Absolutely fantastic job -- I've gotten completely unprompted compliments from a number of visitors, especially tradesmen/craft people/realtors, who usually say something like "I see a lot of concrete floors, and this is beautiful. Who did it?" I purchased a single-storey house in Nov 2012 that had stained and scored concrete floors through the entryway, living room, dining room, kitchen, family room and hallway. The concept was great, but they'd stained right over the contractor-grade flooring so there was a lot of pitting, discoloration from glue lines, and some very worn spots around the entryway and side doors. The scoring wasn't entirely even, either. Jon at Concrete by Design suggested grinding down the floor (to get rid of the old scoring), putting a thin overlay on top, then acrylic stain, solvent sealer and scoring. The bid came in significantly below the others, and Jon was really enthusiastic about the project. He was great at coming up with color combinations for the staining; the final choice was a diluted cola (orange-brown) and a slightly diluted walnut (deep brown) border. The scoring is an elongated diamond pattern, and it looks amazing. The work was done in December 2012 when the house was empty, which simplified things. Since I didn't move in until the following month, the timing wasn't an issue. I do recall that the solvent flooring had a very strong odor for the first week or so when I was working on other things at the house, but that was almost entirely gone when I moved in. The flooring has held up very well over the last two years. There have been some slight chipping along a few score lines, but only noticeable if you're looking for them. I'm really, really pleased with how the floors came out. Jon had a great mix of aesthetic and technical expertise, and was really a joy to work with.

Concrete By Design recently installed a concrete overlay on the floor in our entry and 4 connecting rooms. We chose the ?natural? color vs. adding a stain and had it sealed with a two-part sealer. This home was built in 1959 with a 1979 garage conversion; the floors in these adjoining rooms were very irregular to say the least?uneven, various surfaces, etc. Now they are smooth, consistent, and beautiful. Jon Shannon met with me twice to discuss the options, explain the process, and help me be clear on the choices. He is extremely prompt and responsive by email which made communicating easy, effective and efficient. He clearly and concisely answered my many questions, was considerate, and professional. The Concrete by Design team as a whole is also professional, considerate, hard-working, and prompt. After initially completing the overlay, they assessed it and determined it didn?t quite meet their standards so immediately began the process to reseal the floor which gave it the quality outcome they wanted to deliver. We confidently recommend Concrete by Design.

Jon was helpful with the decesion of how to re do my floors. We decided on a border and a stenciled medalion design. He was always on time and the work was completed in the time frame I was told. His workers knew their job as well. Jon came back often to inspect the drying. They were very conscientious with the work. I am very pleased with the results.

We are very happy with the service Jon provided. He came out to our home, brought samples, measured, and provided us with a competitive bid. He came a second time before we hired him so we could look at the colors once more since we were indecisive. Three months after the job was performed there were some minor issues. Jon and his team came back out and reapplied the stain and sealer at no cost. With the second application they even moved a stone table weighing approximately 300 lbs for us. The table was not there with the first application and we did not have the manpower to move it. Jon and his team have gone above and beyond and I highly recommend them for concrete staining services.

I couldn't be more impressed with Jon and his team. They were always here when they said they would be, and left everything in order at the end of each day. Even though the job took a little longer than expected, they never took a shortcut on the quality of their work. I LOVE my new floors!

We hired CBD and Jon to demo the existing wood/tile and carpet floors in the downstairs of our home and install stained concrete. Jon was amazing and very easy to talk to and work with. We absolutely love our floors! It was definitely a major construction project and much easier to do and handle if you are not currently living in the home. Jon had a lot of stain and eco-friendly options, which we loved. I would highly recommend him!

Jon was able to respond quickly to my email request for my back patio and sidewalk project. I was provided with quite an array of color stain samples. With Jon's expertise, I was able to choose a stain color that worked very well with the stone colors of our house. Jon and his employees worked very hard to achieve exactly what I envisioned. In fact, I am having them come back out next month to do my front porch, front sidewalk and driveway!
Description of Work: Thoroughly power washed back patio and sidewalk. Did patch up work on concrete where needed. Applied stain to achieve desired results. Applied 2 coats of sealant.

These guys are the real deal. They showed up when they said they would-always a big plus to start things off. They taped everything off, and I mean everything - walls, floor trim, counters, doors...everything and then some! Then they worked, and I mean work hard all day. In fact, they worked hard for two days and got the job done. When they finished, our floor was beautiful! They did above and beyond, I can not say enough about them...highly recommend them!
Description of Work: These guys came in and stripped a botched up job that was done by a guy named Bill Spiller who is doing floor finish work in the Hill Country area under the business name of Tentmaking Floor Finishes - BEWARE! After fixing the botched work, they put a new finish on our floor that was amazing!

That said here is the UGLY: This a major construction project so don't kid yourself. If you have kids and pets, just cozy up to the idea that you will have to add a 5 night stay at a hotel to your budget because to do this job right you will have to turn your house completely over to the contractor. Our case was a little extreme in that we had old tile to be removed from the kitchen and let me tell you that it was no easy task, that process produces dust rivaled only by the eruption of Mt. St. Helen's. Also, get used to the idea all your appliances and furniture will be outside or in the garage during this process. Keep in mind though, this is not a slam of CBD, that's just the nature of the beast. Lastly, if you have those cheap particle board style base boards..... kiss them goodbye. In retrospect I wish we had waited to do this in the fall to be able to open up the house and air the dust and also make it more pleasant for the crew but I have to say I would hire Jon Shannon and his team in a heartbeat again, we love the final result. THE BAD; they did punch a couple small holes in my drywall but hey, those things happen on big jobs like this but they eagerly and cheerfully patched them up........ no harm no foul.
Description of Work: OK, heres the GOOD the BAD and the UGLY; Overall I'm extremely pleased with Jon and his crew! Very professional and punctual. They were there every day at 8:30 AM sharp. Also, it was a pleasure to know there is actually a contractor out there who shows up with a crew with young guys that look like the "boy next door" instead of a bunch of cut-throats from El Salvador who listen to Tejano all day. Very nice and polite guys!

