I ended up not getting the service done. Situation changed and I'll be able to do the work myself so this is just for my experience in dealing with Al. Basically, Al was awesome. He responded very quickly and came in way under the other bidders on this job because he gave me an alternate much better solution that what I was thinking. His willingness to think outside the box, and work for your best interest was a breath of fresh air. I didn't get to use him so I can't speak for the quality of work, but if there is a job on this remodel that I can't handle myself, Al will be the first and probably last contractor I call to bid on it.

Contracted Al - The Handyman to remove the carpet from a bedroom (office); the concrete floor was repaired, sanded and cleaned in preparation for the terra cotta stain. A new exterior door way for the office was created. The new door and door jam were painted to match the exterior brick. The mason made sure that the brick around the door matched the brick around the adjacent window. Also had several other rooms (ceilings and walls) painted. We had a move in date and Mr. Hartley made sure that all work was completed on time. He always returned my calls promptly. His workman were always kind in answering any questions I had about what work was being done. They arrived no later than 9am and were there until 6pm. They cleaned up after themselves. The new office looks great.

Overall, the work went well, and he was excellent. He called right before he got here. He was timely; he made the appointment and was here at the time of the appointment. It all seemed to work after he left. He is very tall; I was not sure how he could sit under the sink but he did. I would rate him highly and would use him again in the future if necessary.

They were a little late on the appointment time due to an unavoidable delay but kept me well informed on when they would arrive. Upon arrival they got down to business and did a great job. I will definitely consider doing business with them in the future.

We needed the door from the garage into the house to swing inward instead of outward (into the garage) in order to be able to get past the car when it was parked inside. Al the Handyman gave us a convenient appointment time and arrived promptly to do the work. I expected to have to replace the entire door and frame however, he was able to just reverse the existing door with a minimal of trim work repair. The service man was friendly, courteous an professional. He completed the work quickly and didn't leave a mess for us to clean up. I highly recommend Al the Handyman.

He came down a couple of times. I have to call him again as I have another problem. He does a lot of thing and we like him very much. He is very knowledgeable and he seems to know what to do and fixes it and I like it. He was reasonable and when I call him he is here in a short time. He was here at the time he said he was going to be here. He seems to know what he is doing. I like him very much.

Even though they couldn't reach me to confirm, Jim still showed up at the appointed time. He worked quickly and effectively, and truly flew through the task list. He was easy to have around and when I decided I needed the curtains rehung a little higher, he did it without the dirty look and complaints I might have gotten from my boyfriend :-).
Description of Work: I recently moved into a new apartment and Jim came and did a lot of the odds and ends I needed done, such as making a cat door in my laundry room, upgrading the light fixture in my closet, checking the wiring on my ceiling fan (to see if the light could be hooked up to a separate switch), installing a curtain rod, and even assembling some bar stools.

I needed to have the siding on my house replaced fast. I saw Al's ad on TV, checked him out with Angie's List, and called. He responded quickly, patched the holes where the squirrels were getting in, and set up a time for an estimate. Once we agreed on the price (with some minor negotiating) the work began as soon as weather permitted. The workers were professional, courteous, and efficient. My neighbors thought so too. I was very pleased with the results.

We couldn't open door nor lock them but now we can and that was good. He tuned up two doors that were not fully functional and made them fully functional. It took about forty five minutes and it was a done deal. He actually called up and said if he could come early because he had finished up early which worked for me. Everything was good.

We were very satisfied with his work. We spent around $180 on that service. Even though he could not do the work himself, but he tried all different things. He got someone else to come and they took care of it very quickly. His friendliness and pricing was also excellent. We felt that even though he had to run around town looking for parts that he hoped would work, but they did not work. He did not chare us for that but found someone who could do the work himself, so we felt that the price was extremely good.
Description of Work: We used Al The Handyman at the end of May because we had a problem with the dryer venting to the outside and the location needed to be redone on the inside, so it was a safe vent.

I got a verbal estimate from him and not a written estimate. I did not like him that much. He gave me a very broad estimate instead of giving a firm one and I did not get back to him after that. His estimate was average but I did not know as to what I was going to get. He gave me broad figures but I did not know as to what he would come back with. He definitely talked down on me like I did not know as to what I was talking about. He gave me advice that I did not want. He treated me like he was young which was not impressive. He did not do the work.

