Chip did our complete home interior remodeling (kitchen, bathrooms, bedrooms, living areas, floors, fireplace...everything!) in the fall of 2012, and we are still very pleased with the results. When we decided to update our patio room, we knew exactly who to contact. Just as before, Chip suggested design ideas we hadn't considered and they were all winners. We had "Super Dave" again as our supervisor, and a new hire, Eddie, did the trim work, and Ian's group did the painting. Once again, the quality is top-notch, the workers were all professional, and we are glad we called on Chip again. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

The reason I called is because I wanted him to build a customer cabinet, but we ended up just moving an old piece to that area that is already built in. He was basically just finishing what the other contractor had already started because these guys are taking so long. So it was already in the process, there’s a pantry, there’s a laundry room, and there’s a large bedroom with a closet. So the large bedroom with the closet doesn’t have much to do but the other two things are in the process. I would give him an A on everything. He was probably a little pricey, maybe I’ll give a B on that. I think I’m going to use him on the kitchen because he looks like he does a quality work.

My guest room has a small bathroom. There is a sunken tub and a toilet ( 4 1/2 feet from tub wall to pocket door and x 6 feet wide (basically length of tub) The tub/toilet area is separated from the single sink vanity area by a pocket door. The vanity area is 5 feet deep (2 feet of that is the cabinet) and 7 1/2 feet long. It is only wide enough to stand in front of the vanity. I wanted the sunken tub removed and replaced with a bathtub set at floor level. I also wanted a new toilet to match. Nothing special, just serviceable. There is a furr-down over the existing tub that would be removed. I have removed 3 of these over the years and there has never been any duct or electrical wiring in there; they were a "fashion statement" in the mid 1970's when my house was originally built. In fact, that part of this bath has no lighting over tub or air vent in that room. I wanted basic flooring-currently it is a carpet over slab. Require tile in tub area, texture the walls which are currently wallpapered and new cabinet for sink-basic builders cabinet. This is a small room and a guest room that is at the opposite side of house. No decorative statement required-only serviceable. This is the only tub in my home of 3 !/2 baths. Basic faucets/shower for tub area. Current sink faucets are fairly new. I stressed that I had to keep costs as low as possible. Let me make it clear, this is a small bathroom that is currently in good working order needing a facelift! Chip seemed very nice. Arrived on time. I received his bid one week later. $19,500!!! I have been getting bids and even his competitors are astonished with such an incredibly outrageous bid. If this was Chip's way of making me reject his services, he simply had to tell me the job was too small. If he thought I was some silly older woman who didn't know any better, he was dead wrong! Seriously, Angie's List, this contractor is as unscrupulous as a contractor who does shoddy work. This is one of the reasons I have Angie's List and am very disappointed.
Description of Work: Chip came to look at a small, guest bathroom and give me an estimate for updating.

Response from Chip's Kitchens and Baths
She wanted the bath totally redone including cabinets, flooring, walls and all new plumbing fixtures. I explained to her that my bid would include EVERYTHING and that we could cut back if needed. I have found that other contractors tend to bid jobs cheaper and then add extras as they go. I think that is dishonest. So, I try and give my customers a realistic view of the total project. I'm sorry she feels that I didn't want the job. Nothing could be farther from the truth. As she stated I was on time, listened to what she wanted and call with a bid in a few days.

Chip and his crews were prompt, courteous and very conscientious. All of the work was high quality and they were very responsive, even when we had miscommunicated our wishes. We also greatly appreciated suggestions made by several people involved, including Chip. The painter did a fantastic job on the kitchen cabinets. We were completely satisfied with the entire process.

Our home was built in 1986, and needed a kitchen and wet bar update. We spoke with local contractors and chose Chip because he invested himself in our project from the first time we met. He gave us an amazing plan and worked with us at length to make sure the flow and function of the kitchen were perfect. Once we decided that the plan was exactly what we wanted he gave us the cost estimate. Admittedly, it was a bit over what we had in mind as a budget for the project. But, because we had not told Chip what we wanted to spend, he planned our update with the age and architecture of the house in mind. We opted to up our budget and go with his plan. Once the contract was signed and a start date was chosen we did not have a single down day. All of the subs were first rate. They were all respectful of Chip and expressed pride in the quality of work he expected. Because the plan was so well done before the job started, there were very few changes required along the way. Because this was not our first experience with a major remodel, we anticipated delays, cost overruns, and other frustrations. We never experienced any of those situations with this project. Omar, the project foreman, was always available to answer our questions and direct the work. The kitchen was gutted, and the slab was trenched to relocate the sink drain, water and electrical to a new island that was built in the center of the space. The quality of the Chip's custom built cherry cabinets is outstanding. The granite and floors are beautifully done in both the kitchen and the bar. They relocated our existing double ovens and dishwasher, installed a large apron-front sink, induction cooktop, and updated kitchen venting. A new drawer microwave was installed under counter. Under and over cabinet LED lights, and pendant lights were installed. The sinks, new faucets, new disposal , and under counter LED lights were included in the contract. We chose to purchase the cook top, vent hood insert, microwave, pendant lights, and over cabinet LED lights outside the contract. They were all installed under the contract. Chip has responded to small details and punch list items even after the contract was closed. The job was completed in approximately 30 days, with punch items being addressed beyond that time. Our new kitchen now allows multiple cooks and guests to move easily around the space. We are extremely pleased with our new kitchen, and with our remodel experience with Chip and his crew. We will definitely contract his services for future plans.

