The problem was the price - it was outrageous! The problem with my A/C was a small device called a capacitor failed - it is an electrical device that aids in starting the compressor and fan. It took less than 5 minutes to diagnose the problem and less than 10 minutes to replace it. The price seemed so high that after the repair person left, I was curious and checked with the manufacturer of my A/C and got the part number of this capacitor, and found the exact replacement on the Internet for $24.95. When I found that out I was so mad I actually ordered the part to make sure it was the exact part number - it was. So for a $24.95 part and less than 10 minutes of labor to replace I was charged $250! That was in addition to the $80 service charge just to show up. While I expect ARS to earn a profit, $360 for a $24.95 part and 15 minutes of labor is ridiculous!!! Do's and Don'ts - Don't call ARS unless you have a large bank account !
Description of Work: My A/C unit stopped working and ARS was called to repair the unit. They replaced a defective part. On the plus side, they did arrive when they said they would, and the repair person was friendly and knowledgeable.

First, all appointments were kept, and all went according to schedule. No surprises. They were expensive, but there was a complete lack of stress in dealing with ARS. My house is old and the hallway was tight inside, and the outside A/C had to be installed on a new slab away from a tree. (I've received no state or city rebates at present, but those take time to receive, so no worries there yet.) The boss inside A/C and furnace installer seemed to me to be quite experienced. Pleasant, business-like installation people who worked with me to meet the state deadline for a rebate for installation. Best of all, the company was not sickenly legalistic; did not give me tons of fine print legalese to sign, as some other bids I had gotten required of me if I had gone with them. I went with ARS because they were easiest to work with. They weren't the cheapest company, but I found them completely reliable, and I am perfectly happy with the work that they did for me.
Description of Work: New air conditioner and furnace installed in old (1968) house. Old furnace and a/c removed. Work was done to get electrical and venting in small hallway furnace closet up to present Austin city code. New thermostat installed.

They had a really good guy working for him. I think I've also had not so good people working for me, so it kind of depends on who you get. One guy named "Bunny" floats around between companies and we love him. It's almost as if he's so good and so smart that he intimidates people. He's the best appliance repair guy in Austin.

Overall, the appointment process was fine, but execution of the service was handled very poorly. However, the silver lining is that it made it painfully obvious not to do business with them in the future. I had a quote for replacement hvac systems which I will now discard.
Description of Work: ARS called me for a hvac tune-up, offering a discounted price. I informed the rep that I had 2 hvac units. She confirmed that I would recieve the discounted pricing on tune-ups for both units. I scheduled the appointments and Emilio, the tech, arrived in the window promised. When he arrived, I confirmed he was working on 2 units. He then said he only had one unit scheduled. I asked him to follow up with his office and was sure they would have the correct information. I then asked him to make sure that I would recieve the discounted price on both units as promised. I guess that was too much information for the tech to process. In a condescending tone, he told me to relax. Maybe I misunderstood who was getting the benefit of my business in MY house. In any event, I don't tolerate poor service and sent him packing. I then called the office at 866-627-8195 to provide feedback. I was disconnected 3 times. On the fourth attempt, I finally got hold of dispatch at 512-345-4050 and gave them my complaint.

The technician came out, said he didn't know if they worked on Dacor, told me I needed a new control panel and door hinge and that he would call me the next day with the parts and labor cost. I paid for the service call and never heard from him again. I have left 3 messages with ARS and they have not returned my calls.

They did a fine job and they gave me a 15% discount as well. Before my air conditioner completely went off, they came out several times to check it out and get it started and keep it going. I always call them because they can come out on weekends and they don’t charge me for overtime like other companies. I had water problems when they had to dig up the front of my yard and re-plumb it and did a good job. They worked with me and I asked them if I could pay them in 2 separate payments and they helped me out. They have always been professional every time they come. They are punctual and I think that their price is fair.

Douglas is competent, fastidious, fast, and friendly -- a winnning combination. He's my favorite plumber and always does a great job. I consider him to be honest and trustworthy as well. Also, he always addresses some of my smaller plumbing concerns while there for bigger projects. He's knowledgeable and doesn't mind imparting that knowledge. His diagnostic skills and repair work are excellent. I don't know if all the technicians at this company are of this caliber, but Douglas gets my highest rating. The price listed here is a home warranty price. For non-warranty projects it's about twice that.

