With thousands of satisfied customers, Austin Drainage and Landscape Development is one of the oldest Austin area companies specializing in commercial and residential drainage systems and corrections and performing retaining wall and concrete construction. Austin Drainage and Landscape Development has expanded services which includes residential and commercial landscaping, hardscaping and irrigation. We are dedicated to professionalism, reliability and are ready to serve you.
Description of Work: I asked them to give me an estimate for landscaping and irrigation issues in 9/2015. The guy who came out was excellent and responsive to my questions at the time, but it took him 4 weeks to come back with an estimate and when I had further questions it took him another 4-6 weeks to respond. When I could not reach him, I contacted the office and then he would call and tell me that the end of the year is a busy time of year and with all the rain we had, their was a high call volume/ service request. He asked me to give him until the end of the year. After mid January, I emailed him again and he did not respond. I called the office and asked to speak to his supervisor and was advised to send her an email directly. She also did not respond. Although I was very happy with their plan and ok with the estimate, I have given up on ever using them because their customer service is very lacking. After four months of minimal communication on their part and patience on my part, I have no reason to believe they will ever give me the courtesy of responding to my complaint.

Response from Austin Drainage + Landscape Development
We are truly sorry for the communication delays, and the inconvenience you experienced. We strive to provide excellent customer service, and your description of events does not meet the customer service goals we set for ourselves. While we in no way want to minimize your experience, we would like to explain that your appointment occurred during the largest business surge in our over 30 year history. In the year of 2015 Austin experienced 2 major flood events; May 23rd/24th, and October 30th. The May/Memorial Day floods caused at least 1000 people in the central Texas area to flee their homes while sections of I35 were submerged under water. Additionally, Lake Travis rose 2 ft in less than 12 hours and several parts of downtown Austin were flooded leaving thousands of people without power. Less than 6 months later another devastating flood occurred at the end of October in what may have been the most intense rainstorm ever recorded in Austin, as Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared a local state of disaster. These events created an unprecedented demand for our Drainage Services. Austin Drainage + Landscape Development cares deeply about the Austin community and recognized these were unusual and very scary moments for thousands of residents. As a result, we focused our resources to assist customers with drainage issues, especially those who experienced water penetration into their homes. It appears that as a result of the strain these events put on our staff, we did not communicate with you as well as we would have liked, and we offer our sincerest apologies.

Description of Work: We and Our neighbor Joined forces to install French drains on both sides of the house after we flooded Memorial Day weekend 2015. ADLD also graded the back yards so water could more easily drain to the front street and ditch/ creek. The French drain on one side was 6-8 inches under ground. The landscapers covered most of it in Colorado Rock and the parts that originally had grass back in grass. |The other side they just dug a gradually sloping ditch and covered It in rock. It all looks beautiful. And we saw the drains work with the heavy October 2015 rains. Very well done. They are not cheap, but they are quality. We initially had a miscommunication with them. Per their instructions my husband called in a credit card number to pay a deposit and put us in their ( long) queue for the work. The person on the phone didn't actually run the card which we didn't realize til looking at the statement end of the month. So we were very frustrated to have lost 3 weeks not actually In their queue. Once we realized we called them , complained, and they worked with us. ( thank you!). They actually came out sooner ( by 1 week) to do the work. Quality of work was excellent; the team was fast too. It was sometimes hard to contact the office/ project manager side. We had similar experiences with every service provider these past 7 months. I think the floods and Austin growth makes these companies very busy.
Was recommended by handyman service. easily accessed by website. once arranged inperson evaluation, they were quite good at keeping updated as to when might get job done and prompt reply to calls/emails. Did the job well and if any delays were minimal and within reason (ie weather). If thre was an issue was promptly addressed right then or the next day; such as damage to a sprinkler. Even though the first job had to 'wait in line'.. was well worth the wait for the quality of the work. Do plan ahead of when would like work done and suggest to have done off season fall/winter is always easier to schedule and any landscaping will not be stressed by heat.
Description of Work: Actually was two jobs.. first job done earlier was correcting the existing drainage what two previous landscapers called french drains to drain the sides and back.. So good, I then had them to return and add drainage for area side/front of house. Then installed the dry creek for runoff with all the rock/gravel looks fantastic. laid down new and special sod for the grass that got killed off by standing water and shade. they also did some repair work to sprinklers. Great job of cleaning up.Really set apart from others was being available to do a walk-through before as well as after completion of the job. would definitely use again.
Scott and his guys always do a great job. They did a nice job integrating the downspout drain into some existing stonework, and the rebuilt stone wall looks terrific. They added some unobtrusive "weep holes" to allow small amounts of water to drain through the wall.
Description of Work: This was the third time I hired Scott Lockhart. This time, his crew applied some waterproofing material to my house, installed a drain pipe to carry downspout water away from the foundation, and rebuilt and mortared a stone wall that was falling apart.

