Initially Jack Sparacio and I agreed on a price: $1000 for one apartment and $2,000 for the second apartment. I thought it was high, but Jack came recommended, so I trusted him. We also agreed on how he would be paid, 1/3 at the beginning, 1/3 at the half way point, and 1/3 upon completion. He told me it would take a week. On November 9, 2013, I paid Jack $1000, so that he could get started. Four days later, on November 13, which should have been half way through the one-week job, Jack asked for another $1000. On November 20, Jack said he was desperate and needed $600. He drove to my work and waited for me. He kept calling me and I texted him I was in a meeting with my boss. As soon as I got out of the meeting, I met him and wrote him a check. I told him I had to move moiney from savings into my checking account and asked that he wait until the next day to cash it. I questioned Jack why it was taking so long, now 11/20/2013 (Now 11 days since the beginning of the "one-week" job). Jack said that he mis-judged the scope of the work, and poor weather conditions had slowed his progress. Jack called me the next day and told me my check bounced. My bad, I trusted him to wait until the next day to cash it. I immediately went to my bank and had a Cashier's Check made out to him and delivered it personally. On 11/29/2013, I went to see if the apartments had been finished and they were not. A number of the things I pointed out to Jack on the initial walk through had not been done. A sliding screen door had not been replaced, cabinets had not been painted, patched walls had not been textured, but just painted over, and an interior door had been rehung, but wouldn't close. Jack said, "Michael must have missed it." Jack hung the door and had to know it wouldn't close. Jack also found electrical outlets he said didn't work "sparks shooting out", so he replaced light switches and wall receptacles at an additional fee. So I paid him extra, $965 extra. That is $3965 from the original $3000 quote for an unfinished job after three weeks instead of the one that was promised. Jack kept saying "I am a man of my word" and "have a blessed day." Another contractor finished the job for me. I admit, I walked into this thinking I could trust this guy, and was beginning to get desperate myself because it looked like I was going to eat another month of no rent. This man of his word was anything but.
