request she would not have to suggest an option of rebidding the job as a solution. Our time is valuable, too, and like the consultation fee has been totally wasted on a plan beyond the scope of our budget or requirements.
Description of Work: On 08-20-08 my husband and I met with Sheryl McLaughlin at our home to discuss our landscaping. The fee for this initial meeting was $100. We stated that our goal is to replace a large portion of our backyard grass with drought tolerant native landscaping that requires minimal watering and maintenance. We specifically said more than once that our budget was $5,000. On 9/15, at Ms. McLaughlin s request I emailed her our property survey and verified in writing that your estimate of the total landscaping project would be $5,000 (to be done in Spring 2009. ) On 10-18-08, we met again at our home to discuss the landscaping plan she prepared using the survey we provided. Her fee for the plan and this meeting was $250. We were stunned by 3 issues: 1. The landscape proposal drawing consisted of our residence outline, along with our current landscaping and numerous unnamed circles scattered about the page that supposedly represented where unidentified plants would go. We was taken aback by the lack of detail and inadequate information on this document. 2. Ms. McLaughlin pointed out that the plan included, a small formal focal point and stone path along with groupings of plants in a formal arrangement. We had requested informal native landscaping that requires minimal care. 3. The fee for this plan was $15,000, which is three times the budget we stated we could afford. Ms. McLaughlin mentioned that we could do our landscaping plan in stages. We did not want a 3-phase $5,000 each phase project totaling $15,000. We want a 1-time completed landscaping service of drought tolerant native landscaping that requires minimal watering and maintenance not to exceed $5,000. Unfortunately, we cannot use this service due to the cost. We are disappointed that we paid a total of $350 for consultations that did not meet our very clear and specific needs.