The kitchen stained concrete was a mess with years of dirt and grease I could not get off. It was a house we bought recently and the entire kitchen was being renovated. Concrete By Design came in and did a great job of stripping off everything and starting over with a new stain and sealer. The remainder of the house also has stained concrete and they will come back later and do the entire house, cleaning and waxing it. We have to finish some other renovation projects first.
Description of Work: Rework stained concrete in kitchen. The old stain was stripped, the concrete was cleaned and new stain and sealer applied. They will come back later after kitchen cabinets are installed and clean & wax the stained concrete in the entire house.

In general I am quite happy with the results. The floor looks outstanding, especially in comparison with the stained, dingy carpet that preceded it, and it should be the last floor that room ever needs. As a bonus no trees were harmed or future landfills filled (as with new carpet). This is the first stained concrete floor we've had and I like it better than tile or carpet. Our experience with CBD was very positive. Our main contact was Jon, who answered questions patiently and knowledgeably, and was flexible and helpful in matters such as scheduling and picking up the baseboards for us at no charge (we don't have a truck) and helping us move an inconvenient piano. On the negative or at least unexpected side: The surface of the floor is a little wavy - though perfectly flat to the feet and (at first) the eye, it undulates enough to leave a noticeable gap underneath the baseboards in some places. Also, the stain color is not smooth; up close it has an uneven pattern of dark spots. Not really unattractive, but not what I had expected. Also, despite the fact that the crew covered walls and windows with plastic sheeting, stain or sealant was splattered on one corner of a patio door. Overall, the floor looks great - smooth, bright, and shiny. Afterwards when I was touching up a wall, I let a large blob of white paint fall on the floor, and it wiped up without a trace.
Description of Work: We had a den on the first floor of a slab foundation home, previously carpeted, which we wanted replaced with stained concrete. This also meant that we had to do something with 3 steps down into the den which were also carpeted. CBD removed the carpet and pad, scraped off scraps of glue and pad which were stuck to the cement, put a new, clean 1/8 inch layer of cement on top of the old (optional), and then stained, polished and sealed the surface. They also removed the old baseboards, and installed new baseboards which I had painted. Finally, they cut, stained, sealed and installed new oak risers and treads on the 3 steps which had been previously carpeted.

We wanted a dark brown, not reddish/orangeish color, and Jon did a great job getting the color just right for us. I originally contacted Jon over e-mail and we arrange everything via e-mail over a few days. I provided him with my dimensions and he gave me a quote that sounded fair and was better than the other quotes I received. I agreed and he came out the next day. He made the whole thing very fast and easy. We love the results!
Description of Work: We had our back patio concrete stained and sealed. Jon did a very through job of cleaning the concrete first so the stain would take best. Then the actual spraying of the stain went pretty quickly. It looked good right away, but needed to sit over night. Jon came back the next morning and touched up any areas that needed it, then put on the sealer coat. It was dry and safe to walk on by evening. The whole process was quick and simple and we're quite pleased with the results.

The team is professional, friendly and experienced. The scoring and colors were done extremely well, and they matched the existing floors to a "t." There were some problems with the sealer finish; it was not smooth. But they worked to resolve the problem until the job met our satisfaction. I would recommend them, but ask up front about which sealer will most likely dry to a smooth finish. They used a sealer to match the finish of our existing stained floors, but I wouldn't recommend that anyone else use that particular sealer. (Sorry, I don't know what the name of the sealer is.)

We enjoyed working with them and were very happy with the outcome. They worked with our design, transferred it expertly to the floor, and applied 3 colors of stain to the design. They also sealed it, and came out a second time to address issues caused by the concrete company's recommended 'salt finish' (They had told us from the start that any salt remaining buried in the concrete would cause irregularities in the staining. They removed the salt to the extent that they could, and even came out a second time to apply some touch up stain and a second coat of sealer.
Description of Work: Preparation of existing concrete surface (pressure washing, digging out rock salt left by the concrete company where possible - see below). Worked with my wife to ensure that her design was feasible given the space. They traced her design on the concrete in pencil. Then she made some adjustments to what they had drawn. They then expertly cut the design shallowly into the concrete. They worked with us to select colors, and stained the design. They sealed the floor. Then they came out again to address issues the salt had created, and applied another coat of sealer.

My experience with this company was excellent. They were very thorough in making sure that the concrete was absolutely clean before they began staining. After the initial staining, they went back to touch up the corners with a painters brush to touch up any areas they felt needed it. Finally, they sealed the floor twice in order for it to meet their satisfaction.

It went very well. We have a 300 sq ft front porch. When we bought the home 6 yrs ago, we had the porch painted. Then 3 yrs later we had it repainted. Looking for a more long term solution, we contacted these folks for an estimate. The price seemed reasonable so we contracted them to do the job. They showed up and began the stripping process. That took a couple of days, then they started the scoring process and that took a couple of days. Then when the weather and wind allowed they stained and varnished it. The entire process took about 10 days. The results are spectacular.
