I purchased the Angie's List Big deal, for air conditioner tuneup and that consequently turned into a very pricey quote for cleaning of the coils. I feel had I shopped around for the coil cleaning, I could have priced a much more competitive quote. Since he was already there, I went forward with the work. I will say however, the Tom's Mechanical technician was very friendly, informative and did a thorough job.

Overall, I was very satisfied with the technician's explanations, puncutality and the speed with which he repaired the unit. We feel he was looking out ofter our best interests by making additional recommendations to extend the life of the unit.
Description of Work: Its Saturday night during the first week of 100+ tems so naturally the A/C has to go out, right? Called Tom's emergency number at approximtely 10 PM--left a message. They returned my call within the half-hour & set a window of noon-2, the next morning. I was surprised when the next morning, the technician called at approx. 8:30, saying he would be there by 10:00 AM. He arrived, examined the a/c/ for about 10 seconds before accurately diagnoising a bad condensor--he also warned that given the amp output measures, there was a good chance that my a/c was nearing a premature end--I then authorized the addition of a special kit which remedied the problem.

Response from Tom's Mechanical, Inc.
We have apologized to the customer and he kindly allowed us to perform a thorough inspection of his system on August 23rd. Our technician made a minor repair and his system is now cooling appropriately. The dispatcher who failed to properly handle the customer's initial call has been reprimanded. We regret that he was inconvenienced and will use this experience to continue to improve our company.

My A/C went out during our first week of 100 degree days so I called Tom's after getting an e-mail about a special on Angie's List. I called after hours and was called back very quickly and when I spoke with the technician and advised him that my system was less than 2 years old, he suggested I check with the company that installed it to see if I had a service warranty to ensure that I could get any savings that I might be entitled to. He told me that if I needed someone that night and the other company was not available that he would come out. I had the other company come out, since I wasn't sure about the warranty. After the system was up and running, I purchased the Angie's List coupon and called Tom's back to do the A/C Check and Tune-Up, since I wasn't that impressed with the other company and what they had told me on their visit for repair. I received the same wonderful customer service when calling Tom's the second time and when the Tech came out to service my A/C. I would recommend them highly and would definitely use their services for any future concerns or upgrades.

Tom's gave me a bid on Friday, I accepted the bid on Friday late afternoon and they installed my new unit Monday. Jacob and George arrived by 9:30 A and were finished by 2P. They were friendly, polite, informative and very considerate of my property. Upon completion they went over what they had done and provided me will all necessary paperwork that went with the new unit.
Description of Work: After getting 3 bids, I chose Tom's Mechanical to replace one of my central a/c units. Not only were they the lowest bid for similar equipment, they were performing some additional replacements to insure a perfect outcome-something the other 2 companies did not offer to do. Tom's also gave me a 10% Sr discount! Upon completion, they hauled away all debris, including the old unit. They also checked each inside vent to be sure all was working perfectly. This has been a very positive experience and I would definitely use this company again.

Very Impressed is all I can say!! The professionalism from the time I called to set the appointment to the time the service tech (Carl) left was probably one of the best experiences I have ever had with a service company. 1.) I bought their "deal" for $69.00 off of AL 2.) I have done some A/C work in the past, so I had already cleaned the coils myself and replaced the startup capacitor and contacts (stuff that I am comfortable doing myself) 3.) I was looking for Tom's to make sure it was in top condition. 4.) Carl went through the entire system added a pound of freon and confirmed all was working good. 5.) Carls friendly professionalism and explaing everything was great. I have always heard good things about Tom's Mechanical and now have first hand experience and would recomend them to anyone. I am considering buying one of their annual service plans as well.

Called at 8 am and they were able to come out at 11am same day. Jimmy was very professional and courteous. He had us back with cool air within 30 minutes. Only negative is that they only accept paper coupons- nothing electronic so be sure to print your coupon before they arrive. Wanted to update the review. After posting my review, the company called me back and gave credit on our card for the coupon value. Great way to create a repeat customer. Have used again and will again if services are needed.