Response from KEVIN WOOD LANDSCAPES
WE HAVE TRIED VERY HARD TO SATISFY THIS MEMBER, AND NOTHING HAS BEEN SUFFICIENT. I HAVE SPENT SEVERAL HOURS WITH HER AND HER HUSBAND, DISCUSSING IDEAS, PLANTS AND DESIGN. I DID EXACTLY WHAT WAS ASKED OF ME, WHICH WAS A CONCEPT LEVEL DESIGN AND BID, THE LEAST EXPENSIVE OF OUR DESIGN OPTIONS. THE MEMBERS WERE FULLY INFORMED OF OUR FEES IN ADVANCE, AND THAT A CONCEPT LEVEL DESIGN DID NOT INCLUDE PLANT SPECIFICATIONS. IT DID INCLUDE A SCALE DRAWING WITH ALL FEATURES INCLUDED THAT THEY HAD ASKED FOR, AND A DETAILED, LINE ITEM COST ESTIMATE OF WHAT IT WOULD BE TO INSTALL EVERYTHING THEY WANTED. I CAREFULLY EXPLAINED THAT ALL THEY HAD TO DO WAS PRIORITIZE THEIR DESIRES, AND WE WOULD SEE WHAT COULD BE DONE FOR THE $5,000 THEY WISHED TO SPEND THIS SPRING. I WAS NEVER TOLD THAT THEIR TOTAL INVESTMENT WOULD BE LIMITED TO $5K, ONLY THAT THAT WAS THEIR BUDGET FOR SPRING. WE TALKED AT LENGTH ABOUT THEIR DESIRE NOT TO OVER IMPROVE FOR THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AND THAT ONLY THEY COULD DECIDE IF THEY WERE COMMITTED TO STAYING IN THIS HOUSE FOR THE LONG RUN, AND FULLY IMPLEMENTING ALL THEIR WISHES. WHEN I MET THEM TO PRESENT THE CONCEPT, I SPENT TWO HOURS ANALYZING IT WITH THEM, GOING OVER ALTERNATIVES, TALKING ABOUT SPECIFIC PLANT CHOICES, AND SUGGESTING WAYS TO REDUCE THE COST. THEY WERE TO EMAIL ME AFTER PERUSING THE PLAN, AND TELL ME THEIR PRIORITIES FOR REBIDDING PURPOSES. THE NEXT COMMUNICATION WAS A DEMAND FOR A REFUND. I HAVE BEEN ACCUSED OF NOT LISTENING, CREATING FORMAL PLANTINGS, ATTACKING HER AND HER NEIGHBORHOOD AND HER BUDGET. THESE ARE ALL PATENTLY FALSE. I HAVE ALL THE NOTES I TOOK ON OUR FIRST MEETING DOCUMENTING THEIR WISHES. ANYONE WHO KNOWS ME AND OUR COMPANY KNOWS THAT WE WOULD ONLY DESIGN FORMAL PLANTING AT THE EXPRESS WISH OF THE CLIENT, AS OUR NICHE HAS ALWAYS BEEN NATURAL STYLE PLANTINGS USING NATIVE AND WELL ADAPTED PLANTS. I NEVER BELITTLED HER BUDGET WHATSOEVER, BUT I DID TELL HER THAT I HAD NEVER IMAGINED THAT ALL THEIR WISHES COULD BE ACCOMMODATED FOR $5K, BUT COULD NOT KNOW AN OVERALL COST WITHOUT A DETAILED COST ESTIMATE. I TOLD HER I COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD HOW SURPRISING THE COST OF PROFESSIONAL LANDSCAPING CAN BE, BUT REASSURED HER THAT MUCH COULD BE DONE FOR $5K. I THEN OFFERED HER TO DO A PLANT DETAIL PLAN AT NO CHARGE, EVEN THOUGH SHE HAD SPECIFICALLY CHOSEN A CONCEPT ONLY PLAN, AND THAT SHE COULD THEN TAKE THAT DESIGN AND HAVE A CONTRACTOR OF HER CHOOSING INSTALL IT. SHE FLATLY REFUSED THIS OFFER AND CONTINUED TO DEMAND A REFUND, BASED ON THE FALSE ACCUSATIONS LISTED ABOVE. I HAVE CHOSEN NOT TO REFUND THE MONEY BECAUSE OF ALL THE TIME SPENT BY ME AND MY EMPLOYEES ON AN EARNEST ATTEMPT TO MAKE HER HAPPY. IT IS A MATTER OF PRINCIPLE TO ME, AS I NOW BELIEVE HER INTENT ALL ALONG WAS TO OBTAIN FREE SERVICES. SHE IS IN POSSESSION OF ALL MY PLANTING IDEAS, DESIGN CONCEPT, AND COULD EASILY IMPLEMENT THIS PLAN WITH ANOTHER INSTALLER. NEVERTHELESS, WE CONTINUE TO EXTEND OUR OFFER OF A FREE DETAIL PLANTING PLAN WHICH SHE COULD USE HOWEVER SHE WISHES. IT IS ALWAYS OUR ULTIMATE GOAL TO TRY TO MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY, AND I ESPECIALLY OFFER MANY WAYS FOR PEOPLE TO BENEFIT FROM MY PLANT AND DESIGN KNOWLEDGE AT REDUCED COSTS. IT IS WHY I DO THE RADIO SHOW ON KLBJ (22 YEARS NOW), GIVE OUT MY HOME PHONE NUMBER FOR PEOPLE TO CALL FOR FREE ADVICE, AND OFFER MY SERVICES FOR HOURLY CONSULTING TO HELP HOMEOWNERS WITH IDEAS THEY CAN DO THEMSELVES. I LOVE DOING THIS, AND I AM REALLY PASSIONATE ABOUT PLANTS, ESPECIALLY NATIVE PLANTS THAT HELP CREATE HABITATS FOR LOCAL WILDLIFE. I WOULD NEVER, EVER IMPUGN SOMEONE'S NEIGHBORHOOD OR FINANCIAL LIMITATIONS AS THIS PERSON IMPLIES. IT IS VERY UPSETTING THAT SOMEONE WITH SUCH A VENGEFUL ATTITUDE CAN WRITE ANYTHING THEY WISH IN A BLATANT ATTEMPT TO DAMAGE OUR SMALL BUSINESS. IT TAKES ALL KINDS, AND I AM SO THANKFUL THAT THIS IS AN EXTREMELY RARE OCCURRENCE IN OUR BUSINESS EXPERIENCE. IT JUST REALLY HURTS, ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU KNOW IN YOUR HEART THAT YOU DID NOTHING BUT WHAT WAS ASKED OF YOU, AND EVEN DISCOUNTED THE SERVICE IN CONSIDERATION OF THEIR CIRCUMSTANCES. ANYONE CAN CALL OR EMAIL US AT ANY TIME AND GET THE COST OF OUR SERVICES. THEY ARE POSTED ON THE WALL BY THE PHONE, AND CONCEPT LEVEL DRAWINGS START AT $350. FULL DETAIL DESIGNS START AT $650, WHICH IS WHY THIS PERSON CHOSE THE CONCEPT LEVEL DESIGN. WE ARE VERY EXPERIENCED AND DO HIGH QUALITY WORK THAT ENDURES, AND WE WANT EVERYONE TO HAVE THE LANDSCAPE OF THEIR DREAMS.

