Let me start by saying that I KNOW tile and tile-setting as this is how I put myself through college. First, he changed almost every design detail that I had created and purchased specialty tiles for - not to make it more structurally sound, but because he didn't like my design. (He "doesn't do" quarter round.) Second, he demanded HALF down, in spite of 1/3 being the industry standard, and the fact that we were providing all the tile. Third, he didn't verify my measurements to ensure he had enough tile until he was almost out of tile, which meant ordering more tile and a 3 day delay in the install. Fourth, he was -chronically- late... until the last day of work, which I had made an appointment and he called me that he was actually on-time and was nasty and demanding with me on the phone. He was late for every day for 2 weeks, and then gets nasty when, being accustomed to his late start-time, I made an early appointment. Fifth, the overall quality of his work was -disappointing- at best. Crooked grout lines and failure to grout all the lines. I had to go back after him and re-grout the areas he missed. The vertical set tiles were not tamped to level with each other. And finally, we found him very temperamental and difficult to work with... which would have been easy to over-look, had the quality of his work been that of an artist. He was $200 more than the closest bid, but we hired him anyway because he gave the impression that he was an artist. He was, at best, an experienced hack.