Response from Altruistic Home Repair/Remodel
I do not remember this gentleman. We strive to be professional at all times. I do give broad figures at times to give a customer a range. No proposal was sent to this gentleman, so either he did not give me something concrete to go on, went over a number of things to give him an idea etc. I don't know. or he has me mixed up with someone else. I do make suggestions to customers about areas, but also state its just a suggestion, I will do what you want, afterall, the customer is the one who is paying me. Either way, it is regrettable that this misunderstanding happened. I hope he got the things done he needed and wish him the best

Al was extremely responsive to our request for an estimate, coming the very next morning after our call. He checked the porch carefully and made several excellent suggestions about the extent of repairs he felt were necessary. Once the contract was agreed on, Al scheduled work to begin the next day. He assigned two very excellent men to the job. The lead carpenter told us he had 38 years' experience, and it certainly showed in his professionalism and skill. Both men were extremely punctual and worked diligently from the time they got to our home in the morning until the time they left for the day. Both were extremely knowledgeable, friendly and more than willing to answer any questions we had about the course of the work as it went along. The job site was carefully cleaned at the end of each work day.
Description of Work: Extensive repair and refurbishment of a very large, 20-year-old cedar back porch and pergola. Replacement of stairs and railings as well as some stringers and corner posts. Added several new support posts under the deck. Pressure washing and sealing of the porch posts, railings and pergola, plus repainting the porch floor.

Al was originally giving us a bid to put up a privacy screen on the side of our yard. When he gave us the bid, I asked him to put up two curtain rods and a wheel on our gate, due to not having the funds for the privacy screen at the time. I found out that he charges a trip charge and $60 per hour. Our total for the curtain rods and wheel for the fence was not worth $140.00. I felt ripped off, but at least got the work done. If you call him get a bid on the project you want done (ie., the privacy fence) and make sure you have the cash to do it right away!
Description of Work: Al put a wheel on the gate for our fence so it would open smoothly. He also put up two curtain rods. I really think he's a nice guy, but found his prices for these two tasks a bit unreasonable. I will call him again though.

Al came out the day i called and fixed everything in a flash--It was a dirty job--cracked pipe under the deck. He had it fixed in no time without taking the deck apart. Then he fixed a couple of little things while he was there--same by the hour fee. I should just keep a list and have him come every couple of weeks!

Best handyman ever. On time, hard-working, great good humor, extremely knowledgable, all one could ask. Don't try out anyone else, just call Jimmy.
Description of Work: Installed two doors - removed old doors and frames, spent a long time leveling the frame area for new doors to fit, hung them and re-leveled, finally rebuilt entire frame. Installed new door hardware. Did lots of little things like install ceiling fan, re-caulk bathtub tile -- worked his butt off the whole day.

I did not think the doors could be repaired, but Al managed to do it excellently.
Description of Work: We had seven rental units all with sliding patio doors that did not work efficiently. The rollers were broken and missing, and the doors dated to 1981, so I didn't think it was possible to repair them. Al found a source for the matching rollers, and replaced them and the locks on all the patio doors of each unit.

Al came for the estimate when he said he would. The builder's supervisor gave us the name of the special lumber used for the shelves, and Al found it with a local supplier. Within a day, we had an estimate that was less than we had anticipated. Al's carpenter came when he said he would, did the job promptly, cleaned up, and the shelves are wonderful! No one would know they were added after the house was finished.
Description of Work: We bought a new house. The shelves under the kitchen counters were the typical half-shelves, which end up being a huge waste of space. I wanted the half-shelves extended to the front of the counters throughout the kitchen.

I think they can stop it from wobbling. I need to call Al again and schedule it. Al was super. He was very prompt to come out and give me an estimate. He sent two subcontractors out to do the work. Most of the work done was pretty well, but I still need them to come back to fix a couple of things. They did quite a few things in the house, and did a pretty good job.
Description of Work: I used Al The Handyman to fix a wall hanging that literally fell out of my ceiling last week. They replaced my sliding glass door completely and installed another door. They did some tile work in my kitchen and installed a vanity. I also had them install a new commode, and it wobbles.

It went very well. Al had to make several trips because successive coatings needed to dry. He also replace the carpet which we had taken up at the time of the leak.
Description of Work: The February freeze caused a pvc pipe in the exterior wall of our master closet to split. The plumber needed to cut out approximately 9 square feet of wallboard, irregularly, to locate and repair the pipe. Al patched it perfectly--it is impossible to tell that the wallboard is not original.
