Andy has done plumbing and handyman work for me in the past. The quality in the past was adequate, and the price was reasonable. I never thought, what a great job, but in general you get what you pay for. On Andy's return to Austin after an extended absence, I asked him to do half a dozen repairs to a duplex that I own. I did not ask for a price up front since, as I mentioned, his charges had previously been reasonable. I have owned 8 rental units for 20 years, 1 of them I have had for 25 years. I have a pretty good idea of what repairs cost. For the work that Andy did, if I had hired top of the line contractors, it would have cost at most $1000. Andy charged me $1800. And Andy is NOT a top of the line contractor. As an example, in the same unit, I have had a 4x4 foot section of ceiling sheetrock replaced and textured by Renegade drywall, one of the best companies in Austin, for roughly $300. It was beautiful. Andy charged me $225 to patch the sheetrock where he re-ran the drain line. It was a tiny fraction of the work Renegade did, and the patch under the kitchen sink looked like he smeared plaster on it with his hand. As far as I can tell, Andy charged me licensed plumber's rates for mediocre handyman tasks. And FYI Andy is not a licensed plumber. Andy did the work in a reeasonably timely manner, and as usual, the quality was spotty but adequate. If I had been paying handyman rates it would have come in at less than half what he charged me and I would have been a happy camper. Personally, I will never use him again, but I would say that if you got a price up front, and you are satisfied with the estimate, he can do most plumbing and handyman jobs.
Description of Work: Unsuccessfully attempted to unclog the kitchen sink drain. Ran a pvc drain pipe about 3 1/2 feet through the back of a hall closet, tying the kitchen sink to the bathroom sink. Sprayed foam sealant in openings to prevent rodents form accessing duplex. Replaced a bathtub valve stem. Replaced the cover on a light switch. Moved the striker plate on a door jam so the door would latch. Epoxied the control panel on a range because the clip that held it had broken.