We went to Mr. Hornbeek with a basic kitchen concept. Within about 45 minutes, he created a design of the new kitchen, including a computer drawing of the entire kitchen layout. Several days later after the old kitchen was removed, Chip came and measured the space in the house. He then refined the above drawing to the exact measurements. The projected five-week construction time for the cabinets took six weeks. The installation team was very organized, and professional. The installation took about one-half day. There were a few paint chips and minor installation issues, but these were corrected quickly. We are very pleased with the quality of the cabinets, and the staff of Chip?s Kitchen and Bath

Had my kitchen remodeled last summer. When we decided to to build a bookshelf, the cabinet people that did my kitchen they wouldn't paint it in shop, would have had to have had it painted in house. We did not want to put up with the smell and mess. Chip designed ours with the same style and matched the color perfectly. Only thing I can say is to not be in a hurry. Chip has a lot of business!! But great guy to work with.

Chip was one of five contractors who gave us an estimate on our remodeling project. We decided to make our home built in the 1960's into a new custom home inside instead of moving. We had a list of ideas from an architect friend, and Chip hit on every one of those (without seeing the list) and added more of his own. I was curious to meet Chip because some of the reviews on Angie's List weren't the most-positive.Some of those didn't actually use Chip's services, though, and after completing our remodel, we've decided some of the negatives were mostly a personality clash situation. He is opinionated (but is usually right), and we really appreciated his candid approach. Chip's superintendent (I call him "Super Dave"), did an excellent job coordinating a project of this size. Each of the groups coming through to do the work were professional and friendly and good at their trades. The job began on Sept. 10th and was completed, as promised, by mid-November; quite an accomplishment considering the scope of this project. As with any project, issues come up, but all were addressed promptly and satisfactorily. Chip stands behind his work and his words, and the skilled workmen know it. The quality of the work and results are terrific! Chip is known particularly for his cabinet work, and the study and kitchen and bath cabinets are superb. Chip sent Lou Ann to help us select all the colors, tiling, carpet, etc., and the designs we used for the kitchen and the new bathrooms are so impressive that the workers were taking pictures with their cellphones. We truly have a new house inside and are very pleased with the results. We will recommend Chip's Cabinets to friends and family with no hesitation.

Everything went smoothly. Chip projected a finish date and did his best to meet that date.
Description of Work: Chip is an artist. The cabinets that I purchased fro my daughter go beautiful with Stickley Oak furniture. He was knowledgeable and professional. He only does full cabinet replacement or new cabinets. With an gifted craftsman like Chip, I understand that. I have bought cabinets for many kitchens. He does the best work that I have ever seen. I cannot say enough about the quality and beauty of these furniture quality cabinets.

I contacted Chip and he agreed to make the doors to match the sample I took to his business. He had to purchase the trim for the doors and that company had to make the trim in maple because they didn't have it in stock. He quoted me a price of $500 for everything and since I had a difficult time finding someone willing to do the work I accepted his price. He told me that the doors would be ready in 10 days. After two weeks I emailed Chip and he told me they were waiting on the trim. After two more weeks I emailed Chip and he told me the doors were built and at the painter's to be stained. After three more weeks I received a call that the doors were ready. When I picked up the doors I noticed that the stain was not an exact match, but he told me that was due to the old doors not being as shiny. I don't really think that is the reason, but I didn't argue the point. I also asked for a discount since it took considerably longer than the original 10 day estimate, but he refused.

As other people have stated, Chip believes he knows best and what he knows is how it's going to go. My wife and I knew EXACTLY what we wanted (have done a remodel before) so all we needed Chip to do was take measurements and come up with the price. After he created our drawings, some of the things in the drawings were not what we anticipated and had him change them. After several times of him telling us that we were wrong and it shouldn't have been that way, he changed it on the computer for us and stated "wow, I guess that does look better." We continued in with rest of the design trying to change other things but it was a beat down trying to do so. We finally just stopped trying to change how our kitchen was going to look, got a quote with how "he thought it should be" and moved on to another company. Chip, if you read this, be open to the customers ideas/opinions. I know that not every customer you run across knows exactly what they want and your experience and knowledge can help them. However, if the customer doesn't like what you have presented BE OPEN TO THEIR IDEAS and don't tell them they are wrong.

The original cabinet was 12" deep, but the owner and I agreed to build the additional cabinet to 18" deep. FIrst cabinet was delivered as 12". So they had to go back and re-build the 18" one. They were fairly slow to do the job for me, especially, just to get started even on the first attempt, I think because they are so busy doing bigger jobs. So, just don't be in a hurry to get their work if your job is small. Their bid was the lowest, and the workmanship was good and exactly matched the original cabinet.