The technician was friendly, courteous and professional. I had some questions about a/c operation and he was helpful. The work took took about 1 hour. When he was finished and about to leave I asked him what the temperature readings were across the inside coil. He said they "don't open that up unless there is a problem." At that time I figured I was wrong in assuming that he would check that temperature differential. Today, I rechecked Tom's website and it states that the scheduled "inspection" does include checking the temperatures across the coils. I wasn't wrong, after all. These are my issues with the service performed:1. If you advertise that coil temps will be checked, it might be a good idea if you actually do it.2. How can you tell if there is a " problem" if you don't check.3. It might be a good idea if the technician provided a checklist that noted inspections performed and results/observations. For those inspections that yield numbers, the numbers should be documented.4. Was it just chance that the specific inspection I asked about was not done? How many other inspectionsare not done "unless there is a problem?"
Description of Work: My central air unit is 3 years old so I felt it was time for some pm work. I also was interested in knowing about the efficiency of the inside coils since I was trying to determine if the unit was slightly undersized or just not working optimally. I called Toms mechanical because it was rated well on Angies list and their website advertised an "inspection" for $60. This "inspection" on the website listed several things they would check. A few of these things were visual in nature and a few required measuring devices to obtain quantitative readings such as temperature, pressure and amps.

Jimmy scheduled to arrive between 9 and 11 AM. Arrived at 9:30 and did a thorough inspection of the system. Told me I did not need a new air conditioner unit (which another service did THREE years ago, but a couple of new parts. He replaced the start kit on this call and will come back to replace the capacitors when I get back from vacation. He also told me there would not be another service call to come out, as long as I booked within 30 days. Very knowledgable and a straight shooter. Did not try to sell me a $6000 unit as the other service did. Will use them again and recommend this service provider to anyone.
Description of Work: Complete A/C and heat tune up, including new air filter and two pounds of R-22. Also replaced start kit, as compressor pulling 90 amps @ start-up. Unit was not starting every time and now works fine.

Our A/c is 9 years old, and we thought it was time a professional looked at the unit to see if it needed refrigerant or anything else. The man was supposed to be here between 9:30 and 11 a.m. Around 10:30, the office called and said he'd be late because his first appointment was taking longer than expected. I should expect him by 12:30. At 1 p.m., I called the office and asked if he was still planning to come that day. They contacted him and said he was now on his way. He arrived about an hour later. We thought we'd need some refrigerant, but it appears that our unit is still well sealed and no refrigerant has been lost over the years. He told my husband that our dual capacitor was still within specs but just at the bottom of the specs. My husband thought this meant that the dual capacitor was actually a redundant system (built-in backup). While writing up the bill for his visit (about $50, after a $25 discount coupon I found on Angie's List), I inquired further about the dual capacitor. He explained that "dual" does not mean it's a redundant system...the capacitor actually governs 2 different functions. But he assured me that we were still within specs--just barely. I asked him if he could replace the capacitor while he was here, and he said he could. He gave me the price, and I approved it. It took about 15 mins. for him to do the job. Texas summers are brutal, and the thought of losing A/C in July during a heatwave does not appeal to me. Being proactive is the only way to handle things. He replaced the capacitor in short order and everything continues to function properly. While we got off to a rocky start due to him arriving half a day later than expected, I would definitely call Tom's Mechanicals again. They're a professional outfit that doesn't want to sell you products that you don't need.
Description of Work: General inspection of the unit, measured the refrigerant level and replaced the dual capacitor.

Tom's showed up as scheduled. They called 20 minutes before arriving. Inside was inspected and they said all looked good. He went outside and about 20 minutes later he came back and and said it all looked good. I asked how much Freon was added and he replied none. It did not need any as it was within limits. I was surprised and very guarded at this point. This was the first time anyone other than Tempo had looked at my system and told me all was fine. I pulled out my paper work from Tempo and showed the tech what was written on the Tempo service ticket. I asked again, you did not find the Evaproator Coil that was leaking freon? I knew I was putting him on the spot but needed to do so to satisfy my own paranoid mind. He was very nice and replied he did not find anything wrong with the systems. So, I am now elated with the news, p***** at Tempo, and cautiosly optomistic that our sytems still have some usefill life in them and we can stop worrying so much that one is leaking and time to replace. I still ended up paying $138 to service both units, did not get any freon (main reason we did it because we told one was leaking) and walked away really wondering now if Tempo was just trying to sell me a new system, did Tom's miss something, or does the truth lie some where in the middle? Two opposite assessments only creates the need to find the tie break and seek a third opinion. Overall, Tom's did their job as contracted while putting my mind at ease and at the same time, raised questons regarding my past 10 year contractor Tempo.
Description of Work: Annual Inspection and tune up that offered 2lbs of Freon per unit. I have two units and Tempo told me after 10 years of service with them that one of my downstairs units had a evaporator coil that was leaking freon and could not be fixed and needs to be replaced. They also wrote the Sales reps name and phone number on the ticket to contact for more information about my options. That was in the summer of 2011. We elected to ride it out and see what happened the next summer. We were preparing for the worse as our house was still cooling well and we did not see our electric bill going up so we declined. I was also at the end of my Silver Star service with Tempo and was being offered another package that carried a hefty monthly payment. However, I declined after they scared me into thinking one of my systems was going bad. I was not going to keep paying a monthly service fee knowing the unit was going out. So I stated shopping around and watching the prices of the various units out there.