These folks are very busy. Greg mentioned that they have about a six month backlog of work at any given time, and it took them well over a month to get the design back to me. When I first met Greg, we talked about budget. I said I could afford $5,000 to $10,000 now, and maybe another $10,000 in a few years time. Greg said, "Well I'll make the design based on $20,000." I said, "That's fine, but we'll have to split it into two phases." Their estimate to install the plan they designed for me was $37,000. I worked with Shelby to bring this down into my budget. She made an estimate for the front yard that was $12,000 and an estimate for the back yard that was $10,000, but these prices basically covered only beds, borders, and plant materials. Then I got a call from Greg, and he told me, "This is as low as we can go and still put the Kevin Wood stamp on the project." I realized I was out of my league and decided to seek landscaping help elsewhere.
Description of Work: Greg and Shelby did a concept drawing for a landscape design. They charged a $75 retaining fee for the initial consultation, and another $175 when we met to look at the design and go over the estimate for installation. For this price I received a professionally done, large format drawing. All of the design elements were laid out - beds, boulders, modifications to the patio, etc. - but no plant selections were made at this price point.

THE MEMBER WAS A PLEASURE TO WORK WITH ON HIS PROJECT. DURING THE INITIAL MEETING I WAS GIVEN A PRIORITY LIST FROM HIM ON WHAT THEY WANTED IMPLEMENTED WITHIN THE DESIGN. WITH ANY GIVEN BUDGET IT IS DIFFICULT TO ESTIMATE THE COST ON A PROJECT UNTIL YOU HAVE DESIGNED SOMETHING, FIGURED OUT MATERIALS AND LABOR COST. AT THAT POINT IF YOU HAVE GONE OVER BUDGET YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT THE PRIORITIES GIVEN AND LOOK AT THE INTEGRITY OF THE DESIGN TO FIGURE OUT WHAT IS MOST IMPORTANT, SCALING BACK THE DESIGN OR RECONFIGURING PRIORITIES TO MEET THE BUDGET. MY RESPONSE IS AS THE MEMBER SAYS PREVIOUSLY, WE NEED TO CHANGE THE DESIGN AND OR PRIORITY LIST TO MEET THE BUDGET IF WE ARE STILL GOING TO ACHIEVE THE NATIVE NATURAL LOOK OUR COMPANY IS KNOWN FOR.

It was refreshing to talk to someone with such an obvious passion for her industry and a concern for making sure a homeowner - not even a customer - found plants to complement their yard. They could have easily told me they didn't sell plants and have sent me on my way!
Description of Work: I stopped in one morning on a whim thinking I could purchase plants there to replace some another landscaper put in and Cheryl ended up spending close to a half hour giving me suggestions and recommending where I could find the plants at local nurseries.

It was wonderful to have the entire project handled so professionally and beautifully. The work was completed rapidly and in the same price range as our other estimates. The creative solutions to the problems of our particular landscaping tasks of a 30 year old home, have resulted in a beautiful back yard. We appreciate so much the coordination of the many parts of the job.
Description of Work: We needed to replace old fencing around the back of our property which backs to a nature preserve. In order to replace part of the fencing, a retaining wall needed to be built to raise one side of the property. Drainage needed to be considered for both rain and the pool outlet and existing trees needed to be protected.