It took a few weeks to get the job scheduled. Once the schedule was set, they were prompt and performed the work on the scheduled dates. Installing the additional drainage system required removing making trenches through solid rock. This additional work extended the total job length by two days. There was an additional charge for the rock removal work. This charge was clearly explained in the original estimate and by Scott when we discussed the plan. They had to put in a pipe under the driveway to take the drain water away. They did a nice cosmetic treatment with limestone to make that cut across the driveway look good. During the final walk through after the job was over, I asked Scott to fill in a small area of additional paving. He did this at no additional charge. We were completely satisfied with the work and the appearance.
Description of Work: Cleaned out an existing French Drain system and then added additional drain pipes to eliminate problems with the original system's performance. The new extension required adding additional drainage around part of the foundation and a new drain pipe that crossed under the driveway.

They didn't actually do a good job the first time so they came back out and corrected the problem.
Description of Work: We used Austin Drainage & Landscape Development about two weeks ago to clean some drains and gutter.
Scott Lockhart and his employees did an amazing job for us. We needed a retaining wall rebuilt and a drainage solution all around our house, which backs up to a creek. Other bidders balked at the steep creek edge and other complications, basically turning the job down. Scott set to work solving the problems, and came up with solutions that were smart, beautiful, and robust. Everything they did turned out better than promised, exceeding our expectations with no detail overlooked. The wall was well-engineered and will never have to be replaced. The men working on the job were friendly, considerate, punctual, and unbelievably hard-working. Most of them have worked for the company for seven years or more. They spent the first two days of the project reclaiming rock from the remains of our crumbling, failed dry-stack wall, throwing rocks uphill to the yard in 102 degree heat. Because of this, we did not have to purchase new rock to build the new wall. Austin Drainage was able to complete every part of the job ? tree removal, replacement of our chain-link fence, building the retaining wall, installing a French drain as well as direct pipes for gutter runoff, reconfiguring the sprinkler system, and landscaping the finished product. It was a relief not to have to find multiple contractors and coordinate all of this work. In the final project stage, the guys built us steps leading down to the creek. This gave us access where it had been very difficult before. My kids, 3 and 7, love to play down there now, and are busy building a fort. Austin Drainage not only gave us a whole new yard, but also gave the kids a new favorite adventure!
Description of Work: Replaced retaining wall between yard and creek, replaced 2 walls around flower beds in yard, installed drainage pipes from gutters as well as french drain, engineered a drainage solution to make water flow appropriately around the house and into drains, landscaped back yard and front beds, reconfigured sprinklers to accommodate changes, reinstalled chain-link fence.

Overall it went great and I would recommend this company to everybody. Whenever they came across a problem these men were able to fix it appropriately. I did not feel taken advantage of. Thanks Scott and all those who work for you! Cindy
Description of Work: My first floor was completely flooded last September 2010. I needed work on a french drain. I got 3 bids and I felt that Scott Lockhart the owner of Austin Drainage and Foundation was the most professional of all three bidders. He included in his bid, his professional information and past experience and education and referrals. I did not receive this from any of the other people. I was on a waiting list which was understandable. His secretary was very professional and kept me informed by e-mail and by phone as to when work would start and to corresponding about the contract. He gave me an estimate in which I gave a down payment for. Even though he went way over his estimate...I was not surprised...he tried to make up for it to be fair. He was to build a french drain with 2 four inch PVC drain pipes completely around 3 sides of my house. He included another drain from the roof gutter to drain out along with the french drain. He had to do a lot of rock work and Jack Hammer work and in some places had to dig 4 to 5 feet. His men were very hard working...arriving around 8:00 a.m. every morning and working all day. There was a lot of hand labor and taking rock away by the bucketfull uphill. It was all done by hand digging and shoveling by these hard working men. I felt as though I could trust all these men wholeheartedly. They all cleaned up their rock piles and mess completely. They even made the landscape look better than when they first arrived. It was so very labor intensive with no machinery other than the jack hammer. It was all a JOB WELL DONE! And I want to thank them all for their great work.

Scott came out and looked at the moist spots in my subterranean garage. He explained where they came from (from water backing up behind the main "beam" of my house), and that unless the water was running or pooling then I had a nuisance rather than a problem that needed excavation. I found out a couple of weeks later that I had a small plumbing leak adjacent to the garage which is where the water was coming from.
Description of Work: Diagnosed moist spots in subterranean garage. Indicated no excavation was required. Recommended a good power wash of the garage floor.