The representative said if he had to dig a short trench it would cost $300 and if it was a long trench it would be $500 but he dug a short trench and charged us $500.I was in the hospital at that time. That was thoroughly slimy. The total bill was $500 plus tax which came up to $750. I threatened them to file a suit at the small client’s court if they didn’t give me my money back. It was about 3rd or 4th phone call to them. I was talking to a lady in the billing department and she told me I would get my money back. She then talked to her manager and called back. The repair worked but it was nothing superior. They took advantage of my wife’s desperate situation. He was responsive as he came right over. They had done some work for us previously and it was okay. They discussed the price in the beginning. They did the work and they stuck to the price. It may be this individual who came out the last time promised us one thing and did another.

It was a really good customer service experience even though originally they had misdiagnosed when they came out. They refunded for the parts that we had paid for before, and all we ended up doing was paying for them to come out and patch up that leak. They were out quickly and they stayed late too. They were punctual but they did call us and let us know if they were late.
Description of Work: We used ARS of Austin to fix a poor job that another provider had done on our air conditioning unit. Originally, the person that came out told us that we needed to fix something in the attic that had to do with our A/C. We paid for the labor and the parts, and it was a huge amount. We ended up having to call them again, and when they came out they realized that they had made a mistake and had misdiagnosed what the problem was. They ended up patching up a leak that had been there. We had them come out more than once, and they replaced a motor or something. The second time they came out they said that we needed to fix something else because there was a short. When they replaced that we had an issue again and this time they sent us a senior person. He came out, just looked at it and identified the leak. He pulled out the machine and said that their company didn’t replace that particular part. He said that that was done by whoever we had gotten to fix it before, and that the material they had used was wrong. He had that patched up.

It didn't. We went with Davis Service instead.
Description of Work: We needed a new HVAC to replace our 13 year old existing unit. Our current A/C was running but on its last legs so we had some time and decided to make a thorough bid process out of this project. We contacted 6 contractors; ARS being the last one. We chose them based upon a special promotion that they were holding - $500 refund for our existing unit. At the time we contacted ARS we had already received 5 other quotes ranging from a low of $5,800 to a high of $7,200; most were clustered right around $6,000. All quotes were for the exact same set up and amount of work. The person from ARS was very proud of his company and explained right from the get go that ARS would not be the lowest cost. He tried to justify any price delta based off of how good his folks were compared to every one else. Fair enough; I guess. Long story short is that ARS came in at $11,800 (refund included). I told the guy that he was 2 times higher than every one else (remember the "deal" was for a $500 refund for our old unit so his start price was actually $12,300). he replied how that was "impossible", he "knew what he was doing", the other guys were "armatures working out of their garage" and so on. He went on to say that I would not be happy with the results if I went with a lower cost installer and that I would be calling ARS to fix the other guys problems and it would cost me more in the long run. In fact, he spent more time picking on his competitors than he did on anything else. This is poor salesmanship - period. Needless to say, we did not select ARS to do the work. We went with Davis Service Company (my review of them is pending as I write this) and we could not be happier. Nothing that ARS told us has come true and their price delta was insulting. To end on a positive note, the guy from ARS did have one heck of a nice watch!

They came out, tried to unstop the line with their auger and had no success after two hours. They implied that our plumbing was faulty and attempted to convince us to use an auger with a video camera attached for something like $300 additional if it worked, no charge if it did not. We told them no thanks, what do we owe you? They charged us $140, no results. We contacted our regular person who came out and in less than an hour had the drain unstopped. I could not recommend using ARS since they failed to perform and tried to upsell us.

We had a bad experience with them. A guy from another company found that the on and off switch was malfunctioning in the air conditioner, so he changed the switch and charged us only $60.
Description of Work: ARS of Austin checked the furnace for us in the fall. Our air conditioner had a problem staying on, so we called them. The guy that came out took nearly 2 hours to inspect the outside unit and the electrical panel in the back of the house. He wanted to beak in to a wall to reach a vent and replace some concrete platform. He estimated that the cost would be $7000.

