Colin Lyons

It was terrible. Colin is the husband of a coworker. He came in a gave a very good bid. I thought he did this because I work with his wife. He brought in a buddy to paint (not a painter) who did a very poor job. I used to paint professionally and know bad prep and paint work. He painted over a varnished piece without primer. The HVAC man found termite damage in the attic. Colin quoted me $4300 to pull all the insulation out, repair the damage, treat for termites, then blow in new insulation. The insulation is only about an inch or so thick, bare in some areas, and up against items that require a certain amount of distance of clearance around them. He used over the counter termite treatment and told me he "would slap the yellow stickers everywhere" up in the attic. I did not know over the counter treatment doesn't count, and doesn't work that well. I will now need to have more insulation blown in since he removed all my old and did not do the job correctly. Everyday he arrived late and left early, and everyday he would tell me that the next day he would be there by 9am and work hard to get the job done. I gave him a key since I know his wife. When I had to go out for a period of time, if I returned early he would be gone. He would return about 15 to 30 minutes prior to the time I had told him I would be returning. This happened 3 times in 2 weeks. He was supposed to have everything ready for my appliances to be delivered on 1/7. The walls only had one coat of paint, the cabinets were half painted, some areas with 1 coat, some areas 2 coats. He said he would stay until midnight on the delivery day if he had to to be there so nothing happened to the "new floor". I told him that delivery would be between 1:45 and 3:45. At 12:30 he leaves without telling me, leaving the "painter" there. He did not return until after the delivery guys brought in the refrigerator and marred the floor, and he had to be called to return. He stopped working on the kitchen to do the attic. By then I was close to the breaking point, and when I learned from someone that floating laminate is not supposed to be glued, I put the brakes on the project. He even tried covering poor workmanship on the floor by covering it with blue tape. The floor has required replacing.