In 2010, after researching companies on Angie's List that seemed to be the most qualified on surface water drainage issues, I tried twice (8/7/10 and 8/26/10) to contact Scott at Austin Drainage and Foundation via email directly from Angie's List. I never got a response to either email. My conclusion at the time was that the company doesn't regularly check its email, or that my email somehow got filtered out by Scott's (or the company's) email program. Regardless, the outcome was the same: I never got any response to two email requests (my preferred method of communication) from Austin Drainage and Landscape Development. I did not pursue them further, nor did I try any other contractors. I put the project on hold. 2012 update: I called Austin Drainage and Landscape and they sent the owner, Scott, out within a few days to look at the project. It was obvious from my discussion with him that he was a pro. I was delighted with his ideas for handling the surface water and water from my roof which concentrated in a very small area on our hilly lot when it rained heavily or for a long period. His estimate was a little higher than I expected but still acceptable. From a scheduling standpoint, they estimated an August start (3 months later). Well, August came and went as did September. They started in October. Scott came by only once to introduce his crew chief and briefly describe the project to him. I was a little concerned because Scott seemed not to remember many of the details. However, his crew chief and workers were terrific. They did what I feel was an excellent job of designing and executing the plan. I work from a home office and I was thrilled at their collective punctuality, work ethic, and quality of work. They took about 4 days from start to finish, but were extremely professional and courteous throughout their long days, and they cleaned up the work area very nicely each evening. When they finished, I anxiously awaited a big downpour to see how their work held up. It was actually a couple of months before we had a serious rain. The drain they installed under my new driveway segment and the hidden collection boxes they built and connected to my downspouts worked flawlessly. The new concrete they poured was expertly contoured because of the time they took in site preparation. These guys were great. Use them with confidence for your tricky drainage work, but you may have to wait a while to get on their schedule.
Description of Work: Resolving surface water drainage issue and replacing cracked part of driveway which had been undercut by water over the years.

I've used many contractors over the years, and without a doubt, this is the finest company I have dealt with. The job was a big one; we had jackhammers pounding away for five days with over four yards of rock being removed. Scott's office communicated well (thanks Ashley) with me so I knew what was going on. (even letting us know he was stuck in traffic and running a few minutes behind) His crew and their foreman (Carlos) was excellent. The mess they created was cleaned up perfectly. Yes, I'm picky and they did a fabulous job. Scott even came over on two different occasions after the job was completed and had his crew make additional cosmetic adjustments to our property. This is a person who genuinely cares about what he's doing. He was also willing to help us with scheduling and was flexible and sensitive to our needs. If only every contractor was this reasonable. I did not get other prices or other bids for the job. Once I met Scott I knew I had the right person. For those of you reading this who have foundation or drainage issues, I highly recommend Scott and his fine company.
Description of Work: Our home is located in Westlake and is constructed using pier and beam. The Texas basement we have is located well below the surface floor and was built on solid rock. The problem we had was small amounts of water occasionally entering the sub-surface room. We spent a considerable amount of time and money doing what we thought had fixed the problem, but Tropical Storm Hermine (approx 10 inches of rain in 24 hours) overwhelmed our drainage system and we again had water in the room. I contacted Scott Lockhart, the owner and he came by to take a look. The job required him to excavate behind the room and install a french drain. Sounds simple enough until you consider the digging was through solid rock.
I chose the company because of information on Angie's List. First, Scott was going to be 20 minutes late to our appointment, and he called to let us know - that alone is amazing. He spent more than an hour explaining exactly what needs to be done and why. I was impressed. I would not hesitate to recommend the company!
Description of Work: Although the work has not been done yet, we were so impressed with Scott that we had to let people know. We will be having the work done in stages (it's a big and expensive job), but we didn't want to wait to let people know how pleased we are with Scott's service and expertise. He said he would sent us a list of sub-contractors and the email with the list was here before I got back home.
Scott is a pleasure to deal with, and the quality of work is top notch. He personally supervised the work of his crew, visiting the project site several times each day. The final cost was substantially higher than the original estimate due to much higher than anticipated amounts of rock that had to be jack hammered out to install the drain. Scott's original estimate had indicated the possibility of additional rock removal, so it was not a complete surprise to us, and Scott talked to us about it as soon as the problem arose. It took longer to get our project started, and longer to complete than we had hoped, due primarily to the amount of rain during that period. The quality of the work, and the thoroughness of the cleanup each day more than made up for the delays.
Description of Work: Installed French drain around back patio of house, including destruction of some existing concrete walkways and flowerbeds, which were replaced with flagstone and gravel/river rock.
Scott's estimate of cost was spot on. He surveyed the property and made several recommendations regarding the best way to proceed. From start to finish, my experience with this Company was very positive. While the installation of a French drain from the rear of the property to the front of the property is quite invasive, Scott and team did an excellent job of ensuring that the landscaping was preserved. While this Company may be slightly more expensive, the experience and warranty are well worth the extra cost.
Description of Work: Scott and team installed a French drain from the rear of my home to the front of the property. In addition, they installed an above ground irrigation system.