All the workers were very courteous, friendly, punctual, tidy, and did exceptionally nice work. The travertine floors and shower walls, as well as kitchen backsplashes were done beautifully. Natural color variations in tile were matched well and trim-out was neat. Chip's workers were very detail-oriented and precise in their process. It's true that Chip was a bit on the expensive side compared to some, but the final results are WELL worth the money. Never once did we feel that we had a problem or question we couldn't communicate with Chip or his foreman about. Several time we collaborated on changes and designs and Chip interfaced well with us regarding our requests. We were able to choose our own slabs of granite, choose from a large selection of tile, bathroom accessories, whirlpool tub, faucets, etc., and were extremely pleased with the way everything went together. On a personal note, Chip's individual communication style can be somewhat off-putting at first, as he tends sometimes to be short on patience and a bit grumpy on some days, but when you realize that it's just his style, he is quite good at what he does, and quite good at selecting contractors that do impeccable work. Once the actual work started, we interacted primarily through Chip's foreman (I believe his name was Wes) who was at our home continuously throughout the entire project. His foreman had a wonderfully open and communicative style, listened to our changes and requests and made sure to run things past us if he had a question. We appreciated that. Finally, I should mention that the scope of the original project when we started increased significantly as we got going, as we saw what fine work was being done and decided to add on more and more to get everything done at once. This was not Chip adding costs, but rather us deciding we wanted more things remodeled throughout the house. Had we not been pleased with Chip's company and the work they were doing, we would never have pursued the additional remodeling projects that we did. In summary, our experience was extremely good and we would highly recommend Chip's Cabinets for remodeling work.
Description of Work: Chip's Cabinets remodeled 5 bathrooms, a large kitchen, and a laundry room. Extensive tear-out and redesign in the master bathroom, including installation of a very large jacuzzi tub, tear-out, redesign and installation of a huge Roman walk-in shower with clear glass doors and half-walls, beautiful travertine tile work on floors, walls and tub-surround; and new granite countertops and window ledge. Enlarged and redesigned the adjoining his/hers master closet to double its size. Granite countertop installation and significant layout reconfiguration and redesign in a large kitchen including travertine flooring and backsplash. Counters were taken from bar-height down to counter height and large pieces of granite were cut to fit difficult angles and corners, and fit together flawlessly. Triple Waterfall edge on all granite in kitchen and master bath was cut and polished to perfection. Granite countertops, new sinks and new toilets installed in all bathrooms and powder rooms throughout house. Travertine tile shower floors & walls. Travertine tile bathroom floors. Two of the bathrooms removed bathtubs and redesigned with sleek glass-door showers and European-style walk-in showers with tiled walls and floors. New granite countertops and fixtures in laundry room. Installed lighting, fixtures, toilets, and did great plumbing and drywall work.

Fair as far as receiving a quote is concerned. If we ever need just specific cabinetry work we might consider trying him again.
Description of Work: We requested a quote for a bathroom remodel. It took a little while to get him to have time to meet with us. We aren't sure if there was a conflict his assistant was not able to tell us about that made it difficult to find a time that worked for him and us. Eventually he was able to come out, but his quote came out double our budget and we had other quotes that were in our price range.

We had some minor delays and rework along the way, but Chip always made it right. Overall, we are very satisfied with the end result (look, functionality, quality and price).
Description of Work: We had our 1929 Tudor kitchen remodeled by Chip. All cabinets, appliances, countertops, backsplash and plumbing fixtures were removed and replaced. No major structural work was done and no walls were moved, however new molding was installed and all walls/ceiling were painted. All new cabinetry was custom built and a new buffet was built/installed. Chip worked with us to design the cabinetry and the overall remodel. He is pretty opinionated and wasn't bashful about sharing his thoughts, but in the end, he would go with whatever we opted to do.

The quote was for about $55000.00. They have done our neighbor's kitchen. We knew that their quality was really really good and their speed was really really good. They were in and out very fast for her and it does look beautiful. We ended up not using them and probably wouldn't use them again in the future. They had a definite idea of how they thought things should be and it wasn't quite how we wanted it to be. They didn't seem very open to change. It was more of a personality thing. For our neighbor, what she wanted and what they wanted luckily lined up and they were happy with their kitchen. What he proposed was not how we wanted to do it. He doesn't strike me as a person that I would be able to work with and make changes and discuss things.

I spent about $25,000. It went very well. He did this job during the off season. It was extremely fast. Some people told me that they had an experience when it would take 3 months to get the kitchen done. I was expecting that. I think the job was done within 3 weeks from the time he came out and tore it down to pieces. It was really fast but it was in January when his business was really slow. They do a beautiful product. I will use this company in the future.

I called for an estimate, he responded, looked at the work to be done, made a comment, the work was small, would probably cost more for him to drive back and forth from Arlington. But he would do the work within a week. Gave an estimate of $300 to $400 for the job. We accepted, did not hear back from him for over two weeks. Called and canceled the work. Not pleased with customer care.
