I would like to say that we are an average family with only a 1200sq. ft. home. I used to equate using a decorator only with the rich and famous. That is not my family and coming to terms with hiring an interior decorator was difficult but it turned into one of the best decisions ever. We hired Anne Penn to help us create a color scheme for the interior of our home and to consult on flooring. We were about to replace the entire floor in our home which was going to cost over $10,000. We only had the money to do it once so it had to be right. My favorite part about working with Anne was that I communicated in feelings and images to her and she translated them into hard details and choices for us to make. I told her that I wanted the inside of our home to feel like a warm embrace and at night I wanted the light to look like candlelight. As to the floor, I wanted the floor to be like a river that connected all the rooms and that I wanted an organic feel to the whole house. We also had large dogs and so the floor had to be impervious to the toenails of 100lb+ dogs. We ended up with a glossy, brown tile floor (large tiles) in an offset pattern that flows through rooms with colors like moss green and buttercup. Gorgeous! AND, my favorite part, at night the light in our home looks like 19th century candlelight or lamplight. One of our favorite things to do is to walk into our back yard with a glass of wine in hand and look back at our home. It is so inviting and warm to see. It brings us such contentment and happiness and it?s ours. We love it. One note about whimsy: In the middle of the first interview with Anne I looked up behind her and saw the white Christmas lights hanging on the mantle from the PREVIOUS Christmas! We had left them up because we loved the indirect light they provided. I was mortified and wanted to sink into the floor. It turned out to be a really good thing that we left them up, however, because Anne understood completely what it was we liked about the light and we ended up incorporating them as a solution for indirect light above a series of bookshelves (although, the lights themselves are now hidden from view :) Working with Anne was a delight. I can?t recommend her highly enough. You will not be disappointed nor is there any need to be embarrassed about points of whimsy in your home. Anne will ?get it? and help you incorporate it into the cohesive look you desire.