Very well. Owner Scott Lockhart met with me to assess the problem and make recommendations, which he explained clearly. They sent me a bid within a day. After some back-and-forth communications about the scope of work, I paid a 10% deposit and they scheduled me for work the next day. They had a large crew working all day. The drain seems to work well and all the work looks professionally done. They did charge a small amount ($250) over the bid price for some unexpected concrete work they encountered, which seemed reasonable. However, they also fixed a few items that were not in the scope of work, like a downspout connection and a broken tile.
Description of Work: ADF installed an area drain to drain a patio area that tended to flood, connecting it to an existing downspout drainage line. They also performed some related repairs, including curb cuts at the street and patio, repairing a downspout drain, sealing the joint between the patio and the house foundation, and fixing some tile grouting.

Great communication from the office administrator, Ashley, regarding the estimate, timeline for the project, and additional work needed as issues arose. The workers showed up on-time and worked hard all day & the project was completed on-time.
Description of Work: Here is the list directly from the estimate: 1. Remove soil from the retaining wall system beneath the crawl space. 2. Waterproof and flash the retaining wall. 3. Install a French drain below 10inches of the finished floor elevation of the below grade heated space. 4. Replace skirting at front, waterproof and flash and install a French drain at the base of the skirting. 5. Re-grade the front and right front side of the lot to divert overland drainage from structure. 6. Daylight all below grade drainage systems to the left rear property line. 7. Saw cut concrete patio at left side and repair as needed. 8. Remove trash, debris and rubble from crawl space. 9. Install 9ml vapor barrier in crawl space. 10. Clean site and haul debris.

They were amazing. A crew of about 8 to 10 men arrived, and they worked two days straight (including Sunday) to completion. Even though there was a large crew, they all worked together so well to keep the project moving along. The crew lead kept me informed of their progress and readily answered questions. They were also very neat and put things back in order. We could hardly tell that there was a trench cut across our yard, when they replaced the grass. Some of the flower beds and plants had to be removed to dig the trenches. We knew that upfront and it is specified in the contract, so was not a problem. But, I want to be clear about that, since others may have nice landscape that could be removed. They did try to restore the plants and pathways, as much as possible. But, aren't expected to replace full landscaping.
Description of Work: They installed a French drain from the back of our house, under the driveway, through the front lawn and out to the street. This entailed digging a trench all along the house, excavating a trench in the driveway, and installing a downspout collection system. They also installed a rock retaining wall around the trenches and filled the area between the wall and foundation with gravel.

OVERALL, THE WORK WAS EFFICIENT AND TIMELY AND CLEARLY HAS TAKEN CARE OF THE SERIOUS DRAINAGE PROBLEM THAT EXISTED. HOWEVER, THERE WERE SEVERAL DAMAGED AREAS IN MY IRRIGATION SYSTEM FROM THE DRAINAGE WORKERS THAT REQUIRED ANOTHER $500 TO BE REPAIRED (BY ANOTHER CONTRACTOR). IN ADDITION, I REQUESTED DETAILED DRAWINGS AND DOCUMENTED A FINAL SCOPE OF WORK (WHICH I HAVE NOT RECEIVED AFTER NUMEROUS REQUESTS).
Description of Work: THEY EXCAVATED TRENCHES AT REAR OF MAIN HOUSE AND ALONG RIGHT REAR SIDE, RIGHT SIDE AND LEFT SIDE OF HOUSE. THEY INSTALLED TWO 4-INCH FRENCH DRAINS AT EXTERIOR WALLS AT REAR TO PROTECT FINISHED FLOOR ELEVATIONS. THEY INSTALLED ON 4-IN DOWNSPOUT COLLECTION LINE INTO SYSTEM AS NEEDED. THREE 20'X20' CONCRETE AREA DRAINS WITH STEEL GRATES WERE INSTALLED AS NEEDED TO COLLECT SHEET FLOW. THEY DISCHARGED DRAIN SYSTEMS TO STREET AT CURB. THEY ALSO SAW CUT THE STREET CURB AND REPAIRED AND CLEANED THE SITE AND HAULED DEBRIS.