The A/C was working poorly and an initial service call didn't quite fix the problem, so I put in a second call and the second individual came within a day, resolved the issue, and didn't even charge me -- so that was "A" level work. However, both individuals had recommended preventive replacement of a part in the outside unit, so I set up an appointment for that replacement for the following week. Two days before the appointment, the A/C went out completely (we've been having a heat wave). I called the company in the early PM, they said they would have someone out to look at it by day's end, but nobody appeared. Called again in the AM, and they told me that nobody was available to come look at the A/C that day, despite the fact that temperatures were again climbing into the 100s. We had to spend the night at a friend's house because our house was too uncomfortable. The following day was our appointment, and that was handled very well: the workman identified the part that had failed and gave a good explanation for the cause, and replaced both that part and the originally scheduled part. Conclusion: when they show up they are generally very competent, or at least are very good about ensuring that if the first time there's still an issue, someone will come back and take care of it. But their ability to address schedule flexibility in an emergency is not impressive.

Excellent. See story above. This was a completely hassle-free experience. Both the woman who answered the telephone and the electrician who came out were extremely professional and did a great job. Within 2 hours, my problem was solved and I could enjoy the rest of my day.
Description of Work: We had a light that had burned out in our master bathroom, and unfortunately this happened on a Saturday. It left a burn mark. I called the ARS number and spoke with a very pleasant woman who informed me that she would have someone out, but that it may be several hours. Within 30 minutes, a nice gentlemen called me. We discussed the problem and he informed me that I may need a new light fixture, so he gave me time to go purchase one. When he came, he determined it could be resolved without a new light fixture, which means that I can take the new one back to Lowe's and get my money back. ARS charged a $79.95 fee for coming out. However, the gentlemen told me that there was no additional charge for the service and that the $79.95 covered the fee to fix the wiring problem in my light fixture.

I was reasonably content with what they did. When I moved to the area, I had American Home Shield and they were the designated service rep for that. I was not disappointed with them.

I called after 10pm on a Thursday night, they said they could have someone come out and check my home AC the next morning after 8am, and that they would call before coming out. Friday just before 8 they called, he showed up shortly after. I was quoted $79 for a diagnostic and estimate. He actually did a little work (cleaned my coils) and that fixed my problem immediately. Arrived promptly. I had spread a tarp out for him to put the newly dug dirt on... which he ignored... However, I had not mentioned that was the intention or the purpose of the tarp. So the lesson: spell everything out. Unlike others who had previously done this job, he took no care to "salvage" the sod in order that I might put it back over the dirt. He just tossed it into the growing pile of dirt, all mixed up. Sure enough, later when filled the hole in, the grass was all buried and I was left with a three foot circle of raw dirt. I had to go buy sod to renew the situation. Nothing major, but all that could have been avoided had he set the top sod aside to begin with (the prior pumpers did this automatically).
Description of Work: Had septic tank uncovered and pumped ($310). Had a "riser" installed and cemented into place, to bring me up to the new code (a devise that lifts the lid so you don't have to dig so deep the next time) ($190).

They were beyond wonderful. I have a two-story house and the upstairs doesn't cool properly. I like to use it for entertainment and it gets too hot. I brought in 3 or 4 people to get an estimate for getting a cooler. Everyone basically quoted me a brand new system running $5000-$7000! The first thing he said when he walked in was, "whoa I think there is a better solution." The better solution was about $750! He didn't just want my money, he actually wanted to correct and resolve the problem. He actually looked at the problem and came up with a scientific solution. He increased the supply and return of the air flow using the existing air conditioning system. That solved the original problem for a way better price than what anyone else wanted to do.

I called ARS late Wednesday afternoon. I wanted to get an estimate on attic insulation and see if our AC intake was large enough. Lady who answered phone had to check to see if they provided insulation services. She came back to phone and said they did and that someone could come "after 6pm" that evening! Great, I thought. I told her I would have my cell phone with me as she stated the estimator would give me a call 20-30 minutes before arrival. Never got a call. No one showed up. Next day a guy from ARS leaves a message on my home phone, apparently believing we had an appointment that day. I called him back to tell him we were scheduled for yesterday and he apologizes for the "mix-up" and then we made an appointment for him to come the next day, Friday, after 1pm. Again, I have my cell with me the whole day and I am home almost entire day. No one calls, no one shows up.
Description of Work: A receptionist from ARS spoke with me on the phone as did one other employee. No services were performed as they failed to keep two appointments.