In the autumn of 2011 we set up an annual service agreement ($180/yr for 2 units) with Tom's Mechanical. During the autumn inspection the technician found a capacitor "out of tolerance" and replaced it for $72. We just had the spring inspection done, and again the technician found a capacitor "out of tolerance", or, actually, what he thought was "out of tolerance". Fortunately, my husband was home. Here's what he has to say about the spring service. "Overall, I can't say that I am impressed by the level of service. A major part of my disappointment was caused by the technician trying to talk me into paying a rather significant cost to have a perfectly good capacitor replaced. During his examination of the exterior units, the service technician removed one of the motor capacitors, tested it with his hand-held meter, and declared it to be decaying. My wife and I then got the lecture about how the capacitor was likely in the near future to continue to degrade and eventually fail, most likely outside of normal business hours on the hottest day of the year. If we liked, he would replace the capacitor during this checkup call and save us some money over the large amount we would be charged if they had to come back out of hours later to replace it. The evidence of decay? The capacitor was rated at 50 uF, but his meter said it was only 47.7 uF. No corrosion, no oil leakage, no bulging, no other physical sign of defect that can show up when a capacitor like this goes bad. That seemed pretty strange to me so I asked to take a look at it. Just glancing at the label revealed that this capacitor was manufactured with a 10% tolerance. That means that _fresh from the factory_ an acceptable capacitance value for this unit is anywhere from 45 uF to 55 uF. When I pointed this out, the technician claimed that he had mistaken this for one of the new capacitors, which has a manufacturing tolerance of only 6%. Well, do the math. Even at the tighter tolerance of 6%, a factory-fresh capacitor could be anywhere from 47 uF to 53 uF. Still later the technician said that he was mistaken about the 6% and that the absolutely newest capacitors have a tolerance of just 5%. Umm, do the math again. Even at 5%, the acceptable factory-fresh range is 47.5 uF to 52.5 uF. No matter how one spins it, 47.7 uF is a perfectly acceptable capacitance value to read no matter whether one says the tolerance is 10%, 6%, or even 5%. A few minutes on the web brought me to the datasheet for this particular capacitor. It turns out that its rated lifetime is 60,000 hours with a 94% survival rate when operated at full voltage, 60 Hz, and rated ambient temperature (for full lifetime, should not be more than 158 degrees F). If the unit gets used for half of the year at a 50% duty cycle, that 60,000 hours translates into over _27 years_ of operation. Now, I am certainly not saying that every capacitor of this type lasts that long; components do fail earlier than expected and for lots of reasons. However, whipping out a capacitor meter and claiming that the reading indicates one particular capacitor is about to fail when it's still completely within manufacturing tolerance indicates at the very least more technician training is required. Fortunately, I am an engineer and have seen lots of blown-out, degraded, failed, and just plain broken components over the years. I'm comfortable looking at components, their specifications, and their datasheets. If this hadn't been the case, there would be a new capacitor in that unit and the old one (actually good for who knows how much longer) would be on the way to the dumpster. It makes me wonder how many perfectly good capacitors have been changed out over the years (at about a couple of hundred dollars each for parts and labor)." If my husband hadn't been home, we'd be out about $200 because I didn't know any of the above. We did, however, end up paying $138 to have 2 lbs of freon added to one of the units.

I called Tom's Mechanical mid-morning on a Monday and they said they could have someone out the same day. I decided to schedule for 2 days later, then changed my mind an hour later and called back. They said they could still come out same day but gave me fair warning that since it was so last minute (due to my own fault as noted above) that they couldn't give an exact window. Around 4:30 pm I called them up since I hadn't received an "on the way" call from a Tech yet. Informed me that he was finishing a call within 10 minutes, then had to drive across town and I was next. Tech then arrived about 45 min later as they indicated. He was very clean/professionally dressed and polite. He inspected my system and quickly repaired it, and also serviced both units while there. The price was very reasonable, and then I was also able to apply the Angieslist coupon. Very pleased.
